WASHINGTON — You say it's your birthday.

It's my birthday, too.

And so it went at the White House on Tuesday.

On the day he turned 48, President Barack Obama decided to splash a little celebration on someone with whom he shares the birthday: legendary White House correspondent Helen Thomas, now a columnist with Hearst Newspapers. She turned 89 on Tuesday.

Obama emerged unannounced in the White House briefing room where Thomas sat in the front-row seat reserved in her name. He led the roomful of reporters in singing "Happy Birthday to You," gave a plate full of cupcakes to Thomas, watched her blow out one lit candle and sat down next to her to share a smiling photo.

The president said Thomas wished for peace and no prejudice in the world and — working in a plug for his agenda — a health care reform bill.

And then he left without taking questions about his own birthday plans or anything else.

Obama had just spent lunch with almost the entire Democratic Senate caucus. Leaders emerged promising to deliver the health care bill Obama wants.

"We're ready to take on the world," Sen. Harry Reid said, offering a glowing assessment of Obama's pep talk.

The president was born in 1961 in Hawaii, a fact state officials have confirmed again and again to address claims of so-called "birthers" who say the president was actually born outside the United States. The Constitution says that a person must be a "natural-born citizen" to be eligible for the presidency.

The White House said Obama did much of his birthday celebrating over the weekend, hanging with friends and family at Camp David.

But that didn't stop some schoolkids on a tour of the White House from trying to get Obama's attention on the actual birthday itself.

From the steps of the North Portico, they broke out in their own version of "Happy Birthday to You" for the president, and were heard all the way to Pennsylvania Avenue.

OOHHH, that's a brave man, even on his birthday, getting that close to Helen Thomas.

I have one question for Ms. Thomas: How did she get that close to the no-fly zone around the White House on her broom?

I love Helen Thomas. One of the last honest and real reporters around. It will be a sad day when she is gone.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU HELEN AND TO YOU MR. PRESIDENT.

Helen Thomas has been covering the White House since FDR. It was she who called FDR " A Dictator ". I'm waiting for her to tell Obama " I knew FDR, and kept a close eye on that SOB. You are no FDR - you're even worse ".

Yes indeed, Happy Birthday to the President and Helen Thomas. And an extra "thank you" to Helen for not showing up in her birthday suit.

I wonder if she gave him a BJ. And before you get mad, that means birthday joke. Most of those in the white house press room have been giving him BJs even before it was his birthday. I enjoy how every waking moment when Bush was president, these same press folk questioned, attacked and challenged everything he did. Now they giggle like school girls, promote his agenda and longingly stare at him while he gives his infomercials to sell his latest snake oil. Let's stop with the presidential BJs and get back to journalistic integrity.

Bert: Just curious as to which right-wing commentator you stole the BJ=birthday joke bit from. Limbaugh? Hannity? Beck? At least give credit to original sources when you rip off their stupid jokes and try to pass them off as your own.

It's not a bit. I wanted to type faster so I abbreviated birthday joke. When I explained the abbreviation in my original post, I should have went into more detail, I apologize.

wouldn't it have been faster to just type the 13 letters 'birthday joke' instead of the 100+ you used to explain your abbreviation ?

Bert: The MSM are a pathetic bunch. indeed. There is little doubt that many would like to do the dirty with him.. I half expected Barbara WaWa to drop to her knees on national TV and do the Lewinski. They are whores, and I suspect that Obama thinks of his followers as " His B****** ".

I think that I should change my Newsvine "handle" to SDP, for Supremely Disrespectful Peasant. Our ranks appear to be growing.

To be honest Sgt, I was unaware people still pretended the media at the white house isn't outrageously biased to obama, so I didn't think I would have gotten any poor responses. It was more of rhetoric statement, if you will. However, apparently there are many sheep that still think the media covers the president with any integrity. I won't make that assumptive mistake again.

Another classy, unconventional gesture by the President. I'll tell ya, the man keeps me guessing, and for better or worse I like it. I saw the video here:

          http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/04/obama-sings-happy-birthda_0_n_251088.html

... and my only complaint: it was strange how the reporters were howling and shouting like a bunch of frat boys, especially as the President was trying to share some words with Helen Thomas. Strange.

          Anyway, Happy Birthday Mr. President!!

Oh what a difference a President makes. When W was top dog didn't he move Helen Thomas to the back row of the briefing room?

I bet it was because to many of her questions had words with more then three syllables in them. Just another example of the spectrum of no-class to class.

Oh yeah and before you call me a lilly liver democrat realize I have voted republic for over 90% of all ballot selections I have ever cast. Until Dick Chumly and Mr. W oopy made a sham out of republican ability to take the high road.

It still says Republican on my voters registration and I still believe in many republican ideas, but the party has somehow turned from the jet set to the geriatric set, having lost all touch with the majority of youths in America.

I am sure Dick would have wanted to create the Brown Shirts while he was still VP, but was too busy dismantling our constitution to get around to it.

Happy B Day Mr President and Ms. Thomas, you got class sir, and I am sure you made Ms. Thomas day.

Kudos, Sir. I have respect for anyone who is committed to a set of beliefs without blindly supporting politicians who supposedly represent those beliefs. I also find merit in some of the Republican ideology, but as you suggested, there was a serious "dismantling" over the last few years and it's a shame.

At least with Obama I sense there is the possibility of a two-way conversation. I didn't get that sense at all with Dick and W in office.

Kudos to you Sir! It is such a welcome interaction to hear that someone agrees and not put the love of a political party above reality. It should speak volumes that some people can't enjoy the good deeds done just because their party affiliation doesn't agree with current leadership. I wonder if our troops on the ground around the world fighting to keep our freedom bicker with their fellow troops about party affiliation, I wonder if that has any precedence on who they prefer watch their back.

              Obama=/=messiah.

I know you don't like Obama, but don't be hypocritical (I.E saying Obama supporters worship him and call him a messiah when in reality the opposition are the only ones calling him a messiah)

Actually, Evan Thomas of Newsweek said it in an MSNBC interview. There are many instances besides that one of people referring to him as a messiah, like when Farrakhan said it as well. So now that we have established what you said is totally false, try reevaluating your belief structure as I'm sure that too, is based on falsehoods.

Yeah, Evan Thomas and Farrakhan=majority of America. Mhm.

And when I googled, the only ones I saw with "Obama is the messiah" are things such as Farrakhan in the video (taken down due to violations), Thomas, WorldNutDaily, and a few other conesrvative sites.

You were wrong, and got caught in your own BS. Don't get bitter. Accept your shortcomings. Embrace them.

We are not celebrating the birthday of the tainted anti-messiah self made God of the republican party. I thought Limbaugh was tossed from a swirling tornado originating from the deep dark pit of hell; therefore he had to drum up a fake birth certificate forged by the Oxycontin company since he endorsed their brand of drugs. Come on, now....keep up! It is President Obama's birthday today. He is not the messiah. He is a man, quite an extraordinary man at that.

Happy Birthday, President Barack H. Obama and Helen Thomas. I salute these two distinguish people.

Happy Birthday Mrs. Thomas! What a blessing to live as long as you have and been witness to some of the most famous leaders of the free world. Please pass on as much history and knowledge to some of those young whipper snappers in the press room as you can, the world would be a much better place if we emphasized more importance on our elderly citizens.

Happy Birthday Mr. President! May you have many more and try to enjoy those beautiful girls of yours and this time with them every chance you get! Know that while we may not be able to agree on every problem and the way to solve it, I still applaud your efforts!
