Scoop: Jackson propofol use may date to ’05

— Michael Jackson’s propofol abuse could have started as early as 2005, according to sources with longstanding relationships with the singer.

“He went to Dubai in 2005 and when he was there, people around him started to grow concerned. He was acting bizarre, and everyone knew he was using,” said one business associate. “Finally he was confronted and all he’d say was ‘It’s stronger than Demerol, it’s something you can only get at the hospital.’ Now, looking back, it sounds like it could have been propofol.”

“He described it to me as ‘something to sleep that completely puts you out, that you get in hospitals,’ ” said another source who was in talks to start a new tour with Jackson during the Dubai trip, which followed the singer's acquittal on child molestation charges.

“His behavior was strange enough that it was good reason to not continue talks of a tour, at least until he got help,” the source said. “He was an addict. He admitted so himself on television. But now that we know about the propofol, there’s a lot of us thinking that was why he was so weird in Dubai — maybe it was propofol.”

That same source was involved in Jackson’s “This is it” tour and says that the behavior Jackson exhibited at the beginning of rehearsals did not indicate drug abuse of any kind. “He was totally present, totally dedicated to the tour. There was no way he was on anything, at least until the month before he died,” said the source. “The last month, he definitely changed.”

When Jackson asked his nurse Cherilyn Lee for the drug days before his death, Lee said that it was clear Jackson had been given the drug before. “He definitely had had it. He knew exactly what it would do, how it was administered,” Lee said. “But he wouldn’t tell me who gave it to him.”

Jermaine cashes in
Michael Jackson has plenty of siblings who depended on him financially, but it’s brother Jermaine who seems to be doing the most to profit from him after his death.

Not only has Jermaine struck a deal to release a recording of “Smile,” the song he performed at Michael Jackson’s July 7 public memorial, but now there’s a series of tribute concerts he’s planning. Jermaine made the announcement during a taped interview with Larry King, which airs Aug. 7, according to multiple sources who had access to the interview.

What’s interesting about the announcement is right up until the interview, Jermaine was making calls to artists who were involved with the “This Is It Tour,” telling them the tribute concerts would be part of the World Music Awards. Not only is this not true, but the World Music Awards turned down a Jackson family appearance at the show, which will be taped in late October in Monaco, according to a person with direct knowledge of the Jacksons’ proposal.

“Two different people, each claiming to be representatives of the entire family called to ask if there was interest,” said the source. “Let’s say there was interest: First of all, no one represents the entire family, so that wasn’t right. Then, you can’t get past the issue of their travel needs. They said the entire family would have to travel from California to Monaco via chartered jet. And that’s just not going to happen.”

What will take place at the World Music Awards? Janet Jackson (who, it should be noted, is not to be lumped into Jermaine’s category — she’s been an example of pitch-perfect respect toward Michael and the situation as a whole) will not perform, but organizers expect she will accept an award on behalf of Michael, who was due to receive the award prior to his death. Also, Prince is in talks to do a tribute performance to Michael Jackson.

Brown has friends in music, but not advertising
All things considered, Chris Brown’s image hasn’t taken too terrible a turn since pleading guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend Rihanna. His record sales dipped somewhat, but thanks to the spotlight being turned away from him by bigger events (Jackson’s death, for example) and a dancing wedding party’s song selection, it appears he’ll come out on the other side with his image mostly intact. That doesn’t mean his bank account won’t suffer, though.

Brown has friends like Diddy telling people he’s really sorry, and is learning from the experience, but outside the record studios and inside the boardrooms, it’s a different story. Brown lost his Wrigley’s deal this week, and future appearances (and appearance fees) at big events are in jeopardy because the advertisers behind the events don’t want to be associated with Brown.

“It’s a situation where the advertiser isn’t paying Chris, but is instead a show sponsor. They hear Chris might appear and perform, and the color drains from their faces. Having Chris be a part of a larger event, they’re afraid, looks like you’re supporting Chris,” said one person who’s been working on the corporate side of deals involving Brown.

And there’s the Britney Spears factor: “A lot of people got burned by Britney and all the fallout from her meltdown. Now there’s Chris as a reminder that you have to be really careful about where you put your money,” said the source.

