Al Gore has been asked many times to debate global warming, and has refused. Now he gives an interview instead of a debate. I ask Al what properly vetted scientific evidence do you have to support this claim? I think I would accept an article from the National Enquirer before I believe the garbage from the supposed experts. As I have said before, if Al Gore is your spokesperson, you are in trouble.

Sure, we all know Palin is well informed on climate change and would never put politics ahead of our planet. She knows more than those damn scientists, doncha know. If she is wrong and the polar ice cap IS disappearing, well, um, oops, it must be Obama's fault.

• The reality is that if a bill like Cap and Trade passes, it will cost us all huge amounts of money in increased utility bills, taxes, etc. (more so for people living in rural areas). Can you afford to pay double for electricity, heat, gas, etc.? Can your neighbor?
• Scientists and advocates are making huge amounts of money on "global warming." Al Gore has made approximately $100 million on his book, movie, speaking fees, etc.
• Many are now pushing for the U.S. and other "rich countries" to pay for the costs to help developing countries reduce their greenhouse gases. Can you afford an additional tax to help India and China go green?
• The earth has been cooling for the last ten years in spite of increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.
• Human activities account for about 4% of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

We need an honest, open debate on this issue. We're not a Fascist country... are we?

Mark brought up a lot of great points. Al Gore made the "green" movement into a money making machine. It has already been considered and factored into all the calculations. If you had been paying attention, you would know that. Human-produced green house gas emissions (not just CO2) is still the major contributor to the current state of atmospheric deterioration.

I especially like the part of that show where one guest apologizes for being late because a drive that used to take 20 some minutes took an hour and half because permafrost thawing is buckling roads throughout central alaska. And, how you can easily see in satelite photos the steady northward retreat of the permafrost marked by dead and dying treecover, since the water that made up the permafrost drains and evavporates away very quickly, leaving a semi-arid desert behind.

There are literally millions of people I would listen to before the "Queen of Gag". $100 says that she was given the exact words to use and a ton of money to do the op-ed... enough to completely flip on her previous position... stupid.

The earth has been warming and cooling in cycles for at least the last 2 million years, but it has only been recently that con men, like Al Gore, have figured out how to profit from a scam where the people who support them ,will be long dead before they can realize they have been had.

I think both former Governor Palin and former Vice President Gore are both right and wrong. It's a 50/50 toss up. I think it would be foolish to deny a certain amount of earth warming isn't due to combustion from factories and vehicles. However, the earth does have normal cycles of heating up and cooling off. Plus, you must give credit to Governor Palin regarding the confiscated documents. That has been reported from several credible sources that documents were stolen indicating the earth's heating up isn't as dire as indicated. Which leads us back to Vice President Gore's concern regarding the polar ice caps. They are melting, that is obvious by just viewing any current satellite photographs. However, to what extent and at what rapid level of decline former Governor Palin would be a better judge. After all, she lived in that climate and was more experienced in that area of environmental changes than former Vice President Gore. I don't know if boycotting the upcoming summit is the answer, however, I would take the doomsday reports with a grain of salt, until all evidence has been properly reviewed. I guess it all comes down to which side of the coin you call - heads or tails...

Need to preface this with I'm nowhere near being a tree hugger. That being said I have 5 power plant smokestacks in view on my drive home every night while in heavy traffic, all this belching smoke and carbon may not be (solely) responsible for global warming but it surely can't be good for the planet.

Personally I wonder, how many folks who argue on behalf of business and their party against cutting carbon emissions raise hell when someone lights a cigarette up near them. If second hand smoke from tobacco is so flippin horrible, why is it okay for the power company to clog the sky with smoke?

Global Warming exists. It's not really global warming though, it's climate change. Scientists playfully use the term "Global Weirding", because it's not just everything getting hotter, it's also disrupting the temperature of the ocean currents, which controls almost all weather patterns in the world. This will result in drought, flooding, etc, to areas that typically do not receive them. In addition, the ocean level will rise (PLEASE don't dispute this, I might lose my faith in humanity). And yes, Mr. Gore is right in that the phenomenon of ozone degradation and climate change due to CO2 omissions is like Physics and Gravity...it's SCIENTIFIC FACT. Innumerable laboratory tests have confirmed that. This is why 98% of the world's scientists have reached the consensus that this is a real phenomenon.

Why did he get rich? Because he wrote books and did a movie about it, all of which were quite successful. He actually donated half of the movie proceeds to environmental associations. Just ask Ms. Palin about how profitable a book deal alone can be. She made $5 million on the bonus alone.

