D.C. invested in seeing Detroit succeed

— Ready or not, willing or not, the U.S. government is now in the automotive business.

With Monday's bankruptcy filing, General Motors is expected to emerge, in perhaps 60 to 90 days, as a new company in which taxpayers will hold a 60 percent majority stake. The White House also will control a large chunk of Chrysler stock as well, now that a federal bankruptcy judge in New York has approved the sale of the smaller automaker’s surviving assets.

While the reborn Chrysler will be run by the Italian automaker Fiat SpA, it’s a lot less certain who will manage the “newco” assuming General Motors’ assets.  Will Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner call the shots on key financial decisions? Will Energy Secretary Steven Chu banish the big Chevrolet Silverado pickup in favor of a 50 mpg minicar? Perhaps President Barack Obama himself will weigh in on the design of the next Cadillac crossover design.

Obama quickly tried to tamp down any such speculation, declaring: “What we are not doing, what I have no interest in doing, is running GM."

“GM will be run by a private board of directors with a track record in American manufacturing,” Obama said Monday. “The federal government will refrain from exercising its rights as a shareholder in all but the most fundamental corporate decisions.”

That position was generally well-received, though there are a few folks, particularly active environmentalists, who aren’t entirely pleased. There’s a generally poor track record for government intervention in the auto industry, though at times it can be critical to launch or save a nation’s car manufacturers.

Historically, there has been a vast gulf between Detroit and Washington. Starting in the 1960s, when GM controlled more than half the American market, the Justice Department’s antitrust lawyers actively tried — but failed — to split the automaker in two. And when various federal emissions, safety and mileage standards were passed, starting in the '60s, Detroit’s response could generally be described as active resistance.

So, it would seem to be a perfect time for Chu and his Cabinet colleagues to strike. Perhaps, but the 50 mile-per-gallon econoboxes debated by candidates Obama and Hillary Clinton last year, “wouldn’t sell,” insists Bob Lutz, until recently GM’s vice chairman and now a corporate consultant.

When you’ve got $50.1 billion invested in a company struggling to right itself, that’s not your focus, Lutz said. “The government would like the taxpayers’ money to come back out, and the best way to make that happen is to make us financially successful," he said. "I think the government is going to want us to build the kind of cars Americans want to buy.”

Can lawmakers really resist the impulse to meddle?  Only a couple weeks ago, Capitol Hill lawmakers, led by Texas Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, tried to force Chrysler and GM to back down on plans to eliminate nearly 2,000 car dealers. In the end, the Senate backed down, and it would be a challenge for the House and Senate to do much more, as things are now set up, then occasionally gripe and grumble.

That’s not to say a little interaction is a bad thing. Lutz praised the White House’s Automotive Task Force for “listening” to Detroit’s concerns, especially when compared to the supposedly pro-business Bush administration, which resisted calls for a meeting with Detroit Big Three CEOs until well into its second term.

It’s all a matter of degree.  Perhaps nowhere is the record on government intervention more blemished than in Britain, where activist Labor leaders took control of virtually all of the nation’s car companies in the 1960s and '70s.

The results were poor, with brands like Triumph and Sunbeam vanishing, and even survivors, such as Jaguar and Rover, being mismanaged to the point that there wasn’t much left worth saving once they were again privatized. With rare exception, those that survived were so damaged they haven’t done much better since.

At the other extreme, the Japanese government carefully and effectively nurtured its auto industry, through its Ministry of International Trade and Industry, or MITI, helping transform it into a global powerhouse. China’s government is even more active in promoting the emergence of its own auto industry, actively determining the likely winners among the hundreds of car and truck producers that dot the country.

While that level of involvement is unlikely here, Detroit makers are hoping to see the White House remain more active — and conciliatory — than in the past. A senior White House official wouldn’t commit to making the Auto Task Force permanent, but it’s clear that the Obama administration sees Detroit’s makers as critical to the economy and the nation’s future, and won’t be quick to turn a deaf ear once again.