Patricia Arquette’s TV career is for the poor, crippled
Part of the Television Critics Association dog-and-pony show included a chat with “Medium” star, Patricia Arquette. Msnbc.com contributor and RealityBlurred.com scribe Andy Dehnart was there, and tells us that among the questions lobbed to Arquette, was one commonly posed to actors who’ve been in the business for some time: What’s the difference between doing film and TV? While her answer did little to address that difference, it took a rambling turn toward the benefits of network television, which include being available to the poor and crippled.

Since it defies explanation, I’ll stop attempting to do so, and let the statement speak for itself: “I thought I want to do entertainment that’s network because it’s basically free, and people were at home or who are poor or who are crippled can get entertained in their house without having to go to a movie theater and pay a bunch of money, and I like that idea.”

There are no words.

What's Wrong With Hazlett's Column Today:

1. Jermaine. Hey, not bad Hazlett. It appears you ripped this from the MTV website - maybe not, I don't know. But they posted this at 12:34 p.m. EDT, your post is dated nine hours later after 9:00 p.m. EDT. But the headline is a bit deceiving - one could assume (from the headline) that Jermaine was engaged in some ghoulish deal in order to cash-in on MJ's death. To be precise, I think it's better to say he's cashing in on his funeral. But whatever. It's not Jon & Kate- thank you.

2. Woman-beating man. OK - I read this word by word - twice - to see if I cared. I don't. Why do you? His back account is down? BFD. Corporate sponsors fleeing from a man convicted of felony assault of a woman? Oh gee, I'm really surprised, which is why you posted this? You thought we'd be surprised by this? Or do you think we're all a bunch of dumb asses? I'm betting it's the latter.

3. Arquette. Is this post a dig at Arquette (and by extension Medium's production company and CBS) because of the show's unceremonious departure from NBC? Despite months of speculation over whether the show would come back for the 2009/2010 season, you and NBC remained silent. Indeed, in the final spots for Medium this spring on NBC, they averred that Medium was history when in fact it was simply moving to CBS. Indeed, I asked that question numerous times in this space - you were numb, eh, ah mum on the subject. But now that its fall premiere approaches on CBS, you take a swipe at Arquette and Medium? A low blow, Hazlett. You're right - there are no words.

It seems like you're still cutting and pasting from other websites to fill your "column" - you just don't bother to mention which websites you're cutting and pasting from. That's not fair. I should not have to do research to find out who you're ripping your posts from when you get paid to do so, and I do not. Now, time for your grade today - hmmm, let's see. Do I give you a good grade? Nah. I can't. I WANT to - but your posts aren't good enough to warrant one. Do I give you a failing grade? You know the deal, Hazlett - even though Brown was in your column today, no Jon & Kate so no failing grade. But you're really walking a line here Hazlett. So I give you a "D" for the column. OK - I know you'll be celebrating my grade over the weekend. See you Monday, OK??? Kiss Kiss!

BRING ME THE HEAD OF JIMMY FALLON FOR LOSING THE RATINGS WARS TO CRAIG FERGUSON
(I love CF - his show is SO much better than Fallon).

I could EAT pen and paper and PUKE a better column.

Randy, keep up the good work. We have to keep pounding Hazlett because there are too many talented (and hard working when they had a job) people not working right now. Hazlett is getting paid to deliver this crap that can be glomed from somewhere else without having to do one bit of work. She should be fired and ashamed - I think both are curcumvented by her doing smebody at MSNBC. Which seems kinda funny to me because if she can't come up with anything original what do you think she delivers "on the side"? Why can't I rate this crap a 0?

Jermaine Jackson, can you stop being so needy. You should go outside to be your own person. Stop cashing in on your younger brother. Michael worked so hard to support you and the rest of the family. You're the older brother, you should bave taking care of him.

Proud of Janet the way she has been acting. Never believed she was one of the blood suckers in the group! You go girl! Michael IS proud!

I could care less about Jermaine Jackson's ego and the woman-beating Chris Brown but you have gone over the top with your snide criticism of Patricia Arquette. If you don't understand that she was commenting on being happy to deliver a quality TV show for those who can't afford to go out and pay for entertainment then you are quite right - there are no words - for you!

I dont watch Medium or much of anything that Patricia Arquette is in. However your attitude about her comment was just stupid. Patricia may not be the best at speaking with out a script but even anyone who has half a brain would clearly understand what she was trying to articulate. You can always tell how mean spirited someone is when they have to pick on the stupidest things.

