— A month after a Utah mother of two small boys disappeared, Susan Powell’s friends have launched what they say is an unprecedented social media blitz in an effort to find her.

The organizers of the effort hope that the 72-hour blitz that began at 10 a.m. ET Monday can get millions involved in the search for Powell. The 28-year-old woman disappeared on the night of Dec. 6 while her husband has said he was on an overnight camping trip with their sons, ages 4 and 2.

“We’re asking everybody to send an e-mail to five friends and ask them to forward it to five of their friends so that the e-mail can spread all across the country,” Kiirsi Hellewell, coordinator of the effort, told TODAY’s Matt Lauer Monday from Utah. “We’re also asking people to spread it on Twitter, on Facebook, on YouTube, on their blogs, podcasts — any way possible.”

While it has become common to set up Web sites and Facebook pages for missing persons, Hellewell said no one has ever sought to use every form of social media in a coordinated campaign to help find someone.

Taking to YouTube, Twitter and Facebook
“As far as I know, I don’t think anybody’s ever used social media like this before to find a missing person,” Hellewell said. “We’re kind of breaking new ground and trying to figure it out as we go along.”

As part of the blitz, Hellewell is asking people to view an 85-second YouTube slideshow made up of images of Susan Powell. The pictures show an attractive and apparently happy young woman with hair ranging from brunet to light blond.

People can follow @FindSusan on Twitter and tweet about her using the hashtag #findsusan. Anyone wishing to join the e-mail campaign is asked to send a message to findsusanpowell@gmail.com with “I want to help” in the subject line. Participants will receive a return e-mail with instructions about how to proceed.

Although police in the Salt Lake City suburb of West Valley City have named Susan’s husband, Josh Powell, as a person of interest in the disappearance, there has been little for investigators to go on. The couple had been having marital problems, according to Susan’s friends, and she had even considered leaving her husband, who has been described as becoming increasingly controlling.

But police say that Powell, who has moved in with his father in Washington state and plans to move his sons there permanently, has hired a prominent defense attorney and has declined to submit to questioning. On the day his wife was reported missing, Powell told police he returned with the boys from their camping trip to find she was no longer at home. Susan’s purse and cell phone were found in the home.

Holding on to hope
Susan’s friends and relatives continue to believe that she’s alive.

“I really hope so. We can’t let ourselves let go of that,” Hellewell told Lauer.

“I absolutely hold out hope that she’s alive,” Susan’s father, Charles Cox, said in a separate interview with NBC News. “As a father, I have no choice. I must maintain the hope that she’s alive.”

Cox told reporters that he was able to see his grandsons for several hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. “We went through the motions of Christmas, but it didn’t fill the emptiness,” he wrote on a Facebook page dedicated to his missing daughter.

Hellewell said Cox told her the children, Charlie and Braden, seem to be coping with the loss of their mother.

“He says that they seem fairly happy,” Hellewell told Lauer. “They seem fairly OK. They miss their mom. They don’t know why she’s gone, but they’re doing OK.”

Josh Powell has attended a vigil for his missing wife in Puyallup, Wash., but he has seemed to avoid contact with his in-laws. Susan’s friends and family have been baffled by his unwillingness to talk to police.

“I don’t think anybody can understand why a husband would act this way. It’s very confusing and it’s hard to know what to think,” Hellewell said.

I totally agree. She's dead and they are in denial. It doesn't help to find her. She isn't a missing person in the sense that she has been kidnapped and may be alive somewhere else. She was murdered by her husband and his actions are clear to that effect. Look up real cases where the woman had been kidnapped and the husband wasn't responsible. They were distraught and worked tirelessly with law enforcement to find there wives. This guy is a snake. They need to get out some cadaver dogs where his rental pinged a response on the GPS and go there. It is understandable for friends and family to hope and wish she were alive, but, as they say, if wishes were wings...

yes, I have issues cmon ever seen your friend get her @$$ beat? How about seeing a cozy murder/suicide on a college campus? Did your little sister get raped at age 11? How about going to the cops with evidence after a sexual assault that they ignore and the guy goes on to stab a mother of 2 52 times? Was your 23 year old coworker kidnapped at gunpoint by her "loved one" and shot and killed after getting a restraining order?

Did you come from a state where GOP gubernatoria l candidates say"women should just lie back and enjoy being raped?"

rky - "don't buy into the war propaganda that muslim women are treated so horribly we need to spend eternity there in war"

rky - The reason that you do not see websites like http://www.ovw.usdoj.gov/ or statistics like "According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, National Crime Victimization Survey, over 255,000 sexual assaults and rapes occurred or were attempted in 2006 in this country alone" in some of the "muslim" countries is that the women in those countries are barely recognized as people at all. This needs to change in the US, and everyone needs to get involved. However, comparing the treatment of women in the US to the treatment of women in the middle east is comparing apples and oranges.

