LONDON — British officials say Prime Minister Gordon Brown will apologize to thousands of British children who were shipped to new lives overseas, where many say they suffered neglect and abuse.
Thousands of poor British children were sent to Australia, Canada and other former colonies under the Child Migrants Program, which ended in the 1960s. Many ended up in institutions or as farm laborers.
Brown's office confirmed Sunday officials would consult with representatives of the surviving children before making an apology next year.
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will apologize Monday for his country's role in the program. Rudd also will apologize for the mistreatment of the "forgotten Australians," children who suffered in state care during the last century.
An apology is not enough, this was monstrous, these children were taken forcibly from their parents, seperated from their siblings and sent to the other side of the world to be physically and sexually abused and literally enslaved.
Those decendants of the people who did this are still sitting in the house of parliament and the house of lords, they should be named and shamed and they made to pay compensation to these children. Compensation should not come from the public purse but from those who did the harm and their decendants.
I watched grown men and women weeping while they remembered the things that were done to them by our government, the same people who use our money to clear out their moats and build duck houses. Their greed and arrogance is beyond comprehension.
Time for justice, visited upon the children of those who did the harm.
