Obama heckled by GOP during speech: 'You lie!'

WASHINGTON — In an extraordinary breach of congressional decorum, a Republican lawmaker shouted "You lie" at President Barack Obama during his speech to Congress Wednesday.

Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., tried to call Obama to apologize in person, but ended up speaking to White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

The contrite congressman, "expressed his apologies" to Emanuel, not the president at whom he had shouted a few hours earlier, Wilson's office said.

By that time, Wilson's House Web site had crashed and he had taken a brutal beating on his Twitter page for breaching protocol and good manners during a presidential speech to a joint session of Congress.

"This evening I let my emotions get the best of me," Wilson said in a statement. "While I disagree with the president's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility."

Wilson's outburst came after Obama said that extending health care to all Americans who seek it would not mean insuring illegal immigrants.

"You lie!" Wilson shouted from his seat on the Republican side of the chamber.

Republicans froze, with several looking in Wilson's direction.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi directed a fierce frown at him; first lady Michelle Obama pursed her lips and shook her head from side to side. Vice President Joe Biden looked down and shook his head, too.

Obama, meanwhile, looked toward the outburst and replied, "That's not true," and went on with his speech.

Right away, Wilson seemed to sense that he had fouled up. Wilson appeared to consult his Blackberry for much of the rest of Obama's speech. He shook his head defiantly after several of the president's statements. When Obama finished, Wilson bolted from the chamber.

Wilson's wasn't the only interruption during Obama's speech, but it was the most notable.

Obama's Republican rival from last year's presidential race for the White House defended the president.

Wilson's behavior was "totally disrespectful," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said on CNN. "There is no place for it in that setting, or any other, and he should apologize for it immediately."

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said "I have never in my 29 years heard an outburst of that nature with reference to a president of the United States speaking as a guest of the House and Senate."

"It was a shameful act," he told WTOP radio.

Hoyer said he'll work with GOP lawmakers to decide whether to punish Wilson.

"dfizz : Sure Benny Boy! We don't allow men who act like women in the club."

Score another one for the Republicans... sexist much?

I know plenty of women who could probably out debate you with their intelligence AND physically kick your ass at the same time.

The republican party may as well resign itself to failure. There are a lot more women and minorities these days than there are angry, fatnecked, white guys. Maybe there is one person left in the party with a braincell, who might explain this to the good old boys club?

SEC. 246. NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS.

Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.

Apart from the part that Obama was talking about his new plan, HR 3200 definitely prohibits payments to illegals. Any illegals that misrepresents and collects FEDERAL payments thus puts themselves in peril of felonious perjury and in danger of deportation. No matter if some could gain the system or not, Wilson lied and Obama is right. Language could not be clearer in stating illegals not covered.

If you read the article you'd see that he actually did try to apologize because he just realized he made a career-ender mistake. However, an apology isn't nearly enough to absolve him or the republican party of this. Unless the party leadership admonishes him for this, and calls for his resignation, and impeaches him if he doesn't voluntarily resign, they are just as guilty.

dfizz, put down your crackpipe. The republican party is little more than a joke now. More than half of their base has left the party since the election, not that many of those leaving the RNC are becomming democrats, most are going independant. But that doesn't matter because when the RNC can only pull less than 25% of the vote... democrats don't have to work very hard to win. Wait 'til 2010, you'll see. The RNC is finished as a major player in politics unless their whole leadership get's fired and replaced by more sensible people.

dfizz, not to sound trite, but I don't believe someone with such poor grammar skills could afford a house and car. Not to mention having such poor manners that you would think this kind of behavior from a congressman during a presidential address would ever be ok. It really does betray you as someone that's not making enough money to be able to buy a house, or car, even on credit. My guess is that you're either making minimum wage, less than minimum wage, or are unemployed.

I suggest that you learn some manners and grammar before you apply for your next job. No one is going to hire someone with such poor grammar and manners for a well paid position.