Looks like we, the taxpayers, are the largest losers in this deal. Somehow I doubt we will ever see any of that money again. Sorry but I am never ever going to buy another car from Government Motors! Now that government owns 62% of this company...I believe I shall shop elsewhere.

GM could become a golden goose and spit out 3000% in profits and we the taxpayers will never see the money. The Government has never had instrest in paying back the taxpayers but more how to mismanage and keep more money in the longrun.

Obama should have thought it through before he continued to give the money to the "little 2" and rewrote the Bankruptcy laws all at the same time... Every thing he does isn't thought through, it all emotion and rhetoric, and ego...

The tax payer is getting porked again. There is no paying back. Obama is just taking care of the unions and his buddy's that will be running GM and GMC. Cheap loans to those that don't work or should I say, wellfare for car ownership.

GMC is a (relatively small) subsidiary of GM. Unfortuantely, people like you who obviously don't know much about the industry or business think you should have an opinion on this issue. I can only hope that the "opinions" of people who lack any understanding of the industry are ignored by those in decision-making positions.

COULD THIS BE CORRECT ???????????????????

American capitalism gone with a whimper

It must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple, excuse me dear reader, I meant people.

True, the situation has been well prepared on and off for the past century, especially the past twenty years. The initial testing grounds was conducted upon our Holy Russia and a bloody test it was. But we Russians would not just roll over and give up our freedoms and our souls, no matter how much money Wall Street poured into the fists of the Marxists.

Those lessons were taken and used to properly prepare the American populace for the surrender of their freedoms and souls, to the whims of their elites and betters.

First, the population was dumbed down through a politicized and substandard education system based on pop culture, rather then the classics. Americans know more about their favorite TV dramas then the drama in DC that directly affects their lives. They care more for their "right" to choke down a McDonalds burger or a BurgerKing burger than for their constitutional rights. Then they turn around and lecture us about our rights and about our "democracy". Pride blind the foolish.

Then their faith in God was destroyed, until their churches, all tens of thousands of different "branches and denominations" were for the most part little more then Sunday circuses and their televangelists and top protestant mega preachers were more then happy to sell out their souls and flocks to be on the "winning" side of one pseudo Marxist politician or another. Their flocks may complain, but when explained that they would be on the "winning" side, their flocks were ever so quick to reject Christ in hopes for earthly power. Even our Holy Orthodox churches are scandalously liberalized in America.

The final collapse has come with the election of Barack Obama. His speed in the past three months has been truly impressive. His spending and money printing has been a record setting, not just in America's short history but in the world. If this keeps up for more then another year, and there is no sign that it will not, America at best will resemble the Wiemar Republic and at worst Zimbabwe.

These past two weeks have been the most breath taking of all. First came the announcement of a planned redesign of the American Byzantine tax system, by the very thieves who used it to bankroll their thefts, loses and swindles of hundreds of billions of dollars. These make our Russian oligarchs look little more then ordinary street thugs, in comparison. Yes, the Americans have beat our own thieves in the shear volumes. Should we congratulate them?

These men, of course, are not an elected panel but made up of appointees picked from the very financial oligarchs and their henchmen who are now gorging themselves on trillions of American dollars, in one bailout after another. They are also usurping the rights, duties and powers of the American congress (parliament). Again, congress has put up little more then a whimper to their masters.

Then came Barack Obama's command that GM's (General Motor) president step down from leadership of his company. That is correct, dear reader, in the land of "pure" free markets, the American president now has the power, the self given power, to fire CEOs and we can assume other employees of private companies, at will. Come hither, go dither, the centurion commands his minions.

