WASILLA — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin surprised supporters Friday and announced she is resigning from office at the end of the month without explaining why she plans to step down — throwing into question whether she would seek a run for the White House in 2012.
The news rattles a Republican Party plagued with setbacks in recent weeks, including extramarital affairs disclosed by two other 2012 presidential prospects, Nevada Sen. John Ensign and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.
Palin hastily called a news conference Friday morning at her home in suburban Wasilla, giving such short notice that only a few reporters actually made it to the announcement. Security blocked late-arriving media outside her home, and her spokesman, Dave Murrow, finally emerged to confirm that Palin will step down July 26. He refused to give details about the governor's future plans.
The former Republican vice presidential candidate said she had been considering leaving office since she decided not to run for re-election.
"Many just accept that lame duck status, and they hit that road. They draw a paycheck. They kind of milk it. And I'm not going to put Alaskans through that," Palin said.
Palin spokesman David Murrow said the governor didn't say anything to him about this being her "political finale." Murrow said he interpreted Palin's comment about working outside government as reflecting her current job only.
"She's looking forward to serving the public outside the governor's chair," he said.
Political analyst Larry Sabato, in Charlottesville, Va., said Palin's announcement left many wondering what her plans were.
"It's absolutely bizarre, and I think it eliminates her from serious consideration for the presidency in 2012," he said.
Palin hinted that she had a bigger role in mind, saying she wanted to make a "positive change outside government." But she kept supporters in suspense, promising later Friday on Twitter: "We'll soon attach info on decision to not seek re-election ... this is in Alaska's best interest, my family's happy ... it is good. Stay tuned."
Jerry McBeath, a veteran political science professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, called the pending resignation a "smart move," both for Palin and the state.
"Alaska is an isolated stage from which to operate if you want to figure in American national politics. I don't know what she has in mind, some TV show or some national radio show. There are opportunities for her, I'm sure."
"After all, Rush Limbaugh is getting old, and cranky, and the airwaves and the videowaves would benefit form a new present. She certainly is photogenic, and that is her area of experience. So I would say it's a response to opportunity instead of 'getting out before they get you,'" he said.
As for the state, he said Palin's departure will reduce the distractions and return Alaska to normal politics.
Palin said her family weighed heavily in her decision.
"This decision has been in the works for a while. This decision comes after much consideration, prayer and consideration," she said. "Finally, I polled the most important people in my life, my kids, where the count was unanimous. Well, in response to asking, 'Hey, you want me to make a positive difference and fight for all our children's future from outside the governor's office?' It was four yeses and one 'Hell, yeah!" And the hell, yeah sealed it."
Palin's decision not to seek re-election was a familiar one for a potential presidential candidate. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney chose not to seek another term as he geared up for an unsuccessful 2008 presidential bid. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has announced he won't seek another term, giving him plenty of free time ahead of a potential 2012 bid.
And Alaska's remote location seemed prohibitive for her to visit key early states such as Iowa, New Hampshire or South Carolina. She would lose at least a day for travel on each trip, while her competitors could make day trips to Des Moines, Manchester or Columbia to drive news.
By exiting the governor's office early, she wouldn't be held back by her day job's duties or be drawn into state-level fights with national implications. But the early exit from the governorship also raised questions about how seriously she takes her job.
Palin emerged from relative obscurity nearly a year ago when she was tapped as then Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate.
She was a controversial figure from the start, with comedian Tina Fey famously imitating her elaborate hairstyle and folksy "You betcha!" on "Saturday Night Live."
She didn't leave the limelight once McCain lost the presidency. She recently led a public spat with "Late Show" host David Letterman over a joke he made about one of her daughters being "knocked up" by New York Yankees baseball player Alex Rodriguez during the governor's recent visit to New York. Palin's 18-year-old daughter, Bristol, is an unwed, teenage mother. Letterman later apologized for the joke.
Her 2008 running mate, Sen. John McCain, wouldn't be offering reaction on Friday, a spokeswoman said.
Palin also complained that her 14-month-old son, Trig, who was diagnosed with Down's syndrome, had been "mocked and ridiculed by some mean-spirited adults recently." She didn't elaborate.
Fred Malek, a Republican strategist who has advised Palin over the past year, said Palin was "really unhappy with the way her life was going."
"She felt that the pressures of the job combined with her family obligations and the demands and desires to help other Republican candidates led her to decide not to run again. Once that decision was made, she realized, why not do it now and let the lieutenant governor take over and get a head start on his election," Malek said.
