COLOMBO — Police say inmates resisting a search for prohibited items at a prison in Sri Lanka's capital have wounded 46 police and five prison officials.
Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody says the officers were hunting for narcotics and other illegal items early Sunday at Welikada prison in Colombo. He says prisoners obstructed the search and attacked the officers, hurling stones.
Jayakody says the unrest has been brought under control, and no inmates were hurt.
The director of Colombo's main hospital, Dr. Hector Weerasinghe, says most of the injured officers suffered head wounds. Some were injured in the chest and abdomen.
Sri Lankan authorities routinely conduct searches in prisons, hunting for drugs and other prohibited items such as cell phones.
