Colin Powell worries Obama tackling too much

WASHINGTON — Colin Powell worries that President Barack Obama is trying to tackle too many big issues at one time and he offers this advice: take a hard look at costs and consider the additional red tape that will be created.

"The right answer is, `Give me a government that works,'" the former secretary of state said in a television interview to be aired Sunday. "Keep it as small as possible," added Powell, who said he has spoken recently with Obama and stays in touch with him. Powell, a Republican, endorsed Obama last year over the GOP presidential nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Obama wants to overhaul the health care system and take on climate change while also helping the country emerge from the recession.

"I think one of the cautions that has to be given to the president — and I've talked to some of his people about this — is that you can't have so many things on the table that you can't absorb it all. And we can't pay for it all," Powell said.

"And I never would have believed that we would have budgets that are running into the multi-trillions of dollars, and we are amassing a huge, huge national debt that, if we don't pay for in our lifetime, our kids and grandkids and great grandchildren will have to pay for it."

It's not a new theme for Powell

He complained about the government's size and intrusiveness in his 1996 speech to the Republican National Convention. He said then that the nation no longer could afford more entitlements, higher taxes and more bureaucracy. In the interview with CNN's "State of the Union" that is to air Sunday, Powell said he hasn't changed his mind.

"Keep it as small as possible. Keep the tax burden on the American people as small as possible, but at the same time, have government that is solving the problems of the people," he said.

He said Obama "has to start really taking a very, very hard look at what the cost of all this is. And, how much additional bureaucracy and will it be effective bureaucracy."

CNN released excerpts of the interview in advance of the broadcast.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Look at the issues the country faces today and tell us how these can be solved without a temporary increase in the size of government?

With the government there is no such thing as a "temporary increase in the size of government".

Hate to sound so cynical, but dam just can't help it.....this thread is a little lonely (since 10:23 AM today)...bet there are a lot of blank-blanks on ALL the other ones making MORE fun of Sarah Palin! Not going there because their comments would just prove how totally ignorant most of them sound and it would be a huge waste of time.........

BTW...Happy Birthday America!

Wait a minute, is this the same Colin Powell that switched and voted Dem over his own party? And now he not happy with how the Dems are doing things? Well, DUH. The Dems are tax and spend (well in this case, spend and then figure out how to tax), what did he expect? Gen. Powell, you helped this crap happen, you might want to keep your yap shut now about what he doing!

A lot of people have in my opinion have heaped scorn on Powell because he appeared to turn his back on McCain. Perhaps he truly believed that Obama was best for the U.S. He probably soured his chances of being a candidate for anything within the Republican Party. But to speak your mind despite the consequences is admirable. He cannot be accused of being the loony right wing especially since Cheney and Rush have disavowed in their many speeches. IMHO the Republicans could use more moderates in order to have a chance of winning anything come 2010 mid term elections. Even if he cannot run, he could attract more moderates to the Republican Party.

Hmmm, I am not sure about that thinking - that the R's need to be more moderate. McCain was a moderate and look what happened to him? I think the R's need to get back to their roots: cut spending, lower taxes, less gov't intervention, more personal responsibility demanded and less reliance on government entitlements which always expand, more focus on Constitutional law and less judical activism and legislation, tort reform...etc.

What happened to him was several factors. 1. He was seen as part of Bush lite and with an approval rating of 22pct anyone part of that picture was going to lose especially since voters vote with their wallets. 2. He pandered to the right by picking Palin, which for moderate Republicans was a bit scary. Obama was elected by a large percentage of independents and disenchanted Republicans which they seem to forget in their quest to implement their agenda. Perhaps the Democrats will misread their mandate worse than the Republicans are trying to go back to their "roots" whatever they think that is. McCain had lost many nomination battles, to Reagan, to Bush etc. He was unfortunately a second rate candidate who ran with almost no chance given the economic climate in Nov. Not really his fault, but the Republicans should not take that as not being "right" enough. Goldwater didnt do too well with that either.