I agree with this post completely. I also don't watch "Medium" but I don't understand how someone like this Courtney person can take that quote and choose to see something wrong with it. There are many people who probably don't have the luxury or the health/energy to go out and see a movie, etc. To say that you're trying to provide free entertainment that's accessible to everyone is noble - even if she didn't say it in the most articulate way. I think Courtney is completely out of touch.

The whole thing is sick, sick, sick. The icing is that Courtney Hazlett and her media ilk are profiting from the sickness while pretending to be "reporters". Michael Jackson (rest his soul) was sick. The Jackson family is REALLY twisted, but the media leeches are the worst. They hounded Michael Jackson and his dysfunctional (though talented) family for decades and now they want to continue the feeding frenzy even in his death. And the superior and mocking demeanor of Hazlett and her many cohorts, as if she were above it and not "of it", is the most twisted aspect of all. They hastened the death of this sick man and then sit back and "report" every sordid detail (especially the unfounded rumours) except the one about their own complicity. No doubt they are proud of themselves. They call home and tell their family and friends to watch them on the TV. And they will sleep well tonight, perhaps running over in their minds who they will exploit tomorrow.

You ever notice how mean spirited some of these headlines are on msnbc? This one, and then "Abdul rejects show that kept her relevant". What a wonderful sentiment. Yesterday it was "Obama's Baby Boom's a Bust" - like that's some fault of his that a media creation didn't live up to THEIR expectations. These people are a$$holes.

Michael Jackson...a misunderstood genius in his own right. Just because he may have done one or two things wrong that made headlines, doesn't mean that his whole life should be smeared, and that's what a couple of "people" have done. But the story of Michael can really eclipse some little ol' story about a guy in Afghanistan serving in the military.

Who's death is more significant or a greater loss? Well, there's a lot more that can be told about the life and death of Michael than one marine, for example.

Hey Kurt, why don't you take your fag ass to a Marine base and read your fairy letter. Then you'll find out about significant loss, hopefully you'll leave without your balls but I got a hunch you don't have any now. MJ had no friends, just fans, and that's why he's dead. Hope you join him really soon.

Jermaine Jackson has done more than anyone else to raise up and support his brother's legacy.

It's pathetic that he is being criticized for doing so. A legitimate news organization should

be able to find something relevant to write about rather than tearing down someone who

is trying to do some good in the world. I'm sick of the media vultures.

" ... rather than tearing down someone who is trying to do some good in the world."

What notable contributions to society has Jermaine Jackson offered during his lifetime other than being yet another dysfunctional and immoral member of the notorious Jackson family?

As with ALL things Jacksons, we'll have to wait for final outcome here, too. Rumors like this (it's not confirmed yet) are always, always, greatly exaggerated. And if anyone in the family were to make a memerial-recording of Michael's music, it has to be Jermaine, whose vocal talents amongst family were matched only by Michael's.

I refuse to believe that he is exploiting this tragedy. I think when the facts come out, we'll see that whatever Jermaine is doing is to honor his little brother. He has always been very consistent in his support to Michael.

        Regards

While it at first seemed that Jermaine was indeed overwhelmed at / by Michaels death ( from all of the Jackson family, I thought he was the one that perhaps had the most respect for his brothers legacy; unlike the sister La Toya who was so quickly trying to make a buck by going to london, and making big bucks telling some story to a trash tabloid ). It simpy DISGUSTED me that old man Joe Jackson was ' attempting to promote some new record label....take Michaels kids ' on tour ', and Michael not even cold in his grave. Sure, the family misses Michael, BUT, you can't tell me that most everyone of them are seeing MORE dollar signs before their eyes now in their attempts to ' make a buck off of michaels having been here on this earth '.

The title of this article is grossly unprofessional.

The article makes a huge assumption about what Jermaine Jackson's motives are for wanting to release of some of Michael's recent work. It could just as easily be to honor his brother. Instead the article assumes the absolute wrost and then states a theory as if it were a fact.

This article says far more about the person who wrote it than it does about Jermaine Jackson.

Ms. Hazlett, what exactly is your problem with Patricia Arquette's comments about TV being free to the poor and the crippled? I have MS and am home bound It is a big deal to leave the house and with the economy in the tank, to go to the movies, I'd have to take out a loan to buy a ticket. The last thing those of us in this position need is a person like you with a National column making fun of someone who understands our situation. Not only do you owe an apology to Patricia Arquette, you owe one to the poor and the crippled. We won't be holding our breath because I have a feeling you've run out of words. Oh, I know "crippled" isn't PC, but then neither were your comments.
