Black workers' crisis may linger after upturn

— OAKLAND, Calif. - The recession has compounded a decades-long problem for black workers, who began the downturn facing a far higher jobless rate than the general population and have fared worse since.

Now experts are worried that many blacks will remain in crisis even as the economy begins to recover, largely because the recession has eliminated so many working-class jobs in sectors like manufacturing and retail that are likely to come back slowly, if at all.

“Across the board right now the job prospects are slim, but for blacks even more so than average,” said Algernon Austin, director of the program on race, ethnicity and the economy at the Economic Policy Institute, a think tank that focuses on issues affecting lower to middle-income workers.

Tariq Mustafa can relate. Mustafa, 30, has been looking for work since March, when he completed a temporary retail job after he was laid off from a hotel position. He estimates he has filed 100 online job applications as well as spending months pounding the pavement and visiting potential employers in person.

He said he occasionally feels that race plays a role in his inability to get a job, especially in this tight job market.

“Sometimes you come in and you ask for an application, and you know they’re hiring because it was on the Internet, and they’ll say, you know, ‘No, we’re not hiring,’ ” he said. “It’s just, it’s that vibe, just how people treat you.”

The numbers illustrate the sheer depth of the problem black workers are facing. For all the gains that black workers have made over the past 20 years, everywhere from corporate boardrooms to the White House, there remains a persistent gap between black and white unemployment rates.

Since the recession began in December 2007, the national unemployment rate has gone from 4.9 percent to 10.2 percent, while the the black unemployment rate has jumped from 8.9 percent to 15.7 percent, according to government figures.

In addition, blacks have been more likely to drop out of the labor force altogether as many have become so discouraged about job prospects that they have stopped looking for work.

The labor force participation rate for blacks has fallen from 63.4 percent of adults in December 2007 to 61.7 percent as of October. The overall labor force participation rate in the same period has fallen from 66 percent to 65.1 percent, the lowest level since 1986.

Black workers also are likely to take longer to find a new job. In 2008 blacks made up 19.3 percent of the total unemployed population but represented 25.4 percent of the people who had been unemployed for six months or longer, according to the National Employment Law Project.

In good times and bad, blacks face harsher employment prospects for many reasons, including a higher likelihood of past incarceration or homelessness, and less access to a network of friends and relatives who might have job leads. Discrimination, while less overt than in years past, still plays a role, experts say.

“The American labor market is less friendly to black workers than to white workers, and it has been for all of U.S. history,” Austin said.

'There's only one America'
Some researchers who have studied this disparity see opportunity in the nascent economic recovery. They say programs such as the government's massive $787 billion stimulus program offer a fresh chance to think about how to address racial disparities.

In the long run, these researchers argue, addressing longstanding disparities will benefit the overall economy by creating a stronger work force that can more aggressively compete on the global stage.

“There’s only one America, ultimately, as far as in the global economy," Austin said. "There’s not white America, black America, Hispanic America — there’s just one. And it’s either we’re all succeeding or we’re all failing."

Although the odds are tough, many black jobseekers who spoke to msnbc.com said they believe succeeding in the job market is a personal issue.

“I think it falls on the individual person, how much drive they have to want to succeed,” said Laron Blackwell, 30, who is looking for a job after completing an 11-week job training program in trade and shipping at The Workforce Collaborative, a nonprofit in Oakland. “I don’t really look at race as, like, part of why people don’t have the drive.”

Mustafa, the former hotel worker, thinks he has an advantage when job-hunting because he has a strong work history and has learned over the years how to make a good first impression.

“Some jobs don’t care about your experience sometimes — they just want to know how you look,” he said in an interview at the Oakland Career Center, where he was looking for job openings. “You know, they want to see how you present yourself and how you talk.”

Still, he does sometimes sense that race plays a role.

He recalls how he once he waited five hours to speak with a manager at a restaurant in an affluent northern California suburb, only to be turned away after many other, non-black applicants had been seen.

“In the black community it’s always like, ‘Well, if they don’t have a job, you definitely ain't getting a job,’ ” he said.

While overt racism may not be as prevalent as in decades past, subtle matters of perception, as well as structural societal issues, can have a tangible impact on job prospects for black workers, experts say.

For example, most people get jobs because of who they know. That can be a hindrance in a community that suffers higher rates of unemployment and thus fewer connections to potential jobs. The problem is compounded in a recession, when the job market is so tight that even a low-level job might require an inside recommendation.

Rising unemployment also can beget further joblessness because fewer people in the community have job connections or see role models of working family members and friends.

Olis Simmons runs a youth organization, Youth Uprising, in an area of Oakland that once boasted a large number of well-paying manufacturing jobs.

Over the years, many of those manufacturers left, leaving behind a wide swath of poverty, crime and unemployed workers — and fewer paths to adult employment.

“That actually set up a system where young people are disproportionately affected and, as a result, discouraged,” Simmons said.

Other, even more subtle issues of race and class may subconsciously affect employers’ decision-making. A 2004 study by Harvard researchers found that people in Boston and Chicago with stereotypically “white” names were more likely to get callbacks for job interviews than those with stereotypically “black” names.

Disparity at all education levels
Even black workers with a college education face higher rates of joblessness. A recent study by Austin, from EPI, found that the average unemployment rate for college graduates under age 27 in the first nine months of this year was 6.2 percent for whites and 13.3 percent for blacks.

“These are young blacks who went to college, stayed in school, but yet we still see that their unemployment rate is double that of whites,” he said.

Roxanne Winston is not surprised by that statistic. Winston, 22, will graduate from UC Berkeley in December with a degree in American studies and a resume that includes a term as student body president.

Even as she begins her post-college job search confident she will land a job, issues of race are very much on her mind.

“I want to present someone that is confident and strong and is college-educated, and I kind of don’t want you to notice that I’m African-American, even though that’s such a strong part of my identity,” she said. “I don’t want it to be something that you take into account when you’re considering employing me or not.”

“It can be a dilemma for a lot of African-Americans because it can sound like I’m not proud to be African-American, I’m not proud to be who I am, but it’s just a reality that there is race bias in employment,” she said. “It would be nice for that to not be the case, but this is the reality we’re living in.”

Among jobholders, inequalities also remain, said Steven Pitts, a labor policy specialist at the University of California, Berkeley. His research has shown that black workers are more likely than white workers to hold low-wage jobs or work in less lucrative positions in the same field. In retail alone, Pitts found that 73.3 percent of black workers received low wages, compared with 62.2 percent of white retail workers.

Lower wages and higher unemployment add up to a median income for black households of  $34,218, compared with $50,303 for all U.S. households, according to the latest census data.

Experts say the situation is especially dire for blacks who face serious barriers to employment, such as a history of incarceration or homelessness.

Blacks are five times more likely to be in jail than whites, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. A 2008 study by the Department of Housing and Urban Development found that nearly 42 percent of sheltered homeless people were black.

In this tight job market some are finding that even a relatively minor offense, or one that was years in the past, can make a person unemployable.

“We’ve set a trend that’s going to still, even in the recovery of our economy ... leave out a lot of people,” said Joyce Guy, an account specialist at The Workforce Collaborative, whose clients often have a history of incarceration, addiction issues or homelessness.

"Right now, with the economy being the way it is, somebody’s going to get left out, and over the years it’s been Afro-American people that get left out."

‘I’m no longer the same person’
For Marcus Moore, who has spent 29 of his 48 years behind bars for drug-related crimes and is now homeless, it’s a struggle just to get the basic necessities for a job interview, such as appropriate clothing and money for transportation to the potential employer.

