Gun-loving pastor to his flock: Piece be with you

advertisement

LOUISVILLE — A Kentucky pastor is inviting his flock to bring guns to church to celebrate the Fourth of July and the Second Amendment.

New Bethel Church is welcoming "responsible handgun owners" to wear their firearms inside the church June 27, a Saturday. An ad says there will be a handgun raffle, patriotic music and information on gun safety.

"We're just going to celebrate the upcoming theme of the birth of our nation," said pastor Ken Pagano. "And we're not ashamed to say that there was a strong belief in God and firearms — without that this country wouldn't be here."

The guns must be unloaded and private security will check visitors at the door, Pagano said.

He said recent church shootings, including the killing Sunday of a late-term abortion provider in Kansas, which he condemned, highlight the need to promote safe gun ownership. The New Bethel Church event was planned months before Dr. George Tiller was shot to death in a Wichita church.

Kentucky allows residents to openly carry guns in public with some restrictions. Gun owners carrying concealed weapons must have state-issued permits and can't take them to schools, jails or bars, among other exceptions.

Pagano's Protestant church, which attracts up to 150 people to Sunday services, is a member of the Assemblies of God. The former Marine and handgun instructor said he expected some backlash, but has heard only a "little bit" of criticism of the gun event.

John Phillips, an Arkansas pastor who was shot twice while leading a service at his former church in 1986, said a house of worship is no place for firearms.

"A church is designated as a safe haven, it's a place of worship," said Phillips, who was shot by a church member's relative for an unknown reason and still has a bullet lodged in his spine. "It is unconscionable to me to think that a church would be a place that you would even want to bring a weapon."

Phillips spoke out against a bill before the Arkansas General Assembly that would have permitted the carrying of guns in that state's churches. The bill failed in February.

Pagano, 50, said some members of his church were concerned that President Obama's administration could restrict gun ownership, and they supported the plan for the event when Pagano asked their opinion.

Marian McClure Taylor, executive director of the Kentucky Council of Churches, an umbrella organization for 11 Christian denominations in Kentucky, said Christian churches are promoters of peace, but "most allow for arms to be taken up under certain conditions."

Taylor said Pagano assured her the event would focus on promoting responsible gun ownership and any proceeds would go to charity.

"Those two commitments are consistent with the high value the Assemblies of God churches place on human life," she said in an e-mail message.

Pagano is encouraging church members to bring a canned good and a friend to the event. He said guns must be unloaded for insurance purposes and safety reasons.

He said the point was not to mix worship with guns, though he may reference some passages from the Bible.

"Firearms can be evil and they can be useful," he said. "We're just trying to promote responsible gun ownership and gun safety."

A good way to show patriotism. As long those bringing their guns are citizens, with the Constitutional immunity to own and bear them.

Appropriate during the week in the fellowship hall I suppose, but, in my opinion, totally inappropriate during the worship service in the sanctuary. I find this very, very disrespectful of the sacrifice Jesus made with his life.

Nope, they'll only shoot those members of The Democratic Party, who's members ironically, are statistically more apt to commit gun violence than Republicans. It's a strange world and not everything is as MSNBC would have us believe. There are forces within this world working to maintain the financial and political control their families have held for hundreds of years.

Does anyone actually believe the thousands of family members of the old very wealthy Royalty all just gave up their tons of gold, silver, riches, cash and went away acouple of hundred of years ago.

Nope, they're still as powerful as ever, doing business, and pulling strings here and around the world. These people have been connected to each other for centuries and Americans are really ignorant about the amount of control they really exert around the world, in all governments, including here.

The TARP Bailout paid how many billions to these family owned foriegn banks? To the point, if the Western World was to contemplate finally falling under the control of one governement entity, as the EU is now in Europe, the existing governments would have to "Match Up" Rights and liberties of the affected Nations before it could take place. If they didn't make all citizens equal, some citizens would believe they had rights that others didn't. This would lead to chaos at a minimum.

Now to be realistic, Eastern European Nations are not going to grant "Free Speech" to their citizens just because America has The First Amendment, so we'll have to lose the First Amendment before we can "merge" as a society without Borders.

This is exactly what is occurring in Europe and the UK as we speak. Hence, many Americans are resisting any attempt by anyone to infringe on ANY Constitutional Right and some States are now passing Laws and resolutions firmly recommiting to the 9th and 10th Amendment, which keeps the FEDS from granting itself any Powers not Specifically Granted to them by The States. Those of us who don't trust Politicians anywhere, anytime, ask our Fredom Loving Countrymen to do protect the Constitution at all costs, regardless of the specific section and regardless of their Politics.

We broke away from Europe for the same reasons that still exist today. The families there still want to maintain too much control over the Labor Force which translates to almost everyone because that guarantees their future profits for another 200 years.

Large Corporations can't make billions for themselves if they pay their employees close to 6 figures per family like we do to here in the States. Most new EU workers in their 30's amke 750 Euro's per month, and it's an EU wide pay scale. Oooh La La!

Working couples here make much more than Europeans in the same job, and even own Homes, Cars and Boats. This just isn't as true there in "The Old Country". Most Blue Collar Type Europeans rent (at a discount) because home ownership is very expensive and almost counter culture, unless of course, it's family home. Cars are less needed as gas is $9 / Gal. It's not America and it's not all it's cracked up to be.

I'm ashamed to admit that I like money more than Culture. I want to make my own decisions and don't want to live in a society where there is no Middle Class. I like middle class homes, Cars, boats, and vacations.

Different era, then people were familiar with the tool.

AND the people had not adapted the tools and philosophy of "spray and pray"....

The main reason for gun ownership now is that "law enforcement" are so busy in their "wars" that the citizen is not protected. "Law enforcement" itself is a threat because they have no oversight, when abuse occurs the leaders look the other way as acceptable collateral damage.

