FDA warns against drinking raw milk

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration has said it more than once, and they'll say it again: Don't drink raw milk.

The FDA says there are 12 confirmed cases of illness in Michigan after consumers drank raw milk from Forest Grove Dairy in Middlebury, Ind. According to the agency, raw milk may contain a wide variety of harmful bacteria — including salmonella, E. Coli and listeria — that can sicken and even kill people.

Raw milk has gained popularity with some who say pasteurization destroys nutrients. The FDA says that's not true, and there is no "meaningful nutritional difference" between pasteurized and raw milk.

The agency says there were a total of 1,614 reported illnesses, 187 hospitalizations and two deaths from consumption of raw milk between 1998 and 2008.

More people die in a day from FDA approved drugs than in 10 years from supposedly drinking raw milk. The FDA needs to get it's priorities straight and get its own house in order.

If anyone has blood on it's hands its the FDA not raw milk farmers.

Too right!

I grew up on a dairy farm. I grew up drinking milk after it came out of the cow, was strained thru a strainer filter to remove any impurities and then put in a HUGE refrigerated vat. We sold most of it to milk producing companies but we sure as heck didn't buy it from the store when it was right there. We filled up a pitcher or two and that was that. I grew up having absolutely great teeth, great bones, all that jazz when other kids' teeth were filled with cavities because they weren't hard enough.

While the FDA certainly provides a valuable service in many ways but they are out of their minds about this one. As long as raw milk is properly handled right from the git go...it's very safe.

The FDA should be more concerned about the poultry, pork and beef in supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, school lunch programs, military KP units, hospitals, soup kitchens for the homeless and government cafeterias instead of occasional sickness caused by spoiled milk. Sounds like they have too much time on their hands.