He also knows that once he gets there, his must explain his past mistakes.

“My past convicts me, you know, and that (will) be for the rest of my life,” Moore said.

Still, Moore, who was job-hunting at the Oakland Career Center on a recent day, said he is confident he will get work. He has past work experience as a supervisor for a thrift store chain and in his late mother’s restaurant, he said.

The challenge is to convince employers that he has changed in the decades since he first landed behind bars at age 18.

“I know I no longer think the same and I’m no longer the same person, you know?” he said. “All I need is an opportunity to show a company what I could really do.”

1. There is no recovery happening

2. Race has nothing to do with it.

3. What's really happening that this story is supposed to cover up or keep us from asking about?

I'd say Dubai pretty much shows the entire world that recovery isn't happening and the fools in power don't have a clue how to bring one about. You just can't spend yourself out of debt! This Healthcare Plan will cause unemployment and stiffle recovery with adding expenses to everything people have to buy and now they want a higher income tax to cover increased war efforts. Then they will be after a VAT -value added tax or federal sales tax on everything -that's already waiting in line to be brought up in the Senate.

Sigh it really does get tiring. What about Mexican(brown) unemployment, Oriental(yellow) or Indian(red) Why do these articles always focus on the plight of the black and not the other minorities out there? What about the handicapped?. Is there job discrimination probably- and it works in all ways- Young, Old, Color, Looks and Handicapped as a few examples but no, the articles and "studies" focus on Black not on others. Sorry, but the whole world is not against you and the martyrdom gets very tiring. Millions of people out there are suffering- and they are all types not just one.

Wow! Another useless article for the whining victims of America's bad decisions to point to and then continue to whine.....get off your butts and make better more informed decisions about who you elect to office and I guarantee you things will get better.

Spend a little time reading about the thirties and how information was sparse and the same kiind of baloney that got Rossevelt elected got this clown we now have in office. He is even using the same game plan to see if his thinking is a better brand of socialism than what Rosevelt had in mind. Socialist morons never seem to learn about human spirit and endeavor, they need their own space and freedom to be at their best, not some clod in a tax paid suit telling them what to do or think.

That race dog just won't hunt like it used to.

I thought with a "black" President we would finally do something about illegal workers killing the economic rise of the black community. I guess I was wrong.

Arrest anyone who hires an illegal, it will fix so many of our problems!

It's not a black or white or red or even blue thing, who cares about race when nobody is working. Obama thinks health care and cap and trade are more important than giving small business incentives to hire again. All this guy and the Democrats do nowdays is to think of new ways to tax so our Government can pay off this ridiculous debt Obama got us into. I see no substantial recovery until these socialists are out of office

How's that "hope and change" working for ya? It's not a race issue, it's an economical issue. It has just become too easy for black people to claim discrimination, and they have gotten an "entitlement" mentality rather than start at the bottom like the rest of us and work your way up, they want to get jobs based on their race. If black people would let it, racism would go away, but then they wouldn't have anyone to blame. People are people, color is NOT an issue or an excuse anymore!

Keep voting Democrat and have them take that money from the evil rich and give it to you!

The Democrat party loves poor people, they love them so much, they want more. They preach how they will tax the evil rich and redistribute it to the poor, of course there is a 90% Washington D.C. handling fee.

Wouldn't it be better to have a bigger paycheck instead of having someone collect money on "your" behalf?

This is not a color issue. It is economics 101. I grew up in pearly white Orange County, California. Many friends decided to go for the early big bucks in construction. These friends are now scrambling for any work they can get. But they are also competing against the influx of illeagal immigrants that are also in the trade and driving down the wages of what used to be a good middle class profession. (don't be fooled this will soon happen in your state) In Michigan, I assume that people of all colors are affected by the dismise of the auto industry, and the domino effect of job losses for the area. Even education has not proven to be the safe harbor it used to be. Often it is the luck of the draw of who you are employed by. Example, if you work for Chrysler or GMC your chances of layoff were far worst then if you worked for Ford, Toyota or Honda. So enough with the color thing.

My daughter is white, 46 years old, college educated and has over 20 years experience in her field. She was laid off two months ago.

She hasn't found a job yet. She is drawing unemployment for the first time in her life. Neither her father, nor I have ever drawn unemployment.

This will be a slim Christmas for her family.

So, tell the blacks they are not alone.....

Crystal you can't start at the bottom anymore. The bottom is too low. The bottom in the 1980's was $12 to $15 an hour for labor, today it is $8 to $10, at a much higher cost of living.

Remove the artificial bottom, get rid of illegal workers.

UC Berkeley is a very prestigious university, and a degree in American studies is a fluff degree (i.e. little to no value). Why do prestigious universities offer such curriculums in the first place?

Unless Ms. Winston goes on to get "at least" her master's degree in American studies so that she could teach at a junior college, I don't see her finding gainful employment.

Part of the problem is that universities need to tighten up their curriculum, and provide adequate career counseling before their students even begin in their freshman year.

Okay lets look at the brighter and encouraging part: First of all MSNBC this article backfired because you wanted to "poor black man" to point fingers at "whitey" and make accusations about their skin color being the problem. For the most part that response was not in the article. I liked the woman who said it was a "personal responsibility." That woman will find a job and be a good reliable worker! I actually find comfort in the fact that the race card was actually minimized! It was not minimized by the media but the everyday Americans that refuse to be a part of the race baiting agenda of either political party. Now to be fair and honest (I am not black) it must be intimidating in a tough and tight job market to feel the pressure of the color of your skin working against you. I am sure there are employers out there that are a-holes and would not hire someone based on the color of their skin but I believe that you reap what you sow and in some way their racist attitudes will be dealt with either now or the life after. I would encourage each of us not to give preference to anyone with a different skin color but at least be mature enough and honest enough to admit that there are morons out there that still exist. . . . .unfortunatley the largest manufacturer of racial tensions are media and government that wants to constantly catagorize us based an the amount of pigment in our skin rather than the potential of our mind!

Do they really think that a man or women who is unemployed or lay-ed off (Of any other color then black) is really going to give a rat's behind about the subject title. The rest of us that are employed don't give a rat's behind either!!!! Unemployment is high for EVERYONE not just Blacks and that's what should concern everyone . If Obama would have done more to create jobs instead of funding every Liberal project's that the Democrat's had in their hip pocket for the last forty years...Maybe he should have given them some Obama money!!!

And there you have it folks. This recession isn't about eroding consumer confidence, massive government spending, threats of new taxes and mandates, a failing housing market, etc. etc.

It's plain ol' racism. Even though we're heading into a "recovery" (LOL!) the "Man" is at it again.

Is this supposed to "guilt" employers into hiring to get the economy started?

Anything to justify the attrocious unemployment numbers under this administration. What a waste of internet space.

Even if this story were true, I'd be royally peeved right now because I was denied access to the college degree of my choice due to affirmative action. All those "minorities" who got in better be using it. It came at the expense of my own personal dreams and ambitions. I noticed the article says nothing about affirmative action and how that will open MANY jobs once we get into a real recovery.

Race shouldn't play an issue in that statement. In fact he's bi-racial last time I checked his heritage.

It does however raise an interesting question: why do you feel the need to drag in the race (or his perceived race based on skin color by you) of the elected President into a discussion and article about alleged racial discrimination in hiring practices?

Do you automatically blame all white Texans for the invasion and war in Afghanistan/Iraq?

Not a Pres Obama fan at all, but the constant racial sniping that always surrounds anything to fo with Pres Obama really proves that racism is unfortunately alive and well in the USA.

