AP sources: Taliban video shows captive US soldier

advertisement

WASHINGTON — The American soldier who went missing June 30 from his base in eastern Afghanistan and was later confirmed to have been captured, appeared on a video posted Saturday to a Web site by the Taliban.

Two U.S. defense officials confirmed to The Associated Press that the man in the video is the captured soldier. The video provide the first glimpse the public has had of the missing soldier.

The soldier is shown in the 28-minute video with his head shaved and the start of a beard. He is sitting and dressed in a nondescript, gray outfit. Early in the video one of his captors holds the soldier's dog tag up to the camera. His name and ID number are clearly visible. He is shown eating at one point and sitting cross-legged.

The soldier, whose identity has not yet been released by the Pentagon pending notification of members of Congress and the soldier's family, says his name, age and hometown on the video, which was released Saturday on a Web site pointed out by the Taliban.

The soldier said the date is July 14. He says he was captured when he lagged behind on a patrol.

He is interviewed in English by his captors, and he is asked his views on the war, which he calls extremely hard, his desire to learn more about Islam and the morale of American soldiers, which he said was low.

Asked how he was doing, the soldier said on the video:

"Well I'm scared, scared I won't be able to go home. It is very unnerving to be a prisoner."

He begins to answer questions in a matter-of-fact and sober voice, occasionally facing the camera, looking down and sometimes looking to the questioner on his left.

He later chokes up when discussing his family and his hope to marry his girlfriend.

"I have my girlfriend, who is hoping to marry," he said. "I have a very, very good family that I love back home in America. And I miss them every day when I'm gone. I miss them and I'm afraid that I might not ever see them again and that I'll never be able to tell them that I love them again and I'll never be able to hug them."

He is also prompted his interrogators to give a message to the American people.

"To my fellow Americans who have loved ones over here, who know what it's like to miss them, you have the power to make our government bring them home," he said. "Please, please bring us home so that we can be back where we belong and not over here, wasting our time and our lives and our precious life that we could be using back in our own country. Please bring us home. It is America and American people who have that power."

The video is not a continuous recording — it appears to stop and start during the questioning.

It is unclear from the video whether the July 14 date is authentic. The soldier says that he heard that a Chinook helicopter carrying 37 NATO troops had been shot down over Helmand. A helicopter was shot down in southern Afghanistan on July 14, but it was carrying civilians on a reported humanitarian mission for NATO forces. All six Ukrainian passengers died in the crash, and a child on the ground was killed.

On July 2, the U.S. military said an American soldier had disappeared after walking off his base in eastern Afghanistan with three Afghan counterparts and was believed to have been taken prisoner. A U.S. defense official said the soldier was noticed missing during a routine check of the unit on June 30 and was first listed as "duty status whereabouts unknown."

Details of such incidents are routinely held very tightly by the military as it works to retrieve a missing or captured soldier without giving away any information to captors.

But Afghan Police Gen. Nabi Mullakheil said the soldier went missing in eastern Paktika province near the border with Pakistan from an American base. The region is known to be Taliban-infested.

The most important insurgent group operating in that area is known as Haqqani network and is led by warlord Siraj Haqqani, whom the U.S. has accused of masterminding beheadings and suicide bombings including the July 2008 attack on the Indian Embassy in Kabul that killed some 60 people. The Haqqani group also was linked to an assassination attempt on Afghan president Hamid Karzai early last year.

On Saturday, a U.S. military official in Kabul, Col. Greg Julian, said the U.S. was "still doing everything we can to return him safely."

Julian said U.S. troops had distributed two flyers in the area where the soldier disappeared. One of them asked for information on the missing soldier and offered a $25,000 reward for his return. The other said "please return our soldier safely" or "we will hunt you," according to Julian.

Lets raise the reward to 5 million, send in a SEAL team, free this brave soldier and slit the throats of the bastards that are holding him.

The problem with paying ransoms for our soldiers is it could create a cottage industry of people kidnapping soldiers for pay. Its just like negotiating with terrorists, doing it might help once, but it legitimizes all of their efforts.

The reward is for information in finding the soldier, not a ransom...there is a 25 million dollar reward for Bin Laden's kill or capture...that's not a ransom.

What do you think the chances are that a group of Taliban can steadily capture American soldiers without getting shot in the face?

