Scoop: Give thanks for the end of ‘Jon & Kate’

The reality TV tale about raising eight children turns into a tabloid nightmare for the couple from Pennsylvania.

— Thanksgiving celebrations coincide with a winding down of the pop-culture year. Here are three things to be thankful for as you carve turkeys and channel surf among parades, dog shows and football.

The end of Jon and Kate
The series finale of “Jon & Kate Plus Eight” airs Nov. 23, and on the episode, the couple will sit together for interviews one last time.

According to a TLC source, the Gosselins will “provide new insights on their recent life events and what the series has meant through the ups and downs of the last several years. How will they each respond to the uncertainty of the future?”

The future remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: If Jon and Kate are no longer together, their power to interest the public is greatly diminished. They’ll be forced to create media images as individuals and not as a collective tour de force of bad behavior, and they’re going to be judged in a much harsher light.

Let's hope that this means navigating the new phases of their careers more carefully, and limiting the “Plus Eight’s” exposure to the cameras.

The end of the sex tape
I feel like the needle really moved this week when Pam Anderson admitted to having “the talk” with her 11- and 12-year-old sons.

This wasn’t a birds-and-bees talk — this was the “most of the world has seen mommy and daddy have sex because we, like many other celebrities, recorded it, and then it sort of got passed around the Internet” talk.

Let's hope this full-circle moment won't just be just fodder for the kids’ eventual therapy, can serve as a larger lesson in celebrity sex-tape accountability. This year alone, images of Rihanna, Carrie Prejean, and Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart have all hit the Internet, and there are probably a few I’m missing.

It’s a way to get famous, but not something you ever want to talk to your tweens about some day. Resist the record button.

The return of the comedy
“House,” “Lost,” I loved you so, but I’m so glad there are some new acts at this rodeo. There’s been a lot of bad news this fall, and much as your conflict and brooding appealed to me, it’s really good to have some comedies that make us laugh again.

Sure, there’s laughing in plenty of reality shows, but it's more of the laughing at and not with variety.

“Modern Family” and “Glee” are new bright lights in the week, and this season of “The Office” seems to have a new spring in its step. Thanks, writers.

Full ‘Moon’ at the movies
No-brainer alert: “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” will be No. 1 this weekend.

The only question out there is how much the film will make — some are predicting an opening that beats out “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.” That blockbuster scooped up $158 million when it first hit theaters in July, although that was over a five-day, not three-day period.

All this is bad news for Sandra Bullock, who returns to the big screen for the third time in five months with her starring role in “The Blind Side.” Maybe Oscar buzz for her role will offset the expected box-office buzzkill.

Scoop will return Nov. 30. Have a fantastic Thanksgiving!

What's Wrong With Hazlett's Column Today.

1. Jon&Kate. You are SO shallow, Hazlett, even EYE can't believe what I'm reading at times. Your capriciousness makes my head spin. You headline this CRAP of a column "Give Thanks for the End of Jon & Kate" but I'm guessing you're involved in serious bereavement. GET over it. GOD Hazlett - you report every seemingly breathless quote from TLC.

"provide new insights on their recent life events and what the series has meant through the ups and downs of the last several years. How will they each respond to the uncertainty of the future?”

Then YOU opine

The future remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: If Jon and Kate are no longer together, their power to interest the public is greatly diminished.

OMG - how WILL we ever get through another day? I mean who GIVES a rat's ass? Raise your hands everybody! See? But you take the cake with the next item -

2. Pam Anderson's Sex Tape. I smell something Hazlett - did your brain fart? AYFKMWTC (Are You Freaking Kidding Me With This Crap)??? Sex tapes? You advise not to hit the record button. I'm advising you not to hit the power-on button on your computer. Both have the same outcome.