I was wondering whether I was missing something with this article. After reading the comments, I don't think I am as I agree with most of you. As a black American, 75% of my friends are black, and of them and my entire family, 95% are employed and have been continuously for at least the past 5-10 years (some 20+, most with the same employers). I've known two people to get laid off this year, one found a job two weeks later, the other went back to the military.

I am not sure who wrote this article or what they were trying to accomplish besides furthering a stereotype and making us look like whiny, lazy Americans. Both of which we are not. The recession hit all Americans. We know that. Not saying that there aren't any employers that don't discriminate because there are. But, come on, things aren't that dire.

What global stage, we have no manufacturing industries or if we do they are preparing to go overseas. Our people can get all the degrees they want but there won't be a job for you unless you want to work in the service industry. Our country cannot survive with policies like NAFTA and any other free trade agreement, uber taxes on our corporations and soon to be uber taxes on us the few who are still working.

MSNBC lost what little credibility it had when it FAILED as a news REPORTING agent to cover OBOMA correctly instead of turning a blind eye and deft ear to what OBOMA was really all about, also, including his questionable associations. The tired excuse of not wanting to vote against OBOMA into office was seen as being a racist, in fact it should be a lesson not to vote based on color but on ability, character, truthfulness and similar values.

Recession is faceless and colorless.

O's entire campaign was race based. Everything he does is race based. "First black pres, first black pres, yes we can". I never thought we could do worse than Bush, but O has by far surpassed the Bush in terms of damage, 1 year into it. I stand by my statement: There is one black I'd like to see hit the unemployment rolls: Obama

I wonder what the unemployment rate is in the illegal Mexican alien community. Probably close to zero. They never seem to have problems finding jobs. I'm sure an employer would rather hire a black than go out of business. (if there were no Mexicans to hire.) It is all about finding someone reliable to take the job. Mexicans will do all the jobs, no matter how distasteful. Perhaps the blacks can learn from them.

Some researchers who have studied this disparity see opportunity in the nascent economic recovery. They say programs such as the government's massive $787 billion stimulus program offer a fresh chance to think about how to address racial disparities.

Ahhh Haaa...I knew there was an ulterior motive for these government handouts. Leave it to the "organizer-in-chief" to see to it that all his ACORN friend's get taken care of...

Wow, more racism.....this article is pure racism, black against white racism. Jobs are hard all over, my husband lost his job due to down sizing and he had to take a job on the other side of the country. I see him once a month or so now, its a sacrifice but sometimes that is what you have to do. He got the job through a job fair and many others, including minority folks, could have taken jobs like this but were unwilling to make any sacrifices.

The economy is bad right now and all Americans are feeling the effects of it. It is sad how some are so used to leaning on the race card for everything, I guess it is always easier to blame someone else for your shortfalls. It is pretty hard to say that blacks are being discriminated against when the majority of the country voted on a black man for president. Those always screaming racism may want to take a good long look in the mirror. If all you can see is racism around you, then maybe you are the real racist.

You missed my point.

Did Pres Obama lay the woman off? Does Pres Obama only claim African American heritage? Have you ever read his books?

The article is written by a MSNBC writer not Pres Obama. The press is also the party that constantly refers to Pres Obama as being African American. If HE comes out and claims there's a disparity in current hiring/firing practices you would have a valid point. At this point I do not recall him having ever made a statement publicly that the recession is affecting those on the unemployment roles in a racial fashion. Nor do I ever recall having heard him deny his white heritage on his mother's side.

Sad reflection also on Newswhiners in general that the majority chose to collapse my post 1.38 above (which undoubtedly will happen to this one too) while letting a blatant racial statement elsewhere stand. Like I said above, actions and words prove more than anything else that racism is indeed alive and well.

Lol. Technically correct because Mexican means... citizen of Mexico and most illegals are so I agree. Mexican isn't a race which often is misused here in American. Hispanic or Latino is the correct way.

If all the illegal immigrants would get deported... that would open up millions of jobs that unemployed American's could do.. who ARE citizens and deserve them.

After reading these posts I have to wonder: Is it being black that causes people longer economic tough times? If the problem is something else, which has a higher incidence among blacks (like lower income, higher urban living, lower average education, higher inclusion in manufacturing jobs). It's an important distinction! Trying to fix a "black" economic problem, is very different from trying to fix a "lower education problem". Assuming that you actually can address the problem, you have to apply the medicine where the actual injury is.

Are you kidding me? This article must be a joke or something. This economy isn't playing favorites by race. It doesn't matter black, white, hispanic, oriental or whatever you may be. This whole race card crap needs to go away. We need to be just americans period. Get over it.

The other problem people don't understand is immigration. If every American had to go through the process of our INS which is now the USCIS. They would understand why so many are here illegally. The process is a joke, they treat people like cattle and talk down to you like your a morron. You make an appointment and wait for 2 hours after you timed appointment. Then half of them don't know the whole process and you get different answers from different people on the same problem. My wife is from another country and it cost us close to $8,000.00 including a lawyer to allow her to stay in the country because the USCIS computers doesn't talk to other from state to state. Immigrants have to waste tons of time in line or waiting for the appointment date, pay $700.00 to fiel for a work permit. Then wait for the work permit to come in the mail a couple of months later. No wonder they make up stuff to get a job while waiting for the government to process paperwork. Doesn't make it right, but I understand it having gone through it. The process has to be changed.

The governement can't handle a process like immigration that we have been doing since the government inception and you thnk they can handle controlling health care.? Give me a break. I'm impressed if they can make their own coffee in the mornings. Oh yeah they don't. ahahahaaa

There are over 11,385,000 skilled jobs being held by illegal aliens or undocumented immigrants as our elected royalty prefers to call them! Wouldn't it be nice to have AMERICANS working those jobs in AMERICA? It won't cure the problem, but it would really be a big help to 11,385,000 out of work Americans! Whens enough, enough and Americans start demanding our elected royalty start addressing the problems of AMERICANS over illegal aliens? It doesn't matter what color our president, or any elected royalty is. Politicians are a different race, and only loyal to what keeps them in power! Greed has no color! If he got rid of all the illegals in those jobs and gave them to Black Americans, at least the money would go back into our economy creating jobs instead of mexico where we see no benefit at all! So far I would say our elected royalty has been very fair in making sure Americans of all races are equally screwed! Here's where I got that number

Bad excuse. I'm white and I have trouble finding jobs. I've applied for jobs and have been told "the position has been filled" and then I keep seeing the same job ad for weeks after that. I've gone months without work. I work in the business world and as I look around me, there are a lot of ethnic people. In fact, business companies pride themselves on being ethnically diverse. The poor economy and the stiff competition makes it difficult for ANYBODY, not just blacks, to get a job. Stop playing the race card and toughen up. Keep applying and keep interviewing. Get some professional advice on your resume and interviewing. Make sure to be proactive and call an employer at least a week after you sent them an application and your resume.

One resume tip for you that might help - don't put down what your job responsibilities were. Put down what you accomplished. For instance "I generated $3 million in revenue because of the creative intitiative I had" or something. Potential employers want to know what value you will be to them, not just that you have experience doing the type of work.

So what can the jobless or job-challenged people do? Black, green, blue, or white!

