Wrong. Barry Bonds did not live as a near vagabond, in the recesses of society. Quite the contrary; Barry Bonds lived in excess and near fame during his reign as a major league player, and still lives in excess today. Babe Ruth is Babe Ruth because of the impact he had when he was alive, not post mortem. Babe Ruth was a legend in his time, and, fortunately for some of us, is recognized as a legend today. He is the greatest for a reason. Unfortunately for Barry Bonds, however, his name is being tarnished, now, when some argue that he could still be playing. Just after his retirement, the generation of fans who watched his whole career and subsequent drama cannot help but be swayed in some way in relation to their respect of Bonds. His image will not "ripen" with age, nor will the stigma of an asterisk be erased. He is not Van Gogh, undescovered in his time. Barry Bonds was known about, and rich, all the damn time.
