Scoop: Emmys don’t need a Kanye West moment

— When one engages in a breach in decorum so great that even the president feels the need to call you out on your jackassery, it’s official: you’ve waged a war on manners.

Seven days and at least three apologies after Kanye West's VMA outburst, we’ll find ourselves watching the Emmys, and although a West-ian outburst could in fact be the most interesting thing to happen in the show’s recent memory, I implore everyone in the vicinity of a hot mic during the Sept. 20 broadcast to please behave.

In other words: If you win, and the announcer mispronounces your name, just go with it. Graciously accept your award and if your name happens to sound like “Katherine Heigl” and you feel the need to make a correction, do so good-naturedly in the press room. Don’t overshadow your achievement with a petulant delivery of the proper pronunciation.

Additionally, if you suggest that Jesus ought to "suck it,” as Kathy Griffin did at the 2007 Creative Arts Emmys, it’s not going to go over well. Just because you’re being awarded for your shtick doesn’t mean it’s appropriate everywhere. You won’t win viewers, and there are better ways to gain publicity.

If you are within bum-rush distance of the podium when Alec Baldwin accepts his best actor award for “30 Rock,” do not take the stage and begin any sentence with “yo, Imma let you finish…” (And if you do, just please don’t end the sentence with “‘Two and a Half Men’ is one of the best shows of the year).

Why does it even matter? Awards shows are often accused of being self-congratulatory displays by people who make a lot of money for playing make-believe. That doesn’t exactly resonate with real people. As such, when one of those well-paid folks, whether Kathy Griffin or Kanye West, behaves badly, the whole show looks bad, too.

Let’s elevate West and his actions, for maybe the first and last time, to a teachable moment. It would be nice if this turned out to be one war that ended well. Can’t we all just behave? Please, and thank you.

Oprah goes ‘Mad’ for the ’60s
Regardless of whether “Mad Men” wins any Emmys Sunday night, the show will receive perhaps its most important endorsement soon. On Sept. 21, Oprah Winfrey not only shines a spotlight on the 1960s-era drama, but will redesign her entire set in order to do so.

According to folks at the show, the crew went to work re-creating the show as if it were plucked from a broadcast time capsule — the set was re-designed, the opening credits will run in black and white, there’s an announcer and curtain.

Even host Oprah is getting in on it, as she’ll be wearing a dress designed by Emmy award-winning “Mad Men” costume designer Janie Bryant, and the entire audience will don 1960s garb.

One thing this show does offer that no broadcast from the '60s had: A decade-appropriate version of Oprah’s favorite things.

‘Meatballs’ will be delicious
It’s looking like it will be “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs” at the box office this weekend. The film adaptation of the much-loved children’s book hits 3,000 theaters this weekend, and is sure to be No. 1 at the box office.

“Jennifer’s Body” could give “Meatballs” a run for its money. Since it stars Megan Fox, the quality of the plot becomes less important, and it will draw big teenage male crowds. And since it opens in 2,700 theaters, there are enough screens to keep it competitive.

The wild card is “Love Happens,” with Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart. Not only has the promotion been a little flat, but it’s handicapped by opening in only about 1,800 theaters. If Aniston really has big screen star power, this film will prove it.

What's Wrong With Hazlett's Column Today.

1. The Emmy Awards. You know, I was just going to ream you a new one - but I can't. As much as EYE may not like your "advice" - it IS original writing. I doubt even one person that'll be near a hot mic on Sunday night will read this - but I guess a girl can dream, eh Hazlett?

2. PopeRah. Hm, sourced and everything. Hey - can you get me into the audience, since you know folks close to the show? My double-wide needs a new awning.

3. Weekend Box Office. I disagree - I think Foxy Mama will take the weekend. Too many raging testosteronies (kinda like trannys - except the opposite) (see I can make up words, too) wanting a look at that. Yes, she IS all that. Not that I care - I'm just too, um, you know....do I have to spell it out for you? All right - uninterested where Fox is concerned.

All right Hazlett - I think you get a "B" to today's effort. Pretty good actually.

BRING ME THE HEAD OF WHOEVER GREEN-LIGHTED KATE GOSSELIN'S NEW TALK SHOW, WITH THE PILOT BEING TAPED THIS WEEKEND.

I could EAT pen and paper and PUKE a better column.

Randy from Maine.

Please don't compare Kanye West and Kathie Griffin.  Kathie's "suck it jesus" comment was meant as a joke pointing out the silliness of some ppls love of thanking jesus after winning.  Kanye West is a douchebag of massive proportions trying to steal the limelight from someone who's actually talented.. not the same thing at all.. i guess you didn't get Kathie's joke..