The most grave issue relevant to the continued existence of mankind is his failure to comprehend the science of ecology, which reveals how the Earth functions to support all life. Many of those literate in this science believe cutting back C02 emissions will not even be a "band-aid" fix.

Man is alive because of the Earth's natural ecosystems, the natural body and natural state of the Earth. Ecosystems are all interconnected, one to the other and function to create this planet's life-giving cycles, like the nitrogen cycle, which is interconnected to ecosystems' native animals and plants. Ecosystems do regulate the climate; what is on the surface of the Earth changes the dynamics of the climate. As mankind is paving the Earth's surface with dead planet products that create no living functions, like the living, one organism of an ecosystem, it is reasonable to assume mankind is playing Russian roulette with not only the climate, but the atmosphere and the entirety of the Earth's biogeochemistry.

How much hotter is the surface of the Earth becoming as it continues to be buried under acres and acres of hot, hot concrete, plaster, dead wood products and man-made constructions that do not regulate the climate, release oxygen, produce the nitrogen cycle, balance the gaseous composition of the atmosphere and create and renew a life-giving soil and govern the hydrological system.? Deforestation of terrestrial ecosystems for new shopping malls and strip malls heats up and dries out the climate. And, ecosystems are the Earth's natural sinkholes of C02!!!

Mankind is de-regulating the climate because he is burying, chopping, paving and concreting the living, physical body of the Earth. The more the individual is versed in the science of ecology, the more he comprehends how the Earth functions to support all life, and it has everything to do with ecosystems and the living parts that create the one living organism, an ecosystem or native animals and plants. An ecosystem is created and sustained by all it community members or native species.

Only the natural world is the life that is the Earth. Man's ongoing war with the Earth can only spell disaster as ecosystems are interconnected with feedbacks to not only the climate but to the very atmosphere, fresh water, food and life.

I'd rather trust the research of thousands of doctorate-level scientists over the course of the last 30 years than a rumor about a couple of emails. Just saying.

I'm afraid this issue is so politiciced that the only poeple who have the truth / facts are the scientists involved. Regardless of climate change, I see no reason not to pursue alternative energy. I recycle. I minimize driving. I don't buy non-essentials (energy used to manufacture). I'm all for solar, wind, nuclear, natural gas, clean coal, etc. But our country can pursue these things without the goofs in Carbonhagen and their political agendas. Why do we even need to debate the topic of wealth transfer?

If Al Gore has it wrong, there is a very heavy short term consequence: The political agenda of those fabricating the global warming threat are directly opposed to our national sovereignty and even our way of life. This is a powerful conflict between the extreme far left and democracy/capitalism.

We need to do something about global warming; however, when your soluttions are based on lies and undocumented evidence, wrong suppositions, your solution may well be part of the problem. We CAP and TAX America but meanwhile the rest of the world, especially China just keeps pumping out the greenhouse gases. The solutions are much simpler than one would imagine. Wind generator technology existed here in the 1940's and it is nothing new, but all the new contracts went to foreign countries, and the solar as well. The housing here is now put up so quickly and by those not even speaking English because it is cheap labor, and they don't know, don't care. I used to build quality homes with my father when I was a boy, solid workmanship, good windows, insulated around them, insulated the attic, had reciruclating fans which took the warm air upstairs and forced it back downstairs (warm air rises naturally), and this was back in the 1950's and 1960's. These houses are still standing and the people we built them for wanted these homes, weren't wealthy, but they wanted a quality house and the bank agreed with them.

There are more solutions, but you will not have any progress if you let developers devlope farm lands, cattle lands, and cover over perfectly good farm and cattle pasture with houses and shopping centers. Birth control was great, reduce the size of your family, but the minorities weren't listening and the family size is usually 6-10, not 1 or 2.. While it may not seem complicated afer the 2nd child, the man and the woman need to go to a doctor and be neutralized, regardless of race, have the fun with none of the overpopulation. The walls of the houses need to be insulated and built well when they are built, by putting dirt or hay inbetween the outer layers, and sealing it off. The old "sod or soddie" homes were built that way, and contrary to popular belief cost less to heat and maintain than the fancy "Green" houses.

