TORONTO — Canada's main stock exchange closed above 11,000 points for the first time in 10 months.
The Toronto stock exchange soared 230.95 points or 2.14 percent to 11,018.10 on Tuesday, surpassing the 11,000 mark in the final moments of trading for the first time since Oct. 1, 2008.
The Toronto index was playing catch-up with New York markets, which rose sharply higher Monday while the TSX was closed for a holiday weekend.
The higher stock markets come amid growing investor optimism that an economic recovery is under way, driving demand for a wide range of products in the commodity-rich exchange.
The TSX is up 33 percent since the March low of 7,479.96.