The 2008 vice presidential nominee was seen as a likely presidential contender in 2012 and had proved formidable among the party's base. But the last week brought a highly critical piece in Vanity Fair magazine, with unnamed campaign aides questioning if she was ever really prepared for the presidency.
The backbiting continued through the week, with follow-up articles recounting the nasty infighting that plagued her failed bid. Her advisers sniped with other Republicans, underscoring the deeply divided GOP looking for its next standard bearer.
Palin's resignation announcement caught Republicans and Democrats alike by surprise, but it also suggested she had her eyes on another presidential run. She alluded to how she could help change the country and help military members — code that she didn't think her time on the national stage was over.
But the early exit from the governorship also raised questions about how serious she takes her job.
Palin's resignation, timed on the eve of the July 4 holiday when many Americans had already begun a three-day weekend, seemed designed to avoid publicity while openly leaving office.
Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the governor's picnic in Fairbanks at the end of the month.
Palin was first elected in 2006 on a populist platform. But her popularity has waned as she waged in partisan politics following her return from the presidential campaign. Her term would have ended in 2010.
Palin expressed frustration with her current role as governor.
"I cannot stand here as your governor and allow the millions of dollars and all that time go to waste just so I can hold the title of governor," Palin said.
Palin's decision even took Parnell by surprise. He said he was told on Wednesday evening, and was not aware that any presidential ambitions were behind the move.
Other recent GOP troubles include affairs by Ensign and Sanford. Ensign, a member of the Christian ministry Promise Keepers, stepped down from the Senate Republican leadership last month after admitting he had an affair for much of last year with a woman on his campaign staff who was married to one of his Senate aides. Ensign later disclosed he had helped the woman's husband get two jobs during the affair.
A government watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, wants the Senate ethics committee and the Federal Election Commission to investigate.
Just days after news of Ensign's affair broke, Sanford admitted an affair with a woman in Argentina. Some lawmakers are now calling for his resignation. Before the admission, Sanford had been missing from the state for five days visiting his lover. He had slipped his security detail, lied to his staff about where he was and failed to transfer power to the lieutenant governor in case of a state emergency.
The party's troubles seem to have left two prominent 2012 prospects, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and 2008 presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, unscathed, however.
C anderson, What do you mean, protect the kids? She is the one that paraded the entire clan on stag from the get go! You reap what you sow. Also, if she hadn't been a hypocrite, liar and opportunist from day one, she wouldn't have been attacked so viciously.
ALL politicians include their kids in their campaigning. We have seen plenty of the Obama girls, Chelsea, etc. None of them have been maligned like the Palin kids. People who use a special needs child as ammunition against his mother are just plain inhuman.
I find it interesting that so-called adults think that a pregnant teen is a target. Perhaps they would prefer an abortion? Shouldn't the family be allowed to make that choice? Bristol isn't the first pregnant teen and she won't be the last. The Democratic party likes to claim they are "for the people." Truth is, they are just for their people and have no problem being cruel to children. It's really sad indeed. If people can't see that, I can't help them.
Don't get me wrong, I would never vote for Palin. However, there is no excuse for the cruelty shown to her children.
Unlike Palin, Obama didn't hide behind his kids when boo'ed. He didn't thrust them front and center.
And the issue with Bristol's pregnancy is that Palin subscribes to the abstinence only mindset, the 'save yourself until marriage' group, yet her own daughter fell short of that, proving her beliefs a sham.
Any 'cruelty' is because of Palin's own choices to hide behind her children.
So, that gives people an excuse to attack the children? I'm afraid not. Go ahead and attack the candidate---leave the kids alone. Why is that so hard?
c anderson, You reap what you sow. Palin paraded her kids EVERYWHERE! If she didn't want them to be part of the circus, she should have kept them at home. Period.
She paraded them everywhere and you disapproved. I get that. So, you must attack the children because you don't like what she did? That isn't very adult, is it? I'm not saying that I love Palin, I'm saying that we should be adult enough not to pick on kids. I still don't see how anyone can justify attacking children no matter what you think of their parents. There is no excuse. Period.
No one is attacking the kids. They're attacking the hypocrisy of the mother. There is a difference, even if you can't see it.
c anderson,
Its not that she paraded them. She preached on and on about family values and didn't even have her shop in order? Its like a liberal preaching clean environment clean environment and dumping oil in the ocean. Also its not what she did it was what her children whom were raised by her did. Also in my family when you have a baby or get married you are an adult no matter what age as in your kicked out living on your own.
