Abortion rights backers request talks with Obama

WASHINGTON — Abortion rights supporters in Congress are asking President Barack Obama for a meeting next week on abortion restrictions included in the House health care bill.

Leaders of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus have written to Obama calling the provisions an unprecedented restriction of women's access to health insurance coverage for abortion services.

Ninety lawmakers signed the letter requesting talks with the president.

The House-passed legislation would bar a new government-run insurance plan from covering abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. It prohibits any health plan that receives federal subsidies in a new insurance marketplace from offering abortion coverage.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I truly believe that it is time for some members of congress to remind themselves that we are a democracy not a theocracy. Even though they seem to forget this fact at times, there is suppose to be a separation of church and state in the United States.

For some members of congress to try to use health care reform as a tool to further restrict women's access to medically legal procedures is unacceptable.

The Hyde amendment which has been in effect for approximately 40 years prohibits the use of federal dollars for abortions. To attempt further restriction under the guise of health care reform is a travesty.

I'm male and I happen to think my opinion should carry NO weight in the abortion debate....except in a personal conversation with my wife.

...............but I do agree 100% with MikeBravo's post:
