Up to $3,800 fine for failure get health insurance

WASHINGTON — A top senator is calling for fines of up to $3,800 on families who fail to get medical insurance after a health care overhaul goes into effect.

The plan from Democratic Sen. Max Baucus of Montana would make health insurance mandatory, just like auto coverage. It would provide tax credits to help cover the cost for people making up to three times the federal poverty level. That's about $66,000 for a family of four, and $32,000 for an individual.

But those who still don't sign up would face hefty fines, starting at $750 a year for individuals and $1,500 for families. The maximum penalty on individuals would be $950.

Baucus is hoping his plan can win bipartisan support. A copy of his proposal was obtained by The Associated Press.

"You can keep the plan you already have." - Obama

But you better get a plan or we'll just fine the crap out of you. Nice. Wonder if the fine is waived if you support the public option?

I think the whole healthcare reform crap is exactly that, CRAP. I do not understand why, if healthcare is a right, they are going to fine me if I fail to get insurance. I would much prefer them to fine everyone who fails to excercise their 2nd amendment rights, or fine THEMSELVES for VIOLATING ALL OF MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS. This is just another scheme to steal money from those who work to support those who do not. Of course, they will never admit it, but it is a handy way to bribe the losers and Illegal aliens to vote for the partythat will give you everything that the working man earns, THE DEMOCRATS.

Neale Osborne. If illegal aliens weren't getting jobs here they wouldn't keep showing up. If American companies quit hiring them, they would stop showing up.

I'm not sure if the statistic still holds but not long ago, caucasians were the biggest users of welfare in this country. I'd like to see some of the latest statistics on that.

Baucus is the one who is trying to put through the Fine for those who do not have medical insurance, Not President O'Bama.

The GOP did too its in their proposals as well, and its been in HR3200 for months, quit buying into the hype. Just because you fell for the lies and choose to be mis informed due to hatred of Obama doesn't mean you have to stay that way.

You can still hate Obama, but at least get informed.

Do your remember when your parents met the door to door insurance salesman in your home? And they signed you and everyone up for only $4.00 per person, per month? And everyone grew up and went their own ways? I wonder who has collected those small premiums that your parents paid for years and years. I bet it was not your parents. Money just gone, even though they thought they were doing the right thing for their kids.

The insurers, the Blue Dogs, Baucus and GOP played Obama like ukulele. They got him to get rid of everything that would lower premiums while making having insurance mandatory. Now they are insured maximum profits from all of us.

Obama finally got his bi-partisanship. A plan that will screw us all.

No one said it is going to pass and that senator can put it where the sun does not shine.

Obama should become a man and say hay I was wrong this health care policy is bad for this country at this time. I hope everyone who voted for this guy is happy now, maybe I should just become poor and live off of the government. By the way will illegal be fine the $3,800 if they do not get coverage for their family.

Of course not, you know they have more rights than you do already (MAINLY TO YOUR PAYCHECK). The one way to cure the illegal immigration problem is simple: let them all come, with no check on them, just register at the border. The only thing is, ANYONE applying for public assistance must show 5 yrs of US tax returns before receiving even one dollar of welfare, SSI, Healthcare freebies, education, whatever the handout. I would bet that 95% will decide to stay home, and the other 5 % will be welcome as PRODUCTIVE citizens. Since this country was built by people who just packed up their things and came, (YES, even the "Native Americans" aren't the "Rightful owners of this country, they killed off their predecessors), there is no reason to prevent newcomers. Just prevent newcomers from immediately joining the welfare rolls. Let's face it, most of our hardest workers are newer immigrants (Koreans, Japanese, Indian, Middle Eastern), you know, all the ones who you b!tch about running convenience stores and gas stations. THEY aren't wasting their time worrying about who gets what, they just work hard and produce or sell products we all want and need. The current wave (Mexican and South American) are just the 21st century's Italians and Irish. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, they were considered the scum of the Earth. Now, they are the salt of the Earth, and a vital part of our society. If we just give them time, and don't turn them into welfare drones, these new immigrants will become the same, and even sooner if we just shut up and point them towards the jobs we all claim "Americans" do not want to do. They will step up and do these jobs, and well, paying taxes, educating their families, and improving society.

Land of the Free Home of the Brave. Free to do what they tell you to.

With Auto insurance, part of the logic (government and logic?... HA) is to protect others that you may injure with your motor vehicle.

How is my not having health insurance going to hurt other people?

If I choose NOT to have health insurance, and I have a heart attack, does the guy next to me get a heart attack? Or if... as I'm falling to the ground... I fall on his dog and kill it, does the health insurance pay for that?

If I make an intelligent choice to forgo health insurance and leave my money to my children, what business is that of the Governments? What's next? Are they going to tell me I have to buy cigarettes to support farmers? Or I have to buy a car to support our industry?

They have no business telling me what I can or can not buy. At least in a Free society they can't... and we haven't had one of those for nearly 200 years.

No, but when you go to the hospital during that heart attack and then go bankrupt because you can't afford your $100,000 bill, we (meaning society) have to pay for you through higher prices.

When you have only enough money to pay for your rent, power, water and phone bill, car insurance to get to work, put gas in the car and have a few bucks left over, you are NOT going to spend it getting health insurance.

HOW COME THEY DONT FIGHT SO HARD TO GIVE PEOPLE A DECENT WORKING WAGE. While companies that make fortunes only worry about giving investors a strong return on their money.

FINE people all you want - you will still get no money from those who cant afford it.