What we have is a group of educated idiots designing these programs, who are clueless about the environment, including Al Gore and Ed Begly Jr, just to mention a few, and whose motives appear more to make a fortune out of the dupes they dupe, than it is helping the environment. Gore could help by quit flying his private leer jet and turning down the heating temperature in his house. Years ago the City I lived in had this program to turn down your furnace....and then the next year went in for a rate hike because the consumption was down. Yeah, buddy, shoot yourself in the foot. Nobody after that cared what they printed in their monthly flyer. I installed a solar heater on my house, home made, and it reduced my monthly heating bill by 90%. The city came out and wanted to see if I'd tapped in behind their meter, and you could tell the code guy didn't like it because there was nothing he could do about it. I had to open the sliding doors on my house in the winter and let the heat out! No moving parts, only cost about $500 to build, and was completely fireproof, concrete, metal, glass and two mirrors...that was all!

1) Kyoto was ratified in 1997, three years before you and Bubba left office. If this was so important, why didn't YOU get something done?

2) Why no discussion of nuclear power? That's the only viable way to make a major impact in greenhouse gases. Nuclear is not politically correct as we all know. If this was really about CO2, nuclear would be the solution. It is a GOP idea to increase nuclear power, so Gore is against it. This is not about the environment, this is about politics.

3) Why no discussion of natural gas pipelines? Natural Gas burns clean. See above, not politically correct. It is a GOP idea to increase natural gas, so Gore is against it. Again, politics not sound science or policy rules the day with Al Gore.

1) Meteorologists - Cooling for the last 11 years - their ground temperature stations are actually maintained and not infringed upon by sprawl.

2) IPCC report 2007 - of the actual 600 scientists (2500 is the total staff including those who word process, print, collate, and buy the doughnuts and coffee) 60% disagree with the catastrophic conclusions of the IPCC report. Yes, each participating scientist is alloted space to give their own version of conclusions at the end of the report. The press and most people don't read the whole report.

3) Through 2003 - all planets in our Solar system warmed at the same rate.

4) The University of East Anglia email breach shows, and this is just what I have read. Computer models that changing data doesn't change the curve much at all, fellow scientists being held out of the loop on current information, peer reviews done by sypathizers/friends only instead of a cross section of science.

5) Solar scientists charts of the solar activity curve matches, other than anomalies, nearly perfectly with our temperatures as recorded.

I think most people would agree with the statement that the earth is a biosphere, in that it is an ecological system that supports life.

According to wikipedia a biosphere is defined as, "the global sum of all ecosystems. It can also be called the zone of life on Earth. From the broadest biophysiological point of view, the biosphere is the global ecological system integrating all living beings and their relationships, including their interaction with the elements of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere."

You don't have to be a scientist to appreciate the fact that in an ecosystem all of the constituent parts are linked together in some fashion, and that changes in one part of the ecosystem can affect the entire ecosystem. Look no further than your own neighborhood or community to see the effects that human activities are having on air quality, water quality, and animal and plant life and human health.

The US Census Bureau estimates the population of the earth to be about 6.8 billion people and growing. Knowing the impact that population growth and human activities have had on local ecosystems, I cannot understand the logic or reasoning behind those who would argue that human activity is not affecting global climate conditions. Afterall,, climate is part of the ecosystem. We can argue over how much change and what specific factors are contributing to the accelerated climate and ecological changes, but personal attacks and name calling are not going to get us any closer to the answers we need to plan a constructive and effective response to these harmful changes.

If we want to help solve these problems and preserve and improve the biosphere for our children and grandchildren, than let's stop the ad hominem attacks and get down to some intelligent and productive discourse on this issue.

Global warming is real. The first time I heard of an unusual effect was in 1973..in Alaska. Retreating glacers that had never retreated in the oral tradition of the native people. Palin is ignorant. I find this story very interesting. In the 60's when the Pentagon Papers were stolen and released to the public, bringing to light the way we were brought into the Vietnam War by President Johnson, the event was seen by the press as bold and forthright. Yet these emails were 'stolen'! The break-in to get the Pentagon Papers was also thievery but now is glorified!

The bottom line is this: those emails, however they have reached the public, show that the scientists did not use the very scientific methods that they claim they used. The emails show that they made up data to fit an theory. That then puts the whole theory as suspect. All the data is suspect now. It is at best anecdotal!

Why is it that Al Gore continually REFUSES to debate with Lord Moncton or professor Richard Lindzen of MIT, Why????

LORD MONCKTON: Aha. There is one obstacle that they are going to face this they go down that route and they know it. It's this: That we now know for certain by measurement that the effect of CO2 and all greenhouse gases on temperature globally is less than 1/6th of what the UN says it is. This was a paper published just last month by the gallant professor Richard Lindzen of MIT who I'm sure you've heard of. He's the Alfred piece professor of planetary and atmospheric sciences.

