Lawmaker: Hasan had communications with Pakistan

advertisement

WASHINGTON — The Army psychiatrist charged with killing 13 people in a shooting spree at Fort Hood made or accepted wire transfers with Pakistan, a country wracked by Muslim extremist violence, a Republican congressman said Friday.

Texas Rep. Michael McCaul, the ranking GOP member of the House Homeland Security Intelligence Subcommittee, said people outside the intelligence community with direct knowledge of the transfers also told him Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan also had communications with Pakistan.

"He may have friends or relatives or whatever and this could be totally (innocent)," McCaul said in a telephone interview. "But if he is wiring money to Pakistan, that could be terrorist financing. If he was receiving money from Pakistan, that is more significant."

McCaul said he does not know the direction of the transfers and communications, only that they passed between Hasan and Pakistan. He said the lack of additional information is why Congress should launch an investigation.

Hasan, 39, was charged Thursday with 13 counts of premeditated murder in a military court, and Army investigators have said he is the only suspect in the case and could face additional charges. His attorney, John Galligan, has said prosecutors have not yet told him whether they plan to seek the death penalty.

A pair of civilian police officers responding to last week's attack, in which 43 people were also injured, including 34 with gunshot wounds, shot Hasan four times. Recovering in the intensive care unit at San Antonio's Brooke Army Medical Center, Hasan has told his attorney he has no feeling in his legs and extreme pain in his hands.

Galligan said doctors have told Hasan he may be permanently paralyzed from the waist down. He called his client's medical condition "extremely serious" and said Hasan didn't flinch when Galligan touched his leg during a meeting Thursday, when one of Hasan's relatives was able to see him for the first time since he was hospitalized.

Hospital spokesman Dewey Mitchell said he could not confirm whether Hasan was paralyzed, since Hasan has directed hospital officials not to release any information about his condition or injuries.

The question of how Hasan spent his Army salary stems from the apparently frugal lifestyle he lived both in the small city of Killeen, Texas, outside of Fort Hood, and in the Washington, D.C., suburbs when stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In Texas, he lived in a rundown apartment that cost $350 a month and drove a 2006 Honda.

As an Army major with more than 12 years of service, Hasan earns just over $92,000 a year in basic pay and housing and food allowances, according to pay tables from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Hasan's gross monthly salary is $6,325.50 a month, or $75,906 annually. He also gets $1,128 a month for a housing allowance and $223 a month for meals, which adds up to another $16,212 a year.

Military psychiatrists may also receive as much as $20,000 a year in incentive pay, according to the tables. But to get the bonus, they must meet certain requirements, such as agreeing to remain on active duty for at least one year after accepting the award. Hasan's Army records are sealed due to the ongoing investigation, and it isn't clear if he was eligible for the bonus or agreed to the conditions.

President Barack Obama has ordered a review of all intelligence related to Hasan and whether the information was properly shared and acted upon within government agencies. Several members of Congress, particularly Michigan Rep. Peter Hoekstra, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, have also called for a full examination of what agencies knew about Hasan's contacts with a radical Muslim cleric in Yemen and others of concern to the U.S.

Hoekstra confirmed this week that government officials knew about 10 to 20 e-mails between Hasan and the radical imam, beginning in December 2008.

A joint terrorism task force overseen by the FBI learned late last year of Hasan's repeated contact with the cleric, who encouraged Muslims to kill U.S. troops in Iraq. The FBI said the task force did not refer early information about Hasan to superiors because it concluded he wasn't linked to terrorism.

I wish them all well.

But what is this even supposed to mean?

"I'm Irish. It hit the bone and bounced out," Foster, of Ogden, Utah, said

Is he saying Irish people have rubbery bones? Is he implying he's not American, but Irish? Is he saying the Irish are tougher than others, which is why they died?

Not sure why that comment was even in there.

I just think he meant it as he's a tough guy. I wouldn't read that much into it.

    I find this more "intriguing".

Sen. Joe Lieberman said Sunday he would begin an investigation into what the Army should have known about Hasan.

Really? Joe Lieberman? This guy is trying really hard to get all the free campaign publicity he can!!