This was one guy not the whole GOP, as the article suggests. Not defending him, but I guess some people are at the breaking point of the lies coming out of the President's mouth, but I have to agree with you, that was very inappropriate and disrespectful and was beyond the pale, in my humble opinion. And I bet Nancy and Biden were taking names and discussing the punishment as you can see in the background. Seems like I remember some former presidents being booed and jeered as well.

Actually, in 2001, one of the Congresspeople was going to stand up and protest during the joint session of Congress to certify the results of the election. I don't remember if he actually did or not. Here's the transcript in which he was expected to do just that:

            ShreeK -

okay, I'll give you three for the sake of argument (though it has nothing to do with the thread):

            http://hotair.com/archives/2009/02/14/flashback-obama-promises-to-allow-five-days-of-public-comment-before-signing-bills/

Same bill - Pres. Obama says he won't sign pork filled bills ...oooppps same bill had 8000 + earmarks and pork spending Link:

            http://www.newsobserver.com/business/story/1357260.html

Pres. Obama said there would be no lobbyists in White House ...unless there is one (over 50 now I believe) Link:

            http://www.usnews.com/blogs/robert-schlesinger/2009/01/22/no-lobbyist-in-the-obama-administration--except-when-there-is-one.html

And that was just the first month of his ADM.

Then this: Obama - no gov't funding of abortion in HR3200 ....not quite Link:

And this: Obama - you can keep your doctor and your insurance...maybe and maybe not Link:

The Congress had to vote on it Friday - a mere 12 hours or less after it was put online - so did the people have 5 days to review and do anything about it? No - and BTW, 5 days would have been on Wed.

LIE that Obama has told, not to prove him to be a man of his word...

What the crap is the difference?? A lie is when you do something you said you didn't, or didn't do something you said you did. It is being dishonest and telling something that is not true, which he has done. This is but a few of many examples. But thanks for at least admitting he is NOT a man of his word...

We were lied to for 8 years about a lot of things. Do not forget that. All of the statements Obama has made can be checked by your own research. Stop being so controlled by the lies of a group of people that HAVE health care.

1.) It has been shown through their own correspondence; the former administration ousted US attorneys who would not cooperate in pursuing charges (against Democrats) they asked them to. Rove, Miers and aides in particular, used this tactic. They whole lot lied about it during the 2-3 (?) year investigation.

2.) Perrino admited to lying about torture on behalf of the administration.

3.) Tom Ridge admits to being pushed to raise the security alert on the eve of President Bush's re-election, something he saw as politically motivated and worth resigning over.

Three quick ones out of their own mouths. I would like to say, I don't for one minute believe President Bush himself knew about most of it. But, these things did happen.

vol fan, you're a little off-base or hyper-critical with most of the cases you cited, although I do partly agree with you on the lobbyist issue where he didn't 100% abide by his campaign pledge. However, even in the case of Bill Lynn he's being held to special ethics requirements so that any potential conflict of interest is avoided. Lynn was appointed at Gate's request, not Obama's. Note that Obama's lobbyist ban is completely different from Bush's complete acceptance of them, so to be critical of one case - or a handful of cases - misses the point entirely. Is it a lie? That's in the view of the beholder. The simple fact is that he's kept that campaign promise 99.9% of the time, and in the one case where he made an exception he took extra steps to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest. Not good enough for you? I'd suggest you're being a purity troll.

On the abortion issue, you're simply wrong. The Hyde amendment prohibits federal funding of abortion except for rape, incest, and to preserve the life of the mother. The plans in Congress will have a work-around, so that federally subsidized plans do not use federal money to fund other abortions - they will use a sequestered portion of the private premium. You might not like that, but tough luck - such plans will have to have equivalent benefits to other plans. If you don't want an abortion, don't get one.

wrice, one clear lie Bush made was "America doesn't torture", which was especially ludicrous since the DoJ had recently successfully defended the conviction of a Texas sheriff for the same crime Bush had been committing (torture through waterboarding).

