Burger King: No shoes rule taken too far with baby

— Like most restaurants, the Burger King in this St. Louis suburb has a no shoes, no shirt, no service policy. And baby, do they enforce it. Too much so, the company admitted, after apologizing for restaurant workers who asked a mother to leave because her 6-month-old wasn't wearing shoes.

Jennifer Frederich, her mother and Frederich's infant daughter, Kaylin, stopped at the Burger King in Sunset Hills on Sunday. The baby was shoeless — Frederich figured tiny baby feet were immune from the rule.

But workers told the family to leave because the shoeless baby was violating a health code. In fact, shoelessness is not a health code violation in St. Louis County.

Frederich told KTVI-TV that she and her mother ate hurriedly and left before they could be kicked out. Frederich did not have a listed phone number, and The Associated Press could not reach her for comment.

Burger King released a statement Thursday indicating workers had taken the no shoes, no service policy too far.

"Our franchisee, which independently owns and operates this restaurant, apologizes for this guest's experience," the statement read. "The franchisee is retraining his restaurant team on the proper use of the 'no shoes' policy."

The franchise owner also contacted Frederich to apologize in person.

Frederich told the TV station the flap was a bit overblown, and she hoped no one would be fired. But she appreciated Burger King's apology.

Burger King, based in Miami, is the nation's second-largest hamburger chain, with 11,800 restaurants worldwide.

Did Burger-Kings no shoes rule go to far with baby? You bet it did! It's a baby for crying out loud! The owners should be very embarrassed by this! Maybe Burger-King should give this family free meals for the rest of their lives!

Well looks to me like it is not the Burger King it self but the Manager that needs to be retrained...  Maybe a personality adjustment to boot!  Baby germs?? What is that? He might want to put that germ concern into the kitchen and bathrooms....lol

Anyway I just think he is the problem not Burger King its self...Time for a new Manager I guess....

Chit happens and hes gonna be in that poop er scooper as soon as this fades away and they review the hit they take in the cash registers nation wide. A perfect example of non leadership skills. lacking in common sense. when the mom put on sock's to satisfy his power hungry ego demands. hes going to call the police. Like police aren't busy enough eh.

    Sigh

The great thing about this occurence is that...amazingly the comments interestingly metriculated from ignorant one liner mumbo jumbo to actual Legal Environmental Business practices and laws and someone who doesnt understand or is familiar with franchises or corporate resposibility including the interaction between the two...just may come away learning something. This is a perfect subject for situational business discussion...and a good question would be...Where does the public relation responsibility rest? Further discussion can insure that the chances of something such as this occuring again would be unlikely.

So you choose to never go to BK again. That is your right. It is your right to base your life's excursions on a single, low level event. Why are you still in this country since someone murdered someone in this country recently? How about never seeing a doctor (malpractice has occured in doctor's offices recently)? Please, get a grip and ACT like an adult. There IS a reason why they put "OOPS" in the dictionary after all!!!

Articles like this serve to remind me that relocating to Portland Oregon from hometown St. Louis was a very wise idea! Not only are Oregonians; especially Portlanders; conscientious about cherishing the environment; but Burger Kings and other burger chain joints are not landmarks on every street corner as they are in St. Louie ! While I realize that stupidity is not indigenous to any one region of our country; it does appear that midwest Missouri has more than its fair share of "hoosiers". When my two grandbabies arrive this fall you can bet I won't be leaving a Burger King voluntarily; if my daughter and daughter in law tote their shoeless tots in to be served!! They will be forced to summon the authorities to assist in escorting me out!!! That scenario however will not make the news; for Never will I patronize a Burger King again in this lifetime!!

This is what happens with fast food joints, they pay horrible wages and therefore get the lowest IQ'd employess.

