TUPELO — Green Day, former 'N Sync member Lance Bass and celebrity chef Cat Cora are among those helping to pay for a gay-friendly prom in Mississippi next month.

Organizers say the event is open to everyone but geared toward gay students.

The American Humanist Association also will contribute $20,000 for the May 8 event in Tupelo.

The annual prom is organized by the Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition. This year's event has drawn attention because of the case of Constance McMillen, a high school senior who challenged her school district's rule banning same-sex dates at proms.

Coalition spokesman Matthew Sheffield says plans for the event haven't been completed. He says Bass, who is gay, is among the celebrities expected to attend.

What small minded, mean spirited people. And this is in the bible belt? Love your neighbor as yourself? Do unto others as you would have done unto you? The students would not have been able to organize a party at a country club all on their own, they would have needed the assistance of other adults.

Bigotry is very ugly.

Sorry these people have their rights to decide what they want to do and I can assure you the kids would have not wanted this girl at their prom whether she was lesbian or not (poor, white girl in a predominately black school).

If the kids in Massachusetts (a "liberal" state) didn't show you what kids can do to other kids, then you must have been homeschooled or a bully yourself.

Kids are getting meaner and meaner whether it is in a conservative or liberal state. Irregardless of the adults influence.

I suppose you're right. They do have a right to be small minded and mean spirited. Maybe they would like a visit from the Westboro Baptist Church? I'm sure they'd love to come and show their support to this school.

Instead of their narrowmindedness, they could have been more like this school.

High School fights a hate group--with song

Instead they chose to align themselves with intolerance and hate, in a very high school sort of way. Planning a secret prom so they could purposely exclude someone. Talk about petty.