Children are off-limits, but I seem to remember Chelsea Clinton being called a "dog" and having Rush say that "she's so ugly because Janet Reno is her father", and even the "liberal media" was atatcking her, her character was in the beavis and butthead movie which was made by MTV for God's sake, but her family never cried, and dropped their responsibilities, her family never demanded a public apology
Lemmy and Quid, Thank you for expanding on what I was trying to say. And, C anderson, yes, I am saying that I disapprove of the way she used her children during (and after) the election.
Yes tweetheart- I agree
Again-she used her children to get votes, she rarely made a speech without them, and she rarely says a speech in which she doesn't bring them up
c anderson, The Obamas did not parade their kids everywhere like Palin did. The Obama Girls were only seen at highlights, like their father's announcement of his pres. run, the Demo Convention. They were not on the campaign trail like Palin's kids were. She made her husband and kids part of the campaign, so yes, that means they are targets. You cannot have it both ways.
The cruelty to children charge you lobby against the press and other critics really belongs to Palin and Todd - putting your kids in the political spotlight is cruel. She should never have taken the VP offer with that 17-year-old pregnant - that poor girl had enough to deal with without being scrutinized by the entire world.
How can I make people understand? Of course she paraded them around. Of course it was wrong. No doubt about it. Still, that shouldn't give us the right to pick on the kids. Pick on the parents and leave the kids alone. I don't know why that is such a confusing concept.
c anderson, I don't really see anyone picking on the "kids". Bristol is eighteen, right? She is considered to be an adult now. As far as the other kids are involved, I have never said anything about the other kids (other than to kid around about the names that the parents gave them). We are condemning the parents for making their own children part of the "Palin Circus".
Good news!
She's got a psychotic mind. Illiterate as hell and she's convinced she's worth a lot and deserving of being president. OMG Republicans are *SUCH* fd up people, really.
And if you can do it better get on out there. yea right. not a chance got back to sleep.
And if you can do it better get on out there. yea right. not a chance got back to sleep.
What?
Oh please give me a break. There are plenty of Republican women out there who aren't half-illiterate. You're telling me Palin is the best you people have got?
I don't know Kathe Sarah, but I would vote for before I would for Sarah Palin
KFPH :)
I'd vote for Crusty the Clown before I'd vote for Sarah Palin LOL
LOL!! I'm so scared of clowns-but yeah-you're right! Friend Request Please!!!
KFPH LOL! True. Clowns are scary!
Friend request completed! ;-)
I'd vote for Crusty the Clown before I'd vote for Sarah Palin LOL
I believe you did vote for Crusty the Clown, or was that Crusty and the Clown...LOL.
Krusty, I'm sure, would appreciate correct billing.
I think he was referring to McCain...or else my sense of humor is a little twisted...
If you haven't seen it, here's the link to an approximately 7 minute minute clip of her resignation press conference:

All I can say about it is, WOW!!! Bizarre, absolutely bizarre. To think this wackjob almost was a heartbeat away from CIC. Ya know, GOP, for all your digs at Obama about how he supposedly can't speak without a teleprompter, maybe Sarah Palin should invest in one. It might help her to take a breath, pause, and insert the occaisional period in between sentences.
Well, Palin IS a wack job, but remember, there already IS a certifiable wack job just 2 steps from the Predidential office and that is Nancy Pelosi!!!
as opposed to the "whackjob" that has given us 9.5% unemployment and a socialist economy with government spending accounting for 49% of the GDP, right behind France and Sweden. Whew...we really dodged a bullet there!
How dare you talk about George W. Bush like that. [SARCASM]
I guess you believe that everything was just peachy up until the day Obama took office? If you do, you are wrong.
I guess you believe that everything was just peachy up until the day Obama took office? If you do, you are wrong.
Nope everything wasn't peachy, but Obama is making it worse and faster then Bush ever could.
Hmmm. She's really nervous about something.
Sorry, but winners NEVER quit and quitters NEVER win! She is done unless the Republicans end up SO desperate for someone to run, and in her case, landslide victory for Obama in 2012. There is NO reason she should not have served out her Gov role until 2010.
Like the Letterman fight, she loses this too, she REALLY IS NOT ready for prime time! Way too lightweight!
You all have it wrong.
