JERUSALEM — British singer-songwriter Elvis Costello is canceling two summer concerts in Israel because of its treatment of the Palestinians, disappointing fans in a country enjoying an upswing in visits by renowned artists.

In an announcement on his Web site explaining his decision, Costello spoke of "intimidation, humiliation or much worse" inflicted by Israel on the Palestinians and said sometimes "merely having your name added to a concert schedule may be interpreted as a political act."

Costello told The Jerusalem Post earlier this month he was against boycotts, saying it would be like avoiding the U.S. or England because he disagreed with the policies of their governments.

But in Thursday's edition of the paper, he explained his change of heart.

"The issues just became too complex and I woke up one day and realized I couldn't go on with the shows," Costello was quoted as saying.

Costello's cancellation drew an angry response from his Israeli fans. "There is an enormous group of people in Israel who are humanists and hunger for peace, who yearn for a normal life and are prepared to make painful concessions. And they are also sworn culture-lovers," one disappointed ticket-holder, Shai Lahav, wrote in the Maariv daily, noting that he had listened to Costello every day since he was 15. "With this miserable decision of yours, it is this group of people you have weakened."

"Sometimes, a musician ought to focus just on music. At least that is a field in which he has some knowledge," Lahav wrote.

Israeli Culture Minister Limor Livnat said a singer who boycotts Israeli fans "is not worthy of performing in front of them."

Many artists choosing to perform in Israel generate protest from Palestinians and their supporters who say their shows amount to support of Israel's policies in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. But few actually cancel.

After years of concerns over political tensions and violence, more world artists are performing in Israel, including Madonna, Leonard Cohen and Paul McCartney since 2008. Elton John is set to take the stage in June.

It's Elvis Costello. Translation - when's the last time this has been was in the news?

If he hadn't changed his first name to Elvis, no one would have the faintest idea who Declan Patrick MacManus was.

(Given how cumbersome his original name is, changing it to Elvis Costello wasn't a bad idea).

BJK - exactly. I guess it was the only way for him to attract some attention.

Translation: We are ready to whine and embarrass ourselves and our national pride cause some has been wont come play here.

Never mind that they think their painful concessions means all other Jews homes except theirs are returned to the Arab aggressors since where all Jews live is considered Arab or Muslim or whatever they call it this year.

I would take Madonna any day over Costello.

P.S. Is there any relationship with Lou Costello.

Just another way to put his name in the papers, and thereby promote his stinking music.

This article isn't worth voting up.

Way to go Elvis Costello. His conscience kicked in and made him realize he could no longer perform in a country that is a serial Human Rights abuser. I applaud Costello's decision.

ROFLMAO. Israel a serial human rights abuser but Hamas terrorist group controlled Palestine now that's a real stand up place for human rights.

lovecook74: You obviously didn't read the seeded article before your knee jerk reaction to my comment. Costello could no longer perform in Israel because of its inhumane treatment towards the Palestinians 42 years and counting. You are also trying to distract from the topic of this seed, but that's what one gets from an IDF Zombie.

Okay, what's IDF?
Since both sides of the conflict are culpable at this point, a musician boycotting essentially helps to fan the flames. Maybe Costello should be more detailed in his ideology regarding Israelis/Palestinians. What does he think should actually happen there? and why did he sign up to play in the first place? It's not like the conflict just suddenly made the news recently.

IDF = Israeli Defense Forces

As for Mr. Costello's "action", who cares other than his fans? Not me.

Or maybe he's too cheap to pay for a plane ticket :P

Something tells me most Palestinians have never even heard of Elvis Costello.

Lucky them.

Israel has been criticized in the media all over the world for years, especially since the Gaza incident. Is Elvis Costello so dense he just found out? As I said above, all this is no more than a publicity stunt by him to ingratiate himself with those who believe all that the media has to say in order to sell his CDs, and put his name in the papers. It is only a game to get publicity, and has to have been right from the beginning. He probably doesn't give a @!$%# about the Palestinians, but has done this for his own benefit. Or else maybe he didn't sell enough tickets to make his trip worth while so he will get out of it whatever he can. This is truly the "tempest in a teapot", and not worth commenting on any further. Let him go perform in Saudi Arabia. He can go to hell.

Elvis Costello = has been. Or wait. Never was.

good riddens. Go perform in Dubai. Just don't do anything deemed indecent.

You can't be serious. You are reporting me then threaten me in the same sentence. Hilarious. Elvis Costello's conscience wouldn't allow him to perform in Israel anymore because of the brutal, repressive treatment of the Palestinians especially the Gaza Massacre of 2008. Who cares Gina? A lot more people than you realize. Burying your head in the sand won't make this issue go away.

Everyone is entitled to their own interpretation of what another person does. Either Costello was aware of events long before he contracted to perform, and then grandstanded to make headlines and sell his cds, or else he's so stupidly impressionable who would want to see him anyway. I repeat my post number 7, notwithstanding Confessor's opinion.

But why did he schedule the dates in the first place? It isn't like the Israeli/ Palestinian thing just started this year. Has he not been paying attention or something?

kavlaq. I used to represent a lot of musicians and people in the entertainment business some years ago, and I have a pretty good idea of what they do for their own benefit, and the size of their egos. Take a look at my post number 7 above for an explanation of his little game.

He probably did not sell enough tickets to make it profitable to perform in Israel, so he decided to make a "grand exit" and instead of simply canceling his performance, attached some politics to it.

And it worked - look we are discussing him here, some people probably hear his name for the first time. Some maybe would be interested in what he is doing.

Way to boost his popularity.

My point exactly, but the Israel bashers will use it in their diatribe anyway, which makes me think of Jack Nicholson's line in The Bucket List: "Never pass up a toilet."