I am a software engineer in my fifties who has also designed parts for a number of missile guidance systems. I have a number of recommendations in my portfolio. Due to the current economic downturn, and the apparent disincentive to hire someone in their fifties or older, I have been forced to seek employment in such venues. I am gravely insulted by this obviously uneducated (low IQ?) entry. True, the action of the individual was rather odd and lacking in understanding, but please do not paint all employees of such places with the same uneducated brush.

lets play what if? What if the people with the baby had an offensive smell? what if they were loud and obnoxious? Sometimes there are extinuating circumstances that managers are put in and all you can do to deal with the situation is to find something by the book to use to get them the hell out of your store..the mgr lacked creativity i admit...but, we were not there and I will bet six bits to a bucket of piss that the customers that were there were glad that the mgr kicked them out...just playing devils advocate.

Sooo, an employee of a establishment follows the rules given to them by the letter, and its a bad thing? Man, I wish countless workers of jobs did just that - what they are supposed to do.

Maybe enforced it a little overbearingly, but the sign is no shoes, no service. Not no shoes on those over 1 yr old, no service. Maybe just needs a little help with tact is all.

Of course, everyone knows the only way to combat a "No shirt, no shoes, no service" policy is to simply take off ones pants.

I agree with ArmyBorn. Smarten up. 7 Months is not generally a walking age. That child's feet (which are in no way going to contact a food service surface) are probably more clean than the hands of the cook with the runny nose is some places. Oh... and god forbid someone (such as yourself) sneeze back in the supposedly pristine cooking/prep/serving area. Sorry, but having a reality day.

No reason to get personal, "wise" woman. Hillbillies that allow their babies to go unclothed are probably allowing them to go unsupervised, as well. I've seen plenty of unattended, dirty, toddlers crawling around in public places. I'm just saying, when you take your children out in public, you should probably make sure they aren't being exposed to unnecessary filth. I do think that it was an overreaction to kick them out for this reason, but it doesn't change the fact that the baby should have been properly clothed in the first place.

Clearly, you are missing the point. This is not a discussion about toddlers crawling around on dirty public floors. Re-read the article, stay on point...this is little more than an infant...being 'clothed properly" is not the issue here!

I think you're overreaching, Groovychikk. It's summertime; hillbilly or not, it's proper attire for a 7 month old to wear something like a onesie with no shoes. Plus sunscreen, of course. Besides, how do you know the family in question are "hillbillies"? She could be a nurse from Hawaii, and her husband could be a classical violinist from Canada for all you know. A small baby not wearing shoes is proper attire. When you have kids (I know you don't currently) you'll understand. Until then, please try to take facts as they are, and go off on a tangent about poverty stricken people who can't afford clothes for their "damn babies".

Groovychikk, You obviously didn't see the television news yesterday. The beautiful little baby is only 6 months old, doesn't crawl, and doesn't even own shoes, yet. Her mother never put her down on the floor, she held her while they hurried up and ate, before the manager threatened to call the Police to evict them. And, she put socks on her baby to cover her feet. Babies don't need shoes till they walk, which this baby will probably do in another 6 months. The "no-shoes" rule is to avoid mishaps from stepping on something slippery or sharp. Bare feet have no more germs on them than shoes. probably less, because we would be more careful where we step without shoes.

Apparently nobody else has thought of this...ASIDE from the fact the baby can't walk, the baby was NOT the one being "serviced". WHAT 6 month old can even eat a damn burger and fries? And if there's a parent out there ignorant enough to stuff BK into a baby she should be removed not only from the restaurant, but from custody of that child too.

When you lack common sense, you arbitrarily enforce rules. Someone goofed when they hired this manager.

                                                      1. the mother and grandmother were eating not the baby

                                                      2. I have a 10 month old baby, and at that age I don't buy shoes since she will outgrow them too fast, and it interfers with proper development, ask the doctor, and I have never been evicted from a store or restaurant, someone just too the rule too far. I have never heard of a baby being evicted from a place of business for having bare feet. And the mother did put socks on the baby which is proper attire for a baby that age.

I never write to voice my opion on articles as these, yet even to read them. The manager, was wrong and was concerned about his job, probably. All or most of life is common "cents". The wage is not the issue or the president (dip head), I have better things to do, also, I have a sucessful life. This manager probably never read yours reviews or comments, HE IS WORKING. What circus do all of you clowns work for? and if you did, probably the "shovel crew". Let the guy get back to work. He may have made a mistake, so he slipped, but not carrying a shovel in a circus. Give it a break, get a life.
