DETROIT — The Detroit Media Partnership says the Detroit Free Press plans layoffs.
Rich Harshbarger, vice president of consumer marketing for the partnership, says "roughly 25" Free Press employees will lose their jobs, including an unspecified number of editorial staffers. That's about 10 percent of the newspaper's staff.
Free Press Editor and Publisher Paul Anger delivered the news during a Thursday afternoon staff meeting.
Harshbarger said a continued economic downturn and a steep decline in advertising revenue led to the decision. He said affected staffers will be notified June 22.
Harshbarger said an announcement also is expected during the next two weeks regarding layoffs at the partnership and The Detroit News.
The partnership oversees the business operations of the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News.
