CQ: Hitler, Pelosi, and 'Vile Tweets'

WASHINGTON — TON - If Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas, the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, were a movie golfer, he’d be David Simms, the antagonist in director Ron Shelton’s 1996 romantic comedy, “Tin Cup.”

That movie, you’ll recall, starred Kevin Costner as driving range pro Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy.

Tin Cup/Costner is the Errol Flynn of movie golf, the swashbuckling hero of derring-do, always ready to pull the three-wood and have a go at it, even from bad lies in the rough and over water; Simms, played by Don Johnson, is Tin Cup’s opposite and his nemesis: a “grinder,” the kind of golfer who’s perfectly happy with par, and who always plays the safe shot, even when the riskier shot isn’t all much riskier.

In a pivotal scene early in the movie, Simms must face the Hamlet-like question all golfers regularly face — to lay up, or man up.

Simms chooses to lay up, and Tin Cup mocks him for it mercilessly. Later, when his caddie reminds him that his perpetual refusal ever to lay up — and his consequent failure, time after time — is what’s kept him from a career of fame and glory on the PGA Tour, Tin Cup avers dismissively, “Greatness courts failure.”

A romantic line, to be sure, but one never uttered by Chairman Sessions — at least, not if the NRCC’s decision Tuesday to cave to pressure from Democrats is any indication of how Sessions approaches politics.

Either that, or Sessions and his henchmen are far sneakier than I give them credit for being.

At issue was a mashup video clip that parodied House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Democrats’ positions on health care, by swapping out subtitles in a popular video clip on YouTube. Sessions, or his NRCC senior staff, relented under pressure from Democrats, and pulled the link.

In other words, they laid up, when they should have pulled the three-wood and gone for it.

To begin, no one at the NRCC had anything to do with the creation of the video clip in question, which is a clever melding of a very popular clip from a Hitler biopic, “Der Untertag” — released under the title “Downfall” in the United States.

All anybody at the NRCC did was watch the clip, think it was a funny way to parody Pelosi and the Democrats’ approach to health care overhaul, and Tweet it — that is, link to the video clip in the NRCC’s Twitter feed, which has about 4,500 followers.

For this, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee went utterly nuts, declaring that the NRCC was comparing Pelosi to Adolf Hitler, and demanding that Minority Leader John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, chastise Sessions and demand the removal of “this vile Tweet.”

“This vile Tweet?”

Seriously?

The proper response from the NRCC should have been, “Man up. Politics ain’t bean bag — and you know it.”

For good measure, the NRCC could have included in its response links to any of these video mashups, which, not coincidentally, use the exact same three-minute clip from “Der Untertag” — Hitler Finds Out Sarah Palin Resigns, Republican Party War Room and Hitler Finds Out Ted Kennedy Is Dead — but which happen to make fun of Republicans.

“Der Untertag” is a particularly popular video clip for mashups. My personal favorite has nothing to do with politics, unless one counts USC Trojan football as political: Hitler Defends Pete Carroll.

I don’t recall Republicans screaming bloody murder over those clips. But something tells me that if they had, Democrats would have said, “Man up. Politics ain’t beanbag — and you know it.”

In this event, it certainly appears that the Republicans over at the NRCC were a bit weak-kneed today.

There is, of course, the other possibility — that Sessions and his senior staff, having alerted the world to the existence of the video clip, decided they could now afford to take down their link to it in the spirit of bipartisanship (or whatever), secure in the knowledge that the genie is out of the bottle, and the video clip will continue to gain viewers as it explodes virally.

I’d like to believe the latter is the case. But because I bet with my head, and not my heart, I’ll wager on the former.

This is typical of the Democrats. When the Republicans where parodied, they thought it was funny. Now the shoes on the other foot, and they scream bloody murder. Typical left wing liberal hypocrits.

The Dems were OK with the GOP bashing videos but don't have the cajones to take the satire on themselves. Typical. My Dem friends love the Healthcare video and the Pelosi bashing. Maybe that is Nancy's real problem, she is afraid of being ridiculed within her own party?

How DARE you compare Pelosi to Hitler.

Why do some people think that it is okay to insult Hitler just because he's dead? He was a great man (in his own mind) and accomplished great things (in his own mind). Granted he was pure evil, marginally insane and threatened or silenced all who disagreed with him; but that's where the similarities to Pelosi end.

How did morons get attracted to the GOP?