Ellen, although, I just posted a retort to someone's political statement......I agree with you.

When I saw the footage my heart sank and went out to him and his family. I just hope and pray that the family was advised of this footage beforehand and were not ambushed as is sometimes the norm with journalism these days.

My prayers and hope for a quick freedom go out. I hope his guardian angel has extended it's wings of protection and safety around him.

This is a prime example of the difficulty of expecting other countries to abide by the Geneva Convention when our government ignored it so deliberately.

I wish all countries would follow the Geneva Convention. But since the Taliban is not a "country"...would it even apply to them? They don't seem to care about following any "rules" as far as I can tell.

Why has this not been plastered all over the mainstream media? This is all we should be hearing about. Instead the media propagandist stay silent. It would go against their agenda to publicize this. The media makes a big deal about U.S. soldiers putting underwear on captured terrorist heads, and the liberals go ballistic. What the Taliban do to captured Americans is by far more hideous. This should not be tolerated by our country. Where is the outrage?

What is being done to this soldier is appalling. Maybe it is time for Obama and the boo whoers to stop apologizing for this country, and start standing up for our country and our soldiers.

And if you were in a war zone, which doesn't sound like you were, you weren't captured for then your face might have been the one on the same TV and you wouldn't be so arrogant about what this young man should or shouldn't be doing rather than praying for his release like the rest of us.

But as someone now retired who has been there and done that, where the Hell were his leaders when "The soldier said the date is July 14. He says he was captured when he lagged behind on a patrol."? Some years ago Marines were in an exercise in the Mojavi. One of the young Marines became lost and his unit FAILED to continue to search for him. He was founds days later dead. So what gives with our training? Does FORSCOM need this ole soldier to come back to teach them leadership?

If people want things like this to change, then they need to tell Congress to pull the media out of Iraq and Afghanistan. The media has NO BUSINESS at war, and without them there we can effectively do our jobs, and get the @!$%# over with.

The U.S. is in a really bad spot. I believe this soldier was "set up" by the other ANA that he was with. It is a classic damned if you do, damned if you don't because the Taliban find these ANA soldiers' families and trade information about our military for their safety. I wouldn't doubt that the ANA he was on patrol with turned him over. Some Afghans even give up info for cash. I wouldn't say they are greedy, they are just trying to get food on the table for their own children. We can't do this mission with them, but we also can't do it without them. There is a chance that the Taliban would take the cash. (25K) If they are smart, it buys them food and some weapons.

It's more than likely that there will be a killing sooner or later here.

The kidnappers are likely protecting this guy pretty closely, and that they know the entire American surveillance system is watching and listening.

Navy SEALs or DELTA teams will be used, surely, if the individual is snatched from these kidnappers. I'd guess they will blow themselves up if the building where they're at is hit. It would make sense to keep him on the move, but that increases their exposure to discovery. This is unfortunate. Whatever happens to this guy, believe that the manner and form will be a response to the torturing of al-Qaeda operatives, or Taliban soldiers. The way those folks have been treated will be the same way this guy is treated.

Armed forces men and women now have no immunity from horrible torture and abuse before they're killed, or allowed to die, as prisoners of war. The Geneva Convention was something that Americans could point to as something they adhered to, and something that was reliable and dependable if people wanted to treat prisoners right. We threw that out the window. There won't be much luck renegotiating the Geneva Convention any more. We blew it.

Total Bull $#*!...more left wing drivel, oh this is happening because we water boarded three terrorists, if you knew anything about the Geneva Convention (which you don't) you would know that the Taliban and Al-Qaeda are not signature's to the convention and even if they were, not covered by it...so stop excusing the action's of the terrorist scum that took this soldier by trying to blame it on us!!!

Why do you suppose he wondered off the base? My brother is there and they have strict orders about leaving the base. Of course he can't tell me anything, but it just sounds a bit odd. ABC and NBC have reported that other soldiers saw this soldier leaving with three Arab guys.......Something isn't right with that. There's more to this story that will be forthcoming. Certainly hope that the military hasn't become so complacent...that three of the Taliban walked onto the base and took the guy.....geeeeeeeez! I don't know something's not right with this story.

According to the story they were on patrol when he lagged behind and was captured.