It may be a stupid idea because we all know with some amount of reasonable certainty she is dead but I don't blame them. Love, loss, and grief can push you to do desperate things even if there is a snowball's chance in hell it will work. I think that it is great that they love her so much they'd try anything even if in their hearts they probably believe she is dead too but just don't want to give up until they have to.

I wish we could all be wrong and they'd find her alive. I just don't think they will.

Question - Does taking a 2 and 4 year old boy out on a camping trip with only 1 parent sound not normal to anyone else?

Was he alone on this camping trip or were there other people with him and his two kids? A family friend perhaps?

That's because he killed her and made up a crappy cover up story. She's dead, and the kids are the ones who are going to suffer now because thier father was an abusive arrogant a**hole, who killed thier mother.

It's just his stupid excuse for an alibi, it's funny though that some people seem to have fallen for it, as they don't even consider him a suspect, just a person of interest.

Frugal.. That was my first DUH moment. In Utah, in December, camping with a 4-year-old and 2-year-old. How priceless! Aside from "camping" in a Holiday Inn, who takes these little kids camping in anything less than decent weather? Sadly, I am thinking he killed his wife, and given the size of Utah, miles of undeveloped land, she will most likely never be found. Hiring an attorney is not a sign of guilt, nor is moving home with family. Refusing to talk/cooperate/interact with police and his wife's family screams guilty, and catch me if you can.. Sheesh...

You don't take two young children, on a midnight camping trip in the freezing temps and snow and then, only sleep in the van. What kind of camping trip is that. It wasn't. It was an attempt to establish an alibi. This man had something to do with her disappearance. There is no way he should need a lawyer and avoid contact with his in-laws. This man is just as guilty as Scott Peterson.

            The Shadow Knows

I definitely can see why, if innocent, he would be doing what he is doing. Of course it is possible all the negative thoughts are true. BUT, it is possible all he was doing, while possibly unusual, did not mean he was guilty of any crime with his wife.

Camping in freezing weather with my young children, in a van? While my wife was at home? Been there, done that, and my wife is still alive. Leave at midnight? Yep, did that too. Wife had to work the following day, I do gold prospecting, couldn't leave when I wanted to because of commitments, wanted to get out to where we were going that night.

Logical? Without all the facts, probably not. Even with them, maybe not. But for everyone out there already deciding he is guilty, we do not do everything rationally, all the time. If YOU do, you are a far more consistently predictable (and probably booring) person than I.

Is is possible he did something to his wife? Of course. But it is awfully presumptuous for folks to decide already based on a couple of short stories from some piece of the media. Awfully reminiscent of all the stories we hear these days where folks are being released after many years of prison from DNA evidence that shows "consensus" on guilt in a court (or with public opinion) doesn't mean it is true.

cmon - If that were the case, the investigators would have found that out by now and have evidence! With the way the media is today, they report everything! Don't you think that the investigators have taken evidence from the home, computer, etc. to trace e-mails...history...etc? Her phone..being able to track conversations, texts? You are really just grasping at straws here!

baby, right, they probably do have all that and still haven't charged him?? I think he probably did it too, but where's the evidence? he's no brain surgeon, if he did it, the evidence is out there.

until then, let's throw all suspects in jail like dingdong mayers says above.

Agreed, cmon - I believe he is just buying time, because he knows he's going to end up in prison and relishing every chance of freedom he has! I just feel sorry for the children. As for the mom being a porn/crack addict....I don't think that was her nature!!! Again, if so, there would be evidence to that effect! And we would have already heard about that. Perhaps I'm naive in that, but if officials ever saw any indication of that, wouldn't they publicize it like everything else?

Mayers - As much as I would like to see this guy jailed because I THINK he is guilty, it would be a bad idea for the police to do so right now. In some states, Police can only hold you for 24 hours before they must either charge and arrest you, or release you. Before they arrest you, they better have sufficient evidence, or they will most likely lose before it even goes to trial. A good example of how NOT to proceed with making an arrest is the Duke La Crosse Scandal.

Look up the name "Nifong" if you ever want to learn how not to prosecute someone.

Let's see, hubby takes 2 little boys out at MIDNIGHT for a 'camping' trip and then RETURNS home in the morning. That occurred on the night the woman "disappeared". Hubby gets his car impounded then rakes up 100's of miles on the rental immediately after getting the car. Gee bud, are you hiding/dumping something???

