PARKERSBURG — Democratic Rep. Alan Mollohan has delivered for his West Virginia district for nearly three decades — steering millions of dollars in projects that have helped an anemic economy.

But such earmarking by a powerful member of the House Appropriations Committee has drawn scrutiny and stirred the anti-Washington fervor coursing through this year's elections. Suddenly, Mollohan is facing his toughest challenge, his first contested primary since 1998.

His rival in Tuesday's primary is state Sen. Mike Oliverio, who has criticized the agenda of President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. In a state where Republican presidential nominee John McCain won handily in 2008, that criticism has helped the 46-year-old financial adviser attract the support of some of West Virginia's tea party supporters as well as former Mollohan allies.

"I think the voters in northern West Virginia have simply lost confidence in Congressman Mollohan," Oliverio said.

Mollohan, 66, chairman of a House Appropriations subcommittee, was first elected to Congress in 1982, winning a seat that had been held by his father.

He's campaigned on his ability to deliver federal funds to the 20-county district that borders Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania and includes West Virginia University in Morgantown. He has steered an estimated $480 million there from 1995 to 2006, according to the nonprofit Citizens Against Government Waste.

These earmarks, particularly those that benefited nonprofit organizations, prompted an investigation that also examined the rapid growth of Mollohan's personal wealth. The Justice Department closed the case in January and filed no charges against Mollohan.

Oliverio continues to criticize Mollohan over past ethics allegations, even though the veteran lawmaker has not been charged with wrongdoing by either the House ethics committee or prosecutors.

Well, duh! Bennett in Utah booted out by the GOP and this Dem career politician may also face the same fate! Get a clue, you schmucks, people are fed up with YOUR perks, your salaries, your pensions, and your wasting of OUR hard earned money while expecting the taxpayers to foot the bill. The "lords" are hopefully feeling the pinch by the serfs who have had enough. Good riddance!

LOL, Michelle...no I am not necessarily a Rep. I have voted for many Dems before. I am a conservative first...if there's a Dem who is a conservative, I would have no hesitation voting for them...correction, I don't know if I could EVER do that again after this travesty we have seen played out in Washington over the last year by the Dems in power...

Lawrence - Sounds like a biased news article from an AP reporter.

That is what is amazing.

By steering money, does that mean accepting bribes for his vote? Seriously, call up Bob Bennett and you two can cry me a river. Politicians need term limits, and if they won't pass that themselves we'll take care of it.

    Hey...

In order to get term limits, you would have to talk Congress into them. Does anybody see a problem with that idea?

What possible motivation might Congress have to pass term limits? Because you might vote them out if they didn't?

I refer you to post #7.

[Note: in compliance with CoH1, the pronouns "you" and "I" in the following posting are used in the editorial sense to refer to a theoretical audience that is not an individual, no matter how well it might seem to fit]

    Ahem...

    Talk talk talk...

Nobody gets voted out...everybody gets reelected. I've seen the way you people vote. You get anti incumbent fevor all right, the Democrats want to get all antiincumbent fevor on the Republicans... and the Republicans want to get all anti incumbent on the Democrats.

The highly charged partisan attitude you see here on Newsvine...along with carefully gerrymandered districts assures Congress, as always, that congress gets reelected.

You folks didn't invent "anti incumbent fevor", Congress did. And they did it so that they all get reelected. You aren't riled up against incumbents because you're independent... you're riled up because partisans know how to push your buttons. You're lemmings.

The GOP is scheduled to pick up some seats this November... but it's hardly a victory. It's just the way we do things.

Have you seen the dumb joke where the card says "How do you keep a moron busy (see other side)"?Then you flip the card over and it says the same thing? Well, that's you and I.

We vote in Democrats who screw up, so we vote in Republicans who screw up so we vote in Democrats who screw up.

The bottom line is that Congress is full of incompetent and corrupt clowns who can't write legislation without glaring loopholes... they can't balance a budget, they can't set public policy. The ONLY reason ANYONE would vote for these bozos is that they've been told that "the other side" is destroying America.

See, that means that you'll vote for any clown YOUR party puts up, because if you don't, the "other side" (of the moron card) will get into power. All elections become a choice between the lesser of two evils.

Congress has a 95% reelection rate. Which is fine. This is a Democracy and Congress has no term limits. We are free to vote the career criminals back into power every time.

Congress also has a 20% approval rating. So it's not like we don't understand what Congress is... it's just that they can manipulate us very well.... and we are busy flipping that moron card over and over and over.

I do sincerely wish there was a meaningful "anti incumbent fevor"... but like I said... I've seen you people vote. Congress is safe from you.

    And they know it.

Now... folks say "well what can we do?" because I guess the remedy isn't as apparent as I think it might be. Relax, there is nothing you can do. You absolutely must vote the way you vote in order to save America.

The result being that Boener, Pelosi, Brennan, Lieberman and Reid have no fear of losing their jobs. None at all.

Congratulations. You have a Congress full of opportunists who look good in TV.

When was the last time ANY problem was solved? Everything just keeps getting worse. Sure... maybe some things are inevitable ...but EVERYTHING is unsolvable in principle?

Ok... I'm done... now traditionally, when I get on this soapbox pointing out how absurd partisanship is, folks respond with... "yeah you're right... those Democrats are trying to destroy America". Seriously... people post that stuff.

So let's get to that part now. (rolls eyes at theoretical audience is is not any individual, no matter how well they have been described)