  • I could shout at our elected group that says they are doing something, but in reality has not addressed the real significant problems
  • I could get mad at those who say they are not hurting in this downturn. (and turn their nose up to those who are hurting)
  • I can continue to look for real silver linings of a job climate change. (The news is good for this.... although they are misinformed)
  • I could take all of my piling-up bills and use them to start the fireplace at night. (Now that's a real thought)
  • I can (and will) continue to pray for a miracle (... and for one minute don't think that I haven't or that I don't believe that one could happen)
  • I could keep flailing away at my current job that is bringing no noticeable income. (Keep honing my sales skills and trolling for those who might have enough income to care for the service and product that I offer)
  • I could continue to put resumes on the Internet that only bring scams to my in-box.
  • I could continue to search for income of $8.00 per hour at the local employment office.
  • I could try to get a grant to get retrained (Good Luck)
  • I could try moving to another city.. leaving everyone else behind.
  • I could try mining for my hidden talent to see if it is marketable.
  • I could try to be optimistic anyways... though there is not much to be optimistic about.
  • I could just file bankruptcy and walk away...

Just a few thoughts that run through the mind of someone who has been cornered in this downturn. But I still have a few meals left and a few old tricks that may come in handy.

The one thing that I have come to realize is this.... we are not in some regular downturn in the economy. This is so much bigger than what so many are still thinking. There is a huge orchestration going on behind the scenes that we are not privy to. So much of it is being accomplished without an understanding by those who are doing it. It's just coming together on it's own... (well... if you believe the earth just came together on it's own, you will believe that)... and much of it with good intentions.

Where there is no demand... there is no economy.

(... this is one of my bad days! Is anyone else having those?)

The black population in America is about 13%. In October blacks unemployed was 15.7% so yes there is some disparity in the figures as the white unemployment was 9.5%. But there is good news, 84.3% of blacks are working.

Adult men at 10.7% unemployed doesn't just mean white men, it means all adult men (89.3%) of all worker groups are working.

Adult women 8.1% unemployed doesn't mean just white women, it means all adult women (91.9%) of all worker groups are working.

From the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (10.7 percent) and whites (9.5 percent) rose in October. The jobless rates for adult
women (8.1 percent), teenagers (27.6 percent), blacks (15.7 percent), and
Hispanics (13.1 percent) were little changed over the month. The unemployment
rate for Asians was 7.5 percent, not seasonally adjusted. (See tables A-1,
A-2, and A-3.)

First, my heart goes out to ANYONE who is unemployed or who has been downsized, laid off, etc...

I'm black w/ a graduate degree, strong work history, & an excellent work record throughout... I (like many other blacks I know) have received 1 call in the last 11 months (longer for others)so I'm not impressed by your 2 month lamentation (but I hope you find a job soon because the time period doesn't necessarily make your need any less tangible and urgent).

People love to say that this discussion is old and tired, but the fact is that it wouldn't be an issue at all if real change took place, particularly in those corporate sectors that, quite frankly, make a regular practice of discrimination. No doubt, other races are discriminated against, but Hispanics/Asians (mentioned specifically only because they were specifically mentioned in other postings)often seem to have less of a problem acquiring a job. Also, they often hire their own almost exclusively and sometimes (from what I've heard of acquaintances' experiences and out of the mouths of Hispanic/Asian friends/co-workers/acquaintances) look for & sometimes create ways/ situations to fire people outside of their race to hire more of "their own". Those people are usually black.

What really is old and tired to me is the interjection of incarceration or lack of drive in articles like this. I am a very hard worker & have never been in jail (not even close), and none of the many unemployed blacks that I know have been either, but articles like this always send the message that "ALL the black people just got out of jail & are now complaining about joblessness" or "All blacks do is complain, but they are all too lazy to do anything to change their situation". Neither is true, but it is easier to make those types of assertions than to acknowledge the prevalent reality of job market bias.

If you look at the 27.6% unemployment rate for teen agers you could agree that their being unemployed means a harder time for their parents to give them the money they need for their schooling, "toys", etc.

If we want more people working in America, we need to give Tax breaks to the small businesses of the country that hire the less skilled and teenagers. By putting these folks back to work, the 15.7% of blacks and 13.1% of Hispanics would be working in the better jobs they seek as more money is being spent by the Teenagers for goods that need to be made by more educated and older unemployed workers whatever their background.

By taxing more businesses the government is taking away the very jobs they seem to want to create. Our Government is a very foolish entity.

FIRST... The media MUST get off this race card bull crap!! All it does is drive that racial wedge DEEPER & DEEPER into society.

SECOND!.......... People should be hired on their individual qualifications as they pertain to the job that they seek! If it's a sales job for cow manure, and one person speaks like he or she has a mouth full of samples,,,, its obvious that that person most likely will NOT be hired. Just let things fall where they may,,, it will work it self out W/O the gov sticking it's nose into it!

THIRD!........... Put a limit on WELFARE!!!! Make it one year and that's it. There are PLENTY of low paying labor type jobs out there. Take one till something better comes along!!

Sounds harsh, but thats just the way it should go.

Yeah, I'm tired of whitey holding me down.

Cut it out, Captain Marvelous and Skiddy. I'm sure you're being sarcastic, but 'whitey's a slur and using it to paint all blacks as racists really lowers the level of discourse.

Captain Marvelous and jane-cyden, you're each suspended for a day for violating #5 of the Code of Honor. You don't type like that. Pretty much no one types with a dialect outside of characterization. You wouldn't do that in a real conversation, I'd hope, don't do it here.

Good luck with all of these posts! These are horrible and towards the middle through the end is just pure racism. I'm not offended that you didn't suspend more people just wondering what the others said to have possibly been taken off the posts. Thank you for supervising.. a lot of these posts are people that must come from a horrible up-bringing. Its just pure hatred.

This actually upsets me. With 20+ million illegal aliens we wont even take care of our black american brothers who we brought here after starting this great nation.

get rid of all illegal aliens until all "US Born Americans" are gainfully employed.

This is not surprising to me. After completing an intense course in programming with honors and a high recommendation from my professors, I did a telephone interview with my prospective employer and arranged to meet in office the following week. The first thing he said to me? "You are not what I was expecting." He had heard my voice so my being female wasn't the issue. Exactly what was he expecting and why was he not expecting me? Was it too hard to imagine that an African American could have completed the grueling coursework with honors?

Needless to say that when layoffs came, from this national company that is tops in its field, the majority that were laid off were African Americans, me among those.

        Would you consider yourself attractive?

Can you not think of any other reason why the interviewer would say that?

That's the biggest problem, whether it's race related or not, that's the first thought.

Is there now a white person holding that job?

Clint, attractiveness is not a consideration for job propects. So what if I said I was butt-ugly, do you really think that being unattractive would be reason for that comment? Please! There were other females who completed the course, some I would consider more attractive than I and many already with the company more attractive so your comment holds no merit.

My attractiveness or lack there of would be no reason (to a reasonable person that is) to take one look at me and state "You're not what I expected." Vanessa Williams I am not!

Well postive, it depends on what type of job you are hired for. I was hired well before I ever met my manager. This was a 'get-to-know-you' sort of thing. We are not talking about some one man show. This is a campus losation with well over 3K employees on-site. and a major programming entity world-wide. They are the MicroSoft of their specialty. So small time office does not come into play here.

Clint I believe that your other two questions were answered by the previous post. If the majority laid-off were African Americans, it does not take a large leap to understand that the positions are now held by other races now does it?

Since I had not said one word to the man, the only thing he could have been basing his expectations on where 1. Our conversation. 2. My Transcript 3. My professors recommendations.

Now you may argue that maybe I 'sounded white' over the phone but that would say as much about you as my future manager.

Please cry me a river...African Americans start a big pity me when economies begin to slip, as if they are targeted for layoff. Articles like this just empower you to act upon ignorant news stories that should have never been news or made news in the first place.

