WASHINGTON — A gunman coolly drew a weapon from his pocket and opened fire at the teeming subway entrance to the Pentagon complex Thursday evening, wounding two police officers before being shot and critically wounded, officials said.

The two officers suffered grazing wounds and were being treated in a hospital, said Richard Keevill, chief of Pentagon police. Authorities had no motive for the shooting, although terror.

The suspect, believed to be a U.S. citizen, walked up to a security checkpoint at the Pentagon in an apparent attempt to get inside the massively fortified Defense Department headquarters, at about 6:40 p.m. "He just reached in his pocket, pulled out a gun and started shooting" at point-blank range, Keevill said. "He walked up very cool. He had no real emotion on his face." The Pentagon officers returned fire with semiautomatic weapons.

Of the suspect, the chief said, "His injury is pretty critical."

The assault at the very threshold of the Pentagon — the U.S. capital's ground zero on Sept. 11, 2001 — came four months after a deadly attack on the Army's Fort Hood, Texas, post allegedly by a U.S. Army psychiatrist with radical Islamic leanings. In the immediate aftermath Thursday, investigators did not think terrorism was involved but were not ruling that out and did not discuss possible motives.

President Barack Obama was "closely following the case" and getting updates from the FBI through his homeland security and counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan," White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said.

Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as John Patrick Bedell, 36. They also said they were speaking with a second man, who might have accompanied the shooter, and were running his name through databases.

The subway station is immediately adjacent to the Pentagon building, a five-sided northern Virginia colossus across the Potomac River from Washington. Since a redesign following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the Pentagon, riders can no longer disembark directly into the building. Riders take a long escalator ride to the surface from the underground station, then pass through a security check outside the doors of the building, where further security awaits.

After the attack, all Pentagon entrances were secured, then all were reopened except one from the subway, said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman. He said the subway entrance was likely to remain closed overnight at least.

Keevill said the gunman gave no clue to the officers at the checkpoint about what he was going to do.

"There was no distress," he said. "When he reached into his pocket, they assumed he was going to get a pass and he came up with a gun."

"He wasn't pretending to be anyone. He was wearing a coat and walked up and just started shooting."

Keevill added: "We have layers of security and it worked. He never got inside the building to hurt anyone."

A Pentagon official working late in the building said people inside first heard of the shooting on television. They were later told the building was locked down and to stay in place.

Then at around 7:30 p.m., they heard an announcement on the public address system that they could leave through Corridor 3 — one widely used to get access to one of the parking lots.

"We really don't know anything, just that we can leave now through that corridor," one official said on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak about the incident.

And here we got people on the Vine on other seeds saying extra security measures are not needed. More proof they are wrong.

He could have shot people right on the sidewalk outside. How much security are we supposed to have to keep us safe from the odd gunman? Really? Should we all be patted down upon leaving our homes? Upon entering a grocery store? Randomly as we walk down the street?

I'll take my chances with the rare, random gunman, thanks. Because the only thing that can come out of MORE security is LESS rights. Starting with taking away the second amendment ones, and continuing on to the others.

bonos,

Should we all be patted down upon leaving our homes?

We are not talking about homes. We are talking about a government facility that holds many of the nations secrets, the nations highest ranking military leaders, and a building where the President and/or staff goes all the time.

More security at complexes such as these, only makes sense.

At it stands, nobody has a right to enter the Joint Chiefs or any of the Secretaries of the DOD offices other then those allowed by law.

Proof please. Any quotes? Any examples? Or should we treat your comment like the silly, gratuitous strawman swipe that it sounds like?

The post you link to does not say that extra security measures are not needed. Like I said, your post was a silly gratuitous strawman swipe.

Look at the treasury director. He doesn't like paying taxes either. If you remember he had to pay back taxes to be confirmed. Also wasn't there one or two others in the Obama administration tht didn't pay taxes. Oh let us not forget Rangel. I didn't know that they were actually republicans!!!

    SR,

I had a problem with my tax money being used in an amoral pre-emptive strike that did not turn up weapons of mass destruction, and was proven to be targeted at people in the wrong effing country, and which resulted in helping to bankrupt USA while lining the pockets of Haliburton.

We all pay for taxes for things that we are not exactly fond of. However, liberals are labeled "unpatriotic" when we complain about it.

Examples? You mean like...Idunno...THE ENTIRE IRAQI WAR!!!

Are you honestly going to sit there and rewrite history and say that conservatives NEVER called liberals "unpatriotic" for vocally objecting to Mr. Bush's and Mr. Cheney's stance on pre-emptive attacks and the Iraqi War?

Because he is not in the sack with Saudi Royalty.

Also didn't bow to Saudi Royalty either which isn't even protocol in their own country. Thing is.. Obama is in just as much as Bush was and will kiss there ass for oil. That won't change no matter who is in power.

Yes, we can't forget that the worst terrorist attack in American history happened when Bush and Cheney were in the White House. 3000+ deaths - World Trade Center leveled - Pentagon burning - 4 jets hijacked at American airports - air traffic stopped for days (how many?) - following recession - first responders health conditions -
If only they, our leaders, could have stopped
them................? If only 9-11 had never happened.............?

Bush and Cheney were in charge that's all I'm saying. Just a fact. Did you get the part about 4 Jumbo Jets hijacked at American (not Timbuktu) airports.
google or bing - aircraft hijacking wiki -

1968 to 1976 there were 414 hijackings world wide. Remember PanAm and Lockerbie and many in the US. Our leaders were not prepared. Bin Laden had warned us more than once. If they had considered this as a war this might have been prevented - it was war. They considered the cost to Airlines as compared to safety. Just think NO 9/11. . . . . ...... The conservatives hawks failed to protect us or our economy. FACT I mean I'm just saying...

Sounds more like suicide by cop to me. It certainly didn't seem to be a serious attempt to get into the Pentagon, as much as it's sounds like a nut who wanted to have cops kill him and go out in a blaze of inter-national news reported supposed glory.

He could have killed a whole bunch of people if he wanted to, no matter what time of the day it is, the Metro is crowd. Unless you make everyone go through a scanner, there is almost no way to secure the metro stations in and around DC. To many people carrying bags.

He only shot police, not anyone else. So it is hard to believe that he was out to hurt anyone but the metro police and/or himself. And you really need to stop jumping to conclusions before the facts are known