So it should be no surprise, that the American president has followed this up with a "bold" move of declaring that he and another group of unelected, chosen stooges will now redesign the entire automotive industry and will even be the guarantee of automobile policies. I am sure that if given the chance, they would happily try and redesign it for the whole of the world, too. Prime Minister Putin, less then two months ago, warned Obama and UK's Blair, not to follow the path to Marxism, it only leads to disaster. Apparently, even though we suffered 70 years of this Western sponsored horror show, we know nothing, as foolish, drunken Russians, so let our "wise" Anglo-Saxon fools find out the folly of their own pride.

Again, the American public has taken this with barely a whimper...but a "freeman" whimper.

So, should it be any surprise to discover that the Democratically controlled Congress of America is working on passing a new regulation that would give the American Treasury department the power to set "fair" maximum salaries, evaluate performance and control how private companies give out pay raises and bonuses? Senator Barney Franks, a social pervert basking in his homosexuality (of course, amongst the modern, enlightened American societal norm, as well as that of the general West, homosexuality is not only not a looked down upon life choice, but is often praised as a virtue) and his Marxist enlightenment, has led this effort. He stresses that this only affects companies that receive government monies, but it is retroactive and taken to a logical extreme, this would include any company or industry that has ever received a tax break or incentive.

The Russian owners of American companies and industries should look thoughtfully at this and the option of closing their facilities down and fleeing the land of the Red as fast as possible. In other words, divest while there is still value left.

The proud American will go down into his slavery with out a fight, beating his chest and proclaiming to the world, how free he really is. The world will only snicker.

The only people who don't want capitalisum are people who think they have some god given right to not work and reap the benefits of people who do work? I am sorry I just somehow do not get the thinking of anti capitalists. Perhaps you think the world owes you a living? You are not creative or have the guts to make your own path. People from all over the world have traditionally wanted to come to the USA for the privilege to become capitalists. What is so horrifyingly bad about being your own boss or working your way up in life?

I feel this administration will go down in history as the worst this country has ever seen and for the sake of this country I hope it will be over soon although judging by the horrifying debt they have ratcheted this country into it can never be soon enough.

I have heard this from several people "for the first time in my life I am afraid of my country" I agree.

Not since Lincoln has a president so abused the Constitution. The present generation is witnessing the demise of the Democratic Republic. If asked, those younger members of society actually believe that government control is a good thing without even realizing what the are saying. In 25 years (thankfully after I'm gone) America will be a footnote, right there next to ancient Greece. The Pravda article above pretty much says it all.

DC invested in success of Detroit??? Another bad joke. Another gov solution with the only possible outcome being failure. Another opportunity for the leftists to say this is proof that free enterprise doesnt work and that we need socialism. The gov keeps telling us that the recession is nearly over and yet jobs and future jobs are being killed on a weekly basis. This should be a worldwide example of what governments should not do to their economies. Media?? They should go back to reporting on Madonna.

We'll see how much these politicians truly care about our industry and workers.

Truth be told, government bailouts in capitalist countries of auto manufacturers has been done before and has been done successfully by the South Korean governmnet in regards to Hyundai and Kia.

Instead of playing politics, and appealing to ignorant bottom feeders like this "Bama" fellow here, they actually did what was best for the industry, took a hands-off approach themselves and installed people in sensitive positions who knew the industry, knew what they were doing, had a focus on saving their industry, and DID NOT use their auto industry as a political football. If our politicians do the same, rather than trying to score points with ignorants, idiots and bottom-feeders, this can be successful. But if politicians try to exploit this to gain the votes of clowns like "Bama" here, our auto industry will fail only because it's a reflection of the policies that the average American supports.

In that case, we can't blame the automakers, we can look in the mirror and blame ourselves for putting our own hubris and ignorant politics before what is good for the nation. We'll see if patriotism is anything more than worthless lip service in this country.

Are the South Koreans smarter and better at business than we are, or are we smart enough to borrow and emulate their best practices that have made their autos competitive on a worldwide scale? The moment of truth is here.