She has the family sharpening the crayons so she can "write" her autobiography. A tell all book about how the media is out to get her and all those that try and tell the truth as they misconstrue it. Now to find some author that can string a series of unrelated catch phrases together so she can put her name on it and say she wrote it.
end sarcasam
If this nut thinks she can become President of the United States then she is crazier than I though.
EI
Well said, she should be out in the woods tracking down Bullwinkle.
She couldn't even be governor of Alaska, a state that gets the most federal tax money back from Uncle Sam. I love how the Alaskans claim to be so individualistic and independent, when in truth they are the most subsidized state in the union.
so true magsby, the state that gets more federal money than any other!
Everytime she left Alaska a Democratic Group would file an ethics violation charging she was using State Funds. All of them were cleared except one where she had to reimburse the $9k for travel expenses. Total legal bills though topped $500K. To say the Democrats had made it impossiable to do her job is an understatement. She wasn't a rich woman, she does run a successful business with her husband so she did the only smart thing she could and that's to make it so the Democrats couldn't keep bringing her to court for trumpted up charges.
I find it disgusting and distasteful that should a person runs for office that they can expect financial ruin. The sexist remarks, the untrue rumors and blogs, hell most of the people can't even tell you why they hate her they just do.
She's a Christian, we still have Freedom of Religion in this country. She attended University of Idaho where she recieved a Bachelors in Journalism, so there goes the "she isn't educated" part. She's served in many Political Positions through out her life and had a 93% Approval Rating in 2007. She runs a very successful Business with her Husband that they started without the assistance of anyone. Has five children and when her daughter came to her about being Pregnant she supported her daughter. She is against Abortion and it's a decision that she had to face with her last child. A difficult one.
I could see why the Democrats are scared of a strong willed, intelligent woman, who believes in famly values and morals. My problem with the Democrats is how they still continued to go after her and her children long after the election was over. Their goal was to not only destroy her and her family, but to send a message that not only would they destroy you if you challenged them, but they would destroy your family also. Nobody in America should be the subject of personnel destruction just because of an election.
Bless you, you just go right on believing that hun! She can fool some of the people some of the time! BTW, I have some swampland to sell you if you are interested...
Having a college degree does not make one educated. Mrs. Palin attended five different colleges before obtaining her degree. Some for only a semester. She obtained her degree in journalism and obtained a job as a sports reporter.
If I were governor of a state with less than 700,000 residents and I gave them a energy refund distribution, I would probably have a 93% approval rating, too. Her approval rating as of May 5, 2009 is 59%. It looks like her approval ratings have been declining since her June 21, 2007 approval rating high of 93%.
If I were running for President or Vice-President, I would keep my children out of the public spotlight. President Obama did for the most part. I believe George W. Bush did as well. It's the responsible and respectable thing for a parent to do. Don't you think?
As far as being scared of her, anyone with an ounce of common sense should be scared of having her as President or Vice-President. She is simply NOT qualified.
Close your eyes. Now ask yourself if you would want your daughter to spend the summer at her house. Now open your eyes. Has your opinion of her changed? I wouldn't want my daughter to stay in her house.
Jason, Palin was the expert at telling untrue rumors. And, how many colleges did she attend before she got her degree? Democrats are not afraid of this nitwit! We just can't stand her.
Oh my dear, what planet do you live on? It's not just the Democrats who hate Sarah Palin in Alaska - it is 2/3rds of her own party!
This woman is a Barbie! She looks good but there is no substance. She could not even make it through the term as governor - she does not have the disposition, perseverance and tough skin necessary for national political office.
She lives on a steady diet of whine and cheese.
If Rush Limbaugh interviews her, she may still have a chance in the GOP, but I strongly doubt it. I think they wrote her off after the Letterman fiasco (he was out of line but she should have ignored it) and now that the Vanity Fair article has come out, she's dead meat. There is something else lurking beneath the surface here - I'm sure we'll learn more in the weeks ahead.
With Ensign, Sanford - talk about whack jobs - and Palin, the GOP has taken some huge hits this past month alone. Now Franken is in the senate.
The greatest show on earth - American politics.
She is a walking sexist comment, as a woman, she is more offensive than the "ass-slapping guy at the office"
KFPH, No, I would have to say that would be a tie for the most offensive. I am a woman and Palin offends me. I have also been on the receiving end of a bunch of sexist men where I worked and that is also VERY offensive.
tweet, I am sorry to hear that, but there are some pigs out there.