            Another obvious lie is this:

            http://thinkprogress.org/2005/12/20/bush-caught-on-tape/

Now, by the way, anytime you hear the United States government talking about wire tap, it requires—a wire tap requires a court order. Nothing has changed, by the way. When we’re talking about chasing down terrorists, we’re talking about getting a court order before we do so.

A few other lies related to Bush's illegal violation of FISA are here:

Okay, well here's a few questions I have from last night then.

              Q. Well, how is it that Obama, who just last week referred to the 47 million Americans who are uninsured, suddenly last night said there were 30 million uninsured? Where did the other 17 million people go? And Why did he say the illegals won't be required to be covered in HR 3200?

              A. Because these two are linked together - the 17 million that was suddenly dropped as being uninsured , IS probably the illegals who will end up being granted amnesty - that is the next step down his road.

              Q. Obama kept talking about "my plan"? What is his plan? Has he shown us his plan outside of about 5 things in HR 3200?

              A. No, he just went to Congress to try and debunk "myths". We still don't know what his plan is, outside of 4 or 5 things he outlined that may or may not be true.

              Q. If he could save 500 billion in medicare by cutting waste and fraud after this bill is supposedly initiated, then why are we not DOING IT NOW?

              A. I have no idea why he isn't.

              Q. Why did he say this: "If you lose your job or change your job, you will be able to get coverage. If you strike out on your own and start a small business, you will be able to get coverage."

              A. Because under the plan, not only will you be able to get coverage, you will be fined a large amount of money if you don't.

              Q. Why did he say preventative care "makes sense, it saves money, and it saves lives."?

The Congressional Budget Office wrote in August: "The evidence suggests that for most preventive services, expanded utilization leads to higher, not lower, medical spending overall." It might save lives but it doesn't save money.

              Q. Remember when Obama said, "if you like your doctor and your plan, you can keep it...PERIOD?" Suddenly last night it changes to this, "Nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have." What happened to the "PERIOD"?

              A. Because you may/will have to change your plan and your coverage. Why else would he have removed the guarantee?

              A couple of other questions:

He said the public option would not eliminate private insurance and yet, here he is explaining how it may have to be done incrementally. Link: http://www.breitbart.tv/uncovered-video-obama-explains-how-his-health-care-plan-will-eliminate-private-insurance/

He says we are turning the corner on the economy last night, and yet the unemployment rate keeps rising - 9.7% this month. And he guaranteed us, with the stimulus, unemplyment wouldn't rise above 8.5%...

There's just too many lies, half truths, and unanswered questions...

vol fan, regarding Obama's proposal, the President does not write legislation. That's not his job or in his authority. He can tell Congress what he wants to see in a bill, and in this case he's given them a mandate without many specifics. You're criticizing the wrong branch of government.

From the Wall Street Journal blogs UPDATE: Wilson’s comment has prompted immediate and intense reactions. “Joe Wilson” is currently the number one search item on Twitter, and fellow Republican and Arizona Sen. John McCain called his comment “totally disrespectful” on CNN’s Larry King Live. McCain said Wilson should apologize to the president “immediately.”

Let's see if an apology is forthcoming from Wilson.

If he doesn't apologize and soon, it'll be a major black eye for the entire GOP. You can bet that no one is more angry at him then the GOP leadership in Congress and are expressing that anger at him right now.

Wilson has already apologized (but not for being an idiot, and not for being wrong on the illegal immigrant issue):

                http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/09/09/wilson-apologizes-i-let-my-emotions-get-the-best-of-me/

"This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility."

The really amusing part of this is that his son, Alan, announced his candidacy for SC Attorney General yesterday. Helluva campaign endorsement!

I'm surprised the apology came so early. However, in the hours or weeks ahead he may be forced to apologize to his home state, those in attendance, those at home, and the First Lady. And I guess his son, Alan, may have his own list.