3. The Return of Comedy (Except on NBC). Nice try, Hazlett. NBC is like 24th in ratings among 20 networks. Hard to do, but NBC has managed to do it. Leno is having is ass handed to him five nights a week by every local cable access channel in the country, no? I told you Medium would clean your clock when it moved from NBC to CBS. You better hope Comcast completes its' purchase of NBC/Universal. The way I see it, it's your only hope of hanging on to your job. God PLEASE fire Miss Priss-insky and Boring Joe. Hey, THEN you could appear on MSNBC in the morning again!

Alright Hazlett - it's time. Will I, will I, will I??? YES I WILL! You get an "F" for the effort that is today's column. Hey I know, why don't you report on web-based shows? Check this one out - Between Two Ferns with Charlize Theron (and Jon Hamm - we KNOW you like him - Kimmel, et. al.). Check it out here.

BRING ME THE HEAD OF THE NY DAILY NEWS FOR REPORTING THAT CHRIS BROWN IS STRUGGLING TO FILL EVEN SMALL VENUES FOR HIS COMEBACK. WhoTF CARES?

I could EAT pen and paper and PUKE a better column.

Randy from Maine.

well someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed!

while i didn't learn anything new with this article, it is probably not her choice to write such meaningless nonsense. It is a paying job that the bosses want, for some reason. Hey, i'll take that job. I'm sure she can write better stories if the opprotunity presented itself to her. so, don't read her articles. Easy fix!

Have a Great day!

It just shows how uninformed Hazlett is within the media. There will NOT be a reunion between Jon and Kate on the last show. That was a RUMOR. Get it Hazlett a rumor, do you even know what that means? That rumor was started about a week ago and TLC responded saying the rumors were false and there will be no reunion with Jon and Kate together. You better find new sources girl. I don't think you should judge either one of the Gosselins since you are apparently ill informed. Don't pull Kate Gosselin into your mind set that she behaved badly. ALL couples fight, all couples bicker, it's just in this case maybe because TLC could raise the ratings in the show by editing it to show Kate in a bad light while editing out Jon's bad behavior. Was that fair to Kate? No it wasn't but it's about business and ratings after all. As we have all seen for months now Jon Gosselin isn't a very nice person and just maybe Kate had a reason to be short tempered with him. As they say a leopard doesn't change it's spots and maybe the Jon Gosselin everyone sees not is the real Jon not the nice guy he pretended to be in front of the cameras. Interesting too that the media never picked up on Jon's bad behavior towards Kate on the show, his smart remarks to her and the nasty looks behind her back but oh it's about a good story for the media if they only make one person look like a bully doesn't it? After all it's about drama for the media and if they showed both sides it wouldn't make a good story now would it? Kate did hint one day that the Jon seen on the TLC cameras wasn't the same Jon when the cameras were off. Well it looks like she was right because for months now we've been seeing the real guy and he isn't a nice guy that's for sure.

Kate as hard as it's probably been for her has only said her side of the story once in one of the final episodes and even then she was careful to not outright bash the guy although he certainly deserves it but Kate is thinking about their children and she didn't want them to see her being mean to their daddy one day when they can see all this. She did make an appearance on Larry King and once again she wouldn't bash Jon. The other appearances were guest stints on shows and when asked about the failing marriage she clearly didn't want to talk about it and tried to steer away from the subject. Kate has been promoting her book so of course she has appeared in the media but that's required of any writer by a publishing company. Jon on the other hand has made appearances nearly EVERY DAY on several media shows rudely bashing his wife left and right and lately he has even started bashing his OWN CHILDREN. Nice guy. No one will be happier than Kate when the divorce is final and hopefully the paps will leave her and the children alone. Jon admitted publicly that he sends the paps after her because as he says it irritates her. On Jon's custody days he spends most of it in the front yard in full view of the media and paps so he can sell photos of himself and film of them all to the paps and media. There was even a video of Jon going along the fence line collecting money from from the paps and media for his "cooperation". Hopefully for Kate and the children the media storm will end once the divorce is final but sadly that's in doubt because it looks like Jon Gosselin is going to try and make a CAREER out of bashing his wife in public. Jon you aren't Joan Rivers.

