Neb. intercepts OU's Jones 5 times in 10-3 win

LINCOLN — Matt O'Hanlon had three of Nebraska's five interceptions against Landry Jones and the Cornhuskers squeezed enough production out of their struggling offense to upset No. 20 Oklahoma 10-3 on Saturday night.

The Sooners (5-4, 3-2 Big 12) failed to score a touchdown for the first time since a 29-0 loss to Texas A&M in 1998.

The Cornhuskers (6-3, 3-2) won despite getting just seven first downs and 180 total yards. They were able to get a yard when they really needed it, after Prince Amukamara returned an interception to the OU 1 in the second quarter. Zac Lee threw a short pass to Ryan Hill for Nebraska's fourth offensive TD in four games.

Oklahoma's last two possessions ended on interceptions, including O'Hanlon's third, which he grabbed at the Nebraska 7 with 27 seconds left.

O'Hanlon ran back his first interception 30 yards to set up Alex Henery's 28-yard field goal.

Roy Helu Jr. ran for 138 yards on 20 carries for Nebraska, which won for the first time in five meetings against Oklahoma since 2001.

After Lee took a knee to end the game, Helu and a band of teammates dashed to the end zone stands to do their own version of the "Lambeau Leap" to celebrate with fans.

The Cornhuskers moved to within a half-game of first-place Kansas State in the Big 12 North race.

The defenses controlled the game as expected.

Jones, who completed his last 14 passes against Kansas State a week earlier, missed on 10 of his first 12 and finished 26 of 58 for 245 yards. Ryan Broyles caught eight balls for 74 yards.

Oklahoma turned the ball over on downs three times inside the Nebraska 25. Twice the Sooners were unable to convert fourth-and-1s at the 20, including one messed up by a false-start penalty on left tackle Trent Williams.

O'Hanlon dropped what looked to be a sure interception on the play before he picked off Jones to finish off the Sooners. O'Hanlon flung the ball into the air, drawing an excessive celebration penalty, and then the Huskers ran out the last few seconds.

Nebraska led 7-3 at half and had made only one first down.

Quarterback Cody Green, who made his first start in last week's 20-10 win at Baylor, led the Huskers' first five possessions. With the freshman in charge, the Huskers generated no first downs and 19 total yards.

Lee replaced Green after Amukamara's interception and connected with Hill for the touchdown on his first pass.

Nebraska was in position to add to the lead after Helu broke a 63-yard run to the OU 11. Two plays later, Lee's option pitch to Helu was too high, and Gerald McCoy recovered for the Sooners.

Oklahoma missed out on three scoring chances before Tress Way kicked a 28-yard field goal with 24 seconds left the half.

Way missed from 46 yards and had his 45-yard attempt blocked by Ndamukong Suh, and Nebraska came up with a big stop when nickel back Eric Hagg stuffed DeMarco Murray for a 2-yard loss on fourth-and-1 from the Huskers 20.

Henery had his streak of 25 straight field goals made inside 50 yards end when he missed from 43 yards in the fourth quarter.

Great job Huskers .. the defense looked awesome! That last 41 seconds was the longest 41 seconds I can ever remember. I kept having to remind myself to breathe to keep from turning blue and passing out! LOL It's a bummer to sit alone in your living room and have no one to share the excitement with during such an intense game so my dogs became used to Mama going berserk tonight. I did have my hubby and brother on text message though! Oklahoma is a class act and a tough competitor so we can't take anything away from them. Their defense played well too!

I should have been working tonight but there was no way I was getting anything done so guess I'll have to make up for it tomorrow during the Nascar Sprint Cup race (damn! LOL).

As a native of SW Iowa, I was sad to see the Iowa Hawkeyes go down today. :( That was a tough loss for the team.

WTG Huskers! Go Big Red!!

Oklahoma is my favorite rival, I used to think that they were the Evil Empire but these days I love it when we get to play them, any win against Oklahoma is a worthy win.

Blayde, mine too! I remember my childhood days (60s & early 70s) of having the game on during Thanksgiving get-togethers. With being a native Iowan, .. oh my, the 'debates' between the Iowans and Nebraskans. LOL Today, as a fan of both teams, I look back on it and smile .. every time!

HuskerFan, Long live both teams, when Nebraska was down and Oklahoma was up I rooted for Oklahoma, we may be in the big 12 now but Oklahoma and Nebraska were the Kings of the Big 8.

Yes in deed! I grew up in the 80's and idolized Nebraska and still do to this day. I remember those Thanksgiving games and my dad getting into it with the in-laws because they were Oklahoma fans.