Personally, I don't think any apology is good enough. Resignation or impeachment is the only way the GOP can keep this from being their biggest black-eye in the past few decades. Even if they do oust him, it still won't be good for them, but at least it won't be such a bad black eye.

Rep. Joe Wilson seems to be missing some of that old southern charm we also grew up hearing about. To the woodshed, Joe!

A couple of Republican moments reminded me of Britain's House of Commons--and while that's fun because it doesn't matter to me, this is different. I don't know where the Republicans find these guys but there seems to be a never-ending stream of them. At least the extreme left kept its collective mouth shut during the speech.

And, by the way, I thought the speech was superb and the plan is a great step forward.

That's because the mainstream left shuns the extreme left. I think the mainstream right has pretty well left the republican party though, so all they have left are the extremists.

As a black person living in this country I can't help to wonder if the dark skin that President Obama has is contributory to such foul and unacceptable behavior. I am only 30 and nowhere in the 20years that I have followed politics have I seem a President cause such reaction. Funny thing is the man really has not even done anything. So my question I guess to the masses that read this is this: Is there no Faith in this President because he is black?

melb : For over 300 hundred years there has been a double standard in this country with how the majority race is treated versus the treatment afforded the minority race(s). And I am here to tell you that not even Obama who is considered a minority, though wearing the trappings of POTUS is immune to that double standard.

Heck, once upon a time the Irish and Italians were discriminated against because they were Catholic or because they were lazy and stupid, or they were all mafia or... it goes on and on. your an idiot to even bring racism into this. A liar is a liar no matter their darn color. You must be a complete fool to concern yourself with the skin color of a man and must be the racist yourself to even go there when he was simply called a liar which is what he is. SO shut up if you are not in touch with the subject being discussed. Go find a place to picket or complain about racism somewhere else and help tear down our country. You didn’t hear everyone say it was racism when they attacked Bush but now they disagree with this guy who happens to be black and suddenly it is only because of racism. People like you are the reason our country is on the brink of collapse because you are so full of crap you want to cause decent in our land instead of uniting everyone. We can all disagree and have for over 200 years but now it always has to have a bunch of idiots like you stirring the pot until soon you will see our country collapse and then you won't say it was the white people or the black you will simply learn to speak a new language that is our new home tongues being spoke on our land because of fools just like you. I am black more black than the president and I say he is a liar as well doe that mean I am saying it because I am a racist? No simply because he is a LIAR! SO shut up with this garbage already.

Concerned... We are fooling ourselves if we think this has nothing to do with race. No one ever asked Bush if his race would be a factor in his governing. They did Obama! Why? Because they are as ignorant as you.

I am an American first and a white woman second. Why could Obama not speak to our lilly white children down in Texas (I'm ashamed to be here right now) about staying in school?

You should know that the very same week President Bush is speaking at the new Cowboy Stadium and many schools are taking field trips to hear him.

Race is indeed an issue in this country. If we continue to pretend it's not we will never move past it. No other President has been so disrespected on so many levels. Ever.

Keep trying! Tell him it was nice to see an American stand up and have some balls for once!

What a juvenile mindset one must have to believe that making an ass out of oneself and one's party and being an uncivil boor is something to be applauded.

What I told Wilson was this -

In a time when MY Republican party is looking like a bunch of crazy conspiracy nuts, unwilling to do anything to help Americans less fortunate than we are, I was at least never humiliated by the way a member of my party acted at a Presidential speech before Congress. Well, until now.

Your boorish behavior is unforgiveable and does nothing to try to help the harm that has been done to our party by outlandish accusations, fear-mongering and divisiveness. When did we become the party that revels in hate and incivility?

I'm finding fewer and fewer reasons to remain in the political party I've been in all my life.

dfizz are you that arrogant that you feel you can speak for the Republican party? VerbalBarb wrote a well-thought out letter to a member of Congress and all you can do is insult with your one-liners. If you expect people to take your views seriously, you'll have to change your tune.

