WASHINGTON — House Democrats have easily defeated a Republican attempt to roll back a major provision of the nation's new health care law requiring most people to get health insurance.

Republicans tried to amend a small business tax bill with a provision that would have eliminated the mandate. Republican Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan called the requirement "one of the most onerous provisions of the new health care law."

Democratic Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan said eliminating the mandate would add millions to the rolls of people who lack health insurance.

The vote Tuesday to repeal the mandate failed 187 to 230.

So why not cover the unemployed with Medicare now? Most of them don't have a job or health insurance. If the government can mandate that everyone purchase insurance, they should lead the way by insuring those who cannot afford to insure themselves. Why wait? They need health care now. How many will die because we waited? This reform bill is killing people by denying them coverage today. Don't they deserve medical care after all they've been through?

It's about getting those people who would rather pay in cash for thier healthcare. It has nothing to do with covering people who want to be covered. Adding more taxpayers and making their tax burdeon a little less.

    It's selfish, really.

More people pay taxes so everyone pays less overall. Yeah, terribly selfish.

Yeah, putting guns at people's heads so you don't have to pay as much? I'd call that pretty selfish.

3 guys are eating lunch in a park. A stranger comes up and asks for money for lunch. 2 of the guys say ok and pull out 5 bucks apiece and ask the 3rd guy to pitch in as well. He says no, the first two guys beat him up and take 5 dollars out of his wallet, then hand the 15 dollars to the stranger.

That's how we roll in the US.
