LOS ANGELES — A judge has denied bail for a former Los Angeles gang member turned anti-gang activist who is accused of still participating in a notorious prison gang.
A federal magistrate judge said Tuesday that 37-year-old Alex Sanchez has a criminal history and could seek revenge.
Sanchez, the founder of the anti-gang organization Homies Unidos, faces a federal racketeering charge and is accused of conspiring to eliminate a rival who was subsequently shot to death in an El Salvadoran town three years ago.
Former state Sen. Tom Hayden offered to put up his home as bond for Alex Sanchez but the judge turned him down.
Hayden and about 40 others turned up in the downtown courtroom to show support for Sanchez and rallied in a nearby park after the hearing.
