PALO ALTO — Hewlett-Packard Co. said Thursday it has elected Marc Andreessen to serve on its board.

Andreessen is co-founder and general partner of venture fund Andreessen Horowitz and co-founder and chairman of Ning, a privately held social networking Web site.

His election brings to 11 the number of HP directors, the company said.

Andreessen served as chief technology officer of America Online Inc. and was a co-founder of Netscape Communications Corp., serving in various positions, including chief technology officer and executive vice president of products.

He is the co-author of Mosaic, the first widely used web browser.

Andreessen also serves on the boards of eBay Inc. and Facebook Inc.

Shares of Hewlett Packard rose 7 cents to close at $45.71.

Another interesting version of this announcement from WSJ has a few mistakes. Mr. Kell should check his facts or WSJ should hire better proof readers to check Mr. Kell's work. Jim Clark, after resigning from SGI which he founded, founded Mosaic Communications Corporation and hired Eric Bina.

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Engineer and entrepreneur Marc Andreessen joined the board of Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) as the personal computer maker has seen improvements in its consumer personal-computer business, but has reported weakness in other areas.

Andreessen is perhaps best known for co-founding Web browser pioneer Netscape Communications in 1994 with Eric Bina as an undergraduate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. That company was acquired in 1998 by America Online. He is also the founder of Ning, a startup that provides software and services that allow anyone to create a social-networking site.

With the appointment, the world's largest PC maker boosted its board to 11 directors.

Andreessen already has ties with H-P. The company acquired Opsware in 2007, formerly known as Loudcloud, which Andreessen also co-founded. He also serves on the boards of online auctioneer eBay Inc. (EBAY) and social-networking giant Facebook Inc. Andreessen joined those boards last year.

H-P's shares were inactive in after-hours trading at $45.71, after closing up 7 cents.
