TAMPA — Billy Mays, the burly, bearded television pitchman whose boisterous hawking of products such as Orange Glo and OxiClean made him a pop-culture icon, has died. He was 50.

Tampa police said Mays' wife found him unresponsive Sunday morning. A fire rescue crew pronounced him dead at 7:45 a.m. It was not immediately clear how he died. He said he was hit on the head when an airplane he was on made a rough landing Saturday, and his wife, Deborah Mays, told investigators he didn't feel well before he went to bed about 10 p.m. that night.

There were no signs of a break-in at the home, and investigators do not suspect foul play, said Lt. Brian Dugan of the Tampa Police Department, who wouldn't answer questions about how Mays' body was found because of the ongoing investigation. The coroner's office expects to have an autopsy done by Monday afternoon.

"Although Billy lived a public life, we don't anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days," Deborah Mays said in a statement Sunday. "Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times."

U.S. Airways confirmed that Mays was among the passengers on a flight that made a rough landing on Saturday afternoon at Tampa International Airport, leaving debris on the runway after apparently blowing its front tires.

Tampa Bay's Fox television affiliate interviewed Mays afterward.

"All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping," MyFox Tampa Bay quoted him as saying. "It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."

Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said linking Mays' death to the landing would "purely be speculation." She said Mays' family members didn't report any health issues with the pitchman, but said he was due to have hip replacement surgery in the coming weeks.

Laura Brown, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said she did not know if Mays was wearing his seat belt on the flight because the FAA is not investigating his death.

U.S. Airways spokesman Jim Olson said there were no reports of serious injury due to the landing.

"If local authorities have any questions for us about yesterday's flight, we'll cooperate fully with them," he said.

Born William Mays in McKees Rocks, Pa., on July 20, 1958, Mays developed his style demonstrating knives, mops and other "As Seen on TV" gadgets on Atlantic City's boardwalk. For years he worked as a hired gun on the state fair and home show circuits, attracting crowds with his booming voice and genial manner.

AJ Khubani, founder and CEO of "As Seen on TV," said he first met Mays in the early 1990s when Mays was still pitching one of his early products, the Shammy absorbent cloth, at a trade fair. He said he most recently worked with Mays on the reality TV show "Pitchmen" on the Discovery Channel, which follows Mays and Anthony Sullivan in their marketing jobs.

"His innovative role and impact on the growth and wide acceptance of direct response television cannot be overestimated or easily replaced; he was truly one of a kind," Khubani said of Mays in a statement.

After meeting Orange Glo International founder Max Appel at a home show in Pittsburgh in the mid-1990s, Mays was recruited to demonstrate the environmentally friendly line of cleaning products on the St. Petersburg-based Home Shopping Network.

Commercials and informercials followed, anchored by the high-energy Mays showing how it's done while tossing out kitschy phrases like, "Long live your laundry!"

Sarah Ellerstein worked closely with Mays when she was a buyer for the Home Shopping Network in the 1990s and he was pitching Orange Glo products.

"Billy was such a sweet guy, very lovable, very nice, always smiling, just a great, great guy," she said, adding that Mays met his future wife at the network. "Everybody thinks because he's loud and boisterous on the air that that's the way he is, but I always found him to be a quiet, down-to-earth person."

His ubiquitousness and thumbs-up, in-your-face pitches won Mays plenty of fans for his commercials on a wide variety of products. People lined up at his personal appearances for autographed color glossies, and strangers stopped him in airports to chat about the products.

"I enjoy what I do," Mays told The Associated Press in a 2002 interview. "I think it shows."

Mays liked to tell the story of giving bottles of OxiClean to the 300 guests at his wedding, and doing his ad spiel ("powered by the air we breathe!") on the dance floor at the reception. Visitors to his house typically got bottles of cleaner and housekeeping tips.

As part of "Pitchmen," Mays and Sullivan showed viewers new gadgets such as the Impact Gel shoe insert; the Tool Band-it, a magnetized armband that holds tools; and the Soft Buns portable seat cushion.

"One of the things that we hope to do with 'Pitchmen' is to give people an appreciation of what we do," Mays told The Tampa Tribune in an April interview. "I don't take on a product unless I believe in it. I use everything that I sell."

His former wife, Dolores "Dee Dee" Mays, of McKees Rocks, Pa., recalled that the first product he sold was the Wash-matik, a device for pumping water from a bucket to wash cars.

"I knew him since he was 15, and I always knew he had it in him," she said of Mays' success. "He'll live on forever because he always had the biggest heart in the world. He loved his friends and family and would do anything for them. He was a generous soul and a great father."

Besides his wife, Mays is survived by a 3-year-old daughter and a stepson in his 20s, police said.

Okay, so yeah, whatever.... Your idea of charismatic and genuine shows a lot about your character, along with a rather aggressive, snide attack for no real reason.

You're right. It was inappropriate for me to comment my opinion of a second-rate product here. I should have stuck with my usual generic Rest in Peace and been done.

Buh-bye.