So Hazlett try and get your facts straight BEFORE you write an article and there is no need to add to the media drama of this very sad and heartbreaking situation.

here's the deal. Jon is a cheater. Kate is a nag.

        Both are abuse.

No offense to wymmynkind or whatever.. because i'm a woman, but if i were jon, i wouldn't have cheated. I would have kicked her ass out long ago and told her to come back after she learned how to shut up.

        But, unfortunately, they're both morons.

It will be interesting to see how that poor litter of kids turns out...

Jon i dont blame for going crazy as his life turned upside down in the middle of his life unexpectedly, and every one i know that happenned to acted a little unstable at first. Boycott tlc till they drop their lawsuits . I just want to never see or here from this family again, but the balls on tlc to sue after making millions of the guys kids, jeez. They made their profit, they should just let go since they tore the family apart. BOYCOTT TLC BOYCOTT TLC

Sully 0420...I agree with you. TLC has bled this family dry and used them for every opt,,,in the name of ratings with no regards to what they did to this family.

Very sad and shame on TLC for exploiting them in the manner they are choosing to do.

Regardless of why Jon chose to stop the show, IMO is was the best thing for the children. Hopefully they can now live a normal life.

interesting you have two posts but in neither of them did you wish the kids good luck - all you talked about was "big paychecks and hope Kate gets to pursue her agenda of being on tv".

where does the "well beiing of the kids come into play"?

isn't it possible "ending this show" will be the best thing that ever happened to the kids?

Bringing the kids back would be beating a dead horse! ENOUGH! I'm sure there is plenty of money in their trust to keep the kids going for a long time. Let them lead normal lives!!!! As for Kate having a talk show, FORGET IT!!!! I think she has absolutely nothing to offer!! Let her get a job (not nursing, please) that will support her. No problem if she gives up the luxuries! Same for Jon. Get a real job, make a life for yourself and give up the women. Haven't you had enough? I'm sure you will be able to find something that will keep the camera out of your life, and allow you to see your kids every other week. Lets put the kids first, jobs next, and cameras gone FOREVER!
As for TLC, lets get back to what those letters stand for, THE LEARNING CHANNEL!

Wow, the poo is really flying down here in the monkey cage. I'll just wrap up the survey of Courtney Hazlett's column this week and get out.

            Today's items:

            1. Jon & Kate. The TLC "source" is all but certainly a TLC press release. That means rehashed material, which means Bad Journalism.

            2. Pamela Anderson and "The Talk." This has gotten a lot of coverage elsewhere. We're in rehash territory again. And the notion that we're past the sex-tape era isn't reality-based. I'll believe it when the news is ho-hummed. That wasn't the case with Prejean last week. The item is a rehash couched in fatuous wishful thinking. Bad Journalism.

            3. TV sit-coms. These are plugs, which are self-indulgence. I'll give credit for reviews, like the SNL piece earlier this week. This, though, is filler. Bad Journalism.

            4. The weekend box-office. Oh, brother. I knew it was coming, but it's annoying just the same. Is there anyone out there who is the least bit impressed by this weekly feature? Kamiron, are you reading this comment section still, or are you too caught up in your devotional exercises with Hazlett's bikini pictures? This item defines self-indulgent filler. Bad Journalism.

So, two rehash pieces and two pieces of self-indulgent filler. Today's score: 0%.

Now, for the weekly score: 42%

            • Good Journalism: 1 review, 2 items featuring original reporting, and a feature article worth 7 items of original reporting.
            • Bad Journalism: 11 rehash items and 3 pieces of self-indulgent filler.

That Oscar article really inflated Hazlett's percentage, by the way. The columns by themselves only rated 18%.

By the way, Randy, an anonymous source tells me the reason Hazlett isn't on Morning Joe anymore is Mika and Mika alone. And that Miss Priss-inski nickname highlights the reason.

            'Bye.

I should add that the two pieces of original reporting in Hazlett's column were about a cell phone not going off during a play and Oprah not running a "Favorite Things" episode.

This column really is quite shameful.

