Deputy pleads guilty in jailhouse food tampering

COLUMBUS — A former Ohio deputy accused of feeding an inmate a bologna sandwich that been rubbed against another inmate's genitals has pleaded guilty to two health code violations. In a Columbus courtroom on Wednesday, 38-year-old Joseph Cantwell also apologized for the shame and embarrassment that he said he had caused.

A judge fined him $500 plus court costs, and Cantwell also received a 90-day suspended jail sentence and five years' probation.

Cantwell's attorney called the February incident at the Franklin County Jail a "prank." It led Sheriff Jim Karnes to fire Cantwell and his partner in May. The other deputy was not charged with a crime.

The inmates who were involved have filed lawsuits against the county.

Ick. Also cruel and unusual punishment (bologna sandwich rubbed against other prisoner's genitalia).

I'm not usually one to defend prisoners, but this is gross. Why did the officer take part in this prank? Is he so immature that he finds this funny?

LV Mom, I am a former corrections officer and let me tell you this is mild as far as pranks go. The unfortunate reality is many of these incidents are never reported and inmates just have to suck it up as part of their sentence. I am far from a bleeding heart liberal, but some things are right and some things are wrong, and this is why I am a former officer.

Just another example of a piece of crap pig doing what they do best. I say the inmate makes a turd taco and the pig's gotta eat it all. Slowly chewing each bite. Then he has to lick his fingers clean.

This is a terrible shame. I suspect one reason many inmates do not get rehabilitated is that they suffer abuse while in custody from almost unbelievable things -- like this.

"A prank" is the best the lawyer could come up with? Pranks are things friends do with each other. A person in a position of authority cannot perform a prank. Prison guards can be the lowest form of police officer. One time I was forced to accept one as a partner. He had ONE bullet for his pistol. He almost got us killed because instead of watching a pair of crooks he hid right behind me, restricting my movements.

You do know - that this is only one of hundreds that has been caught, the tip of the ice berg lettuce so to speak. You do know that prisoners have sued the states for less over the food they eat. http://tinyurl.com/mrqdwv Your tax dollars at work. http://tinyurl.com/nnjhpc

My personal feelings on being arrested for an extreme felony act - is that each person who have been proven beyond the shadow of a doubt to be guilty - have lost all rights.

Par, there is no shadow of a doubt because the judicial system is so corrupt it is not funny. Prosecutors, judges, cops, every last one is a liar and a thief. They should not be believed. They just want people in jail, NO MATTER WHAT. It doesn't matter if you're innocent. Try and prove it. The cop who arrested you is going to lie under oath. The prosecutor is going to lie under oath, and the judge.....well, he/she is gonna believe them because they're all i n cahoots (sp) together. They're the ones who should be in prison for ruining many an innocent life. Phuk em all!

Cuzzenbud - thanks - Hey DaVoH !!

There is problems with everything Beavis - it is not a perfect world, and life isn't perfect or fair at times. One must take care of their own things by keeping up on their responsibilities for themselves and the people they hold true. I have been a juror 4 times, on the last one I filled out the form and wrote - I do not believe in the juror system of lay people. I believe that most important trials are held in the press and the media influence the outcome of the trials in some of the cases. Lay people on jurors no matter what they say have prejudice feelings as soon as they see the defendant, and animosity because they 'have' to serve when called upon. When I handed it in on the last case which would of been my 5th trial, they excused me and one other person, and I was already seated on the jury.

Lay people - Those who haven't any professional status - psychologist / psychiatrist / doctors, etc.. have really no way of telling the real facts of the case.. we are not trained individuals who could come to a logical conclusion dealing with any of the above. We cannot judge a person's lunacy we have to take the word of a witness, and witnesses do lie on occassion.. and psychiatry in any form is only one person't opinion about someone they meet and talk with. One can find 6 psychiatrist to say a person is crazy - and another 6 that say he /she is not...it is not a perfect science.

There is a recent effect called the "CSI effect". People believe the crap on TV about how good the forensic labs are. They forget the fact that even the FBI lab in Washington was found to be producing biased results. Biased strongly to the prosecution side.

ruthlessmoose - all the people with all the power are corrupt

Not one person has all the power here in the United States.. we do not have a dictatorship.. and even dictators can only push the limit before the people find him too overpowering then over throw the dictator.
As for this ding-dong in prison - how does it go ? "you reap what you sow"

I get ya Ruth - I can imagine myself as a cop today - bringing case after case to court, standing by watching the courts pass light sentences on people who were deserving of a much tougher sentence, just to be slapped on the wrist.. How do you think in psychological terms, that would wear on you? Day after day after day, week after week, and months after months, and year after years.. of watching scum get off easy... Would you play the game as you once did say 10 years from now as you did on day 1 of your job as a police officer?

These people are not all "corrupt" - it is We the people who are lacking in understanding in the way things are "actually" done, that are different than any book one could read to describe what they do. There is wheeling and dealing from the smallest of businesses to the highest of courts.. Lawyers are taught one thing and then learn things once they are out on their own.. Judges like cops see this day in and day out.. a lot with their own agenda, but you cannot fault the entire system by using corrupt as a guide for the entire justice system, because there is many people within it that put their pants and shoes on the same way you do each day, who go to work trying to do the best they can... It isn't the court system that you should hold true to the offense committed - hold your Legislatures accountable for what goes on in the courts.
