WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama pushed back against critics of his health care plan on Saturday with a stern warning that absent reform, costs will continue to rise and eventually devastate the U.S. economy.

The administration is trying to build momentum for the effort following a 14-9 vote this week by the Senate Finance Committee for legislation that would extend health care to millions of people.

Democrats hailed the vote as a victory, in part because the bill was supported by a Republican, Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe. But the legislation faces considerable opposition with the health insurance industry, labor unions and large business organizations lining up against it.

"The history is clear: For decades rising health care costs have unleashed havoc on families, businesses and the economy," the president said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address. "And for decades, whenever we have tried to reform the system, the insurance companies have done everything in their considerable power to stop us."

Earlier this week, the health insurance industry released a study concluding that the Finance Committee bill — one of five competing House and Senate health care measures — would raise premiums significantly for millions of people who already have health coverage. The report drew intense criticism from the White House, Democrats in Congress and other advocates of the bill.

Obama took aim at the report in his speech, contending that industry was "filling the airwaves with deceptive and dishonest ads," sending money and lobbyists to Capitol Hill and paying for studies "designed to mislead the American people."

In general, the bills moving through Congress would require most Americans to buy insurance, provide federal subsidies to help lower-income people afford coverage and help small businesses defray the cost of extending coverage to their workers.

The measures would bar insurance companies from denying coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions and limit their ability to charge higher premiums based on age or family size. Expanded coverage would be paid for by cutting hundreds of billions of dollars from future Medicare payments to health care providers.

The House and Senate bills also envision higher taxes — an income tax surcharge on million-dollar wage-earners in the case of the House and a new excise levy on insurance companies selling high-cost policies in the case of the Senate Finance Committee bill.

Republican opponents of the bills say the increased cost will be passed on to patients, further job losses and give the government more say in who gets medical care and what kind.

"Americans inherently know government interference drives costs up, not down," Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, said in the GOP's weekly message. "The massive health care plans being crafted behind closed doors in Washington will ultimately allow the government to decide what doctors we can see, what treatments the government thinks you deserve and what medicines you can receive."

Obama contends the price of not acting will be too high.

He said health care premiums have doubled in the past decade, and out-of-pocket costs have grown by one-third. Unless the system is overhauled as he has suggested, rising costs will mean lower salaries and higher unemployment for workers, lower profits for businesses and larger numbers of people going without insurance, the president said.

"It is no exaggeration to say that unless we act, these costs will devastate the U.S. economy," Obama said.

He might want to look around the country. There's little if anything left to devastate anymore. I guess the health insurance industry will stay healthy though because if the Baucus bill passes then they'll get 50 million new customers handed to them by force of law.

Something new please

The economy is in bad shape, for sure. But things could get a lot worse. We can't keep letting healthcare costs gobble up more and more of our GDP. That's unsustainable. There's plenty left to devastate.

NEWSFLASH -

The government has already allowed the bankers to decimate the country.  The largest theft in American history is already taking place and there is nothing we can do about it! This has been a carefully crafted plan between the financial and political elites! The Bush administration allowed this plan to take place behind our backs and Obama now is going to finish us off with the print and spend theory and destroy our currency!  The social ideology is taking place to prepare for the collapse of the dollar.  We will all be broke as the United States begins its "Fire Sale" to pay off its endless barrage of debt.

I read again, statement by our Messiah that says, "Saturday with a stern warning that absent reform, costs will continue to rise and eventually devastate the U.S. economy."  It seems that every week or two weeks we read the same warning about something, then no matter what congress does nothing changes, except the National debt keeps setting new records for our children.  when will it end, when we need to start the dollar all over again? or maybe we will be buying wheel borrows   to go pick up the loaf of bread.

Our duel Government, the cabinet and the Czars are as bad as Warren Hardings administration for graft or just plain ripping off the taxpayer.

I seem to remember something about crying wolf to often, and maybe the American public has gotten to that point.

      A Darkie? Seriously?

What color am I? Oh that's right, you don't know. Your assertion of racism is as unjustified as it is stupid. It is the only argument the left has to offer anymore and it is the recourse of a weak mind. Tell me, do you know the heritage of President Obama? No? So it's just more of the left talking out of their rear end again. Of course it's understandable since that's where they like to keep their heads.

Just so that it's clear, Obama is half White. That's right 50% of him is good 'ol fashion Caucasian. Most of the other half is Arabic. Only a very small portion is African Black, bet you didn't know that. Further, he is not descendant from slaves but slave owners.

So while your busy hurling absurd and unfounded accusations around in an attempt to obfuscate the truth you'd better not forget your hero in the White House as well.

And just so we're clear, it still doesn't change the fact that he's an alarmist. Every time he wants to push something through before the People have a chance to think about it, Obama pushes the panic button espousing death, doom and destruction if America doesn't comply right away.

How you gleaned racism from that I'll never know but then no one really could ever understand the thinking paradigm of the left.

        Probably white. Am I right?