Dudette, That was not an attack. It was merely an observation, and a reaction to some very tasteless comments. I appologize if you saw it differently.

Good Day madame. Parting is such sweet sorrow.

Someone needs to invent a death rumor about Billy - like the Colonel Sanders rumors.

Billy Mays, tripped today while touring a factory. He accidentally fell into a vat of OxyClean. He was stripped to the bone within 10 seconds.

However, a testament to the effectiveness of OxyClean, when they recovered his bones, they were a pure, bright white without a trace of any blood stain.

I was going to say, Jules, they're dropping like flies!!

And I'm with ya--the guy might've annoyed me once in a great while, but he was charismatic--hard to not like him. Especially when hawking the wares. He was just likeable. RIP Billy. And, I hate to admit it, but in a weird way, I'm gonna miss seeing Billy's face on TV hawking the new versions of Oxy-Clean and Orange-Glo...

P.S. I did see an episode of Pitchmen on Discovery... it was very interesting! Man, talk about hitting the skids just when you get a really good gig.

Wow...Farrah , Ed, Michael, and now Billy...it is a BAD week to be a celebrity! I bet Tom Cruise is just sitting in the center of his couch, telling his publicist "NO! I'm not doing ANYTHING until Monday!"

Rest in peace Billy, I'll fondly remember being woken up by your infomercials because I fell asleep with the TV on and for some reason they have to triple the volume for your products to maximize their effectiveness.

Susan, my wife and I just had this debate. 50 years is not old , no...however celebrities are known for...umm...not treating their bodies too well . (Let's face it , most rock stars first platinum record goes straight up their noses) Now , I'm not saying that Mays had a drug or drinking problem or anything. (That's for the tabloids, and I'm sure there will be a 'friend of a friend who had the same gardener as Mays who KNOWS what he was REALLY like" article posted here within the hour)

However, drugs/alcohol abuse does seem to be the accepted norm with celebrities, and they all have the expendable income to do it quite regularly. So while it is speculative , it is one that has to be considered. Also the younger one dies , barring any OBVIOUS health issues...the quicker one starts considering outside causes.

Billy Mays was a hard-working family man. He didn't live in Hollywood or live that "lifestyle". He enjoyed a simple life in Tampa, Florida. The cause of his death was a massive heart attack. So, stop with the rumor-mongering. Billy was a good man. To imply otherwise is disrespectful at best.

If anything might be blamed, it could possibly be the bad plane landing on Saturday where he was bonked in the head really hard. I feel terribly for his family.

Plus, he was funny and loved his job - what's wrong with that - oxiclean works awesome for certain stains. This is sad!

      Betsy, Zed,

Thank you for your comments. They were heart felt and true. Billy Mays was a good man with a gentle heart and does not deserve the vitrol that is plaguing so many of these comment posts. Our world is turning darker every day, and we are in some very strange times. I would start watching what I say about others publicly if I were some of these people. I'm just saying.

Really, I hadn't heard heart attack either. If anything it reminded me of a friend who was hit in the head with a baseball at a game. We were all going to a bar-b-que after the game, so he said he was going to go home and take a shower. When he didn't show up, his wife went to see why and he was dead, in the shower. It was a brain hemmorage from being hit with the ball. Billy Mays hit his head in the plane.

Your vision has not turned out to be correct, yet.

Television pitchman Billy Mays likely died of a heart attack in his sleep, but further tests are needed to be sure of the cause of death.

Mr Mays was also taking pain killers for a 3rd up comming hip replacement surgery. He could have very well accidently overdosed. Either way, we will find out soon.

Cut the nasty crap guys, Billy Mays was someone we saw on tv every single day and while I hated his booming voice, I loved his warmth & lots of people liked him despite hating commercials. His new show gives an interesting background on how products are picked for hawking and how he personally had to believe in his product before he'd promote it. 50 years old is very young these days when 50 is the new 40 anyway. Despite Michael Jackson's untouchable greatness four famous people representing different eras and abilities died this week. I'm crossing my fingers that Patrick Swayze makes it through the week.

Oh well...we still have Joy Mangano to pitch all her stuff.

Oxy clean didn't work any better than any of the other cleaning products out there. Now you can buy all Mangano's hangers at Ross and T.J. Maxx...just wait a little after you see something being pitched on TV...a few months later you can always get it much cheaper.

Now I am waiting for those "Green Pans" to get really cheap after she is done pushing them on HSN! How many more people do they need to advertise for those pots & pans? If they were really good wouldn't they just sell themselves?

Nothing sells itself unless folks know about it. That's why companies spend millions of dollars to market their products. There's a whole industry devoted to informing the public about products and associated advantages.

Ann, please excuse if this sounds sarcastic, but obviously those infomercials got your attention. I have not even heard of them until now. Now I will check them out.

One other thing btw, when the products make it to the major markets at lower prices that means the product is actually doing very well.

It is a well known marketing technique that lowering the price of a mass marketed item will net the company much MUCH more in the long run than marketing it on a small scale with a higher price. Funny how the free market works...