LORD MONCKTON: He professor Richard Lindzen of MIT is a lovely man and he is the guy who really understands what's happening in the atmosphere. He has done a dazzlingly simple but dazzlingly careful measurement that was taken in 20 years; he's been accumulating the data so that he could do it. And he's just published the result. The amount of outgoing radiation escaping into space is supposed to reduce enormously as the temperature warms down here. That's the official theory because of all the greenhouse gases getting in the way. What is actually happening is that nearly all of it is getting out into space just as before. So the warming effect of CO2 over the whole of the next 100 years is going to be well below 2 Fahrenheit degrees, just negligible, it might even be 1 Fahrenheit degrees. And now that that is known by measurement, all of the UN's report on which this treaty is based are out of date, and the Supreme Court's own judgment in Massachusetts V. EPA where they said CO2 was a pollutant because it might cause warming are now also out of date. Because the facts have changed, and it's now been a measured result. There's no argument with it. Nobody's dared to argue with this paper.

LORD MONCKTON: That's right. And the one thing I think we can very safely say is that that is not consistent with a story of global warming. But now that we've got this measured result, all the previous UN reports were based on computer models. Now, computer models are another word for guesswork. They were just guessing. And their guesses were wildly implausible. I'm actually feeling very smart because a year ago in the Journal of Physics and Society, I published a long paper which established by theoretical need that the warming for a doubling of CO2 this century would be less than 2 degrees Fahrenheit. And I published that result a year before Dick Lindzen did it by measurement. But it's Dick's paper with his formidable authority behind it and because he's done it by straightforward measurement of the comparison between changes in surface temperature and changes in outgoing radiation, that is the paper that will bring this scare finally to an end.

This is another example of Washington trying to get a Carbon Tax put into place which will be another burden on the people of America. Your energy bill will go up (like it hasn't already) along with other things like gas for your car. There is no global warming...it is a HOAX. It is being used to put money into Al Gore's back pocket and other in our elists, self-serving, corrupt policians' pockets, while sticking it to the little guy (you and me). For Christ sake, it snowed in Houston, Texas last week up to 3"...and it hasn't done in a very long time. It was 26 degrees in East Texas yesterday and the first day of winter is not until 12-21. Last winter was the coldest winter we have had in 10 years. You have to understand that on Christmas day in East Texas, the temperature is usually around 60 degrees, and that is normal. This is another scare tactic that the supporters of global warming are using to feather their nests. The scientists are manipulating data so they can keep their jobs. The polar bears are not disappearing as earlier thought...they are actually increasing. And the big question is...if co2 is causing this disaster and that we are causing it by breathing, how long can you hold your breath? Ridiculous. If you want to help with global warming, stop cutting the rain forrests and plant more trees as they convert your breath back into air.

Owl Gore will fight this to the end, at least until Cap & Trade is Law. All of his investments are betting on the EPA running our economy. If he loses, he loses big! However, if this hoax transpires into some form of enslavement of the American people, we are all doomed.

The climate on the Earth changes - this is a fact supported by millions of years of history. The issue here is that people want to say that humans cause this because if they can get everyone to believe that then they can sell us stuff to stop our own extinction. Fear does sell.

The data is pretty clear that we are on a cooling trend. So scientist get paid to twist that data because they can make millions if only we believe we are going to die because of the global warming we are causing.

Sorry but to know both sides of the story is very relevant. The other two theories over why global warming is happening has very significant consequences to our way of life. If scientists don't get together to find out what is really happening then we will not be prepared for the right eventuality. I suggest you stop listening to one side of the story and do a little research into why a significant amount of scientists say they can disprove the agenda Al Gore is pushing. I am not a scientist and don't understand completely the arguments of all sides but if enough people become aware and demand to know the truth instead of blindly following "the one who screams the loudest" then maybe scientists will be forced to work together to find the right answer. With that said I do believe what we put into our air, water and soil has consequences and should be controlled but from what I understand about the arguments that I have read global warming is not one of them.

It is hard to even react to what you said because it is so desturbing. Lets use one example - The EPA wants to tax my farmer friend because his cows fart and burp! I am not making this up its true. If the Cap and Trade program passes this is exactly what will happen. Now, if the EPA is able to override congress and implement punitive taxes on companies for climate changes that scientist can't even agree on then their(Companies) abilty to compete or even stay in business is almost impossible. What ever is going to happen to us isn't going to be overnight. We have time to get the data right and make good decisions off responsible data. According to Van Jones, the professed communist and one of Obama's Czars openly stated he wanted to use his position to crush our republic and replace it with facism. Although he did not use the word facism he did respond to a reporter who asked him about his fascist policies with " How is that capitalism working out for you?".