On the bright side, Alex Witt will be having her weekly audition for one of Hazlett's likely replacements tomorrow morning. Who will it be? The Anne Hathaway lookalike? The preppie-jailbait brunette from last Saturday? The blonde dimbulb who thought Amelia had garnered wide critical acclaim? Will it be someone new?

Hazlett should shape up for her own sake. Every one of the women I mentioned is where she was three years ago. Given the state of this column, I doubt any of them could be any worse.

Kate emasculated Jon every chance she got. She's an OCD, controlling witch, and I'm surprised they were married as long as they were. Jon was acting like a 30 year old frat boy....

They were both morally bankrupt and are getting what they deserve. Now if network T.V. will just stop offering them spots on anything, perhaps they will go away permanently, that's the only real hope here!

I will be saying thank you this Thanksgiving that this show is finally over.

For one thing, what careers do Jon and Kate have? Reality TV actors?

At the beginning, it was interesting to watch two "normal" people going through what they did, with the birth of 6 babies. The Jon and Kate story should have ended after a few shows. Million dollar contracts, million dollar mansions, fancy cars, nannies and TV cameras filming every minute detail, is not reality. Any other "normal" family would have gone back to work, expanded the house to add more room for the babies and moved on with their lives. Jon and Kate became TV stars. That's not reality.

The past few years of this show have become nothing more than a soap opera made up to increase ratings. It would be nice if TLC, The Learning Channel, would actually go back to it's roots and show programs that are interesting and stimulating - where you could actually learn something - instead of just cashing in like every other network has done.

They are each equally to blame for the situation that they are in. Anyone can write a book. Anyone can do something stupid to try to get on TV. Is everyone that tries successful? No, thank God. These two people should focus more on raising the eight kids that they chose to bring into this world, and less on the fancy cars, the TV interviews, the mansions and jet setting all around the world. That would be reality.

Jon and Kate have cashed in on their 15 minutes of fame. If they failed to prepare for the day that they wouldn't be on TV, then that is their fault and no one elses. Time to rejoin the real world and get a job and do what everyone else that has kids does.

I am glad to see a potential return to more comedy shows and less of the reality shows. I hope that is a trend. I remember the good old days.....when MTV, Music Television, actually showed music videos. Now it is reality TV 24/7. CMTV, Country Music Television, same thing. The whole world has dumbed down to reality TV, that isn't even close to being in the vicinity of reality. Granted there are a few Reality TV shows that are good. But, it is not many. The market is oversaturated. It will be nice to see sit-coms back on TV.

            Are you serious??

It's not like they didn't ask for this. It's not like they didn't gobble the fame up like two greedy retards. They WANTED this and now, suddenly, things don't go right so they decide to pull out of their contract?? No no no.. you cannot do that legally.

            Ok. Basic Contractual law:
When you sign a contract, you make a legal, binding agreement. If you don't keep this agreement, you can be sued.

            That's how the law works.

the law works that way, and when it is a product for consumption, and the providing company is acting in a legal fashion that the public finds immoral, such as children working in sweatshops, or the destruction of a family and suing for monies that would partially benefit the children of the family which also made said company millions and millions, then people have the right to boycott the show and cost them more money than if they just left this family alone.

It was an interesting program at first because the set of quads was born in the hospital just 8 miles from where we live. It was interesting to see the reactions of the other kids and tosee how they adjusted to adding 4 more brothers and sisters to the family. It had to be a huge adjustment. Yes after a while it got boring and I am glad they are finally going off air. I wish the kids all the luck in the world because they are going to need it.

Wrong show, Harry! The Gosselins have twins and SEXTUPLETS (6) for a total of eight.

You guys hammering John is unreal. You've seen first hand how she treated this man. From the onset, I said, how can he take this kind of treatment from a woman he calls his wife. Now, all the blame is not on Kate's shoulder's. John wasn't a choir boy, in this case I would call it contributory negligence on both parties.

The funny thing about it is - Face it, we loved their disfunctionality or we would not have gravitated to it.....

