Former NFL quarterback McNair killed in Tennessee

NASHVILLE — Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair and a woman were found shot to death Saturday inside a residence in Nashville, police said.

Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron confirmed that authorities were called to a condominium and found McNair and a woman shot to death inside. Aaron said police don't yet know the circumstances of the shootings.

"I don't have any answers for you now as to what's happened, who's responsible," Aaron said.

Aaron said police tentatively have identified the woman but did not release her name.

"There are persons who were around the complex today, visitors, who have been taken to headquarters for questioning, just to see what they know, what they may have seen," Aaron said. "No one is in custody right now."

The condominium where the bodies were found is one that McNair was known to frequent, but police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford could not say whether he was the owner.

Detectives from the police department's centralized homicide unit were on the scene.

McNair played 13 seasons in the NFL and led the Titans within a yard of forcing overtime in the 2000 Super Bowl, which they lost 23-16 to the St. Louis Rams. He also played for the Baltimore Ravens before retiring in April 2008.

"We don't know the details, but it is a terrible tragedy and our hearts go out to the families involved," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

"We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing today," Titans owner Bud Adams said in a statement. "He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl."

About 50 people crowded just beyond police tape outside the complex in the upscale Rutledge Hill neighborhood, some wearing Titans hats. The condominium is located within walking distance of an area filled with restaurants and nightspots, just a few blocks from the Cumberland River and within view of the Titans' stadium.

McNair began his career in 1995 with the Houston Oilers, who eventually became the Titans, and finished with 31,304 yards passing and 174 touchdowns. McNair played with pain for several years, and the injuries ultimately forced him to retire.

The highlight of his playing time might have been a five-game stretch at the end of the 2002 season when he was so banged up he couldn't practice. McNair started all five games and won them all, leading the Titans to an 11-5 finish and a berth in the AFC championship game for the second time in four seasons.

McNair played all 16 games in 2006, his first season in Baltimore, and guided the Ravens to a 13-3 record. But he injured his groin during the season opener last season and never regained the form that enabled him to earn a berth in four Pro Bowls.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of today's tragic news regarding the death of Steve McNair. He was a player who I admired a great deal," said New England Patriots senior football adviser Floyd Reese, who was GM of the Titans when McNair played there. "He was a tremendous leader and an absolute warrior. He felt like it was his responsibility to lead by working hard every day, no matter what.

"I don't think there was a player who played with him or against him that didn't look up to him and respect him," Reese said. "My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, his friends and the many teammates who loved and admired him."

Titans coach Jeff Fisher was out of the country, taking part in the first NFL-USO coaches tour to Iraq.

Yet another day in 2009 where I find myself skimming headlines only to say aloud, "No freakin' way." You'd think I'd be desensitized to all the celebrity/athlete deaths by now, but McNair is yet another shocker.

It's too early to jump to any conclusions on this specific incident. At the moment Wikipedia is citing conflicting reports of murder-suicide versus double homicide.

Quick update: the Wikipedia entry for McNair is being revised every few minutes (literally), and they're removing any suggestions of a possible murder-suicide. It's already a tragedy, here's to hoping it doesn't degrade even further into a Benoit-style situation.

I have sympathy for Mr. McNair's children and his widow. However, how does the saying go? Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned? I say his wife had better have an alibi that's so air-tight, there's no way to connect her to this.

As for the young woman? Who was, by her own words to the cops, "not drunk, high" when she was arrested two days before the tragedy in McNair's car? Well, not much to say there. Seems she liked to live her life the way she liked a lot of things: fast, expensive and dangerous.

As for Mr. McNair--a wasted life.

I'm totally stunned and saddened at the death of Steve,

I met Steve back 1996 when I lived in Houston and he played for the Houston Oilers. For a couple of years he was a regular in my auto repair shop, then when the Oilers moved to Tennessee he would stop by when he was in Houston from time to time.

Steve was a great guy, very friendly down to earth person.

My thoughts and prayers go out his family.