I am sure if it was Arab who stated he was an Arab, these same people would try to call him an extremist...He remark was inappropiate and did not fit the circumstances...He should have stated...We are "Americans" and we will resolve, which is fitting the circumstances but of course you don't see anything wrong with his statement. The military is for Americans united no matter the race/ethnic group or religion.

Afterall, how tough could irish catholic be with Britain foot up the hinds for centuries.

kelli02 - My comment would be the same no matter who the person is, because his response is a very human one.

My question to you would be are you presuming the person to be Catholic because he is Irish? He does come from Utah where there are a high percentage of Mormon, not that I think he is Mormon - the article does not say.

OBAMA-FAN - Kind of an interesting comment coming from Joe considering that religions teach; God first, country second, family last.

To you his comment is a human one, I sure others would have stated "American" because it is unifying and fits the situation.

I don't care what religion he is and I did not state a religion for him so what is your point? The article did not state his religion neither did I...

NPR RADIO Portrayed this as far more serious evasions by the military:

I have been avoiding right wing, racist, anti Muslim tracts, seeds like this because I felt there was not enough information to make a judgment. Now, that I have heard the latest, a 8:OO pm. Wednesday night, I can safely say what I suspected all along, that the right wing scapegoaters were just too quick on their racism, whether it is American yahoos, or Zionist Jews/Christians who have an axe to grind against Muslims.

Here is the latest. It was admitted for the first time tonight, by the Army, that there were people within his profession, in social counseling, and other related fields, that they considered the shooter "psychotic", CAPABLE OF SHOOTING HIS CO WORKERS OR CO SOLDIERS. The new revelations also said the professionals admitted that because of his rank and attempt to get his Master Degree, that it would be too difficult to remove him and therefore only moved him around.

What this clearly means is that the MILITARY, professionals, who were in control, were typical corporate, class appeasing, hierarchical, deformed and servile elites appeasing rank, power, and elite relations, over their professional suspicions. What makes this even more criminal, corrupt, is that the MILTARY, did not take into account his history when they were bullying him into service into Afghanistan, because as a friend of mine said the "JOHN WAYNE" MILITARY thugs, wanted to prove to everyone that they can demand slavery of "psychotic" soldiers, no matter how sick they are.

My friend also, who has many friend from the Vietnam period, pointed out that fragging soldiers, killing officers, was not considered only a "psychotic" moment, but was wide spread in Vietnam, by rational soldiers, who knew that officers were willing to throw their lives away, based on their own corrupt careers, and took matters into their hands. In other words it was a political act, aimed at "JOHN WAYNE", Military thugs who were not listening to their grunts, just as they were not listening to ACTUAL PSYCHOTICS, because of their typical careerism, servility to class/imperial power.

What this ultimately means is that the military is far more responsible for the murders of soldiers, if the shooter, who happened to be Muslim, was having a meltdown, and the hierarchy, officers did nothing. THINK ABOUT THAT, WHEN YOUR RACISM, ANTI MUSLIM TIRADES ARE USED TO ATTACK OBAMA, OR ALL MUSLIMS.

Yes, apparently, this guy has been on the military's radar for more than two years.

Maybe gov't is NOT best to run our health care, since the military is government, and look at the messes they keep making.

But some doctors and staff were concerned that their unfamiliarity with the Muslim faith would lead them to unfairly single out Hasan's behavior, the official said.

In other words, if Hasan had been a White male, then he would not have been permitted to continue and then shoot his fellow soldiers.

So isn't is about time that minorities have the same basic standards as Caucasians?

More information is coming out as to why previous warnings were ignored:

So why didn't officials act on their concerns and seek to remove Hasan from his duties, or at least order him to receive a mental health evaluation?

For one thing, Walter Reed and most medical institutions have a cumbersome and lengthy process for expelling doctors, involving hearings and potential legal battles. As a result, sources say, key decision-makers decided it would be too difficult, if not unfeasible, to put Hasan on probation and possibly expel him from the program.

Second, some of Hasan's supervisors and instructors had told colleagues that they repeatedly bent over backward to support and encourage him, because they didn't have clear evidence that he was unstable, and they worried they might be "discriminating" against Hasan because of his seemingly extremist Islamic beliefs.