Man, unattractive and uncompetitive liberal women (yes, I'm aware of the redundency) sure can get nasty when bested by conservative Christian babes.
kiss, You certainly couldn't be talking about me! I am attractive, liberal, intelligent and competitive. The difference between Palin and most successful women is that Palin doesn't have any of the qualities listed above except for being somewhat attractive, and even then, beauty it is in the eye of the beholder. I don't think that someone is attractive unless the beauty is external and internal. Oh, and by the way, I am a Christian.
She made a terrific choice for herself. Now, if she's smart, she will stay out of politics but continue to be a player on the public stage. She's got a book deal, she can get a job at FOX easily (after all, she first wanted to be a TV broadcaster), she can become a televangelist of some sorts or "spiritual leader" for her evangelical followers.
Her adoring fans will throw big money at her, and the rest of the population will be appeased that she's out of politics and can't put the country in any danger because of her inexperience and lack of knowledge.
So it's a win-win for everybody if she does what I said before. A win for her, for her fans, for the future GOP candidates (who wanted her out anyway), and for everybody else who didn't believe in her political competence.
I would vote for her for President.
I would of voted for her as President over Obama. At least she was honest and sincere.
She was doing a great job as Governor and had made substantial changes that was good for the State. She did a lot more as Governor then Obama did as Senator which says a lot about his Presidency.
I read a lot of the threads here and most of them are really vile, hateful, and at times evil. All in all the entire group seems to be an unhappy one. It really speaks volumes on the type of people who make up the Far Left and to be honest there is no amount of Change that Obama could do to help you. I have never seen so much hate and self loathing in one place but then again I don't go to the Far Left Sites that often.
I think Palin is an embarrassment and a joke, and I'm a Republican.
She did a lot more as Governor then Obama did as Senator which says a lot about his Presidency.
It says absolutely nothing about his presidency. Absolutely nothing.
I just watched her statement on TV,it was a rambling mess.
So true, Burlap! A rambling mess. Isn't that what happens every time Palin opens her mouth?
Well, let's see... Alaska Report had a note up that there were three more ethics charges pending. Celtic Diva's gathered the stupidly high amount of funds required to get access via a Freedom of Information act to every e-mail exchanged between selected Palin staff and selected media (like, for example, Eddie Burke), and, I'm sure, will be posting every word on her blog, then filing, most likely, at least one if not more ethics complaints. If there's anybody with a clue at the IRS, they're crawling up the family's collective undershorts with a microscope, given the shoddy condition of her released returns. (First time I've EVER seen a financial release with an excuse note.)
I'm betting her quitting is a dodge to try to get around some pretty hefty charges
Thanks to ALL you democrats for showing your mental acuity..... minus .01 and counting.
Sara Palin was attacked by you and the media from day one. Who WOULD WANT to run for any office under those circumstances. There are alot of really great people out there both democrats and republicans and THEY WON'T RUN because they do not want to subject themselves to the kind of treatment that Palin received............ thanks......... thanks alot......... for helping KILL any chance we may have of getting QUALIFIED people to run (and by Qualified - even Obama does not fit that category).
And by the way............ I do hope the word INHERITED is now out of Obama's dictionary - because he and the democrats get ALL the credit for what is happening now - which isn't saying much at ALL.
dis
Ms Palin is exactly what she appears to be, not ready for prime time!
You're welcome. She was exposed for who she is: a mountain of ignorance only rivaled by her blind ambition and she took the easy way out, leaving her people in Alaska high and dry.
Cry me a river...but don't worry, you'll get to see your beloved Sarah on that channel you never leave: Fox News.
disgusted, Good. It worked. She's leaving. Now run away, Palin. Go hunt some moose or something. Kind, good description of that loser...a mountain of ignorance!
So- Sarah quits because the media attacks her
Yet in the same paragraph you blame all the ills in modern recent history on Obama????
Clarification............ I can go either way about Palin.......... the WAY she was treated by the democrats and the MEDIA is my MAJOR concern and I reiterate - no REPUBLICAN or DEMOCRAT - at least the good ones - will subject themselves to that type of "behavior" for lack of a better word
You guys are soooooooo going to eat your words before this is all over and done with.... I just hope and pray that we still have an America that can function........ and on that note
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO AMERICA AND HER FOUNDING FATHERS - "GOD" BLESS AMERICA
Instaed of Lt. Gov. taking over from Sarah Palin, Tina Fey could do the job.....