RIP, my friend, we'll miss you.

the weekly arrest, shooting or murder of black pro athletes is just a mirror image of the decay and violence which has erupted in black urban culture.

How can you say he was a great guy when he was carrying on with a girl almost half his age? Cheating on his wife and family. The girl was driving drunk or high - and he allowed that to happen, putting others' lives in danger of her dangerous driving.

Sounds to me like it's just another celebrity life down the toilet. Once out of football, he had no goals and just wasted his life. He could have done useful for the community instead of just getting a girl toy to pass the time with. Just because the guy could play football and be nice to the car repair man and charm the fans does not mean he was a "great guy" with any character. People amaze me - they will overlook anything their sports heroes do. What would you be saying if this was your kid's teacher or coach in this same situation? You'd be vilifying them.

He did. McNair started his own foundation helping underprivileged kids, donated $30,000 to his hometown Boys & Girls Club, took part in Katrina relief, and provided some college scholarships to boys in his Annual football camps.

Yes, he was having an affair with this young girl who probably thought he would leave his wife for her. Sadly, now his family has to suffer at the hands of this woman, but he chose to have an affair with this woman who ended up killing him in the end. People who have affairs need to seriously question what they might be getting into, but it seems they will never learn. My heart goes out to the children who have lost their father.

This looks like an obvious case of murder-suicide. Here's why:

He was shot multiple times while sitting on the sofa. She had a single shot wound to the head. The weapon was still at the scene, not initially visible to detectives, which leads one to believe that her body either partially of fully covered the weapon when she fell. Also, if a third party were involved, most will take their gun with them rather than leaving it at the scene.

My suspicion leads me to believe that he was having an affair with this 20 yr old. He even had a vehicle registered in his and her name. She became angry when he refused to leave his wife for her (for financial reasons?) and in a Friday night mental haze of drugs and/or alcohol, they argued over their relationship and she literally lost it.

We'll see how this plays out in the coming days, but the detectives saying that they are not actively looking for a suspect tells me that what the crime scene investigators saw at the scene, and the evidence collected, lead them to believe this was a classic case of murder-suicide.

          Here's my hypothesis:

I suspect that the injuries to his body were from a distance (no powder burns near the entry points) but that the injury to her head had the tell-tell powder burn pattern found in injuries where the muzzle was either pressed directly against the skin or within a very short distance. This occurs because gunpowder will exit the muzzle along with the projectile and will burn off on the skin, leaving "speckled" gun powder burn marks. The closer the muzzle to the skin, the tighter the grouping of burn "specks". The further away, the wider the burn pattern. I suspect that the investigators probably saw this pattern (a burn ring) around her head wound.

Now some of you will say that a third party could have shot him first from a distance, moved in closer for a fatal head shot, then placed the gun close to her head while she stood traumatized and pulled the trigger, leaving this same burn pattern. However, I suspect that they swabbed her hands for trace gun powder residue and also ran a "trace metal swab test" on her hands to see if she recently held a gun. They will swab the web of the hand where this part touched directly below the slide or hammer, depending on whether a revolver or semi-automatic gun was the weapon. They will also swab the fingers to determine whether a finger had the trace metal pattern of a trigger on the skin. And I predict that these tests probably came back positive, proving that she not only held a gun but that she also pulled the trigger. Shooting a gun multiple times will leave plenty of gun powder on a hand that held a gun.

All these pieces of evidence together will be enough to determine that this was a classic case of murder-suicide. We'll see how accurate my theory is in the coming days.

Anyone feel like a betting man??? I could use some extra cash.

As a NFL fan, I was saddened to hear Steve was dead, but as a husband and family man, when you screw around these things happen. It seems strange that on Thursday Sahel was arrested for DUI, and on Saturday, they are dead. Murder- suicide does seem like the only scenario here. After all, witnesses said Sahel was already at the condo when Steve arrived. I know I will probably be accused of being a racist, but, monogamy is not a word in the African-American culture.
