Unemployment tops 10 percent in 15 states in June

WASHINGTON — Unemployment topped 10 percent in 15 states and the District of Columbia last month, according to federal data released Friday. The rate in Michigan surpassed 15 percent, the first time any state hit that mark since 1984.

The Federal Reserve this week projected that the national unemployment rate, currently at a 26-year high of 9.5 percent, will pass 10 percent by the end of the year. Most Fed policymakers said it could take "five or six years" for the economy and the labor market to get back on a path of long-term health. To get there, consumers must return to a regular spending groove and housing prices need to start rising again.

Home to the nation's struggling auto makers, Michigan has been clobbered by lost factory jobs. Its jobless rate of 15.2 percent in June was the highest in the country.

Still, the U.S. Labor Department said it's the first time in 25 years that any state has suffered an unemployment rate of at least 15 percent. In 1984, it was West Virginia.

The state unemployment report underscores the damage that the longest recession since World War II has inflicted on companies, workers and communities.

The other 14 states where unemployment topped 10 percent last month were: Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Tennessee.

In May, the jobless rate topped 10 percent in 13 states and the District of Columbia. Alabama and Georgia joined the list in June.

The states with the lowest unemployment rates in June were: North Dakota at 4.2 percent, Nebraska at 5 percent and South Dakota at 5.1 percent.

While Michigan's rate was the highest in the country in June, the record-high for the state was 16.9 percent in November 1982.

(This version CORRECTS that Kentucky among states with rate over 10 percent, not Louisiana.)

Obama bin Laden's change you can believe in is working. He sited California as an exemplary state in reflecting the affect of the bailout $$, and the "African blood" coursing in his veins is driving him to emulate it before the end of the year.

When will we get the real figures?

Spoke to someone yesterday that says his business fell 80% this year. Since I was calling him about a sale we were offering... it affects me. But my business is down 90%. Spoke to a property owner who said the Church that was renting space had to cut it in half because they could not afford it. The other half is sitting around at a bargain basement price and she has no takers. Another said that his business is down 50% in pre fab. A thriving law firm has laid off people steadily in the past year and cut pensions and benefits while laying employees off and cutting employees to 20 hours per week. He's only lost $190,000 from his business savings this year.

It's going on all over. The one thread that all have in common is that there is no attention given to their plights by the government. Small business is not part of the agenda. Small business employees are the majority of the American public. I wouldn't doubt that the Chamber of Commerce in every town is falling on hard times.

Voices must be heard in a loud shout!

The Unemployed should be yelling. The yet to be unemployed... (yes many of you are on the brink)... ought to be yelling.

The American public is being taken hostage. Maybe not in all areas quite yet, but you have to start in the weaker areas and move toward the Metropolitan.

As I watch our President reason as to why he is doing things this way I am captivated by his fantastic ability to diminish the importance of the point... tell us that is not what he is doing... and then turn around and do it. We get too captivated and disarmed by his approach. And that is why we are where we are today. We give him the benefit of the doubt against our better judgement.

Now, that is not to say that there are not those who completely agree with him. But anyone who has a traditional American value system cannot agree with the direction that he is taking us. And those are the people who must get heard.

The un-employment figures that are bandied about are false. They do not reflect what is really happening on the streets of Main Street America. And the real battle that is going on has more to do with ideology. His total thrust is to create a new shadow Constitution, while claiming to cling to the old.

The Stimulus has not kicked in. And where it has, companies are drowning in paperwork nightmares that put their shovel ready jobs on the back burner while they try and comply with standards. Meanwhile... another 600,000 people will be laid off(and businesses shut down) bringing the totals to well over 7 million in a very short period of time.

Yes, we got change. And now we have to hold on to make another change for 1-1/2 years! Polls show that those who have backed the Obama experience are falling by the wayside. They say that it may be that the honeymoon is over. They are correct... but the nightmare may just be in it's beginning stages.

We have to make sure that our representatives know where we stand. I never really did that until this year. If you like government growth... encourage them. If you.. like I... feel that government should stay out of the business of running car companies, Wall Street, banks, and Health Care... let them know that.

Get involved other than voicing opinions on the discussion vine.

So if the government says the people need to get back into a regular routine of spending and we need to get the housing market straightened out, why is Obama, the head of the government, doing so much to supress spending?

      Greg...

He wants to control the spending. I notice that he is pretty free-wheeling with the yet to be collected tax dollars. And the investments that he makes will probably not pan out to returns for us. While the lowly guy who borrowed too much is being chided because he did not count on the economy going to pot... the President and Congress are likewise doing the same thing... but with our future tax dollars. It's a roll of the dice instead of sound fiscal responsibility. It's like taking all of your credit cards and maxing them out to win in Las Vegas.

If it works, he will go down in history as the one who bailed us out. If it doesn't...we get the shaft and he gets his pension... and all of the heads turn the other way because of where he came from and the group of people he represents. He is in a no loss situation personally because he has broken the race barrier at the top. That is quite a feat in itself! But that should not mean that his policies should get a pass or that he should be judged any different than say...President Bush.

History will always be kind to President Obama because of the politics of race. I truly believe that lots of people voted for him because they wanted to set precedent and that President Bush and his administration set the thing in motion by blowing-up the economy.

If we take the race card out of the equation and stand on his the ultra liberal leanings ... Hillary Clinton is probably the one who breaks a barrier.

There are people of every race and gender that are qualified to be taken seriously in our political system. He just happens to be super left leaning and that is what we should have been taking notice of.

He's out to prove who is in control, and to change the dynamics of how things are controlled.

If it works he will be immortalized.... if it doesn't... he ends up on Mount Rushmore.

I know I touched a can of worms... but there it is. No one else wants to go there.

It is going to be way more than that. The weakness on his foreign policy hasn't hit us yet.

Saul Alinsky for President. Have to admit the public schools did their part in brainwashing our youth. And he is doing his part in destroying all the wealth following Saul's example.

He doesn't care if he gets a second term as long as he completes the mission of finally destroying the U.S. and it's evil capitalist system.

Approval rating on that I would give 110%

With due respect to you I will make one very small correction -- Saul Alinsky IS our president.