Go away, Palin, and leave us alone!
I'm a democrat but I'm also a woman, wife, and a mother and that side of me feels sorry for her. I always have. I think she means well, but she's just not capable of being in this fight. She's a typical wife and mother with a wife and mother attitude and there is nothing wrong with that. It's just not going to cut it in a leadership position for long and not at all if the seat is to high. It takes a certain kind of person to do this kind of thing male or female and Sarah is just not that person. She's charismatic, pretty, and she's not dumb or she would not have gotten as far as she did so I'll say smart. She's just not a barracuda, she's not a beast.
I think she did this because of the pressure and strain on her kids. People are evil and they take shots where they shouldn't. Some things, even for comedians, need to be off limits. There is such a thing as going to far and people have gone way to far with Palin. If blame and fault must be placed, look to McCain who sought this inexperienced women out, put her on display, casting her in with the wolves, and then let her fall just like he did his poor ex-wife. She was fine where she was, and never a match for Hillary. Put the two beside each other and you can see the difference.
I don't care about her political beliefs I do care that she is a wife, a mother, and a woman who has dealt with painful things said not only about her but about her children. Not all right at all.
So, in other words, she's out of her league.
You might possibly be right, and she resigned simply because of that.
I think there's a whole lot underneath this that we don't yet know.
I don't think that Palin has the brains to know that she is out of her league. I mean, she thought that she could be the vice-president of the United States!
Honey, there are lots of stupid people holding public office in this country and in others. Intelligence is not a prerequisite for the job. You just need to have good staff. A guy I went to grad school with is now a congressman. He almost didn't get a pass on his comps - comprehensive examinations taken at the end of study before you being work on a dissertation - because the committee thought he cheated and there were other "ethic concerns" regarding papers, etc. Now, he sits in the US congress.
I grew up one block from the state capitol building in my home state and was surrounded by politicians all my life - most of them are dumber than door knobs. They are charming and pleasant - that is what it takes to get votes, not smarts.
Dennis....... out of her "league" ???? God help us all for that "league" That "League" is what put us in this overall situation................... league indeed........... they should get on their knees and ask forgiveness for all the CRAP they have done to America !!!
mag, Honey....Palin is dumber than a box of rocks. As far as I am concerned, intelligence IS a prerequisite. Sorry you don't agree.
THE STORY of SAINT SARA
Once upon a time there was this big fish in a small pond called Alaska, her name was Sara Palin. Beyond the pond, out in the vast ocean called The lower 48, (the continental United States) Sara was a virtual unknown. Then one day a sad Senator from Arizona who was running for President, whose campaign was in big trouble because he could not get the Extreme Christian Right Wing support that he needed to become President, so senator McCain decided to pick Sara Palin as his VP running mate in the 2008 Presidential election, suddenly, this unknown big fish was thrust upon the ocean of national celebrity. She traded in her jeans and flannel shirt for thousands of dollars worth of, stylish and sophisticated clothing that made her look hot.
The previously lethargic Christian Right Wing Base, that got George The Buffoon Bush elected, which was not to thrilled with McCain; was suddenly energized and they went insane for Sara Palin, she was their saviour, their Joan of Arc, she was to them "Saint Sara". She was what they needed to get all ginned up for the McCain Campaign. McCains dream had finally come true, he had gotten the support of the Extreme Christian Right wing for his Campaign. Now instead of a few hundred or a couple of thousand coming to his rallies, tens of thousands came to his rallies. They were almost as big as the Obama rallies. McCain was sure that the disappointed Hillary supporters would also vote for him, just because he had a female running mate. His victory was assured.
Unfortunately for McCain, he took to much for granted, women were not as dumb as he thought, and they did not fall for his flimsy strategy - they voted for Obama in large numbers. Also unfortunate was McCains miscalculation; in using Palin he got the right wing religious base, but in so doing he sacrificed tens of thousands of real Conservative Republicans, Independents, Moderate Republicans, Liberal Republicans and Conservative Democrats. So much so that his opponent Barack Obama flipped 9 red states that went for George the Buffoon Bush in '04 to blue. His Palin strategy had failed and he went down in defeat.
But Saint Sara was ambitious and hungry for power, she could never go back to that little pond. She kept leaving it to go play in the ocean. She got on Jet planes and visited the lower 48 frequently and she even visited foreign countries. She loved the attention and notoriety, she put herself out in the spot light when ever she could and she used her family as props for political gamesmen-ship when ever she could. She had tasted Celebrity and fame she was bitten by the bug, and so she ignored her responsibilities to the people that elected her to serve as Governor in that little pond (Alaska). She was not there like she use to be, before she became nationally known and famous.