Gotta love it!

notalib-1275801 ... the ribbing back and forth seems to be a common Thanksgiving dish in this area. It's always great to look back on our memories. I come to realize that nothing has changed (in regards to the passion of the fans) .. we are just the ones doing the arguing as our kids/grandkids look on. LOL Except, the game is no longer a Thanksgiving tradition. :( Another fond memory I have is the the statement that starts with "Holy, Moly"~ anyone who is a Husker fan knows that one! LOL

I think the only thing that irks me is when fans boo or condemn the team and/or coaching. This really sets me off. If they were so much of an expert they would be coaching on the field instead of sitting in the stands or in their recliners with a beer in their hand. Many fans seem to think the game defines who they are. They also seem to forget that the kids on the field are just that .. kids out of high school learning the ropes. They have family and friends too who I'm sure it hurts to hear the boos or hateful remarks. I wonder how they would feel if it was their son out there. I'm sure it would be a whole different picture.

Anyway, it's always great to catch up with other Husker fans or those in (or from) the general area so feel free to add me to your friend or watch list. Have a great day!

Husker88Fan,

yep I know exactly what you mean. My brother lives in Denver, so when CU and Nebraska play in Boulder I will usually fly down and go to the game with my brother. I must tell you that the CU fans are the biggest trash talking, fight starting fans I have ever run across. After the game we were walking back to our car when for no reason at all, CU fans were driving past us calling us all kinds of vile names, even after we lost the game!!!! The whole game we were forced to sit with a bunch of CU fans that were drunk yelling out crude remarks to Husker players, and it wasn't even noon yet!!!!

I never blame the players because like you said they are just kids learning the ropes. Sometimes the players are at fault, but for the most part the coaches are the ones to blame, including the recruiters.

I love the Nebraska spirit which spreads to the fans. Nebraska players are trained to be professional and to avoid losing focus when their opponents trash talk or get personal, which is also a big part of Nebraska's fan base.

It will be interesting these next to weeks when we go up against both Kansas teams.

Have a good day too my friend!

notalib .. I was honored to receive your friend invite. Thanks and it's been accepted. :)

Yes, I love that Nebraska spirit too. It seems like the one thing that can bring a whole state together even under the most stressful of times. I've seen this more than once.

I have seen, and heard, that about Colorado many times before too. I recall an incident a few years ago where the players were attacked as they exited the plane upon arrival. That incident and 2 others, over the years, have always stood out with me. The other two being: Husker Fans' car tires were slashed on a street during a Big 12 conference game and the other was the hatefulness of a college, fan base and community during a pre-season game ~ even the concession workers had temp tattoos and t-shirts the said F*** Nebraska. Not cool, more so (IMO) since the games were invitational. Public apologies were issued but it sure didn't help the fans recoup the experience and money spent for going down there. You just can't take back stupid!

I am always proud of the way Husker fans treat the opposing teams and fans. If one of ours gets out of line someone will call them on their behavior, and if that fails, see to it the situation it is handled (removing them from the stadium).

Texas does seem to be like Nebraska and Oklahoma, I often have students with Longhorn shirts on here in my Lincoln, Nebraska classroom. What the heck, I'll root for Texas too. There is one school in the big 12, that I have a hard time rooting for, but I won't mention their name.

Blayde, Good morning! Yup, there are a couple of teams that I find myself having a hard time supporting too. Especially at Bowl time when we're all in it together. But, in the end, I come around to .. well they are the Big 12, go Big 12! This way I don't have to root for them. LOL

Well off to work I go. :( Have a great day!

I still swell with pride when I remember a letter to the editor in the Lincoln Journal in 1991. The previous Saturday, Washington had come to town and beaten Nebraska with a fourth quarter rally. The letter to the editor was from a Washington fan who had been at the game. The writer said he was absolutely stunned when the Nebraska fans in the southeast corner of the stadium applauded and cheered as the Washington team left the field after the game. He said he was surprised to see that kind of sportsmanship was still present in college football. That is the stuff that keeps me a Big Red fan! I now live in Tacoma, Washington and sincerely hope the Nebraska fans still applaud the opponents, win or lose.

Bill Fuller .. I have not been to a game at Memorial Stadium since the season before last but at the games I did attend I'm pleased to inform you .. yes, Husker fans were still applauding the opponents, win or lose. I believe this is a great source of pride for every Husker fan. It's also evident, at the stadium, that if a fan gets out of line, other fans are eager to settle, or remove, the problem. Feel free to add me to your friend, and/or watch, list. Have a super day!

Thanks, Husker88Fan. Being just a hitch hiker on the information superhighway, I'm not sure I did it right but I attempted to add you as a Newsvine friend. As a 1969 Nebraska alum, I wonder if I'm the oldest in this group. (Same to ya with the "super day" wish!)

You are most welcome Bill, we are all hitch-hikers on the super-highway aren't we!?! Yup, you did the friend thingy right, I received your invite and gladly accepted with honor. It's always nice to connect with other Husker fans where-ever they are. Actually, I enjoy connecting with any college football fans. College football is something experienced with much more passion than, in my opinion, the NFL and that's always a pleasure to watch. Thanks, my day is going well but it's time for my "Nascar"'s quiet time so we're off for a short nap. The pleasures of working from home. LOL