Tried to clean the carpet, put two fans on it to dry never imagining the police would "break" in to see if the family was ok. Then he buys new bedding? What a joke. Very few instantces does a mother just walk away from her children. This is very sad. Why would the husband move away knowing his wife is missing from their home. Wouldn't one want to be where she went missing and assist in the search to return her to the family?

Sad part is two little guys have no mother right now and did not get to share Christmas with her.

I agree pam12340. Couldn't have said it better myself. I know if my husband went missing I would do everything in my power to assist authorities in locating him. How tragic for those two little boys.

What a coward of a man, if he did do this. Why not just admit the marriage isn't working and get out, so that all involved could move on with their lives and find happiness within someone else. Perhaps it's just pride in admitting that you faultered in some way that is so difficult for the male ego to admit.

His pre contrived alibi stinks / seems very suspect. But If police had blood evidence, he would be arrested. he is smart to hire a lawyer, even if he did not do it-they will try to pin it on him.

I've said before, if the public doesn't locate the body, the case will never be solved. It has been a month now and the police are giving up on the investigation. If the police put the husband in jail untill he talks, then he would have two options. Tell everything and get a lighter sentence or stay in jail for ever.

All well and good, except that if he didn't do anything, we have a person who spends the rest of his life in jail, and can't provide for his kids, because he has nothing to talk about.

"if he didn't do anything" talking to the investigaters will provide proof of his innocense and find the culprit. He isn't providing for his kids by his questionable actions.

We all know he did it. Innocent men don't hire prominent attorneys, hide out in Wa. State and refuse to help or talk to the in-laws. It's usually the husband, just ask Scott Peterson and the man in Utah who killed his wife and dumped her body in a landfill when she found out they weren't going to North Carolina for what I believe was a job offer and that he'd been lying all that time, they ALWAYS get caught. The only ones who get away with it are celebrities, just ask O.J. and Robert Blake. I can't believe his family is actually standing by him. He has the lamest alibi too, "I took my two boys camping for one night and we slept in the car". Swiss cheese doesn't have that many holes in it. He needs to man up and stop putting off the inevitable, which is him getting caught. He wasn't even smart enough to go to Canada (which will not extradicte if we decide to seek the death penalty) when he is eventually charged. I'm sure Wa. will have no problem extradicting him back to Utah.

This case is so obvious. He did it. He killed her, packed her body up, put it in the back of the van, then packed the kids up and high-tailed it northward far away from Utah to dispose of the body and make one of the lamest attemtps at alibi-making ever concocted.

When his boys get older even they will, when examining his "alibi", know for a certainty their father murdered their mother.

The huge media blitz *might* have done some good a month ago when she was freshly dead and a few clues may have been viable. Now, barring the husband's confession, there is nothing to do except wait for the vultures in spring.

Now....if law enforcement considers him a 'person of interest' - (suspect)........
                            This guy is.......Pleading the 5th......
Midnight below zero & a snowing camping trip with toddlers...
Not wanting to cooperate in finding his wife......
Hired an attorney to protect him from what???
All he has said & done & hasn't said & done....reflects as guilty.

And then law enforcement allowed him to leave the state?.........They just gave him a longer leash.....hopefully he tangles himself with it and the truth will finally come out and justice be done.

The guy murdered his wife. Everyone knows it. When we get snow melt in the spring her body will turn up.

The unfortunate thing is that when the snow melts, the animals will come out to prey upon her corpse. That's what he's hoping for. He's just buying time. Sorry, I know that may sound crude, but it's a reality.

Susan's friends & supporters are in a fantasy world if they think Susan will be found alive. Trying to find Susan is a complete waste of time. Do you want to know where Susan is? It's very simple. Ask Josh. He knows exactly where Susan is. Efforts to find Susan are nice and sweet, but totally useless.

She's dead. Is it really that hard for the cops to piece together what happened, and then come up with some evidence? Or even a body? Maybe they ought to fire everybody in that lazy no-good donut eating department and hire a new team? When are people going to finally stand-up to sloppy police work, and get rid of department slackers who are just "punching-in and punching-out" but not doing any work?

The fact that you honestly believe that boggles the mind.

yes, everything I type on some thread are my deepest thoughts. get a grip. there's a lot of assumptions being made about the guy, who might have killed her, but you all assume it. glad we have courts.

yeah, you're right, the husbands never do it do they. Just ask Scott Peterson, he'll tell you that he is innocent.

and even if they aren't your deepest thoughts they are certainly sound like your lamest thoughts.

And how shocked were we when Mark Hacking admitted to killing his wife and putting her body in a dumpster in Utah(which was found 3 mos later in a landfill) and then went out and bought a new mattress the next day. To think, the husband did it and ACTUALLY admitted it.

Talk about needing to get a grip.