You know Ms. Pelosi will most likely bring you up on sanctions to punish you. Michelle is already contacting her disability legal team, to sue you for whip lash, since she hurt her neck, soft tissues from shaking her head in astonishment that you called her husband a Liar! No one will admit that you actually spoke the truth. Well at least you are not as bad as the Democratic Gaffe, even though you both share the same first name!

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi directed a fierce frown at him; first lady Michelle Obama pursed her lips and shook her head from side to side. Vice President Joe Biden looked down and shook his head, too.

And I am going to contribute to his re-election.

Being a conservative, then a republican, I am quite embarrassed at the fact that a congressman would deliberately disrupt the president's speech and then call him a liar! To my fellow conservatives here on the vine, this is inappropiate and uncalled for! We need to all stand up and denounce Joe Wilson's behaviors and call him on it! What this congressman did was fuel the fire from the left that the repubs are sore losers and they will capatilize on this to make them look bad (which he already has). I can speak for a lot of conservatives that know me here and will offer apologies for this dispicable act of childish behavior! I believe that the president was sincere in his speech and if he can deliver what he says, then I am for it! I had my children watch him and they were taught to be respectable and be quiet when a person (especially the president) speaks! Again, apologies to the president for an idiot that cannot control his childish behavior!

So, it is your contention that illegal immigrants will receive taxpayer money to pay their medical bills.

I'd ask you for a link but you would just direct me to FOX, Rush, or some other group that tells lies.

I'd ask you to do an independent search for truth, but I doubt that's going to happen.

Here you go, Eileen. I did your homework for you.

                                http://www.factcheck.org/2009/08/twenty-six-lies-about-hr-3200/

"the bill does explicitly say that illegal immigrants can’t get any government money to pay for health care. Page 143 states: "Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States." And as we’ve said before, current law prohibits illegal immigrants from participating in government health care programs."

They already get free taxpayer paid health care at the local ER, why would this ever change? So I say Susan-649485 get a second job to pay more taxes to pay for health care for illegal immigrants! I'm tired of paying my hard earned money in taxes that support health care "free" for illegal immigrants, when there are senior citizens and children of our own country suffering for lack of quality health care. Obama wants to redistribute the wealthy to the poor, guess who falls in this category, 20 million plus illegal immigrants!

Blythe, you must be one of the few conservatives who favors a national identity card, or perhaps a serial number tattooed on each of our foreheads. I'm not sure how the language of HR3200 could be any more clear:

SEC. 246. NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS.

Either you willfully are choosing to disregard the plain-language of that section of the bill, or perhaps English isn't your native language. How much more clear could it be?

Since you're "tired" of having a negligible portion of your tax money used for services to undocumented aliens, what's your solution? How do you propose preventing undocumented aliens from driving on federally subsidized roads, or using our federally subsidized postal system or national parks?

Its just amazing how now Obama and the Democrats are pursuing proper legal terms in their health care legislation so that there is no loop holes that allow illegal immigrants to acquire free health care. So I guess Joe's statement "you lie " must have had relevance just poor taste in yelling it out in the Congress setting. So obviously I do understand English, as you so pointed out that I may lack those skills as my native language. I suggest you should get better informed before you attack the credability of a viner.

I think the man is a Hero to finally stand up and say what all of the world is now seeing as true. The democrats did much more than that to Bush during his speeches only the liberal news media didn't come to his rescue like they are their social president O'wronga or Obama who is the worst person to ever be elected to the white house in the history of the USA. He has lied since day one and finally some called him what he is and now you people are whining about it. Good grief you have got to be kidding right? The names the democrats called bush during his speeches and during his term in office and the disrespect the media showed him and your worried about someone calling a liar a liar. I think he should be given a medal of honor for standing on the truth in public which none of you people have the spine to do! He has my vote for president if he will run, finally a man with a back bone to stand up for truth