He might get away, with driving 3 % to 5% of our small business to failure and he might get away with driving another 3 or 4% offshore, I don't think, he can survive that 25% to 30% increase in electricty.

The past is the operative term here. With bankruptcy and everything else, the government should I say, THIS government feels they know better than the business people about what to do. They should have never given GM the money. This could have happened six months ago without the billions spent.

Jim, you seem to have a very split personality. You are right about the S. Koreans. It is not all on the backs of average Americans though. Our auto companies have enjoyed very high sales as we and others continued to buy. The problems are many and they affect foreign mfgs also, but how many of their governments are trying to get rid of their own auto companies?? This recession has brought a loss of close to 50% of the gross income of domestic auto companies and that was not their fault. Another fact is that the way the gov is setting up GM, there will be no alternative other than slow, painful death. Our auto companies are at fault for not seeing that profits were made in good times. If you cant make a profit in good times, you automatically lose money in bad times. The employee and union costs were the real killer though and a proper gov assisted bankruptcy would have cured that problem by making the rules the same as the foreign mfgrs. That would have been a better solution than just killing the domestic manufacturing.

The real problem, that, Mr. Obama faces, is that he thinks that all of this, is an original idea.

He seems to feel, that he can continue to tax business, require expensive items from them and they will continue to say okay chief, thanks, can I have some more.

He feels that he can continue to raise taxes, on the "rich" and they will continue to smile and ask for more.

I presume he is able, in the field of law, evidently history is not, one of his favorites.

England did this in 1970, taxes rates of up to 95% were established. Universal health care was established, many other quasi socicalist programs.

In 1978, some one in government noticed that ther wer short on doctors aengineers and any other group, with dspecial skills and abilities.

Horrors, it seem that they went, where they could keep more of their money.

But then, of course, they didn't have Mr. Obama's rhetoric, no doubt he envisoins persuading them to stay here and keep doing it.

WRONG TITLE! Washington is not invested in seeing "Detroit" succeed. Because presumably "Detroit" also includes Ford. Washington is invested in seeing GM and Chrysler succeed. Ford is run by evil capitalists who wouldn't drink the poison. They wouldn't make the blood oath. They wouldn't take the easy money along with the government rules and ownership. They are contrary to the spirit of "CHANGE" and must be destroyed.

So, if you want to flip Washington the middle finger, buy a Ford.

I'm from detroit have you seen the dump, if they were in the slightest bit interested they'd have to start by tearing down all the empty ancient buildings that are falling on there own, and the rusted out complexes were there used to be business's that have been left empty and unattended for twenty plus years, they still have'nt even tore the old buildings they filmed robocop in down they were junk then(rusted out walls and roofs with gaping holes all visible from any road around them), its been about 20 years and nothing just letting them all rot. not to mention all the crack shacks, its a sh!thole, always has been always will be and it gets worse and worse every day. they talk of michigan being a glove but yet all I ever saw was a finger. and for those still in michigan who dis-agree with me, pick one your rich and live in the spoiled hoods, your broke and just plain out stuck, or your used to living around garbage and don't care to have better. the only good thing left in detroit--go wings--

That may be true however it is the democratic policies that have destroyed Ohio coal mines. Add to that the democratic fanny mae freddie mac effect and you have pinpointed the real issue for Ohio. As a matter of fact our whole country is suffering from the democratic housing F*CK up.

Just how is it that the taxpayers are gonna get paid back? what does the taxpayer have to do with anything connected to GM except paying there bills. that money was pissed out the window as fast as it went through it, how is it they got billions and still they are filing bankrupt, when they gonna show where the billions went-probably never cause they don't know where it went but obama's got a pair of endorsements for the next election I'm sure.

Seems there's a couple of bumps in the road of imagination, so it may take obama a day or two full of uhhh's and ummm's to think of what to do next. or should we just start calling him "brain" and hope pinky shows up so he can continue his plot to take over the world.

