Sosa’s skin undergoing noticeable color change

advertisement

The ghost of Sammy Sosa is upon us.

The former Cubs slugger, recently photographed during an appearance at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, is drawing attention for his severely lightened complexion.

In addition, he appears to be wearing green contact lenses — a change from his natural brown.

The photo shows Sosa on the left at a May 2009 People Magazine event. The right is Sosa, who retired in 2007 with 609 career homers, earlier this week in Las Vegas for the Latin Grammys.

The cause of Sosa's skin condition is reportedly because of a skin rejuvenation process he has been undergoing, according to the Chicago Tribune.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Dang... unless he had MJ's condition (vitiligo), he should get his money back.

What the heck is wrong with being black and handsome?

I just don't get it.

The link below explains about Sammy Sosa and the majority of people in the Dominican Republic when it comes to skin color. Personally I'm outraged by his actions. When children admire a public figure I believe they have some responsibility to their fans. Teaching them to hate themselves because they are Black or Brown isn't something that should be taught to any child. IMO that's what the self hating Sammy Sosa has done.

I'm not sure I feel outrage so much as sadness... and bewilderment. We are what we are; no one needs to make such ridiculous changes as this. Regardless of Sosa's motives, he really should have known better. He was idolized by baseball fans for who he was; how he looked was irrelevant. That he suddenly makes appearance his be-all and end-all makes his achievements irrelevant.

Um, any dude who wants to bleach his hide can do that. Not just any dude can be a baseball star.

And there are a lot of hunky black dudes out there (BTW: I am white). I may be too fossilized to do anything about it, but I sure as heck ain't too old to drool and pant a little...

So, back to square one: I still don't get it.

As a Black man who see many young Black and Latino boys who look up to sports figures I am outraged from that aspect of Sammy's actions. Many young Black and Hispanic children as sad as it is face racism by age 9 ( I recently read ),the last thing they should be taught or shown that having dark skin is something to hate or be ashamed of as Sammy Sosa is demonstrating. He does have the right to dye his face purple if he choose to but he is a role model whether he likes it or not.Imagine a dark skin father having to explain to his dark skinned son why Sammy Sosa"made himself White". Being a dark skinned (Wesley Snipes Black man) I know how having darker skin can be problematic for many of us and others dealing with us. I thank god my parents (I'm 51 now) raised me to have self-esteem, self worth and respect.

bitemore the link I provided spells it out rather well.

      Mr Cholly,

The article you posted was educational for me, I don't doubt what the article says as being true it just seems that after leading such a public life Sammy can't think he is kidding anyone. Are we supposed to see him all bleached with green eyes, and think... Hmmm, I always thought he was black I guess I was mistaken?

Although Michael Jackson's life was very sad, maybe he will be kind of a reverse role-model for those who will go to the extreme to hide their color and racial traits.

Also, the election of Obama and success of other blacks in sports, business and politics seems like it would help. It is one thing to read about an issue, but honestly I don't have much in my personal experience to help me really "get it".

You said you are angry, but what do you think work towards a solution...? Or does this just take time (generations?) to work through our society? Like sexism, people aren't used to woman having power, position and I feel it is just going to take time for everyone to get used to the changes..

As a blonde, white person from Idaho, I try to avoid anything close to a race topic for fear of revealing my ignorance and being accused of being a skinhead. :) Be gentle if I have been insensitive. I found myself curious and pained by the idea off people "bleaching" themselves.

You said you are angry, but what do you think work towards a solution...?

Unfortunately nothing will solve it, yes lack of education plays the pivotal role but we're also talking about a completely different culture who pride themselves on denying their history, African roots and skin color .The thing that angers me is that as a American Black man I remember how long it took for Black folks to embrace and be proud of being Black in America. Not too long ago the late James Brown wrote and sang the song "Say it Loud,I'm Black and I'm proud helping to give Blacks world wide the esteem to love themselves for who they are especially children. As you know that's where it all begins. Now we have allowed someone from a culture tell our Black children that you may have fame and fortune but you still won't be happy or accepted unless you have White Skin. That's insulting and ignorance at it's worse.

Some things some groups may wish to bring with them when they immigrate into America must rejected, IMO hating oneself is one of them. I have no idea if Mr.Sosa has been asked about this or not, but he should be asked what message is he sending Black and Brown children especially those in the Dominican Republic who look up to him.

Be gentle if I have been insensitive.

You have not been insensitive at all. FYI The autopsy report confirmed that Michael Jackson indeed have vitiliago disease.

There is something odd in each of these pictures. The one on the left looks like that of a white man disguised as black, and vice versa for the one on the right.

I am and will always be a Sammy Sosa fan. Not because of all the home runs he hit or the games he won but for the joy he always expressed when playing baseball. I am sorry he feels that being dark skinned is something he would rather live without. I agree that he is a role model for his fellow countrymen and for many individuals of color throughout the world. It is a shame that this feeling of inadequacy still exists in this world today. I like Indepvoter was hesitant to say anything on this topic but we need to let Sammy and all those who feel the same as he does, know that we care about him regardless of the color of his skin.

From what I have noticed from Sosa's is that he is one of the hispanics that show more pride in his heritage!

Well if you're not Black or a person of color with kids

That what the parents are there for!? To answer the questions arise about why he did that! He says it is rejuvenation! Only he and the doctor know for sure.