Saint Sara could not forget how close she came, only a heart attack away form the Presidency of the United States...... So close, but she had amassed a loyal following of Extreme Right Wing Christian ideologues who worshipped her. They loved how she Miss-characterized her opponent as a terrorist and her divisive speeches about Good parts of America and Bad parts of America, the good parts being the ones that supported her of course, and the bad parts being the ones that supported her opponent. She winked and smiled with approval when supporters attending her rallies, yelled out for Barack Obamas death, and she continued with out pause or conscience with her slanderous and divisive hate speech.......You Betcha....wink....wink.... ;-)
What was Saint Sara to do? She decided to quite her position as Governor 18 months before the end of her term, she turn her back on the people that voted for her when she had asked for their support. She gave a sudden surprise announcement and a rambling incoherent speech full of phony non excuses as explanation for her quitting her term before it ended. Of course Saint Sara had gotten all she could get out of her position as Governor of Alaska, now her sights are on the 2012 chance for power.
Unfortunately for Saint Sara, the Extremist Right Wing Christian ideologues that worship her, were not big enough to get her elected in 2008 and they will not be big enough to get her elected in 2012, they are out numbered by the majority, the Independents, the Moderate Republicans, the Conservative Republicans, the Conservative Democrats, the Liberal Republicans, you know the normal Americans. Saint Sara doesn't have a clue and she's to dumb to figure it out.
Bye...Bye..."Saint Sara"
brightstarone -- that was really good, you obviously put a lot of thought into it. Nice read, thanks.
brightstarone, that was excellent! Well thought out and executed. (pun intended)
Thank you,
PenniD & Dave in Ma.
It was a pleasant surprise to get positive feed back for a change, after mocking "Saint Sara". Usually when I criticize her, her worshippers come out of the wood work in force and they attack...attack...attack with vigorous name calling.
They really love that air head, thank God most people can see her for what she is; a phony posturing self serving politician.
Nice to hear from normal Americans, Thanks.
That was one of the best post I have ever read here on the vine. I don't think it will last so if I were you I would copy and paste it somewhere else. It was brilliant!
Friends request sent!
I did copy and paste it to word., and printed it for all my Liberal friends to read, and a few of my Republican relatives to boot.
Thank you, Dave in Ma.
Nice to have you as a friend. :-)
:) Anytime!
Brightstarone, well done, the continuining Saga, oh, sorry, Story of Saint Sarah really needs to be its own article...
you guys are disgusting - slapping one another on the back for what? intelligent posting!!!! give me a break - give everyone a break........
So all mighty wise ones - do you actually think that OBAMA is the answer. Can you think of anyone else - Republican or Democrat that can do a better job - please..... I'm serious ............ since you obviously cannot stand Palin and I do not believe that Obama is the answer and I hope we can only SURVIVE him.............. who else is there.... come on....... you are portraying to have intelligence........... who else..........
Because of the current posturing of the media and the democratic party - no one in their right minds would want to take that on......... and where does that leave America - in the hands of people like you............. God help us all
"God help us all"
(s)he did back in November...

"you guys are disgusting-slapping one another on the back for what? intelligent posting!!!!give me a break-give everyone a break...."
"Us guys" are fellow Americans discussing a current topical political issue, that is in the news. We are offering our thoughts and opinions on the topic being discussed.
That is not disgusting as you put it, that is - FREE SPEECH - their are thousands of fallen American Hero's buried in battle fields all over the world, who gave up their lives so that we can exercise our freedom to think and speak. That is not disgusting, that is a correct and legitimate exercise of our Constitutional Rights.
Apparently; you don't seem to like free speech when it is contrary to your opinion. Well that's not how it works, we can say what we think. If you find that unacceptable, to bad. Since freedom of speech that is contrary to your opinions disturbs and disgust you so much, you might want to consider relocating to North Korea or Iran, the governments there don't like free speech that is contrary either.
"So all mighty wise ones - do you actually think that Obama is the answer."
The seed was about Saint Sara, the topic that we were discussing was about Saint Sara, so what does Obama have to do with Saint Sara quiting her post and turning her back on the people that voted to make her Governor of Alaska?
Answer: Nothing at all.
Then why did disgusted-550171 bring Obama up?
