Ozzy: Booze, not politics, prevented Israeli gigs

JERUSALEM — Ozzy Osbourne said that alcohol, not politics, has stopped him from playing in Israel until now.

Osbourne is in Israel this week as part of this year's international Ozzfest tour, along with Soulfly and Korn. Tuesday's performance will be his first ever in the Holy Land.

Asked why he hadn't played in Israel before, the heavy metal rocker, known for decades of decadence and substance abuse, told reporters in Tel Aviv on Sunday: "I guess I was drunk for so many years."

He said politics had nothing to do with it. "I try to stay away from politics. They don't understand me and I don't understand them," he said, sitting next to his wife Sharon.

On Monday, Osbourne and his wife toured Jerusalem, including the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum, Israel's Tourism Ministry said in a statement.

Pro-Palestinian activists in Europe and the U.S. have urged artists to boycott Israel to protest the country's policies toward the Palestinians.

A number of performers, Elvis Costello and the Pixies, recently canceled shows here, angering local fans. Other artists, including Metallica, Elton John and Rihanna, have resisted boycott calls and played in Israel this year.

Osbourne, 61, pioneered heavy metal as front man for the band Black Sabbath.

Songs like "Paranoid," and "War Pigs," with their dark lyrics and heavy guitar riffs changed rock and roll and inspired many bands. Osbourne left the band in the late 1970s and has been performing solo since.

Ozzy looked healthier than did Bill Ward when I saw Black Sabbath.

Bill Ward is too unreliable to be on tour with the band. I consider Tony Iommi to be Black Sabbath, though. Not Ozzy. Ozzy just had the amp.

Motley Crue toured with Ozzy back in the mid-80's and both bands were into drugs & booze big time. I'm glad Ozzy is sober now. I wish Vince Neil would get a clue that DUI's 25 years after his horrible accident (which killed a passenger & severely injured 2 other people) don't endear him to the fans. Continuing to drink when you know you're an alcoholic is inexcusable. Perhaps Ozzy should have a talk w/Vince.

Ozzy talking to Mr. Neil would do little good if he is as enmeshed in his disease as most believe him to be. He needs to get clean for himself as his top priority, not his wife or kids or the wishes of a contemporary.

Demmy, you are right. It was an off-handed comment, but yes, Neil needs to get sober for himself. I'm sure Nikki Sixx has talked to him many times about it as well. Sixx has been clean/sober for quite a few years now & speaks often about AA and sobriety. He is a far different man now than in the interviews from the 80's and early 90's. Having once dated an alcoholic, there is much pain and anguish for the alcoholic as well as those who are around them during their addiction.

I definitely hear you on the last sentence. Most of a substance abuser's loved ones don't realize they often will need as much help as the addict himself/herself.

I saw this program on VH1 about 4 years ago showing Vince getting it back together in order to reform M-C. Exercise, diet, new haircut- but alcohol? No, that wasn't part of the program. In one scene he's so smashed at a casino table that he falls off the stool twice. Ugh.

I was in Al-Anon for 2 years before I started to feel like a normal person again. The program does work for people who work it. Vince Neil and I are the same age & I've been a Crue fan for quite a while now. It is sad to see that the other Crue members are all clean/sober with the exception of Vince. As a non-drinker, it's still hard for me to fully understand addiction. But at some point, you'd think the light bulb would go off in their heads. It's sad when it doesn't.

Addiction is a very difficult and complex disorder that may involve any and all of the following factors that vary from person to person which makes treatment let alone finding a cure extremely difficult: genetics, hormones, biology, bio-chemical feedback loops, and environmental factors. Gaining sobriety for someone who suffers from addictive disorders and chemical dependency is extremely difficult. Staying sober for life is even more difficult which is why relapse rates are so high.

    Not really.

Just as long as they don't sing about how clean they are, they're just fine. :D

Whether they chose to boycott playing in Israel or not- just remember that the artists who do play there aren't neccessarily in agreement on Israel's activities vis a vis the Palestinians. I think it has to do far more with the incredible fee they get paid to play as little as one show there.

Saw him on his "Bark at the Moon" tour back in the day. Ozzy is a legend of heavy metal and rock music. Too bad at 61 years old, he's just now coming around on his alcohol abuse...

Ozzy should offer to do a free show in Gaza. Of course, Hamas would never allow it. The Palestinians worst enemy isn't Israel; it's themselves.

Ozzy could also make some Lebanese "hottie" dance,

or Arab Brit or American Arab young lady dance.

NO ULTRA young ladies, Jewish or Muslim, though.

NOT if the ULTRA Men were watching.

However, Muslim and Jewish women, that are NOT subject to their husbands, but are EQUALS,

would "bob" and "tap", and SMILE, with men around.

Maybe, Karma will kick in one day, and the Muslim and Jewish ULTRA Men,

                  will be EQUAL to Women.

I don't think that these ULTRA's, these "brave" men, Muslim or Jewish, could handle that.