The GOP is classically connected to rich people, big business and

zero reforms (unless it saves the insurance companies $$).

"Conservatives" of today are illiterate, uneducated, mean spirited, racist, hicks,

hateful, religious bigots who would rescind emancipation and women's suffrage.

Now these people comprise a big robot owned by the GOP smear machine.

      Crimes of the GOP

      (1) disenfranchisement in the Bush elections...Florida

      (2) lying/smear campaign about Kerry's war record....triple shame!

Way back McGovern said he underestimated the GOP smear machine and lost.

      (3) awarding of the Air Force $40 billion tanker contract to France in the middle of a recession.

Boeing has laid off many workers....this is high treason

When the medicare bill was in process, there were 1000 lobbyists in DC putting evil pressure

      on congress people.

      GOP = rats in suits

Likely that modern GOPers are not that wealthy so they will someday need the health insurance

they argued against. Robots USED by the GOP...what chumps?

landon - That is one big difference between liberals and conservatives. We all NEED things, but only liberals believe in supporting the gov't stealing from other people so we can have them. Conservatives look for ways to provide for ourselves, and also try to help those around us by OURSELVES. We realize the gov't wastes more than it helps.

When we measure what is "right" in politics by the worst that others have done in the past, we are the weak-kneed ones. Measure and act based on what's "right" based on your own personal ethics? ... Now THAT takes guts and is the true "man-up" route. I'm afraid this author chose the weak-kneed route.

One year after his election, President Obama has a 53% job approval rating, putting him near the bottom of the list of elected presidents since World War II, rank-ordered on the basis of their approval ratings one year after their initial election.

Obama's current 53% job approval rating (for the week of Oct.26-Nov. 1) is ahead of Bill Clinton's rating one year after his election, and essentially tied with Reagan's in 1981 and Carter's in 1977. The other five presidents -- George W. Bush, John F. Kennedy, George H.W. Bush, Richard Nixon, and Dwight Eisenhower -- all had significantly higher ratings a year after their election.

The proper response from the NRCC should have been, “Man up. Politics ain’t bean bag — and you know it.” Of course politics isn't cordial greetings and pleasant conversions, but the vitriol both parties use to disparage the other is part of the growing partisanship in our Government. As an old clique goes, we can agree to disagree, should be how we conduct ourselves. You read it in every political post on News Vine, the hatred one party has against the other. We all fail to remember, before we were Democrats or Republicans, we were born as Americans. We didn't hate each other as we grew from babes to adults, but once we became a party supporter, we then seem to despise those we cherished as friends. It is time we took the hardball out of politics and put in place real debate about what ails our Nation. Let's stop the name calling and get back to doing what is best for us all.

I think you mean "Untergang" (Downfall), not "Untertag" (whatever that means). As your posterboy Donnie Rumsfeld might have said, you don't even know what you think you know.

When any political party stoops to childlike behavior it is doomed. Just another reason to question the mentality of a party that wants to rule, loses, then tries childlike comparisons to get their point across. If this is the only way to lead, then obviously they have no platforms, morals, or abilities to lead anyone. I'm happy I'm a Democrat, former Republican, and will never ever vote republican again. The "grand old party" has lost it's luster and real politicians, and is now controlled by those that don't have a clue about governing anyone let alone their own party.

And just who controls the Democrats, Joe? Do you think the Democrats have a clue on governing anyone? Maybe in a Commie sort of way, maybe they do, I take that back. They sure as hell get upset when you make fun of them, they can dish it out, but can't take it.

Both parties have lost their "luster." I don't think either is doing much to help the people, they are doing plenty to help themselves, especially your party, to my money.

The difference between the GOP and the Democrats is that neither the DNC nor any of their campaign committees linked to the videos comparing Republicans to Hitler, so far as I know.  Certainly Mr. Pascoe doesn't indicate that they did, which would have been relevant, if they had.  It's not the existence of the video that Dems were complaining about, but the link to it on the NRCC site.  They were right to object, and for once, the Republicans were right to back down and remove the link.

I know politics are a dirty game, and have been loooong before we even had an America to call our country, but the political discourse of late has been even dirtier, meaner and more childish than ever. And I'm pointing fingers at both sides for that.

I'm glad the video was pulled in the hopes that maybe, MAYBE people realized that comparing our modern politicians to Hitler was so far beyond decent, it's scary.

And besides, has no one ever heard of Godwin's Law? Look it up on Wikipedia or Google when you get the chance...
