PORTLAND — Washington County's "Bunny Lady" is back in the hutch after violating a court order banning her from owning animals for five years.
Miriam Sakewitz, 47, was arrested Tuesday at a hotel in the Portland suburb of Tigard after an employee reported finding rabbits hopping around in her room.
Problems for Sakewitz started in October 2006 when police in Hillsboro, about 15 miles west of Portland, found and confiscated nearly 250 rabbits in her home, including about 100 dead ones in freezers and refrigerators.
Police said she broke into the facility where the survivors were being cared for in January 2007 and stole most of them back. Authorities found her a few days later in Chehalis, Wash., with eight live rabbits and two dead ones in her car. Another 130 rabbits were recovered at a nearby horse farm.
Sakewitz was sentenced in April 2007 to five years probation and was banned from owning or controlling animals. She also was told not to go within 100 yards of a rabbit.
That summer, Sakewitz was ordered to spend three days in jail for violating her probation by keeping a rabbit in her house. County probation officer Susan Ranger also said Sakewitz had canceled counseling sessions and refused to open the door for unannounced visits. Ranger said she found no rabbits when she finally got inside but did find a half-empty 10-pound bag of carrots.
Since then, Sakewitz has remained "pretty quiet" — until this week, said Washington County probation officer Bob Severe. "We hadn't heard much further from her," he said, adding she was thought to be living in Clackamas County.
On Tuesday, Washington County animal control officers removed eight adult rabbits, five young ones and a dead one from Sakewitz's hotel room, Tigard police spokesman Jim Wolf said.
Sakewitz was in custody Wednesday, and Wolf said he did not know if she had an attorney. She was to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon on animal neglect charges.
Well, I would like this woman to come to where I live. The rabbits are all over the place and they destroy the plants, eat the flowers. She could have a high ol' time here.
Dang. Glad I'm not obsessed with rabbits. Bet her place was aromatic.
She's lucky PDX SWAT didn't no knock her, shoot all her bunnies and flash bang her arse. On the other hand I reckon I'm obsessed with my Dawg Pal. Enough so's that if the state stole him I'd git all ninja like and stole him back. Put him on the Underground Canine Railway too.
Rabbits and humans share one common hobby, we have to reproduce all the time.
thas what i was saying...first comment...maybe she is obssessed with the rabbits sexual behavior....she doesnt look like she might get much lol..idk...but think about...rabbits produce alot..so they ya know.....hump alot...lol what else could it be?? lol
I hope she never tried oral sex.
Oops, bunnies are just so dang cute. But no more bunnies for YOU!
She looks kind of like a rabbit.
Yes, she looks like a rabbit. Especially in the area above the lips, the slightly puffed area under the nose. And those big round cheeks.
I took a second look. She does look like a rabbit.
That comment sounds just a bit like elementary school to me. Don't get personal. I suppose it is okay to say, but only if you are a kid. We all go through that finger-pointing & laughing age. Sorry to admit now that I was guilty of the same.
'Bunny Lady' is probably not mentally right, so take it easy on her 'til she can get some badly needed psychiatric care.
Silly rabbit... Trix are for kids!
i thought rabbits were cute?? she doesnt look like a rabbit to me...but she does look like she has mental health issues going on....why would she put dead rabbits in the freezer or fridge? sounds like a jeffery dahmer story..but bunny style..lol..eww
Hello
The fear of rabbits is leporiphobia, which means the love of rabbits is leporaphilia.
I guess she'd have leporimania...'cuz she's cuckoo for bunnies. It's actually kinda sad. She really needs to be institutionalized.
I have been in the "Rabbit World" for about 6 years now. I have had close to 400 at one time. I show and breed. The ones I breed are too small for food, but I have kept stillborn babies in my freezer so a friend of mine could feed them to her snake and I know alot of breeders who do that as well and if you are using rabbits for human consumption you have to kill them by hand you can't euthenize them cause people would die from the poison. Rabbits can also be litter trained. I don't know all the facts to the case or condition of the rabbits, but if it was cruelty then she should never be aloud to own any animal. But if it was her township and/or neighbors being asses then they need to leave her alone. I moved out of a township who told me 4 years ago I could have my rabbits then recently told me I could only have 3 per acre and that I would face fines up to $1,000 per day if I didn't get rid of them. I'm looking in to sueing the township since I had to spend so much to move and I only moved to that township because the said it was ok in the first place. I never would have moved had they said I was only aloud 3, cause the county and township I was living in was zoned agriculture, the other was zone agriculture/residental. The township I live in now was more than happy to put it in writing that my bunnies are ok to be there. Plus my surrounding neighbors have cows, goats, and chickens. I'm much happier now! :) I did downsize my herd, but I still have about 200 :) (14 of them are Registered Grand Champions)
This is in comment to Dawn 345105. I don't know if this lady is secretly obsessed with sex, but I highly doubt the rabbits are fullfilling that desire for her. I have bred rabbits for 6 years and its actually very frustrating. Rabbits refuse to breed in cold temperatures, some times the does (females) don't want to raise their asses for the bucks (males) or sometimes the buck just isn't interested in the doe all together. If you have a young or timid buck they hide in the corner if the doe is agressive and tries humping them. If the climate is too hot they won't breed either and 3 consecutive days of 80+ and the buck goes sterile for a few days. And if you don't keep the doe producing and let her rest for a month between litters it takes a half a year to get her producing again. I hate over working my does like that, but you have too or now babies for the show tables. I don't know who ever coined that faze "breeding like rabbits." but apparently they never actually owned any or tried breeding them themselves! lol
ok true that...i just dont any other explaination lol...of why she would have such a rabbitt issue... i mean she even keeps the dead ones...weird
I probaly was taking the...." F----ing like rabbits"... too far...lol my apoligies :)
Its cool. I admit it's quite funny watching them mate. The male lets out a loud squeek and his legs fly out from under him and he lays on the wire for a few minutes like he's paralized while the doe just sits there. The do breed about 8-10 times in an hour! Maybe thats what the fraze means. lol
'Ranger said she found no rabbits when she finally got inside but did find a half-empty 10-pound bag of carrots.'
That was funny!
I keep getting a queasy feeling in my stomach when I 'visualize' this scene of dead rabbits. I grew up in the country and my grandfather had rabbit boxes. I still remember the butchering and the odor. Gross!
You should know, your only getting half the story. The other half, comes from her reasoning, her situation and her perspective.
Of course, she appears radical by the limited perspective presented to us; however, I've seen more serious behavioral abnormalities demonstrated by many accepted as norm, within this society, with NO judicial meddling.
Jeffrey Merrill. Thank you. Yes, I suppose there are other situations that exist within this society that far surpass this situation as 'bizarre' or more serious. What amazes me is there is no intervention from anyone or any agency. There are plenty of people in need of help that somehow fall through loopholes.
Do you feel the court should have intervened?
Do you feel the court should have intervened?
I really don't have enough information to make that call. This news story appears to have been written....specifically to shock: however, I do see a national trend, where the local governments are increasingly sticking their nose into private and personal affairs. And have personally seen stories written which made honest good people out to be fanatical lunatics, these being good honest people caught in a legal loophole of the law.
This use to be called yellow journalism; because, it doesn't cover the whole story in an objective manner. It merely presents one side of the story, with an implied subjective slant.
The really sad part, is that most Americans have come to accept this. Just as we accept that all politicians lie. We under-mine our best interest by blindly accepting these things with an apathetic ideology that there is nothing we can do about them. Or we fail to recognize the slanted implications...falling for the curve thrown at us, by blindly accepting the perspective given us.