No Party Affiliation

Regardless of what you think of him, Kanye West was correct in one thing - Taylor Swift should not have won. As a "singer", and an ugly blonde to boot, of one of the worst forms of attempted music, she should have been banned. Country, bluegrass, anything x-tian, ect... is in no way music. Then, too, neither is Rap, urban, hip-hop, soul or other horrible styles like them. They all are just noise pollution, in the most horrendous way possible!

Classical, Jazz, Rock, now those are MUSIC.

Why not compare them? They both have huge egos. One thinks she's funny and the other thinks he can sing. Both full of self-importance.

And jokes about Jesus aren't funny as was obvious by the chilled response to that "joke."

the main reason there was a chilled response to that joke is because nobody wants to make jokes about religeon because so many religious ppl get all huffy about it. whether or not you think her joke was funny, hers was an attempt at humor whereas his was purely an attempt to say taylor shouldn't have gotten an award instead of beyonce. his was a purely negative comment, hers was at least an attempt at something positive.

...really, No Party Affiliation? Rock is music while country isn't? You realize that rock HAS ROOTS IN COUNTRY MUSIC? And I laugh at the statement that the Christian style isn't music. You know, if you go back far enough, you'll see a form of music that predates classical, jazz and rock... it's called 'Gregorian chant'... and it's VERY closely related to Christianity.

Got a chuckle from your post. And while I would readily agree that K. West is a good example of dumbing of America, I really do think there is some stiff competition for first place or the worse example. For instance; Paris Hilton, Bobby Brown, Octo-Mom. There are many more as I'm sure you are well aware!

It has happened again - you've finished another week not contributing anything original or that took a bit of work to collect. It's easy - your budget is what $5 (the cost of a rag magazine) times 6 magazines - $30 (I am sure that is part of your allure for MSNBC - besides whoever you are doing over there). Let's see - your opinion on manners (no need), Mad Men (your obsession), your movie predictions (poop). All together - way toooooo much of you and nothing of any substance. And just let me clue you in - I would never mis represent myself like you do. Talk about manners - the rudest, you claim one thing and do nothing. Randy's B is definetly reaching for an Oprah seat. That will never happen Randy - this woman wants nothing to do with us or reality. I can't believe I can't rate this crap a 0? No scoop - just poop.

I believe Kanye west did what was right, what many black people never had has the corauge to do and is to stand up . hey I would had never taking Kanye west side if it would have been britnet spears or someone who actually had work hard for it. ask people like michael jordan what he think? some people had things just giving to them others work hard and that is because there is BET and that is why we become strongers because unfearness.

First of all Carlos...you shouldn't have dropped out of school...go back and learn how to write.

What, no mention of racism? This country is one big double standard. If a white person did what Kanye did...the headline would be RACISM at the VMA! But nooooooo...
A white guy calls a black guy a liar, and instead of focussing on the real transgression...disrespect to our president... the headline is racism.
Wow, we are so screwed up.
"Can't we all just get along?"
Apparently, not in the foreseeable future.

Carlos, you are wrong. It does not take courage to stand up and make an arce of yourself, it is a lack of common sense, good manners and decorum.

I agree Kanye's conduct was a disgrace and so was Serena Williams. We don't need this conduct by those who the young people follow and admire. Yet I notice how Rep. Wilson, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and others can disrespect the President of the United States and there is no problem with that. I guess we're saying who can be disrespectful and who can't. It's becoming clear per example only the chosen can disrespect and show lack of manners but others better know their place or they can be dismissed and removed.

This was not a very racist moment as far as I am concerned. Kanye was drinking heavily before the event and I am sure alcohol had something to do with his behavior as well as an inflated sense of self importance. The most racist thing that has happened lately came from our President. When the brouhaha between the white police officer and the black college professor surfaced in a question to our President he decided before he had all the information that the police officer had to be in the wrong. As soon as I saw the professor and heard his rant it is obvious he was the problem. I could never be arrested in my own home because once the police walked in I'd be the most cooperating person they've ever dealt with. As far as carlos goes - it's great to be able to express your opinion but you might want to try to clean up your presentation a bit.

He could not stand a white person winning something ; as it is that way with most blacks. He needs to be kept away from television as he is a complete ignorant racist.

Debbie, you're the racist. Kanye realized immediately what he did was assanine... a common situation with drunk people. A lot of people there may have been upset that Swift is a country music singer but a lot of people are upset that "rapping" is considered a legitimate music genre. Kanye has been praisd for being very tallented but as with a lot of people who are praised it has gone to his head. He'll get his - just don't worry about it.

on Kanye- I remember the "good old days" when a hint of scandal was enough to ruin a celebrities career. These days, unless they have a police record or something equally as scandalous, they can't become big stars. Just another example of the direction our country is going.

Kanye shouldn't be a problem @ the Emmys because he has no business or reason to be there. Kathy Griffin is nasty mouthed anyways & I just do not watch her. Why do people thinks they need to show themselves at such a special time? I guess just to get attention & they have no confidence in themselves. Hope all goes well...
