NEW YORK — For the second straight year, comedian Kathy Griffin ushered in the new year by saying something vulgar on CNN.

During the network's live New Year's Eve broadcast from Times Square, Griffin was joking with co-host Anderson Cooper about how to pronounce the first name of "balloon boy" Falcon Heene when she mumbled something that sounded a little like "Falcon" and a lot like the F-word.

Cooper hung his head, shook it and said "You're terrible," before resuming his banter.

The network said in a statement Friday that it "regrets that profanity was used during our New Year's Eve coverage."

During the same show a year ago, Griffin gleefully shouted at a heckler in the crowd and made a joke implying that the man performed gay sex acts for a living.

In a statement released by her publicist Friday, Griffin made light of the "balloon boy" joke: "Like every other serious reporter covering the now infamous balloon boy hoax, I struggled to pronounce his name 'Falcon' correctly and have gotten a kick out of how many ways I've heard it pronounced by other serious reporters. Just add me to that list and happy new year!"

Asked whether Griffin would be invited back next year, CNN spokeswoman Shimrit Sheetrit said planning for the 2011 celebration hadn't yet begun.

What a sad thing that a seemingly intelligent woman can only resort to vulgarity to get a laugh. Must mean she is out of original material.

And who would have a problem pronouncing Falcon? Is it not pronounced like the bird of prey - Falcon? Such a sad excuse for both Kathy Griffin and CNN. I am glad I was not watching this with my grandchildren. No need to watch Kathy Griffin anymore. I will just change the channel when she comes on, and it won't matter what channel I am watching, it will be changed. I don't need to be subjected to her type of humor.

so I take it the only comedy you like is Bill Cosby ?

or Bob Hope ? Lucille Ball ? yet both of them had mouths like sailors ! Especially Lucy !

Don't like it ? Don't watch. that's great. But your assessment on her only resorting to vulgarity or out of material shows me you really haven't watched her standup or series on Bravo which shows your clueless to her performance .

she is a comedian in the same vein as Don Rickles ( love him ! ) , Lisa Lampanelli ( love her . now that's vulgar !! she makes Kathy Griffin look like a saint ) and Redd Foxx , can't forget Sarah Silverman !!

very funny people !

Lisa Lampanelli ( love her . now that's vulgar !! she makes Kathy Griffin look like a saint )

Now that would be a New Year's show worth watching. Even I blush when I listen (or watch) Lisa Lampanelli.

I think Kathy is funny, but her profanity does get a bit much at times. Personally, I'm stunned that she would make fun of a child - that's beyond rude and I would not have expected that from her. But, if Cooper were truly offended by her "vulgarity," then Griffin would not have been on the stage with him. He can have his choice of celebrities to share that podium with him on New Year's Eve.

I just don't see it. I've watched her on the tv show 'NewsRadio', I've seen her stand-up, and it never once occurred to me to laugh at anything she has said. I just don't find her funny. Maybe it's just me.

I do, however, respect the fact that she does alot of work for the GI's serving overseas, doing comedy gigs from the Green Zone to Walter Reed. Props.

People who use "just a word" on television in order to promote themselves and their vulgar nightclub act should be horsewhipped.

Horsewhipped? Why not cut out her tongue if you want to go all medieval.

When anyone books Kathy G they know full well what to expect - shock value, and plenty of it. In fact it's probably standard in her contract. So if it is good for ratings, she will continue to have a career, if not then she will be dropped. It's like that free market deal I thought you conservative types were in favour of.

Seriously, no one is forced to watch.

What a bunch of hypocrites these censors are. Here's some other vulgar statements that were made on CNN and otehr netwoprks, that they didn't get bent out of shape for.

"death panels", "healthcare reform is the first step towards socialism", "Glen Beck", "Rush Limbaugh" (yes, I went there).

There are many others.

We watched this and never noticed her ever saying any swear words. I think that people expected her to drop the F-bomb so they were looking too hard for it. What we saw was that she seemed to be making fun of how Anderson Cooper pronounced falcon. If she ever swore, it was not noticeable.

I am neither a fan or a hater of Griffin, but seriously....out of all the crap we hear on regular t.v. now days and they are going to nit-pick this? I mean, even the stuff on supposed "kid" channels is becoming disgusting.

I say clean it all up or stop @!$%#ing about the one person doing it. You cannot have it both ways.

So now that is what we have become. We accept the fact that people, especially those in Hollywood are allowed to use profanity on TV when are children are around?

I was not picking on Kathy Griffin, I think that we don't need to swear, what point does it get across. My granddaughter, who is in middle school, told me she and her friends were saying, damn this and damn that. I told her the she does not need to swear to get a point across just need to have the facts. And the fact is, we don't need to swear.

In the 93 years that my mom was alive I never heard her say the F word. Why could she live 93 years and find that she did not need to use that type of profanity?

And you are right, I do have the right and the power to turn her off. I have watched her stand up and have never found her funny, so why watch a comedian that isn't funny?

To each his own. And yes, Hope was funny but I don't remember him using profanity, site me which skit he used it in. Don't remember Lucy using profanity on TV either, site me a skit in which she used it. If I remember correctly, when Bob and Lucy were running you could not even use the word @!$%# on TV.

Call me up tight, what ever, just don't see the need to swear especially when our children are around. What does a swear word accomplish anyways???????

Bob Hope ? sure he was .... here is an example of a complaint ..I can't find the original story but a written complaint.

Lucy didn't use profanity on tv ... no one did at the time due to censors. but in their live acts ? that was different.

Farmgirl - you're aware this was a New Year's Eve show? In other words, not prime time.

Let your kids watch adult fare at your discretion - it's called parenting and it's not the tv's job.

Kathy Griffin should dare to insult Muslims.

Then she would get a Fatwah put on her in no time flat, and we wouldnt have to worry about her foul mouth anymore.

But our dear Kathy only insults the feeble-minded and small children. Although, come to think of it she did insult Anderson Cooper once. Ok, the feeble-minded and small children thing still stands.

kathy griffin is a juvenile, an adolescent who likes to get attention by using bad words. Her comedy is just plain not funny -- an inside joke for the inflated egos of hollywood, and pure pandering to the identity politics of gay leftists. She is like bill maher, a 12 year old intellect that passes for an intellectual among the dogmatics on the left.