I'm sick and tired of the Black man always blaming everyone for there woes as if they are the only race in this society hurting from lack of work. I happen to know many other people from other cultures who have MBA's and can't find work. Perhaps if the ones getting laid off strive to do better then low wage retail jobs and stay there they might not be the first to go.

People that sit there and feel sorry for themselves because of what they don't have or can't get deserve every bit of crap thrown there way period regardless of there race. It's time to step up and stop the hate mongering because you feel your color plays a role in what you don't get or have.

Look at the president of the United States. Worked hard, got involved in politics and kept his nose clean and look where he is now. Stop using everyone and everything as if everything is owed to you all the time. If you can't live with that then go to Africa and see how welcomed you are by your own culture then come back and tell everyone how your discriminated against by your own people.

Last time I checked stats the White man was damn near the minority in this country so cry discrimination to someone who cares because many people of every culture are hurting in this economy.

But you did get hired didn't you. Perhaps the layoff had nothing to do with your race( you did get hired after all) but had to do with job performance, lack of ability or merely being among the most recently hired. Not to diminish the impact of getting laid-off- it is happening to thousands everyday but you did get hired in the first place.

And the only reason in your mind that you were let go is that you and others were let go is because you were black. I am sure if the facts were known it would not be as clear as you say. It is just so much easier to use the race card than admit that maybe you did not have seniority, or that you just could not do the job. Maybe the only reason you got the job is bcause you were black, did that ever come to mind. We all have our own problems out there and are tired of hearing that the world will not roll over and give the black population everything they want and have done little to earn. If you want to improve your life work harder that is what America used to stand for.

You didn't say your age, but maybe after looking at your qualifications they were surprised at how young or old you were? We just hired a gal as a programmer and after looking at her resume and how little she was asking for we thought she was in her early 20's, turns out she was 58 and starting a new career. (she was American Indian, we were surprised when she showed up for her interview, not based on Skin color but age).

One would almost think its a psychological crutch to pin the blame on your race ( or your bosses ) instead of accepting a more unsatisfying conclusion ( i.e. your performance sucked, you had no seniority, you weren't being replaced with anyone at all, etc ).

Many studies have been done and say attractive people get hired first and also have less chance of being convicted of crimes.

Tall people make more money than short.

I have read several articles recently stating that blacks with unusual and non-traditional names (Tariq Mustafa, Algernon) are most frequently turned down for jobs when competing against other blacks with more traditional names.

How is it news that some black racists believe they're screwed until they die and the only proof they have to offer is their paranoid belief that because they think blacks are racist, then all blacks won't do well, because if blacks are racist that must mean that whites are racist. Therefore, blacks will always be second class citizens. Hello! Non-blacks elected a black president. These people need therapy for their behavior, not front page coverage. The reason they won't get jobs is because they can't think worth a damn. They just blame their skin color to make up for their lack of logic.

The only people who care about about the color of their skin anymore happen to be black. Well, actually the only people that care are American blacks. Blacks outside of America don't have near the insecurity we see in articles like this.

Let's not beat around the bush here. Enough of the excuses. Attitude is a problem and it is right in everyones face... take the chip off the shoulder and forget what color YOU are... this is disturbing from the point that it is so one sided.

The President made a clear statement regarding poverty in this country. He said that his administration was centering their focus on "Urban Locations". I may be not exact with wording but this is the jist. The President NEVER stated or as far as I have heard from him the plight of poverty for all Americans. The majority of those in poverty are white in proportion to the total population. Yet the Urban centers, the cities are a majority of the black poulation centers where a great portion of the white poverty is in rural deprived areas of Apalachia and other areas like it throughout the country.

So lets not beat this drum of racially divisive rhetoric and one-sided so called news. because it is not accurate for one and it is not the truth. It does not help these people to be defeated before they even start... that is black or white. It is tought for all.

I wonder what he meant by "You weren't what I expected". Maybe she has body piercings and tattoos with crazy red, blue and purple hair.

Even Disney has rules about hair color/styles, tattoos and piercings.

I won't hire someone who looks scruffy (not saying tat's and piercings are scruffy)even if they have a degree.

Clint, I think this needs to be stirred, though their motives you and I disagree with.

We have done everything as a country to make blacks equal. We have even erred in favor for them in most cases. But things are not equal, why?

It has nothing to do with racism or bigotry and everything to do with illegal workers!

It takes a few generations for things to equal out. We started to witness the financial up-rise of the black community in the 1980's, illegal workers have set us back 30 years. There is no money in labor anymore. In the 80's, labor made $12 to $15 an hour, today, at a much higher cost of living, it is $8 to $10. Why, we have millions willing to work for that and that is not a livable wage. Raise that to $15 and watch everyone get a raise. Walmart will now have to pay their labor that and the managers will have to get a raise. If Target wants to hire one of those employees, they will have to pay more or offer benefits and like magic capitalism is working for the little guy.

That is the proper capitalistic way to stick it to the rich. Make them pay more for their labor and services.

I hardly think "stirring the pot" on this issue will bring about the doubling of minimum wage and more strict policy on illegal workers.

This type of article is absolutely, positively meant to evoke racial divide by inferring that the black person is still suffering from discrimination and therefore being fired or laid off at a rate higher than whites.

Irresponsible, needless propaganda. (unless you're trying to sell newspapers)

          Just ask "Brammy" above.

Pretending racism doesn't exist won't help to increase racial tolerance. Perhaps "stirring the pot" is what gets people discussing these issues. The election of our first black President "stirred the pot", and suddenly people are talking more about race.

Maybe it's easier for white people if the minorities stay quiet and accept their lives, but that's not going to happen. Homosexuals would not have reached the level of acceptance they have if they had not "stirred the pot" and asked people to accept them as equals (silence equals death, etc.) Not that their struggle is over, but you get my meaning.

We all know there are racists in this country, many of whom feel emboldened with Obama being President. We also know nobody admits to being a racist, or perhaps believes they're not. This country was built upon tolerance, not intolerance.

What some call stirring the pot, others call raising important issues. Also, tolerance is a low bar to set. "Tolerance" represents a bare minimum, to "tolerate" another. Why can't we strive for "acceptance"?

I never said racism didn't exist. That's ridiculous. We all know it exists.

I'm sorry, but I don't share your views on "stirring the pot".

I would argue that, if anything, racial tension has gotten worse BECAUSE of stirring the pot; better known as political correctness.

Why can't we strive for unity as a nation, instead of making everything about color?

Why, in many instances, do blacks deliberately seperate themselves via the "African American this", or the "African American that", and then complain about prejudice?

            Who's being prejudiced?

What you want is dialogue, not "stirring of the pot", and the dialogue has been done to death. It's done all it's gonna do! The rest is up to the individual.

This article is complete crap. Everything these people have said has happened to them has happened to us all. There are plenty of jobs for which I do not qualify due to my white skin can these people say the same. Try checking caucasian on your next application if this is what you believe, you won't be considered for the job. Racism is alive and well, whites are openly bashed everyday in the media and the job market. Still I do not attempt to blame my unemployment on others, or any of my other problems for that matter. Things are rough all over, at least someone cared about you enough to write this article, I am white and unemployed and no one cares about me.

            Muf,

I was thinking the exact same thing. The cost to produce something includes labor, and is used to set the price (cost plus profit margin = price of item). It would not do much good to make twice as much money, if everything you need to buy to live becomes three times more expensive.

Why in the world does everyone want to stick it to capitalism and employers -- especially in a recession. We should be pulling for them and bucking the destructive Obama policies. If we fostered an environment to attract business investment, employers would end up competiting for employees by providing higher salaries and better benefits in order to attract them.