Answer: Because disgusted-550171 is an Obama Hater, and Obama Haters will always try to make any discussion, no matter how unrelated or off topic it may be - about President Obama, so that they can crap all over him. Thus: satisfying their pathological hatred of the man.
By the way I must congragulate you on your choice of name "disgusted" it fits you very well. What other names do you call yourself?
Well said. I am going to be a brightstarone reader/fan. Sending a friend's requst. You go!
Happily accepted and thank you PenniD. :-)
brightstarone, I love that story.
Thank you tweetheart44, :-)
Palin in not going to run for president. She would not quit in the middle of her term if that were the case. My guess is something is up. She quit before she could get fired. Ambitious people don't just quit out of the blue. She says she is tired of the media but she has stoked the fires all along. I could not be happier. But it never ceases to amaze me the right wings who defend her, I've never witnessed a group of people more deaf and dumb. But I guess I shouldn't be surprise since these same braniacs brought us George W.
She isn't in the middle of it, she's 3/4th through it. But, it still makes her a quitter. I'm with you, I'm happy. Alaska has not been happy with her since she took office. Even the Republican newspapers were writing exposes about her and Todd's activities.
Amen to your last 2 sentences.
Sarah Palin just needs a little time to take care of her newly pregnant 16 year old daughter. And guess what? A-Rod's not the father.
Finally, some good news.
Glad to hear it Sarah. See you in the 2012 race to the whitehouse!
When Palin resigned as Governor, check out her father's body language at news conf., What is next shoe to drop? Whenever it is it is going to be bad.....
Rita, I think so, too. There is something else lurking below the surface here.
There is speculation a criminal investigation is going to be started on her. Another Republican in trouble? In AK to boot? No surprise there whatsoever.
I used to be a Republican, but couldn't support Bush or Palin. If they have a brain between them I would have thought it would show at least once!
This isn't about mean. It's disappointment that there wasn't at least one decent person affiliated with the Republican party that really could lead this country to showcase the best of what America has to offer to itself and the world instead of the worst.
They have united this country in ways they never intended - against their party.
She must really be a threat for all of you to concern yourselves and keep bashing her. How many of you have children.......grandchildren.........that would endure the bashing she has had from you, the media and now even her own party. I am ashamed as an American with BOTH parties and their actions. With the way this Administration is heading our country, we won't have to worry about parties.........maybe just tyranny.
She spoke very well today........and may I said without a telepromter. She spoke from the heart something I think now is lacking in BOTH parties.
The only "concern" was that she might have become President some day, a concern shared by a great many people whether from the left, right, or center.
And I believe a great many can agree she willingly gave out a lot bashing ammunition for those so inclined to bash her with.
The woman is a train-wreck. She has kept putting herself in the public eye, doing ridiculous (even trashy) things like having a public argument with her daughter's baby-daddy. She's a joke. Hopefully, she'll now go away.
She spoke very well today........
She rambled well, as usual. And what was with this talk of "we" are going to do this outside the governor's office, "we" are going to do that, "our" plans are this or that. She sounded like the Queen of England using the "royal" WE.
Nah, VerbalBarb, didn't you see the mouse that she had in her pocket? :)
Palin sure was nervous about something. You think she would've at least prepared some 3x5 index cards instead of blathering.
There's something really curious going on behind this whole thing.
Darlene Bays, you need to read some history. Do you have any idea of the bashing that First Ladies in the past have withstood? Even dear Martha Washington was pilloried by the press. They basically killed Andrew Jackson's wife before he was even inaugurated and Mary Todd Lincoln was accused of being a southern traitor and everything but a child of God.
Except for Washington, their husbands all endured the same thing. Lincoln was called a baboon, an ignorant woodsman, and other things I can't repeat here - and that was by members of his own party.
Sarah Palin is the kind of woman who has gotten by on her looks and superficial charm all her life. She simply does not have the stamina, character or tough mindedness to be in national politics.
Also, in a few more days when the rest of this story comes out, she might be eating your words. There is something else under the surface here that is making her quit. There is another family scandal or two that must be a humdinger.
I'll be back to eat my words if I'm wrong.
Darlene-she used her children to get votes, and it backfired on her, and now she's crying foul
Kathe, If that's the best they've got, they might as well throw in the towel. Like I said before, if the Republicans want even a remote chance of winning in the next election, they'd better get crackin' on finding a decent candidate. That is, if there are any in the Republican Party.