Al Gore is a snake oil saleman and nothing else. How do you explain the the largest Viking burial grounds are located in Greenland? Did they get out their little Bobcat tractors and dig through the permafrost? As for rising oceans it has happened before without mankinds help. There are fossils in the desert and on top of mountains. One good volcano blast could wipe out mankind and any other oxygen breathing animal.

I think everyone is missing the point. The earth is warming, but not from CO2 gases or from the sun.

The cause is the heat coming from inside the earth itself. After all, the great professor Al Gore clearly stated that the earth's core is several MILLION degrees. It is this extreme internal heat that is melting the polar ice caps.

Tell Al to have some drilling companies drill down to vent this excess heat out of the planet before we all catch fire spontaneously.

Quite simply, pollution of a river or lake is easily proven and ended. Whereas the entire AGW debate is skewed with political ideology and questionable data.

The problem is simple. If we could actually prove what was going on and why, we could remedy it just as we have with the overt pollution of the past. However, until we can be presented with solid data, unskewed by political ideology, and come to an honest consensus, we will never be able to address anything.

The earth has known hot and cold periods since the dawn of time, and we cannot yet say for sure if CO2 is causing anything. I do not accept the premise that some are content to deny science and allow the world to be destroyed just for their short-term financial gain. The science is in question.

I wish this was a simple as acid rain, or CFC's in the atmosphere, but it isn't.

From time to time we hear that various places on earth have been “warming much faster than the rest of the planet – as predicted by “the models.” One of the places commonly mentioned in that list is the Arctic, based largely on 30 years of satellite data. Fortunately though, we are not limited by 30 years of satellite data, as the Danish Meteorological Institute has records going back to 1958 and GISSTEMP has even longer records.
Below is a visual comparison of DMI 1958 Arctic temperatures vs. 2009, showing that temperatures have hardly changed since the start of their record.

I have my doubts about human activity affecting the climate of the world. Palin adds nothing new to the debate. I'm sure she understands less about it than I do. She's just regurgitating vague arguments against it. So if she's going to be the spokesperson for the anti-warming crowd, it makes me a little less skeptical.

Gore has taken on the mantle of being the spokesperson for the global warming issue, and Palin seems to be usurping the opposite stance from anyone that could be considered credible. Tho who this person would be is unclear. As we all know, a spokesperson does not have to be knowledgeable of the issue they are representing. We have a Congress full of these "spokespeople.

If this robbery cap and trade passes, there will not be very many people naming their kids Albert, Allen, Ally or the like.

Although Gore is a threat to some he is not unfounded, and like most who make discoveries or set to expound science in fact as a warning or to explain the world with facts, findings are often rejected. Galileo, for just example, was ridiculed by the government and his peers, only to find out he was not just correct but advanced our society in thought and research.

I found Palin's (Sarah) multi-syllabic words and sentences impressive, not only can she make babies, but she can now distort science and degrade science. Why some of these people aren't on Amish farms is questionable, they (she) could find comfort and a culture tailor fit for her purified lifestyle. You do know conservatism is a "lifestyle". To be certain after this book sale and reuniting with Republican foes, the thought of actually living on an Amish farm could be a contradiction to the acquistions post publishing royalty checks.

Al Gore the man who said the center of the earth was millions of degrees hot, and claims to have invented the internet. He is the one man that can make Sarah Palin look smart.

Gore emphasized that climate change should be a bipartisan issue. "It used to be," he said.

It shouldn't be even a political issue. It isn't the climate that will ruin us, it's the politics.

The earth has not warmed for the last 12 years. It is right on target with the fluctuations with warming, cooling.

This is just another policy (cap and trade) to make us pay more taxes, higher prices, and be controlled.

It is an hypothesis. Accurate and credible DATA must be collected and analyzed. Many sources of the DATA are possible. The DATA must be reproducible. The hypothesis must be TESTABLE. The TESTING must be reproducible for many different observers. That's science...........

The entire rest of the planet was warmer, these aren't theories, these are the numbers. Even with the colder weather in No. America the global averages are still higher in 2009 than average. Virtually every year of the last decade was a record breaker - not just above average!