My! Was Grandma Earp proud! But what got me was that Deacon Wyatt strutted up and down the aisle wearin' his gun on the outside ...

      Page 44
Even stranger is the fact that concurrently Deacon Wyatt Earp was also secretly living with a second wife, whom he always kept obdurately hidden from public ...
This is from Frank Waters' book the Earp Brothers of Tombstone. It was from an interview with Allie Earp, Virgil Earp's wife. Virgil was Wyatt's brother. She said Wyatt was the only Deacon that wore his guns on the outside of his jacket during church services. Her comment... Wyatt was just a Show-Off. Looks like Wyatt Earp would fit right in with this Kentucky church.

I've got nothing against church folk. Well, excepting the Fundamentalist Right Wing NeoCon Old Testament gaggle. Heck, I just gave my little brother, who is a preacher, my old Colt Trooper and custom rig fer it. I don't think Christianity negates the need to hunt or to defend hearth and home. "He said recent church shootings, including the killing Sunday of a late-term abortion provider in Kansas, which he condemned, highlight the need to promote safe gun ownership."

I consider myself a "common-sense" type person and can understand your criticism, but I ask you: when you really think about it, is the idea really so bad? I think we can all agree that proming safe gun owernship is vital.

I would make the further assertion that gun ownership is a simple necessity for the innocent to protect themselves from criminals. There is a well documented correlation between an decrease in gun ownership rights and a spike in violent crime -- see Brazil and the U.K. for modern examples. The ultimate fallacy of gun control laws is that all they accomplish is to keep them out of the hands of the innocent while failing miserably to keep them away from the criminals who have a variety of connections and back-channels to purchase illegal weapons.

If this pastor wants to encourage a "bring-your-gun-to-church-day" to promote a responsible, level headed application of this principal, more power to him.

Gotta say, I am agreement with your assertions. And I am a socially liberal leftneck.

One of the problems in my humble opinion is that parents have lost the ability to teach their children about firearms and firearm safety. Many live in a world far removed from the food chain or live under the illusion that the government or LEO will always keep them safe from predatory behavior.

One of the first runs I made with Search and Rescue was for a kid that decided to take up hunting. No one ever gave him even a minuscule bit of advice or lesson in safety. Sadly no one ever told him that crossing a fence line with rifle in hand might not be such a good idea. Sure enough he put an aught six round through his ankle and ended up losing his leg from the knee down. Sad.

Anyhow, I'm not losing any sleep over the bring yer piece to church day. Heck, I'd kinda like to be there to see what range of weaponry is worn. Probably a good thing it is too far for me to witness. I just might git smoted by a bolt of lightening were I too make an appearance in a church......

No one wants to take away your gun. By the way, I like how gun owners always throw in that "law abiding" stuff...as if they say it enough times, everyone will believe it. There are plenty of gun owners that are not law abiding, and that includes the guns that are legally owned! Want an example? I've got a good one for you.

Don't be fooled Jeanne, like all governments, there are plenty in Washington who want to take the firearms of Americans away, and they've made it quite clear. They usually use "High Rates of Violent Crime" as the rally point, but have lately tried The Mexican Drug Angle, which was disputed by The Border Patrol and ICE in Congressional Hearings. They testified that because real Assault weapons used by the Cartels can't be purchased in The US, these weapons are brought from both China and Israel.

The Second Amendment exist to keep people within our government from getting over zealous about their appointed role and powers granted by The People. President Obama is one reason guns are Illegal in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. he used to be our Illinois State Senator before he was elected as our United States Senator and went to Washington.

Eric Holder, Obama's Head of Justice has also made his feelings clear about ownership of firearms by individuals and he is responsible for protecting the Rights guaranteed by the Constitution. That must be difficult to achieve if you don't believe in the Rights themselves. Kind of like having a Pastor that doesn't believe in The Bible.

Obviously crime in Chicago has increased since then, as 36 school age children have been shot and killed this year, a 50% increase from last year already. The crack gangs didn't get the memo, just like the Washington DC gangs.

Even Eric Holder's Justice Department recently released a report citing that Mexican Gangs are the number One reason for the horrific increase in the level of Violent Crime in 235 American Cities.

....and as they frisk me at the door of the local "pack and pray" I am reminded of my younger years as a rather, shall we say "enterprising person of interest" on the streets of Brooklyn... Almost brings a nostalgic tear to my eye...

Uncle Vito would be proud to see how much our families have learned about how to get along in church.

...or can my Father in law bring his double barrel 12 gauge?

He had it at the wedding you know, it's a little fuzzy after all the moonshine and all, but I think there was even a Preacher feller there too as I recall.

But why the need to celebrate just the 2nd amendment? What correlation does firearms have specifically with the 4th of July? Sure, we used guns to fend off the British to win our independence -- but a church? You'd think that churches that circle jerk themselves over nationalistic pride would celebrate ALL amendments - but I guess some pastors have some deep down sub-conscious to reinforce the sad stereotype of Bible belt southerners.

If this pastor wants to show patriotism, wouldn't it be more appropriate to ask his congregation to bring an American flag? (I have a sneaky suspicion that, at this church, some would show up with Confederate flags).

Nicely put, but I think it's probably a decision the pastor made while fully awake and aware of the publicity his action would evoke.

So I guess my "Real" question would be.... Does he still get a tax exempt status for "reminding" us of our rights?..... and how far will that free ride get him?

Does he have any divine ideas about who should be elected to public office too?

We actually defeated Cornwallis by barricade and surrender, not weapons. The french cut off his escape by sea, and the Continental Army barricaded him from advancing further north, forcing him to surrender.

The ONLY instrument that has ever ended a war was the pen.
