WASHINGTON — In dueling holiday addresses, President Barack Obama appealed for public support of his domestic programs and Sen. John McCain said Americans should side with Iranian election protesters.

The 2008 rivals for the White House both cited the spirit of the nation's founders in their Fourth of July radio and Internet broadcasts on Saturday.

Obama said an "unyielding spirit is what defines us as Americans" and led people during the nation's history to explore the West, persevere during the Depression and build a robust industrial economy.

"That is the spirit we are called to show once more," Obama said. "We are facing an array of challenges on a scale unseen in our time. We are waging two wars. We are battling a deep recession. And our economy — and our nation itself — are endangered by festering problems we have kicked down the road for far too long: spiraling health care costs; inadequate schools; and a dependence on foreign oil."

He said the same spirit will be needed to deal with problems "we cannot defer any longer," citing several areas:

_Revamping the education system, demand more from teachers, parents and students and "build schools that prepare every child in America to outcompete any worker in the world."

_Overhauling the health care system "that is imposing crushing costs on families, businesses, large and small, and state and federal budgets."

_Making clean energy "the profitable kind of energy so that we can end our dependence on foreign oil and reclaim America's future."

The House narrowly passed Obama's energy bill, and Congress is developing legislation to overhaul the health care system, making care more affordable and providing coverage for millions of the uninsured.

McCain, R-Ariz., said the U.S. has a moral obligation to publicly denounce the Iranian government and support Iranians who feel cheated by the election.

"Today, we stand with the millions of Iranians who brave batons, imprisonment and gunfire to have their voices heard and their votes counted," McCain said. "They do not ask us to arm them or come to their assistance with anything other than public declarations of solidarity, and public denunciations of the tyrants who oppress them. We have a moral obligation to do so."

Iran's leadership has tried to erase doubts about the legitimacy of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad by portraying the unrest as sparked by foreign meddling. Protesters say the June 12 election was fraudulent.

Obama has tried to balance being supportive of the protesters without giving the Tehran government more cause to crack down.

Republican lawmakers have pushed the president to more forcefully denounce Iran's leadership, and McCain kept at it.

On the domestic front, Obama said some critics of his programs "would have us try what has already failed.'

But he said they need to remember history.

"They forget that we, as a people, did not get here by standing pat in a time of change," he said. "We did not get here by doing what was easy. That is not how a cluster of 13 colonies became the United States of America."

"We are not a people who fear the future. We are a people who make it," Obama said. "And on this July Fourth, we need to summon that spirit once more."

President Obama's words: "No iron fist is strong enough to shut off the world from bearing witness to the peaceful pursuit of justice." I like that! It applies to so many issues, doesn't it?

We are given the right to pursue happiness, each and everyone of us. This is one of the freedoms we all enjoy, as Americans.

I hope we remember that Alaskans have this right as well.

I hope the dudes in dark glasses are sitting under shade trees enjoying cold lemonaid reading their lap tops. I one day would like to go to Alaska just to view the Northern Lights. That would be beautiful along with the sparkling of fireworks in the sky adding to the view.

Barack Hussein Obama is an underqualified affirmative action office holder.

His "hope and change" message will wear thin soon enough.

We are headed fo 12-13% unemployment. The current 9.5% rate does not include another 7% who can find only part time work ---- and does not include about another 1% who have stopped looking for work.

The massive spending ---- and the running of the printing presses to crank out more dollar bills ---- will result in significant inflation in the next year or so. This will result in an increase in the interest rates. An increase in interest rates will put more pressure on many families with adjustable rate mortgages. This will result in another round of foreclosures.

The Cap and Destroy legislation will add fuel to the inflationary fire because this legislation will increase the price of every product and service that requires energy to bring to the market ---- in a word "everything." This will compound the difficulty with inflation and the ARM's. The nice thing is that if winter heating prices don't quite double, families will be able to share homes to cut down on the green house gases ---- and save a little money. Food might cost a bit more, what with it costing more to plant, cultivate and harvest. But what the hell. We have too many overweight people in the country. This will be a good experience for us. We can turn it into a positive learning event.

Throw some real gasoline on this fire. Pass and "immigration reform" bill that results in millions of additional people automatically eligible for the full array of federal "assistance." Then, of course, bring in several millions of their relatives. Of course, we will not necessarily be bringing in an educated immigrant population. Heavens no. We can't do that in a world that is becoming increasingly "high tech."

Oh well. When the @!$%# hits the fan in the streets of this country, the government will be able to give the injured free medical care.

Hope and Change. It's out there, as Agent Muldor always said. I wanna believe!

President Obamas' black skin makes your blood boil, brings out the hate, jealousy, envy, and anger from you people. It's funny. Oh by the way, it's not an entourage, it's called black family members. All you haters cover up the red streak on your necks and lets enjoy the 4th of July. Get over it, there's a black man in the White House.

Obama has tried to balance being supportive of the protesters without giving the Tehran government more cause to crack down.

The bias of the media and this author is plain to see. obama was concerned not to upset his pro-islamic foreign policy agenda, not with the protestors. He toured the middle east and never once spoke for freedom or democracy. He would sacrifice the protestors to further his foreign policy agenda, just as he would sacrifice rural americans who cling to guns and religion for his domestic agenda.

McCain ran an unbelievably unfocused and ineffective campaign, or we would not be in this mess now. His campaign advisors who are busy bashing Palin should explain why he pulled such a stupid political stunt as suspending his campaign not once but twice. He was ahead in the polls until he announced for the second time he was suspending campaigning to deal with the economic crisis-- that stupid move stole all his momentum and handed the election to obama.
