Limbaugh predicted outcry over his Rams bid

— Along with his sharp tongue, conservative radio pundit Rush Limbaugh has proved to have a pretty accurate crystal ball. He told TODAY that critics would come out of the woodwork to slam his bid to buy football’s St. Louis Rams, and sure enough, they have.

The Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, along with the head of the National Football League’s players union, came out swinging Monday against Limbaugh’s quest to become new co-owner of the beleaguered Rams football franchise in Limbaugh’s native Missouri.

Sharpton requested a meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss what he calls “a myriad of reasons as to why [Limbaugh] should not be given an opportunity” to become the team’s owner. Jackson agreed that Limbaugh “should not have the privilege of owning an NFL franchise.”

And NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith exhorted players to oppose Limbaugh’s bid, citing anti-union views the radio commentator has espoused on his nationally syndicated show.

‘They’re gonna go nuts’
None of this comes as a surprise to the 58-year-old Limbaugh. During an interview with national correspondent Jamie Gangel that aired Monday and continues Tuesday on TODAY, Limbaugh predicted the knives would come out.

“They’re gonna go nuts,” Limbaugh said of his detractors. “This is the kind of stuff they’ve been trying to make sure doesn’t happen with me. All this stuff is the mainstreaming of Rush Limbaugh from off this far-right fringe they’ve tried to put me [in]. I just keep tiptoeing into the mainstream. And it just irritates them.”

Limbaugh resigned from a 2003 stint as football commentator for ESPN after just two short months as anger built over his comment that a black Philadelphia Eagles quarterback was overrated because “the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well.”

Limbaugh fanned the flames with the NFL again in 2007 when he said on his radio show, “The NFL too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.”

While the Rams aren’t officially up for sale, the team’s majority owners, Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez, have retained the services of investment banking firm Goldman Sachs to investigate the possibility of selling off the team. The Rams, who moved to St. Louis from Los Angeles in 1994, won a Super Bowl in 2000, but have since fallen on hard times: The team has lost 15 games in a row, dating back to last season.

Limbaugh and Dave Checketts, owner of the St. Louis Blues hockey team, lead a consortium aiming to buy the Rams, whose value has been placed between $700 million and $750 million.

‘I love football’
Limbaugh told TODAY owning an NFL franchise would be a dream come true for him.

“I love football, I love being close to it,” he told TODAY’s Gangel. “Every year my love for the National Football League grows, for football as a game grows. And, I mean, what a fun thing to do — to have a chance to own part of one?”

Limbaugh remains defiant of critics who say he got what he deserved in getting axed from ESPN for his comment about football player Donovan McNabb and black quarterbacks. He told TODAY, “I said exactly what I meant, and if you want me to, I’ll say it again.” He said it was political correctness, not widespread outrage, that led to his being out.

In fact, Limbaugh told Gangel his employers, ESPN, initially licked their chops over the controversy. “I got a call after that [saying], ‘Oh, man, is this not great? Can you imagine our ratings on Sunday?’ ” Limbaugh says “nobody was unhappy at all” until the Philadelphia media began hammering at him, and 17-year ESPN veteran Tom Jackson, an ex-NFL pro who is African-American, issued an ultimatum: “It’s either me or Limbaugh.”

McNabb, the man at the center of the 2003 controversy, was asked about the prospect of Limbaugh’s owning the St. Louis Rams. He replied, “If he’s rewarded to buy them, congratulations to him. But I won’t be in St. Louis anytime soon.”

Union head Smith said he’s asking the league’s players to embrace their roles “as partners in the business of the NFL” to rally against Limbaugh’s bid, saying, “We will not risk going backward, giving up, giving in or lying down to it.”

What Im surprised at is that the today show gives Rush a platform to express his hate, prejudice and unamerican political views. If he had his way we would still have negro slaves and George Bush would still be destroying this country. He is exactly what has put this country in the shape it is in where we have no respect in the world, and our country is in a depression. If left up to him we would stay in these conditions and the normal people in this nation would be left in poverty, uneducated, and without health insurance. Thank God most of this country can see what a idiotic pompous big mouth he is.

He says that football games resembling gang thugs fighting without weapons, and he's surprised that there's an outcry? Why would he want to own a team when he thinks they are thugs to begin with?

    Is he an idiot?

Good. That clown will never own a franchise. The NFL would be insane to allow him to. They have other bidders, and one of them will be chosen. You cannot simply attack the NFL and its players over and over and then walk up to Goodell with a check seeking a team. You cant trust him to make good, sound, FOOTBALL decisions because we ALL know where his personal biases are...