That is what capitalism is supposed to be.

YES... it is tough out there for everyone.

We know there are problems in employment for women and people of color. The recession has made it tough for people who are 40+ as well. So to pinpoint one group is a bit much.

In a time where Americans need to stay strong and united, articles like this divide us even more.

ERich ... I don't feel divided from decent white folk because of such an article.

Is this why there are always such hateful (not you) and even dirisive comments in a thread responding to such an article? It is simply reporting news as it is. No need for me to start hating you ... or YOU to get defensive.

Only if someone refused another a job based on racial bias, or harbored hatred for blacks, should they be defensive or feel guilty. I don't blame YOU for black folks' woes. Heck ... many blacks bring problems onto themselves ... just as many whites do.

But, there is no dishonesty in admitting the recession hits minorities harder, and for myriad reasons ... some theirs, many not. I think the article illustrated succintly what those might be.

First of all, there is no recovery. These so called journalist can keep on writing there is and maybe they will begin to believe it, but I don't. There is NO recovery, and it is NOT about race. Try being a 67 years old white female applying for an advertised job, get there and be told: "the job has already been filled but we'll keep your resume on file in case it doesn't work out", and that may be true. Available jobs don't last long. So again, it is the economy, not race, not sex, not age. It's not going to get better until we get as many left wing Democrats out of office as we can, and then we need to start on voting Obama out in 2012.

I think its unfair to say that the recession hits blacks harder Michael Buie. The fact is they are quoting rates not aggregate numbers. More white people have lost their jobs than all other races combined, but a higher percentage of blacks have lost their jobs (they only make up around 15% of the population). So, their are more white people suffering now as a result of the recession, but a higher percentage of black people.

Don't the facts show certain industries are being hit harder than others? So really is it a race issue or an issue of where people work? So instead of saying we need to get cetain skin color jobs, can't we focus on getting all the people that lost jobs, jobs? What can that group of people do to get skills to compete?

Tom ... if a particular industry is made up of minorities, and that industry is hit harder, isn't that race hit harder? What is you guy's argument?

Take Brett's argument: he would have us believe if ratio of whites to blacks were, say 15% blacks to whites, if 100 whites are unemployed and 100 blacks were unemployed, the black population is not really being hit harder than the white population. WTF?

              FAIL!

Absolutely absurd considering the huge number of white voters that elected the first black president. Please cut us ALL, Black and White a break with this drivel. ... we are all Americans.

There are numerous instances where a white person was turned away from a position they are qualified for with government, educational institutions and other employment because of racial quotas. This is a real loser of an article and this writer needs to go back to school or take her head out of her wazoo. What a terrible awful and irresponsible slant that has zero substantiation or credibility.... perhaps she can work for the New York Times!

H\Joe, the author did not say "blame the white man". The author noted a number of reasons ... while simply stating discrimination is ONE factor that contributes.

ERich, I can understand some decent white folk feeling such a report is an indictment of them; it is not. The problem is just so pervasive and a combination of things: from it being certain people's own fault, to SOME discrimination, to geographical situation, training levels, seniority/position ... all kinds of stuff.

I NEVER presume to blame the white race that I know for current problems experienced by minorities. Individuals can be a problem, but not the whole white race nor the whole black race.

The article definitely implies white on black racism at large as the culprit and this is what I have a problem with. You cant argue with that because it is a fact. The problem is that people with the entitlement mentality never realize that they can help themsleves and the politicians do nothing to allow them to realize it. Dependency creates votes for the party that emphasizes dependency and entitlement. If you don't choose to help yourself, don't @!$%# about being left behind or continually dependent. A lesser job today doesn't mean a lesser job tomorrow. Conditions change, and if you stay the same mentally, you'll lose. Attitude is all when it comes to self help. Conway ... while I agree there are people who look down on others because of the job they work, I'm not one of those.

                          I am an IT Professional now. But, my first job was driving a school bus when I was in High School. My second and third jobs were Radio Shack salesman during school and laborer (read: digging ditches and cleanup ... a little jack-hammer stuff). You can't get much more lowly than digging ditches and shoveling sewage. {grin}

                          I did all of that.

But, I persevered and did whatever it took to rise higher, though it took many years. For some people, such opportunities may not have come at all.

There is a song by a gospel group called the Jackson Southernaires called, "Don't Look Down on a Man". I believe that saying strongly. I may be blessed right now, but I could be down next year, next month ... or, even tomorrow.

I pray you find better work, are able to support your family without the difficulty you experience now, and are able to raise your quality of life.

Believe what you want ... it's no skin off MY teeth. :={

Not so "Informed": Oh Mr. Blue you are working, then shut the @#$% up

Wel, Mr. Informed: Just because I am working does not mean I forget about those who are not. I care about my community, other people, our youth ... of ALL races. Why don't you do us a favor and train YOUR aquaintances not to be racist. Oh, wait ... they see the example you set and you look ridiculous: mission accomplished! LOL!

B.S. Now you are making the recession racist. Will you stop at nothing to promote the liberal view? Not to mention to continue to perpetuate the racial divide in this country. The jobs issue is an American problem. Shame!

Leo -- Yes, I would say they are perpetuating the racial divide in this nation. Looking at MSNBC overall and it's revolting race-site "Grio" and you see a pattern of blaming nearly everything that happens to black Americans on racism.

It just isn't so - for instance, I think employers would hesitate to hire any applicant with a history of incarceration or homelessness. It just isn't true that a white employer would look at someone with these "qualifications" and think, "Well, he's white like me, so I guess I'll take a chance." This is a fantasy of the pot-stirring, race-blinded.

                                  From the article:

“There’s only one America, ultimately, as far as in the global economy," Austin said. "There’s not white America, black America, Hispanic America — there’s just one. And it’s either we’re all succeeding or we’re all failing."

The article isn't espousing a political viewpoint, it's covering an issue. There are a ton of stats in there that back up the headline. Discrimination is only one of the reasons cited for black worker's unemployment problem.

And of those "tons of stats", what stat do you think the writer was hoping would catch peoples attention?

I contend that the writer wrote the story around the HEADLINE, not the other way around.

Besides, it's entertaining to read and, sometimes, respond to such posts.

What a racist article. My husband and I are white. We lost double income because of this depression. We lost our house, bankruptcy, living on a fixed income. Not a lot of hope for us to get employed at this point. He's 66 and I'm 52. I'm sorry but it doesn't hit just the blacks. Actually look who is sitting in the white house and he's black. I guess some blacks are employed.

Age discrinination is more prevelent than color. I started working for myself at the age of 50 because companies could hire younger workers to work for less. It's the law of supply and demand. My character has mattered more than my color, and I'm not white!

The article didn't say that unemployment is only affecting blacks. The article states that blacks are unemployed at a higher rate than whites when you look at umemployment overall.

Yeah, Allen ... it's even true if you do a wrong long enough, but certain people are determined to do it, while the rest let it slide, they get tired of hearing about it because the wrong-doers could give a sh!t and the ones that look the other way, though guilt-ridden, just don't want to hear it.

blacks stay where they are because they want to be there. take Harlem for example. there is a subway system that links their neighborhood to one of the largest job markets in the US, New York City. there are trains that link from that into Connecticut (Metro north), new jersey (NJTransit)and inland NY (metro North). the geographical work area is astounding, but they cant find work, even when the economy is good. "there are no jobs in the neighborhood" guess what, go where there are jobs! its been way too long, welfare should be cut off. 1 free trip to Africa instead. you can come back if you work, stay there if you like. My father use to drive 2.5 hours to work everyday, but he wanted to support his family. 5 hours of driving a day, did he want to? No, but yet he did, for two years till he found work closer to home.