No, but then every other health insurance user will have to pay for your uninsured heart attack. That's the point of everyone having it. Same with auto insurance.

There is a slight difference here. You can avoid car insurance by not owning a car. You can avoid homewoners insurance by not owning a home. Can you avoid medical insurance by not owning a body?

People are mad because they think their liberties are being taken away. When in reality the you will have freedom to know that you are taken care of in a time of Unpredictable need. Which is better Always be prepared or SEP (someone else problem).

I was rear ended by some young girl who wasnt paying attention. Im grateful to have had auto insurance to go to the hospital and then to my primary care physician who felt it was to costly to give a MRI to make sure my messed up back was okay. Now 4 years later still having issues.

All they care about is getting their big bucks, making lawyers lots of money. Bottom line is most of them dont give a dogs squat about people unless its someone they know. Your just $$$ to them.

My point about car insurance was that the REASON it is mandated is because there is a very real potential that you could hurt someone OTHER THAN YOURSELF. Insurance is supposed to pay for that accident.

With health, assuming no genetic problems, it's ME that I am hurting.

If I choose not to buy health insurance, but rather put the money in a bank. And if I have a heart attack, don't call for help. My family gets the money. The way I want it. After Uncle Sam takes his share, of course.

If someone found me and took me to the hospital, because I don't have insurance, I will not get the best care... not get the MRI or whatever. They'll try to get my assets, probably.

With health insurance, the doctors will perform every test to keep me alive and drain the system, for what... another year? Taking $100 a pill medication?

If this is a free country, I should be able to refuse health insurance. Put an ID braclet on me that says "do not revive", if you want. Let ME make the choice.

In most states if you can show you have the ability to pay for the damage you might inflict you can avoid buying insurance. You can also choose not to drive just like you should be able to choose to not buy health insurance.

Its hilarious, this is not new, this has been in every proposal, even the GOP ones. Cost of caring for the uninsured adds on average 1100 dollar per covered person or aproximatly 8 percent (including employer contributions)

But because we spent last month debunking lies, all of a sudden this is some bombshell.

People without insurance wouldn't be entitled to treatment for so much as a hangnail anywhere in the country without up front cash. Soon enough all the dumb a$$es would be dead.

Maybe basing premiums on income level would be nice.

Oh yes fining people that don't purchase health care would work real well with the........ illegal aliens. I can see them right now...because they SURELY line up to get working visas and then always have lined up to get a drivers license and without question they always register their car and smog it and after that they always buy car insurance....see they follow those laws.

People need to get a grip on what reality is right now in this moment. We here in California pay through the nose in higher fees/taxes for everything under the sun to cover the immense amount of illegal aliens that come here have children use social services and are covered by our public services (EMS, schools, WIC/welfare, police, hospitals etc.). So yet again we as legal law abiding Americans would be mandated to get this health insurance or we would be fined. And we as law abiding people would no doubt pay these fines or be penalized even more. And just as in every other case ...illegals would pay NOTHING, yet they are a huge drain. This is so wrong! And this is America....and that equals FREEDOM. Stop telling me what to do - I follow the laws, pay my taxes have my own insurance work my TAIL off, don't shove something I don't want or need down my throat. Stop the flow of the illegal aliens coming across the border instead of letting that hemorrhage continue before you try to do anything else.

How abserd to compare an automobile to health care insurance. This Baucus must be taking after his namesake, in Greek Mithology. Automobile Insurance is mandatory to protect the people in autos who are smashed up so badly they need medical care for years and years to come. How can Baucus even suggest to have mandatory health care insurance? Can you believe the confusion that would bring to every citizen in America? How many people now cannot afford health care because of loss of employment. How will they pay even the lesser amount of dollars suggested by Baucus? They will not be able to pay mandatory health care insurance. I for one, hope that others in Washington will see how very silly his proprosal is and vote it down for the sake of the average American family. Some people are giving up groceries, telephones, cable TV, in order to just live in this period of "hard times". Mandatory health care - indeed.

I just wish that all of you were in Washington to voice your opinions to Baucus!!!! Great, just great, which makes me wonder how in the world do ideas like Baucus' get this far?

So they plan on punishing the people who do not have health insurance. How do they plan on imposing these fines to the homeless? And what if the people do not pay the fines, are they arrested? If so, then they could use the medical services in prison and have the tax payer fit the bill.

If you don't pay your auto insurance, they impound your car. Maybe, if you don't pay your health insurance, they will impound your body?

Of course Baucus has been in the pocket of insurers all this time. He's been trying to corrupt or kill health reform from the beginning. The fool was the Pres. who trusted him.

What I'll be looking for in the Pres. address on health care is, if he doesn't back PO, what is he for that will lower premiums and prevent insurers from using tricks to kick people off.

Is he for regulating insurers like utilities or what. But what I suspect he'll do is nothing. To do something would risk the wrath of the insurers and he's to scared of any conflict.

A warrior knows, if he unsheaths his sword blood must be drawn. His opponent's or his.

Liberal Senators are becoming more and more bold with their attempts to redistribute wealth and increase the size of US government. Because they have the majority in both houses they no longer feel they need to represent the will of the people.

I for one want an end to all this social and corporate welfare being created. I am tired of reading about tax credits for the poor. What about the working middle class?

Look what happened to the people that received relocation money for Katrina. They just blew it all on liquor and and night clubs.

True Americans would prefer a hand up not a hand out! I will never feel safe again with a liberal controlled government.