You make race-baiting comments and then "predict" that there will be backlash against you buying a sports team? Back in the 80s he was occasionally funny. Now he's just mean and bitter. Will someone please run over this guy with a bulldozer.

Wait a minute but didn't HE RESIGN after the comments about Donovan McNabb??? It reads like he was fired! And why should he be the only one with free speech?? He can say his opinion on a public figure but so can the football players, owners, media, fans, ets...and I am sorry, but it was no mean feat to predict his detractors would go crazy, it is what happens on either side, he goes crazy with comments too! Everyone needs to step off and chill out....

As opposed to some of the players in the NFL....seems to have been just a few stories of them involved in sexual assault, battery, dog-killing, and drunken driving...and toss in the occasional vehicular homicide. And they are the guys on TV every weekend and selling sneakers to our kids.

Outside of a few publicity-seeking team owners...who even knows or cares about whomever might be a part of an ownership group.

I wonder if members of the press, who are slamming Mr. Limbaugh's bid, would have as much to say if the ever-complaining Al Sharpton was part of an ownership group seeking to buy a sports team ???? Hint: They would not say a word over being afraid to be labelled as racists.

Who really cares if Mr. Limbaugh owns part of a team ??? I'm sure the folks in St. Louis are open to nearly anyone who could possibly help get the team into the endzone once in a while.

Also what in the hell do they know about football? They are just a couple of hypocritical jerks shooting their mouth off about something they know nothing about.

Rush Limbaugh is a dope taking nut, and we all know it. He is no cleaner than Sharpton or Jackson, he just get to tell his low-life side to more people. The irony of this is, the man should not be aloud to be part owner in a circus of monkeys, although he is one of them. I hope every player on the team if he becomes part owner refuses to play. Russ what encourage that if Jackson or Sharpton were involved, so it's fair play for him, also. Tony-268769, Russ Limbaugh has always said what ever he wishes, his color is not a draw back, and if you think it is, listen to him on the radio. The man is a loud, foil-mouth radical fool. Russ Limbaugh and Iran's president has got to be related, they both act just alike, "NUTS".

If the players refuse to play...then they can sit home without their paychecks in hand....let the second team play, they couldn't do much worse with motivated subs on the field.

The things people like these have said against whites puts them in no position to be critical of anybody. Why isn't there anyone to challenge them up front?

I never listened to much talk radio but I spent a few days researching some of this guy and I cant find one racist remark or incident. I found plenty of political speak, lots of insults and things I would not really agree with. But I can not find one bit of information that makes him racist or unqualified for owning a team franchise. I did research also in fairness on other team owners in NFL/NBA/NHL/MLB and there is plenty there to go around if you want to start with who should or should not own a team in professional sports. Lets not even get into the players and their attitudes and comments. You may not care for this guy but nothing documented or public that I can find makes him unable to own a team.

If anyone has specifics other than "hes racist" "I hate him" please post so I can read it.

                      Thanks

I am not racist, in fact I am married to a woman of color... and am a white guy.

rush is not a racist, the only comments that can truly be attributed to him are not racist... comparing a football game to crips and bloods is not racist. his comment about the black quarterback was true, and still is to this day, I always root for the black quarterback to do well, whatever team... it is great to see, since it wasn't too very long ago there were NO black quarterbacks...

what rush said about donavan mcnabb wasn't racist...

what is truly bizarre is that there have been many quotes fabricated that are racist, but rush never said them... people are out there creating fake quotes...

this world is nuts... black guys run around all day calling each other the N word, but don imus makes a very poor joke, calling some young black women on a ball team "nappy headed ho's", and he gets fired for it...

I will never respect al sharpton or jesse jackson again, they are the worst race baiters and dividers of all.

It does not matter if Rush is a racist or not because he is laughing all the way to the bank saying what others have more sense than to say...

What is the real problem and bothers me more is that some of his audience ARE racist and what he says is pumping them up in their hatred of non whites.

Since tiny minds think small thoughts my hope is that he will soon say the wrong thing about the right person and get booted off the airwaves.

He also started as a moderate republican like most Missourians, but switched after meeting a few of the Secret Cult Republican Politicians.

Simple answer. The Most Reverend Jesse Jackson also "made his wealth appealing to the fears of whites" by threatening public and false accusations of "racism"...which, of course, be avoided via the simple method of making a financial donation to the Good Reverend's "Operation Push" or "Rainbow Coalition" coffers.

Actually....Mr. Jackson "made some big money" doing this in the "white" community.