Most of the time it's your work history that matters more than race. Most prospective employers are making an investment with whom they hire and as such they are looking to hire someone who will help their profitability. Reality is that if you are not going to make money for your employer, they might not want to hire you. In today's economy, and with higher unemployment rates, the employer has many more choices. The color of money remains the same. The way some people dress could also be a big factor. If you dress like you are going to rob me, why would I hire you? Personal responsibility remains the biggest factor.

I could be wrong ... but, I didn't get a sense that Lee was retorting the poster. I got the sense Lee was saying some people's attitudes in general are still idiotic enough that our President being elected in spite of his being black doesn't seem to keep an awful lot of people from having misperceptions of blacks in general ... to a mytholgical degree.

If Lee's comment was a simple "na-na-na-na-na" to the OP, I stand corrected.

However, if Lee's comment is what I suspected it to be, it was quite profound, and likely went over MANY people's head.

I am glad that you are opposed to everyone else.(there always has to be one person)..But maybe you should read the article over again. Not to be mean, but you have taken great offense to other posts...my reaction to yours was wow...He is going to go blow up something. Most people, just like myself, are seeing it as very racist article. But left it at that and will read the next news article. Do you walk around like this? Read over the posts and see how many people think that the article is just slightly ractist against white people?

also, the article does not have a picture of white or hispanic person. This is strictly about one race.

The article was about blacks and the recession. It's a news piece about a specific topic. That does not mean others are not suffering; it only points out the disproportionate manner in which it hits blacks.

Go out and blow something up?! LOL! Come on! Give me a break! I'm not the one making extremist comments and spouting vitrole at people. I'm REFUTING that poison. :)

Look I wasnt trying to be to bad...But could you explain why there are not articles on white people or others. Like you stated...others are suffering. All races or colors, however you like. This is the second article in one week. It shows white people reverse racism and that they can get away with it....:) You have a wonderful day sir. I really mean that.

This article sounds racist to me. The poor Black-Americans have it worse than the whites....and it's all the whites fault ! "They're keeping us blacks down,by not hiring us." as I was told by a black man a few days ago. I applied to a black manager of a store, and guess what.....he hired a black guy over me,and I'm white, and just as capable of doing the the job. Was I upset? No. I just moved on. Not a big deal. I've appied for jobs, and had the managers hire their relatives over me. So what kind of discrimination is that? I've had police officers in Ohio show favoritism that cost me my driver's license in 2005. The car that hit the rear of my truck was OWNED by the state of Ohio. Black are using discrimination to control whites. The news articles like this are adding fuel to the racial divide fire. We all have it bad, both blacks, and whites, and everyone else who is in this country....except the government....the economy is just fine in their opinion...they got jobs,at the expense of the rest of us !

Government mandates and affirmative action are not helping the black population, either. An employer I recently talked to confided that he did NOT hire a black applicant that was qualified for a position because he has had trouble in the past with affirmative action laws that forced him to provide what he considered 'preferential treatment' to minorities who worked for him over his other employees. This caused a riff in the firm that has ended in a lot of bad feelings. As a result, he is 'gun-shy' in hiring any more black applicants. They may have the greatest of backgrounds, resumes, and experiences, but he doesn't want to take the chance of repeating the garbage he went through several years back with one employee who perceived everything as racist. Government actions, like unions, had their place in society many years back when there were blatant inequities between employers and workers. However, today, much of what we see in terms of racism has been manufactured by the press and hold outs like Reverend Al and the shake down artist Jesse. Even Obama tipped his hand at a press conference several months ago to let the white constituents know just where his heart and soul is in terms of race relations. A lot of what you may begin to see if hiring begins again is a protective measure by white owners and managers to guard against blatant acts of reverse discrimination and racist labels. Personally, I don't blame them.....

I agree completely. The problem with hiring black employees is that you can't fire them even if you want to. I am in construction and our workforce fluctuates based on our workload so laying off 10 people during the year and then hiring 10 more is common. The problem is that you can't lay off any Black employees becuase they will complain to the EEOC and cost you $20,000 to defend the suit even if only 1 of the 10 you lay off is black. The only solution that I have come up with is....stop hiring black employees! I only have 5 blacks and they are great employees but it is just too risky especially in this economy where I cannot afford to pay lawyers.

Wow you have 5 blacks and they are great employees but it is just too risky in this economy to what? Keep them employed, invest in hiring others no matter what their color (if you can afford to) or what?

I have worked for a company who had issues with non-black employees who took advantage of their work by taking massive sick days or do poor work but are yet kept on. These people clearly exploit and abuse the employer and make it difficult for their co-workers to be able to work and focus on what they are supposed to do. People in general no matter what their color can quit, make false claims, sue, or other like shoot and kill co-workers. Hmm no mention about that in your post.

We are all in this together and like others who have posted here don't be old, or have a disability even though you still have a mind to do the job. Let's just all be young, good looking, cut throat, greedy,...well I could go on and on.

I tire of the race card being brought to the table every time there seems to be an issue since we can't seem to approach this GLOBAL ecconomic problem together and not as the "HAVES" and HAVE NOT'S" which I fear will be coming faster then we want to admit.

And no matter who we all voted for this problem did not just show up it was on it's way for some time. WWII galvanized a whole country to fight a common enemy yet we can't seem to come together no matter what our political followings are to try and fix what has been broken and is a major threat to our existance.

                                                            Percy,

Fisherman is expressing a view that is shared by many employers who are tired or wary of the added expense that is involved in defending oneself from a litany of grievances, real or imagined, by a specific segment of the population who have a history of doing JUST THAT. To say that other non-black employees may do this or may do that is an unrealistic argument, because then we have to consider the employee who comes to work one morning with a tactical nuclear device taped to his torso...it just gets too ridiculous to contemplate. Its much more realistic to consider what REALLY happens....and that usually filters down to lawsuits based on either race or sex. Even complaints based on age are rarely heard....most of the litigants have too much pride to even consider it.

In terms of uniting behind a common approach to solving the problem, that would be nice....but the country is polarized along political ideologies, at present, and as long as neither side agrees with how to proceed, we have dialogue and anger and name calling and whatever else. I, personally, don't believe the government has a clue as to what to do and are leading us in the wrong direction. Steve Forbes made a great case last week that every major business downturn or set back in the past 45 years can be explained by government interaction and meddling. As long as there are no incentives to invest in a business, there will be no expansion and NO NEW JOBS. As long as there are laws that favor one race over another, there will be no new hiring.

It's not always about race. I am a 59 year old white female, and also happen to be "overwieght", which can also be a factor in getting the job. Discrimination comes in many forms - not just color. I was with my former employer for 18 years before the company folded. The chance of me finding a job at this point is unlikely, when there are so many young people out there looking for work with the same skills and qualifications.

Maybe this will help you understand. Let's crunch the numbers shall we.

                                                              What these numbers mean is:

For every 10 whites who are unemployed, there are 15 unemployed blacks. There was another article last week that stated the unemployment rate for black males is higher. For every 10 unemployed whites, there are 34 unemployed black males between the ages of 18 and 26.

No doubt there are many forms of discrimination. I used to be hopeful that things will change.

I have issues with the "numbers" you have created. If you do real math, that would make blacks about 32% of the population, which is, according to US Census numbers, well short of that. There are approximately 10.2 million white males currently unemployed, counting those that aren't in the unemployment numbers since they haven't gotten jobs since college or HS yet. That would make approximately 35 million unemployed black males 18-26. See what I mean?