We are not talking about the weather in America, we are talking about the world's climate, but conservative deniers think that America IS the world and willfully confuse the two in order to complicate debate. They were eliminated because the sun is in a minimum right now and we are experiencing a maximum in temperatures. There is no data that synchs solar activity with recorded temperature. None (except the BS rumor that exists on the internet). Ocean currents have not shifted significantly and even if they had it would only affect regional climates not the net total of temperature increase we are experiencing. In other words if you put ice into a drink, whether you stir it or not the average temperature of both the ice and the liquid should be the same. Any increase in heat must come from external sources. Volcanic activity has not significantly increased over the past 500 years and the level of the gases from them in our atmosphere cannot account for the increases in temperature we see. For these reasons and more these ideas have been eliminated.

I don't have to guess. Inside ice cores there are bubbles of the atmosphere trapped there from when the ice froze. By analyzing the gases it has been shown that there are certain isotopes that are formed in greater and lesser abundance with regards to temperature. Since we have a good deal of directly measured temperatures for over 100 years it is possible to verify the method of using the isotopes in the ice by direct comparison. With the two methods calibrated to each other the isotope method gives us a way to measure the historic climate temps. Also in the bubbles is CO2. It's levels correspond to temperature meaning that higher CO2 always equals higher temps. The levels of CO2 that humans produce and we are currently experiencing are much higher than anything in the ice.

No, the planet does not have a rectum...duh. There are thousands of climatologists all working independently to measure temperatures around the globe. There are also satellites, ocean buoys, weather balloons, local meteorological data, etc. Millions of data points taken hundreds of different ways at thousands of locations. That information is publicly available. It is averaged to get the global mean temperature.

It is unremarkable that a small Nautilus sub on the surface would be surrounded by thin or no ice. The sub had sonar to search for small regions of open water (polynyas) through which to surface. These are small areas that are opened for short periods in the ice as the wind drives the ice apart. These regions of open water only persist for durations of hours not weeks and most are only a few hundred yards wide. The ice did reform on that particular site because the wind drew the ice back together after a few hours, or so says the official Navy report. These small open spaces should not be confused with whole ice free regions of the Arctic.

Scroll down and look at the TLT trend plot. One can easily spot the denier's deception from this. But, such data says quite more than a thousand words. Look at the HUGE drop in lower stratospheric temperatures (TLS). This is the death knell for the other part of the denier's mythology "the sun is reponsible for global warming." If the sun were responsible, both the stratosphere and the troposphere would be warming. If it is CO2, then the troposphere warms while the stratosphere cools, as discussed here, where you can see scientists arguing over the exact mechanism:

Mars CO2 is 95% (>32% carbon) of the atmosphere. But it is warming rate is a nearly identical to the rate of earth. Venus also is 96% CO2 (32% carbon) and is warming at a the same rate as the earth. Earth is .039% Carbon.

In this case what she is saying is simply wrong and based more on her own politics than on anything tangible. And you can't just say someone is right without actually looking at the totality of the information. If you want to believe that Sarah's version of addition actually adds up, that's your problem. Interesting point about Venus...I didn't know that. But I'd like to delve a little deeper. When you say "rate" what do you mean? Do you mean on a degree by degree basis or percentage basis? Due to the three planets' proximities to the sun, temperatures, atmospheric makeup/pressure, degrees vs. percentages creates a major difference when referring to "rate."

If all three warmed by 1% (for example), that would tell me it's probably the sun. If all three warmed by 1 degree, it indicates differing percentages and shows that factors beside the sun are at play. Plus in the case of Venus, you have to consider that there is a ceiling to how hot it can get, meaning that as you approach that ceiling the "rate" slows.

See post 2.40 to debunk the "its the sun" part of the denier mythology. Then, as far as the other planets are concerned, realize that we have no long term temperature record for them, and that their "climates" are governed by entirely different mechanisms.

What the science says...

Not all planets are warming - some are cooling. Of those that are warming, the reasons are largely known and are phenomenon unique to each planet.

There are three fundamental flaws in the 'other planets are warming' argument:

1. Not all planets are warming - some are cooling
2. The sun has shown no long term trend since 1950
3. There are explanations for why other planets are warming

Not all planets in the solar system are warming

Only 6 planets or moons out of the 100+ bodies in the solar system have been observed to be warming. On the other hand, Uranus is cooling (Young 2001)

Solar activity isn't increasing

More crucially, the whole theory that a brightening sun is causing global warming falls apart when you consider solar output hasn't risen over the past 30 years (when warming has been highest) according to direct satellite measurements that find no rising trend since 1978, sunspot numbers which have leveled out since 1950, the Max Planck Institute reconstruction that shows irradience has been steady since 1950 and solar radio flux or flare activity which shows no rising trend over the past 30 years. Ironically, it's the sun's close correlation with Earth's temperature that proves it has little to do with the last 30 years of global warming.