Ok knock off thr nastyness. Billy Mays was a pitchman and the best of the lot. If you did not like his style you had the option of pushing the buttons on your remote. Oxy worked on stains as advertised. Best product he pitched was MIGHTY PUTTY worked on everything.

Billy, God Speed, see ya at the gates.

Our prayers to his friends and family

A really good product sells itself....Friends tell Friends and so on and so on!! When one of my many friends or relative finds a really good product I usualy find out about it eventually.

I don't need someone to shout at me or to go on and on about how great the product is that they are trying to sell me, just so that they can make more money for themselves. The products are usually always over priced anyway...just look how cheap they get once they go into CVS or Walgreens!

The worse a product is...the more people you need to pitch it.

Again, a perfect example of the free market system! Funny how that works, isn't it?

If Billy only sold crappy products, he would not have died the multimillionare that he was. He was a leader in his field and revered by many. Just because a few people make fun of the way he did it, does not make his products crappy.

He helped so many budding inventors get their lifelong dreams noticed. In the end, the free market decided if the products were worthwile. Oxyclean is now sold in most major stores in the USA, because of Billy Mays. He never hawked a product he did not believe in, and invoked the trust of many.

              He will be missed.

While I personaly had nothing against the guy he eventually made me want to mute the volume. In your face manicness can only go so far. He most likely was manic depressive. I wonder if he maybe OD"D or had delayed head trauma from having been hit in the head the day before. Natasha Richardson felt fine.

What in the heck is wrong with young people these days. Why is it so funny to them to attack and ridicule a successful person especially when something as horrible as death has happened. What a bunch of sad inhumane jerks we have become.

Jules: I mean no offense at all, but humor in the face of terrible and tragic events is the best kind of humor, in my opinion. I was very saddened to hear of Billy Mays's passing this morning, but the jokes I've seen thus far in this thread have not been in any way mean-spirited or vitriolic - they're just jokes. And some of them made me laugh. The way I see it, life is either a comedy or a tragedy, and it's up to you to pick which one. Life is full of terrible, tragic things. If you can't learn to find a way to laugh at them, then what is there left to laugh at?

I hate to say this but much of the world is in the toilet. There is little left in the world good and just. One word to descrbe all the hate comeing out now ENVY. Billy Mays made a good living and was happy with what he did. He was a success in life he made his own way and now that he is dead all the haters can make their ugly little comments.God help them, let them wallow in their hate and miserable little lives.

If you ever watched the show "Pitchmen," you'd have seen what a different person Billy was when not pitching a new product. The booming voice and energetic personality were markedly toned down in his everyday life. He helped many inventors get their products marketed, and gave us all something to joke about - he knew it too! Although I won't miss the annoying commercials, it's still sad that his life was cut short so suddenly. I really feel for his family, especially that baby.

Thank you Billy for your contribution to society.

You did what you had to do in life to provide for your family etc. Do it so well that you became a household name!

My condolences to his family and friends.

As for the jokes???? Well they are gonna happen regardless. It happens with every "celeb" death unfortunately. - MJ ones are running rampant, and in comparison to the ones here about Billy they are pretty vulgar. Some people just don't know how to edit their vocal thoughts at a sad time.

I tried it myself just yesterday - I ran my mouth at someone who was doing just the exact same thing to almost everyone around him on another page here, only to be called a "piece of **** by another person. So I rested my case firmly as closed as I did prove my point. The only time people actually pay much attention to others is when they are running off at the mouth or low-blowing another persons opinion.

Why is it impossible for a lot of people to make comment, statement or have a plain and simple opinion without having to resort to mind-numbing attention seeking stupidity? Or go on to attack another person and think there is no recourse?

Sheesh...society is getting scarier by the day.

Anyhoo Jules I enjoyed your page.

                    Thank You.

Please quit trying to add fuel to the fire. Get over it already. LIR has :-)

Not exactly, jaguar1. She appologized to all but Zed-7 but she did agree to calm down so I think overall she will be a better viner and I/m sure Zed-7 was long over it. Now who will join me for some cow pie? It's still warm... (teeheehee)

Okay...really i am over it and that just makes me the bigger person. but to clear a little something up...if you don't agree with me, it does NOT make you ignorant, i am not that vain.....just some things you said made you sound misinformed, Zed-7. And yeah, i am really over it :) and i can make mistakes and sound like an idiot sometimes, but this was not one of those times. Also, i don't hate people for no reason, hating people is actually something i avoid.....i never said i hated you either Zed-7, so.....

Thank you Jaguar1 for helping, lol. I have been over it the day it started, just lame crap :)

my girlfriend and i really enjoy the show " pitchmen " at first we couldnt stand billy.. and then trough the show , we started to like him , he was just fun , and full of energy. i saw him on the conan o brien show few days ago , and you can see he was happy to be there. it was the beginning of his success. it is always shocking to know people can leave so fast.. we really have to enjoy life. billy was interviewed when he came out of the plane. he would have never thought that the day after he wouldnt be alive.. rip billy..
