NEW YORK — James Gandolfini, Marcia Gay Harden, Jeff Daniels and Hope Davis are having such a good time on Broadway that they've extended their stay.
The actors will remain with "God of Carnage" through Nov. 15 after taking a six-week summer hiatus beginning July 27. Performances will resume Sept. 8 of the hit comedy by Yasmina Reza.
"They (the cast) love doing the play, and they love working together," producer Stuart Thompson said Tuesday. "Although they all had some summer plans, they all wanted to go on. So we said, 'Let's do it.'"
Daniels concurred.
"Can't get enough 'Carnage,'" the actor joked. "It's a unique experience. And we're all old enough to know that when you find yourself in a wonderful creative experience like this has been, and that they (the producers) offered to bring it back, you don't run away from it."
All four performers as well as director Matthew Warchus and the play have been nominated for 2009 Tony Awards. "God of Carnage" concerns the clash between two liberal, middle-class couples whose children get into a fight.
During the summer break, Daniels plans to return to Chelsea, Mich., where he is the executive director of the Purple Rose Theatre Company.
"I just turned in a play, so we will be working on the script in August," the actor said. "Plus, I'm going to do some gigs — I go out with a guitar. I enjoy that. But I will enjoy coming back here. There is just nothing better than being in a hit Broadway comedy."
"God of Carnage" opened last March at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. It has been one of the big successes of the recently concluded Broadway season, getting rave reviews and doing boffo, sellout business. Last week, for example, the show grossed over $900,000, more than many musicals. The play recouped its more than $2 million in production costs in less than three months.
Tickets for the resumption of the run in September go on sale Wednesday, Thompson said.
