LOS ANGELES — Movie fans are eagerly making the journey to "Where the Wild Things Are."

The live-action adaptation of Maurice Sendak's beloved picture book led the box office with a $32.5 million opening weekend.

"Where the Wild Things Are" was followed by Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler's vengeance thriller "Law Abiding Citizen," which debuted with $21.3 million.

Expanding into wider release, the low-budget horror sensation "Paranormal Activity" moved up to No. 3 with $20.2 million.

"Paranormal Activity" outdid the premiere of the big studio fright flick "The Stepfather," which played in nearly four times as many theaters but managed just a No. 5 opening with $12.3 million.

I wanted to see "Couples Retreat" this weekend. Turns out I had a concussion.

I just got back to the US, after two years in South America, and I have to say...

What is going on with Hollywood? I've been renting movies off NetFlix, On Demand, etc., and they are just terrible.

Small wonder that the film industry is tanking (coupled with the weak economy), but some of this formulaic crap that they keep churning out, not even worth watching for free.

I'm back to watching the classics.

I think Hollywood just banned all new ideas, and are committed to the same ol' thing. That will work for a while (think Dark Knight) until people wake up and realize that they are pretty much watching the same movie over and over.

But, since most people seem to want to chat and game and text during a movie, maybe whatever is on screen really doesn't matter anymore anyway.

Glad to see Zombieland doing well. Hopefully they make another one.