Hallelujah!! It's about time those people got pulled off the air. Hopefully the kids can return to some semblance of a normal life & become well-adjusted adults. Though, I think my expectations may be a bit high.

Those poor kids have been abused and used for paychecks since birth. I worry what will become of them now their ability to bring in thousands of dollars a week has ended. Kate treated them like punching bags when she was getting rich off of them. I can't imagine what she'll do to them now.

If ONLY it really were the end of Jon and Kate, instead of just the end of their stupid show!

I AM SO HAPPY that this whole Jon and Kate thing, whatever it was, is finally going to be over..If I see it on TV, I just keep on clicking...Kate should back into the old house to save money..they both need to go back to work and live real lifes...she still has the nanny for help...although there was 9 of us kids and my step mom didn't need a nanny..but maybe Kate needs an adult to boss around now that Jon isn't there...anyway...yea !!!!!!!!! I wish the kids well, of course, and now maybe they can be normal kids.....but Jon and Kate...keep going.......................AWAY.....

Those poor kids. I can't imagine the hell their life must be with that sadistic, abusive witch and their so called father with the Peter Pan complex. Oh wait! Yes, I can, because they put it on national TV. The beatings, the degrading, all of it is up for public view. Kate? I wish hell on earth for you. Really. You are a low class abusive *itch who deserves nothing but PAIN and suffering. Jon? You have the mentality of a ten year old. My hope is that we will see STRICT laws against implanting sadistic witches and immature little boys with a litter of human beings.

Kids? Remember, paybacks a _itch. PAY THEM BACK... BIG TIME. Mommy Dearest made a fortune, I'm sure. So will Mommy & Daddy Dearest II.

Im so sick of hearing about John and Kate. I've never liked Kate, shes a _itch, and she is constantly yelling at John. hmmm..... Kate doesn't that make you think that oh um if i didnt yell at my husband all the time for stupid _hit then we would still be together and have a normal happy life. I don't understand why John even married her, i'm sure she yelled at him all the time when they were dating. why would anyone marry someone who yells constantly and makes you quit your job to help with the kids. then gets mad when you try to work from home. hmmmm money has to be made some how Kate. Your not doing anything really to bring home the money. oh wait just your lame books. but only that can work for a short amount of time. When no one likes you they're not going to buy your books. i wouldn't, i owned a book store i would never put your books in there, if i was desperate and need something to keep a fire going then yes i would buy your books. I feel sorry for all of the kids. None of them are going to be easy to handle when they get older and by then they all would probably make a plan to move very far away. I would if John and Kate were my parents too. And i find it very stupid that pretty much all of the blame is going on John, The only reason why is because hes a man and men always do something bad. um yeah right. women are just as guilty as guys are. so world get over yourself.

I used to think she was a BBB until he got out on his own and we could see how much of a jerk he actually was/is.  That's when I realized she treated him that way because he deserved it.  He's an idiot... he killed their golden goose claiming the kids' best interest was his main concern, but watch how fast he tries to pimp them to another show when the TLC cash runs out.

please she's a harpee. He's just acting like a sex-starved teenager because he's probably trying to put as much genetic distance between himself and kate as humanly possible.

                Can't say i blame him.

Yes. He's a moron. That doesn't make her NOT a moron.

I give thanks and am glad it is over; and I hope not to hear anymore of them; I feel sorry for their children to have to endure this is their past; the best thing these two parents can do is get an interest in something other than themselves; I think they should devote the attention to a normal life for their children. How & why did this thing ever start?????

I gave up television completely in July and I haven't missed it one bit. Most of what's on television is absolute crap (see the Gosselins train wreck of a marriage). No thanks. I'd rather listen to Michael Savage or read a book than watch any of the @!$%#e that passes for "quality television".

Who watches these shows anyway. Every week the media circus launches some other new "reality" show. Who really looks at this tripe. Somebody with a very dysfunctional life must find entertainment in this crap becasue there is no human rreason for wasting your time on this type of circus.