Corpocracy over the people. We exist to pay billionaires bills. What became of this country, its political system and capitalism is beyond pathetic.

Wrong again. DC wants the unions to succeed. Without total union support there is no democratric party to speak of. Union workers of all types number 10 million + family and spouses = 15 million out of 55 million democratic votes (25%!!!!) more or less.

When Obamarama motors tanks, watch the PREMIUM the UAW gets for their 17% stake, at TAXPAYER expense.

If the GM WORK FORCE WAS NONUNION AND ANTIABORTIONISTS WE WOULDNT BE GOING THROUGH THIS MESS. Its so plainly obvious.

Wake up from your Obama coma and stop this administration from working only for its largely decrepit votering base (unions, hordes upon hordes of social vampires, leftist nutcases, abortionmists, queers etc, etc) at the terrible expense of every one else.

Your kid's and grand kid's future is screwed...its now just a matter of how much.

I fear it will reach even further down that chain into the future. With the expediancy this administration can spend money and destroy tax paying jobs. We will soon see what a thrid world is like here in the USA with this horrifying mess in office.

so isn't it in the best intrest for american's to start buying GM cars? If we all start doing that, the government would be making our money back and more since the stock would go up. Then, we start funding more education and so on. Right?

Ah no why would I make a 4 to 5 year commitment with GM that just bugger the tax payer out of Billion.

The hole point in them getting the money was to keep the worker working and to rearrange it self to get throw this.

Chapter 11 was not in the cards and was why we gave them the money.

As fare as I see it I hop thy flop and Ford picks up the slake and make a killing.

The headline should not be "D.C. invested in seeing Detroit succeed", but rather "D.C. spending billions to keep failing company afloat".  GM will fail.  It is just going to be a long, drawn out process.  Government's job is not to be in business, and every time they have tried, they have been a failure.  Look at the Post Office, and Social Security, and the list goes on and is getting longer with the Obaminator at the helm.

No, it is not in the best interest of people to buy GM products. Let the company fail, get rid of the root causes of the failure, and new companies will spring up. The American people are smarter than to fall for that ploy. Why buy a car from a failing company. Why allow the government to dictate what the vehicles being produced should be??? GM is going down big time, and it will come to light only after billions more are thrown their way and vehicles are still not purchased.

Buying GM cars will give more money back to the government??? Where is the logic in that? They already have our money, and are giving it to GM, and with plans to give them more---somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 billion. Maybe that is what they should invest on education instead of an auto manufacturer.

I think this is a good start. But we needed to do more and prepare a good plan to bolster our market on domestic and abroad. Also since the recession is world wide we needed to help also the world economy by lending them funds, services and products that are reasonable and competitive. In this way we will also bolster the manufacturing industry and thereby straightening our economy.

Open your eyes people!! the Federal Government bails out the financial institutions (they now own a large share of them), then Obama takes OUR tax $ to Mexico City for pro abortion stuff, now the government owns over 60% of GM. Obama has "urged " homeowners to refianance their homes. Of course to build HIS financial institutions back up. How is he going to check up on them? drive one of HIS cars.

Now he is on his way back to the middle east again, after spending thousands of OUR tax dollars to take his wife out to dinner. Of course he has done more than any president since Roosevelt, but he has tripled our national debt (or more) in doing so. cutting $ to the different states, yet he keeps spending and spending and spending. to what foregin country are more of our tax dollars going to next?? What king is he going to bow to now?

All together, our government had the Federal Reserve print 50,000,000,000 dollars to restore GM and then have them go bankrupt! We told them to can it, now they are telling us we own sixty percent while the government owns the preferred stock. Who would want to trade? Who would want to support it? This is the most ridiculous INFLATIONARY move I think I have ever openly seen. Why, GM should have gone down to begin with, they blew chucks!

Another company could have risen from the ashes but NO, our government wouldn't allow that to happen. Hummmm... what is wrong with this picture?
