Gates: No decision yet on European missile plan

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the Obama administration is still deciding what to do about a planned missile defense system in Europe.

The Bush administration plan was strongly opposed by Russia. Governments in Poland and the Czech Republic have agreed to house the missile site but are now waiting for word on whether the Obama administration wants to go ahead with it.

Gates say Wednesday that some in the administration want to see whether Russia can be brought into the program. He said that would make it more effective. He also says politics in the host countries will play a role. He noted that the Czech government that approved the plan has since fallen. The missile plan is generally unpopular there.