So what is causing warming on those other planets?

Of course that begs the question - what's causing warming on other planets? With the exception of Pluto (which is still an enigma to astronomers who recently voted it out of the planet registry in a moment of pique), climate change on other planets are fairly understood:

• Martian climate is primarily driven by dust and albedo and there is little empirical evidence that Mars is showing long term warming. More on Mars...
• Neptune's orbit is 164 years so current brightening is a seasonal response (Neptune's southern hemisphere is heading into summer). More on Neptune...
• Triton's warming is due to the moon approaching an extreme southern summer, a season that occurs every few hundred years.
• Jupiter's storms are fueled by the planet's own internal heat (the sun's energy is 4% the level of solar energy at Earth). When several storms merge into one large storm (eg - Red Spot Jr), the planet loses its ability to mix heat, causing warming at the equator and cooling at the poles. More on Jupiter...
• Pluto's warming consists of two observations 14 years apart noting a difference in atmospheric thickness which implies warming - scientists are unable to explain why yet. But considering Pluto's orbit is equivalent to 248 Earth years, this says nothing about climate change. It's like saying Earth is warming when comparing winter to summer. Plus Pluto is more than 30 times farther away from the Sun than the Earth is. If the Sun were warming up enough to affect Pluto at that vast distance, it would blowtorch the Earth.

Maybe, Dr. Smith, you ought to get out and have a public debate with Lord Christopher Monckton and benefit us all with all that you apparently know? I believe that would be a completely one-sided affair as he, Monckton, destroyed the efforts to get Gore's quantumly disproved bit of popculture genuine-science-FREE entertainment "An Inconvenient Truth". Knowing that, the earth had already existed from an earlier time and had been damaged or destroyed. The 7 days was then a "re-ordering". This fits with the graphs of temperature cycles from the Ice cores that range from 13,500 - 15,000 years. This fits with all the geological layering of the earth we know today. Some put this current cycle at 12,800 years old. i.e. 15,000 years fits with the prophecy of revelations.

First of all, Lucy was only found 40 percent complete. Scientists say Ardi is NEARLY complete (maybe you should state your facts clearly too). Like you said, we are just a common ancestor to primates, unfortunately the furthest our genes can be traced back to is around the time of the Toba eruption I think, for the main point that humanity was almost wiped out. Considering that Ardi was just recently found, and scientists are still studying it, I am not using it as a credible argument. Only in the past decade are scientists not sure whether or not Lucy actually walked, because if she did not, than that would mean evolution would have had to take a step back in time since Ardi could walk. Humans have hardly any effect with their pollution???? Very interesting theory there. Sharp rise in cancer and other illnesses in areas of high chemical pollution, loss of coral reefs due to oceanic pollution (and yes that HAS been proven), and the list goes on. You can't tell me that all of the pollution we put into the atmosphere with our airplanes, space travel, as well as the low-level pollutants that rise into the air stream, isn't having a disastrous effect on our planet and the climate.

Why do the scientists who are against Global Warming have no credibility? Are there not two sides to every story? Coral reefs are another matter, all scientists say is they are being killed by Global Warming, but considering Global Warming has not been debunked, you cannot truly say who is killing the coral reefs. Have you ever heard of H.A.A.R.P.? It is said they can control the weather, yet no one pays attention to them. I just do not feel it is right to make all of humanity pay for something the government can easily be doing. Why does no one take the account that sun has been warming up lately into effect? There are so many possibilities out there for Global Warming (even though the Earth is also said to be cooling) yet the only explanation the government gives is human emissions. It has even been said that a volcano gives off more emissions than humans. With so many possibilities and the government only saying one is credible (the one that happens to make them money) THAT is why I find it hard to believe.Also, the young ones? They have so many planes showing up they have to move them to different airports! I am young enough that in the course of the next sixty years ( like you have seen the past sixty years) people will be griping about how humans are running mankind into an ice age. So you must remember the 70's? Everyone was scared that we were going to have an ice age for THOUSANDS of YEARS! I do not believe it is mankind doing the problem, I think it is the government. I think that coal, oil, gas, iron ore, are not the main problems, and that people need to start thinking of alternative ways global warming could be happening if it is. I'm not saying I buy into Al Gore's doomsday theories on global warming or anything. Do I think that humans are having an effect on the environment? Sure. But it could be a natural trend of the planet over hundreds of years, and since our documentation on climate trends doesn't cover hundreds of years... it's hard to say.

