ATLANTA — Shares of major U.S. carriers were mixed Friday as oil prices advanced. The broader stock market also was up.
Benchmark crude for September delivery rose $2.51 to settle at $69.45 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices have swung wildly for days. In London, Brent prices rose $1.59 to settle at $71.70 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

In afternoon trading, shares of Delta Air Lines Inc. rose 7 cents to $6.93; American Airlines parent AMR Corp. rose 13 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $5.38; United Airlines parent UAL Corp. lost 1 cent at $4.12; Continental Airlines Inc. added 19 cents at $11.18; US Airways Group Inc. fell 9 cents, or 3 percent, to $2.95; Southwest Airlines Co. rose 14 cents to $7.87; JetBlue Airways Corp. fell 5 cents to $5.09; and AirTran Holdings Inc., parent of AirTran Airways, was 4 cents lower at $7.24.