I am white, I am black, I am yellow and red. I come from the North, South, East and West. I am what some are, few appreciate and others hate. I am an American and the color of my skin doesn't matter because my Declaration of Independence says it doesn't matter. My heritage is shared with the likes of Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln and M.L.King. My freedoms and liberties paid for in the courage, sacrifice, sweat and blood of those before me. The only colors I proudly claim are red, white and blue and it is to those colors and the uncompromising principals it stands for, that I have pledged my unyeilding allegiance.

Washington stinks. It is rife with greed and corruption from personal agendas, special interests and lobbyists, it doesn't matter the party. The hero everyone said was going to change things and make it all better is leading this country into bankruptcy with massive spending and entitlement programs. Making us and our children and our childrens children obligated debitors to countries that hate America and would love to see it destroyed.

        What color am I?

You'd better be far more worried about what color flag your children will be pledging their allegiance to.

Working class American The funny part of this is that HE, the King himself printed us into oblivion with HIS spending spree, and now he is worried about “devastating the U S economy”?

Gee, he is so considerate of the people that he is looking at how much money insurance companies are charging us, I for one am glad he is keeping an eye on how much spending Washington is doing.

A healthcare bill without a public option and public choice will be a joke not reform and will not be change I can believe in.

I am still waiting for President Obama to publicly demand a the public option and for Democrats to push it through.

You are looking at one of the reasons that Obama is one of our better Presidents. He isnt haughty enough to need five new state of the art helicopters. The old fleet is doing just fine, thank you. McCain's helicopter challenge was just showboating. Bush on the other hand would have insisted on them and would have rush ordered that new limo for himself had it been in his power. That's an indication of how badly Bush fell short as an economic Neocon.

As for the healthcare bill, it is what it is now. I think the Dems are finally waking up to the fact they have their solid majorities and reconciliation tactics on their side. There will be a public option!

Remember this spring Mr. Obama took his family to N.Y. for a dinner, with 5 helicopers, 2 airforce ones and 35,000 US Marines, all for showing his daughter what a great man he was. He is no longer as the American people are finally waking up to what a blunder head he has been so far. He has no idea what a budget is or how to plan on net income from working people. Oops I forgot he does not want working people as they are educated and will throw him out of office in 2012.

Ok, let me tell you people, what I think should happen. What I say is valid because I have done extensive research on the topic of Universal Healthcare.

            1. Universal Healthcare is the way to go. America spends several times more money than any other country on its inefficient system of getting people proper healthcare. In all other countries people do not have to worry about getting medical care. Healthcare should not be a priviledge to only the people who can afford it. All things that are needed for people to survive is a right not a priviledge.

The republicans keep saying "Oh the government is taking away all our rights." You know what my response is, which rights are you talking about. The rights to not have a job, to be poor, and to not have any healthcare coverage? This is obsurd.

The more they comprimise with the Republicans, the worse the universal healthcare will get. They will end up creating loopholes. Now is the time for healthcare. The longer they wait the more people will loose coverage, and people will be dying from treatable illnesses.

The opponents of the public option say that Oh, Our healthcare is the number one baby! People come from other countries here for healthcare. Oh really? Then why does the World healthcare association have us ranking behind all other top superpowers, whether it is infant mortality, alzeheimers survival, etc. The only illness we do not lack behind in is cancer, and that is because we pour 20 times more money into it than any other country. Do you think the average citizen from another country comes here to get healthcare. I don't think so! It's pretty obvious that the richest people from other countries who are not too sick come here to splurge and spend tons of money for healthcare because they do not know what else to do.

NOW IS THE TIME FOR HEALTHCARE, STOP LETTING THE INSURANCE COMPANIES RUN OUR LIVES!!!

GOP operatives continue to dishonestly and deceptively spout that they cannot support a public option because they want to keep costs down for the American people! Really? But they know that only a public option can bring about true reform and control the “out of control” medical costs and premiums crippling people and jobs, making it harder and harder to get by. One has to think ahead. If you happen to lose your job today or tomorrow and we don't have health care reform, who will pay you and your family's health care bills.

The reason that GOP always say Gov’t is the problem is because when you have men/women in power who do Nothing but say no or complain, like the GOP — goverment is a problem! And so it is a self-fulliling prophecy. As long as the GOP are in power or in control, the goverment will be a do nothing, problematic government, which will do nothing for Average Americans. We must remember, this is Bush & the GOP’s recession. They had the power for 8 years and did nothing to uplift this country, only to rape it from Main Street, to add it to Wall Street. The GOP does not even like to raise the Minimum Wage! They care nothing if you are making it. People we must wake up now! Because look around, assess the United States’ situation that we are in and realize over the last 10 years of GOP rule, what have they done for you lately? Or this country? And ask yourself this, if we let them get power again, how much more further will this country be destroyed until the United States will no longer be. That is a very frightening thought

If this thing is so great why has Obama NOT done what he said he was going to do, “keep it open and transparent” and “shown on television” for all to see?

I don’t think any of them on either side have a plan worth spitting on; the people are going to get stuck in the end just like they always do no matter which way they go.

Anytime the government gets involved the tax payer is the ones who pay.
