NEW YORK — A New York City woman who says she can't find a job is suing the college where she earned a bachelor's degree.

Trina Thompson filed a lawsuit last week against Monroe College in Bronx Supreme Court. The 27-year-old is seeking the $70,000 she spent on tuition.

Thompson says she's been unable to find gainful employment since she received her information technology degree in April.

She says the Bronx school's Office of Career Advancement hasn't provided her with the leads and career advice it promises.

Monroe College spokesman Gary Axelbank says Thompson's lawsuit is completely without merit.

The college insists it helps its graduates find jobs.

What an idiot. I hope she ends up working at Starbucks. She doesn't deserve a job, especially in the IT industry. The only thing a potential employer has to do is google her name and see the thousands of references to this story and they'll shred her resume. I hope the judge slaps her in the face before sending her packing.

It would be so funny if judges were able to slap people before sending them packing!

I don't normally agree, but I can see her point. These "higher education institutions" are b.s. They spend all their time conning students that they are going to get them a job, but in reality the only thing they want really is tuition.

HEY!!......... I work at starbucks lol

I also haven't finished colelge yet... so there's that.

But how about it's not the college's job to find you a job... you have the same degree as the rest of those guys... make yourself worth hiring more.

What a deadbeat. Doesn't she know there is a recession going on?

        Oh For F***'s Sake.

Hell I would sue for not getting a good education because she is not a bright one.

You can't just go to any college or university.

You have to go to one of the universities that is "esteemed" in your field of study.

This school like community colleges, online schools, and so many other universities across the country are not worth a penny.

Picking the wrong school, becasue its cheap, close to home. or thats all you can get into, is just throwing time and money away. Plus it hurts your chances of getting into a real school.

When all else fails, and by all else I mean half-assed trying to find something beyond what you think youre worth, sue the school. She probably didnt look far enough away, didnt send out enough resumes, expected a big job when she only got a bachelors degree, and expected it to just happen without trying.

            ROTFLMMFAO!!!!!!

I have worked in the IT industry for the last 25 years.

Things are NOT the same as they used to be. The recession of 01 took a lot of the IT jobs out of this country.

I'm willing to bet that this woman has her expectations way up there. Well the reality is that the IT industry is NOT what it used to be. She is going to have to take a lower level job that what she is looking for and get some experience to go with that degree if she hopes to go anywhere in the IT field.

Just what an employer is looking for- someone who expects every one else to do everything for them.

Hey...I just experienced the same raw deal from the college of my choice. This woman should certainly sue. Colleges are deceiving students by not giving them the truth about the job market and how saturated many of the technical fields are. With the economy the way it is, it is extremely difficult to find work right out of college. Another factor is that many people that were ready to retire are now staying in the work force, either because they lost retirement money in the plumetting stock market or because they are terrified to retire for fear of becoming impoverished.

When I enrolled in the Radiologic Technology program in 8 of 2006, the college I attended promised me job placement help and unlimited opportunities for employment in that field. What they failed to mention was that there are new medical and health care tech schools opening up all over the place and spitting out 30 techs per semester. When I graduated in 7 of 08 I spent 3, 4 and 5 hours every morning, searching for and applying for jobs all over the world without finding work. After six months of going it alone, I called the collage and asked for help. I got one phone call back from the placement office telling me they had no leads of openings at this time.

One month short of one year after graduating, I found a stat (per-diem), no medical insurance, not even part time job and moved from Minnesota to Arizona with 11 days of being offered the job. I sacrificed everything I owned and moved away from my family for this one job.

I am grateful for the job but my college left me high and dry and are still telling perspective students that the job market is wide open. There is another school opening for Rad Techs in the city that I now work. All the techs I'm working with agree with me that it isn't a good idea at this time. The colleges don't care if the grad is getting a job when there done, they are all panicking and doing what ever it takes to get new students.

Not one drop of integrity in that. I hope she wins!

If one is supposedly smart enough to get into higher education they would be smart enough to actually read a paper, watch the news, anything to know what the economy is like.

Suing the school because she didn't get a job right off the bat? Please. I never attended any bloody school where they were promising a job after graduation.

Yeah see YOU found such and such. This chick didn't even go look herself it sounds like. She expected the instant hand out without any leg work on her part.

What these universities ideally should be doing is getting people into the professions that they want to be. Instead, they are basically "headhunters" wanting to fill jobs. They promise things to students that aren't deliverable. They don't train the students for the "real world". Instead, it is a lot of "liberal" poppycock about "political correctness". Real scholarship, real training, and real education has fallen by the wayside.

Folks who depend upon others to find them employment(placement offices) are bound to be disappointed.

In today's economy it is hard to find that perfect fit as far as a job goes.

For the lady that the article is about, I wonder if she has considered relocating? It seems doubtful as it has come out that her mother and her are sharing an apartment.

You have to be willing to relocate using your OWN money now a days. The "gravy days" where employer's would pay your relocation are long gone.

Sometimes you just have to settle for what you can get and keep looking for that perfect fit.

As myself and everyone else in the IT industry that I know put it, "Disaster recovery planning is a resume in an off-site location".

the market is flooded with IT people, has been for years, and right now its a recession, so there are even less openings. should have gone to school for a field that wasn't already saturated with qualified people. It's not the schools job to decide what you should take, it's their job to educate you in the field that YOU choose. Hell all you people with B.A.'s or degrees in history should file a class action.