And should Mr. Limbaugh be successful in acquiring a part ownership position within the St. Louis Rams organization, you can bet your last after-tax dollar that Mr. Jackson will be headed to St. Louis with busloads of paid supporters to put the heat on Rams ownership to make their hefty donation to avoid the picketing, threatened boycotts, and all around negative press attention he will surely threaten to bring to the table.

And this whole flap will have the Good Reverend on the television news for the next few days....mumbling and stammering his anger and objections for all of us to listen to and wonder " what did that guy just say" ???

Reverend Jackson just needs three things: (1) press attention (2) lots of money (3) a good speech therapist.

Be forewarned that all of the excuses Rush fans use to defend Rush's comments WILL be used when applicable...I mean, since you think so highly of these defenses, they must be good ones.

                                :)

Duh, anything Rush does in the spotlight is criticized because it's only his fans that for some reason buy into his BS.

The rest of the public doesn't want any part of it.

Let's enforce affirmative action in the NFL and the NBA; it would be boring but politically correct. All you ignorant, slobbering, hatemongering liberals are in for a rude awakening in 2012. Get ready 'cause you're going back in the Darwinian pond scum you came out of.

What garbage................Now it is the opposite, we have black people with their 60 % NFL players keeping this particular guy out and calling HIM a racist! What about the degrading comments by the Sharptons, Jacksons and so many others in their racial slurs being continually ignored?

Maybe we all need to really get this racial thing out in the open once and for all.....get the Black Caucus out there and lets get a White one going.......lets engage in long over due equality rights in this country which has been long overlooked and mis interpreted. Equality meant equal opportunity for all. There were supposed to be no special interest groups and now it appears necessary for all of us here in this country to belong to one.

There already is a white caucus. It's known as the Klan.

Although I disagree with Rush on a variety of issues I find this whole uproar ridiculous. Does anyone really think Rush is going to make a big investment in a sports team and then mistreat or run his players off? Do you really think he would want to lose millions of dollars by destroying a team he owned?

Rush has made his money giving his opinion three hours a day. The fact people listen to him means they either agree with him, find him entertaining or are open-minded enough to listen to someone with a different point of view. Based on his pay and longevity it is safe to say he has many listeners.

What about the Revs. Jackson and Sharpton--have they ever owned a business or hired employees to run an enterprise that sold an actual product? To the best of my memory both have made their money running organizations that thrived off racial discord.

Limbaugh was criticized for his comments relating to McNabb. Based on reading the remarks in context they were more of a criticism of the political correctness in professional athletics than of McNabb. But even if you believe the remarks were critical of McNabb, does this wealthy athlete's skin color give him a pass on how well he plays? Have we as a country reached a point where an African American is seen as so fragile they can't be criticized?

In the end Limbaugh will find somewhere else to invest his wealth. Perhaps his critics should exam themselves. This whole issue has shown the lack of tolerance and open-mindedness among those who attacked a man that has a different point of view from them.

Solid observations, and well said. Thank you for taking the time to pen your thoughts.

There is a strict drug policy for players....how would it have looked if the Rams were owned by a drug addict?

Let us all pause for a minute. We are all pawns in this game. Limbu, Jesse and the Sharpton have all used us in their game of achieving their personal objectives which is largely their own pockets. You are helping Limbu, Sharpton, and Jesse drum up their ratings which translates into millions of dollars for them personally into their bank accounts. And what about you and me? What does this do for you. Stop being duped into this crazy myriad.

Here's the best part of the quotes attributed to Rush Limbaugh... The supposed quotes that prove he's a racist.

They were written by liberals!!!! Isn't that absolutely delicious irony?

Here are some of the top quotes... as written... as fabricated by liberals!!

A liberal wrote these words and claimed they came out of Rush Limbaugh's mouth: I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark.

A liberal wrote these words and claimed they came out of Rush Limbaugh's mouth: You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray [the confessed assassin of Martin Luther King]. We miss you, James. Godspeed.

A liberal wrote these words and claimed they came out of Rush Limbaugh's mouth: Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?

A liberal wrote these words and claimed they came out of Rush Limbaugh's mouth: Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.

A liberal wrote these words and claimed they came out of Rush Limbaugh's mouth: The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies.

A liberal wrote these words and claimed they came out of Rush Limbaugh's mouth: They’re 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?

Delicious irony, indeed. It's us conservatives that have been saying for decades that the racists among us are the liberals. And they have the audacity to use their own words to claim someone else is the racist. Delicious irony.