However, humans can have an effect on the environment, so it's not out of the question either. I'm sure you learned all about the peppered moths in England during the Industrial Revolution, and how before the revolution, peppered moths were light colored, but after the build up of industry, the light colored ones died from predation because the bark of the trees they perched on were darkened by pollution. So they evolved into darker colored moths. And once standards were implemented for pollution, and the environment was cleaned up, the lighter colored moths evolved again.

So humans can have an effect on the environment.

But I'll be honest... I can't take anything Al Gore or Sarah Palin says seriously.

My 1968 car is close to being driven for the last time until spring (4000 miles in 15 years is it's contribution to AGW) and my truck has yet to go out today since I'm grouping my travels into one trip in a little while. But yet 140 private jets and 1200 limos were hard at work delivering these wealth redistribution jackasses to Copenhagen Monday. Think those limos aren't going to be idling to stay warm before picking up these nimrods?? Think shuttling those jets around Europe since there wasn't enough room at Copenhagen's airport was "Carbon Neutral". These blowhards are a perfect example of why most of us are wising up to this scam. Think maybe Charters could have been worked out so planes traveling over there were full? Or are Charter flights and commercial flights only for the "little people"?? I've always practiced energy conservation (or at least for the last 20+ years) and recycling since I believe in environmental protection. Hundreds of scientists and climatologists around the world have signed a petition countering the claims made by Gore and these scientists. Want even more proof this issue needs to be explored further before costly sanctions are imposed? The man who first came up with the theory of global warming, and Al Gore's mentor on the subject at Harvard, Roger Revelle, refuted his own theory (he actually called it a hoax) after over 30 years of studying climate change. Al Gore, of course, claims this change of heart was due to Dr. Revelle's advanced age and not based on his decades of studying emperical evidence. So, the man who came up with the theory, along with hundreds (over 700) of the most renowned scientists and climatologists in the world believe, at the very least, that this subject is far from clear-cut yet people on this thread can say unequivocally that man is causing the world to boil over??? And they are getting their information from a man who is not only not a scientists, but has hundreds of millions of dollars wagered on the whole world buying in to this "theory." Think of what we could be doing with the billions of dollars that are spent each year funding scientific studies on the perceived threat of global warming? Think of what could be done with the billions of dollars being spent on making every part of our life "greener." Now think of who profits from these initiatives. John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel and highly repected climatologist and friend of Revelle stated that Revelle had completely changed his mind regarding global warming. Coleman has written extensively on his findings and on his dealing with Revelle prior to his passing.

Again, ask yourself who could profit more from their statements? Revelle's daughter for claiming her father continued to steadfastly believe in his science, or Coleman who claims otherwise. What you are doing is using a politically driven statistical calculation in which the start date of the period being looked at was selected SPECIFICALLY because it would show what appeared to be a cooling trend, specifically, 1998 summer. Pick ANY other starting date before or after that and the trend is warmer.

If you are going to print FACTUAL LIES, at least try not to pick one that has been debunked everywhere.

For an economy to be sustainable, you need nothing more than producers making products that consumers want at an affordable price. I don't advocate the waste of our natural resources, but by the same token, every tree isn't sacred. We should recycle so long as it doesn't need to be subsidized to be cost effective. We should utilize our oil and gas reserves while looking for true alternative energy sources. We should be building nuke plants not wind mills. (yes you can put it in my back yard) We should continue to look at mans influence on the environment and take appropriate measures when there is an undeniable link between cause and affect, the current man made global warming does not meet that test. We need to study the benefits of a warmer climate, and there are many, longer growing seasons, less energy consumption to name a few.

Eric, everyone will pay for cap and trade, everyone regardless of who initially is targeted to pay for it. What happens when it costs more for a producer to make a product? Does the producer absorb those costs? NO, they get passed on to consumers, same goes for taxing producers, just adds more to the cost of production.

More nuke plants will only shorten the life of our limited reserves of uranium. The latest estimate I saw, IF the US (forget the rest of the world) were to build 100 more nuke plants, WE would deplete the world's uranium sources within 40 years MAX and most likely within 20 years. Then, what do we do with those toxic facilities that CAN'T be converted to other fuels like a coal fired unit can?