Wait a minute Lee! Numbers are fine but I live in a predominately Black city and the number of unemployed blacks is directly relative to their desire to work!. If they don't apply for work they will not get it. It is easier and more lucritive to sell drugs here and pimp some girls than to actually work. The guys and gals who want to work find jobs and have raised the standard for themselves and their families. Let s face it. there are more schoolling and college oppurtunities for blacks than there are for whites ,asian, latinos etc. All you have to do is take advantage of it..It is those who make the choice to get out of the government slavery system called welfare who are truly becoming independent and contribute to society. Just because the numbers show a uneven variance in working whites versus blacks means nothing.

The unemployment issue is a concern for all races and people - we should pass our concerns to them - not one group.

No you can't. Because everyone was still on FEMA and other HELP monies, so no one WANTED a JOB.

Businesses that normally paid only minimum wage, were offering $10 an hour and way up the pay scale to get people to work, but to no avail!

It wasn't until the FREEBIES ended, did these people start looking for work. But by that time all the jobs WERE filled by outsiders. After all, SOMEONE had to clean up the mess! From what I saw...and believe me, I saw plenty, many (not all) of the people that lived in these sticken areas, sat around waiting for handouts, until the handouts finally ran out. Now they are crying they can't find a job. Go figure.

I have been unemployed since June, and have passed every phone interview I have had (there haven't been many). Once I got in front of the interviewer, I could tell that they had lost interest, and it wasn't because of the color of my skin. You see, I am almost 50. Yes, folks........there is all types of discrimination out there. Certainly, not talked about......but it happens. In fact, I believe that I had a great intereview with the hiring manager, projected a positive image. But the hiring manager was around 30......I belong to a group of unemployed professionals.......many my age, some a little older. A few that are younger. There is no diversity in this group, however, we would accept anyone of race. We are all working to help each other get a job. Some of these people have been out of work for over a year. The reality is that our economy has been crippled and I blame the existing administration. It has nothing to do with race, and I personally am sick of hearing about it. Each party once they leave the White House have left this country in dis-array especially when there is a change in parties entering the White House. While the Obama admin has made some at times questionable judgement to bailout companies, we have to note that this Recession has been going on since 2007 we have to remember about being Dick'd and Bush'd, and keeping wars going on without any clear initiative or approach. 8 years of mistakes cannot be corrected in 10mths. Lets get real America, over ten years of shipping Americas production jobs overseas really dont help Americans at home. We keep a blind eye to the truth until the truth comes around and bites us in the butt. America has a problem, lets bring home our troops and lets bring back our production jobs, with globalization, only the wealth who are making the decisions prosper.

It goes back to Clinton---just took time for the problems with it to boil over. These same people that put no money into buying a house took out 2nd's and 3rd's and spent that money.

Instead of following that line of conversation, you call her an idiot. Maybe your bullying techniques, and your whining are why you can't find a job. All people of all races are being affected by the "no jobs in America" not just blacks. This article makes it appear that only white people are still employed or the jobless whites are quickly snapping up the open jobs; in contrast, the only unemployed are blacks, or the blacks are the only ones that are having a problem finding a job. This is nothing more than propaganda garbage and lies!!!

If this article was titled, " Recession worsens white worker's woes" it would never have been published on line and if it were published on line the writer would soon be jobless. Can you say Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton? Well they would be all over this article if the title were reversed. This article is trash and if it were a newspaper I would use it to line the bottom of my cat's litter box.

Whether you aced the test or not doesn't matter for this discussion (congrats, by the way) because the major colleges would have spotted you a few hundred points if you had needed them. They do not do that for whites. The state police lower the grade requirements for blacks. That is scary. I don't want ANYONE to get free points on an exam that will tell me if he will be a good cop/doctor/etc. What if the roles were reversed. IF a white person wanted to go to a HBCU and the college spotted him 300 points on the SAT because he was a monirty, wouldn't you be mad? And if i ever ahve to rush my grandkids to an emergency room, I'd like to know that the doctor EARNED the degree, not that he/she skated by beause he was black, or because of some sports scholarship.

Look at the Southwest ticket counters, call any HR office, go to MacDonald's, the police force, the head of AARP, the head of the American Cancer Society, doctors, lawyers, news anchors, actors...look around...affirmative action is alive and well. This article is a bunch of crap.

This article wasn't written by a black person, the author is white...So why are you all jumping on the black people and saying that they don't have it hard?? How would you know?? Facts are Facts..the white author has decided to use the "race" card and focus on blacks..so there must be a reason? To get everyone angry?

What is up with all this racial focus on blacks, my wife is Asian and she has been effected too. That is why she is going back to school to get a new and better job instead of staying on unemployment and food stamps for years. Wait, racism is over, we elected Obama to office, a (sort of ) black man is president, don't give me any crap about it being harder for you to get a job because of your color!!!!

Let me repeat the focus. For every 10 white Americans who are unemployed, there are 15 blacks who are unemployed. So let's try to figure out why the numbers are higher for blacks.

                                                                                  1) Some people believe that no matter how much education a black person may have, he wears his pants around his ankles, and talks funny.

                                                                                  2) Blacks take classes like Basket Weaving 101 (I've never actually seen this class offered at any colleges I attended.), and we all score low on aptitude tests.

                                                                                  3) Blacks want to earn 100,000.00 per year. (Hmmmm. I wonder how much the idiot who wrote that makes a year.) Yes. I'm guilty. I'm black, and I want to make at least 100,000.00 per year. That was one of the goals I set that motivated me to go to college.

                                                                                  4) Blacks want a handout. When a black man is sitting in front of you at a job interview, he's not there for a job. He wants a handout. Something goes hay wire in your mind, and suddenly you are a social worker at the welfare office in the state of Hell No.

                                                                                  5) Blacks should work harder than everyone else to prove ...

                                                                                  6) A Black person who grows up in Compton, and takes pride in where he comes from is some sort of insult to you. Somehow being from the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA, USA makes him less of a person. He should denounce his community for you to respect him. (I wonder if the person who made the remark about Compton has ever been there.)

                                                                                  7) Some people will never get it.

                                                                                  • 3 votes

Look at every business, there are blacks working everywhere--doctors, lawyers, the head of the AARP, the head of the American Cancer Society, in every HR office. Blacks have made huge advances--we elected a black president. Time to look around.

It is not a Black White society we are a multi national country founded by RED BROWN first.

Recognize the truth about where you call home. This is and was not ever white only land. And it also was not only the blacks who were slaves here. The catholic church and the Spaniards enslaved many a California Native American and Natives from south of our Current border.

Until we as a people learn the truth and support it. All this hogwash about White versus black will only continue. The whole English only idea is false as well. We do not speak as they do in the UK. We speak American. Even our spoken word has been altered by many different people over time.

Get over it the economy is bad and the gov is not going to create any jobs. We the people have to get back to not whining and do it ourselves.

My son and daugher-in-law are both out of work since March and I am about to be out of work. There is no recovery, people not collecting unemployment is not counted in the unemployed nor people who's benefits have run out are not included in the count. We can't get any help from the state how can $260.00 a week pay a mortage, utilites, medical expenses, food, it doesn't, lets not forget the needs of three children. The state says no help for us but I see people of race get all the help they need and then some what about us?

These people were able to pay a mortage and take care of their children until both parents got laid off. They used their savings to keep things going just don't assume all people are dead beats. And may God have mercy on you soul for being so heartless and non caring.
