Some unhappy with bikini ad for Perky Cups coffee

A banner is shown outside a suburban Denver coffee shop called Perky Cups on March 1, 2010 in Aurora, Colo. Officials say a bikini and the First Amendment provide enough coverage for the advertisment after Aurora City Council member Molly Market called the picture on the banner "degrading to women," but also saying it's legal. AURORA — Officials said a bikini and the First Amendment provide enough coverage for a model advertising a suburban Denver coffee shop called Perky Cups. Aurora City Council member Molly Markert called the picture on the 10-by-20-foot banner "degrading to women," but she says it's legal. Markert said she had city employees measure the banner, and it conforms with city size restrictions.

Robert Rogers, a city attorney, said the content is protected by the First Amendment.

Perky Cups owner Jason Bernal said people have come into the shop to complain, but one stayed to buy a burrito and coffee.

He said the sign has been great for business but he's not sure how long he'll leave it because of the complaints.

He said he wants to be a good neighbor.

Ya know...there was about 10x more breasts showing at that televised news conference yesterday about that former madam that was going to run for office on the....prostitution and pot squared platform. The girl in the photo looks descent to me - she is pretty, covered and just has cleavage no big deal.

I don't see how this photo is any more revealing that what you might see in an ad for 24 Hour Fitness.

Much ado about nothing.

Plus she's getting great....er...."exposure"....for future work! She'll get famous!

rkymtnwoman, Funny you should mention that! I told my husband the same thing when we were watching a program about Hooter's. I'm sure that no men would be offended if a woman opened a "family" restaurant called "Bulges"! Or, "The Big Package" with men walking around in speedo type shorts. Of course, they must be the appropriate size to work there (like Hooter's girls). Right?

Let me know when you open "Woody's". I'll be there!

You are exactly correct. The only thing I wish they would change...is TV commercials where they ALWAYS show a woman licking and sucking on her fingers or silverware or whatever dish the food was on as if it were a phallic symbol...that is pretty gross to me....but doubt I would have a problem if they showed a half nekkid good looking man do it.

In response to the outrage, if I was the cafe owner, I would have made a different advertisement...but in this one, I could have the woman holding the cup of joe IN her clevage. Now, THAT is classy!

How is this ad degrading to women? With all the underwear and swim suit models out there that do it for a living think otherwise.

Maybe they just don't want a huge picture of it in their face? That's the only reason that I can think of why they wouldn't want that particular ad.

The only thing I can think of as degrading is the suggestion of servitude. But that isn't their issue.

So true. To state that it is degrading to women by making them merely a sex object to be ooggled at, one cannot escape implying that men only think with what is in their pants.

I would wager it is the wording added to the image that is making people complain. Had it been something of say bathing suits perhaps I get the sense the complaints might have been fewer.

As well as eyeball the bikini clad women they were there to complain about.

Said City Council Member Molly Market, "Look at me, I'm a dumpy old frump named after a Holly Hobbie doll. What did you expect me to do? Bust out my EZ Bake oven and cook for joy? Hey, are you going to eat the rest of that burrito?"
