— The U.N. says peacekeepers have killed eight militiamen who attacked a U.N. base in volatile eastern Congo.
A statement said Monday the militia attacked a base near Virunga National Park over the weekend. The statement says the some 100 attackers were members of the shadowy Mai Mai militia.
A Congolese army official said the army killed two more attackers.
A U.N. military spokesman said no peacekeepers were wounded or killed.
In August, rebels attacked another peacekeeper base, killing three peacekeepers and wounding seven.
Repeated rebel attacks in Congo — including in areas long considered relatively peaceful — have called into question the ability of the U.N. force to protect civilians.
